Revell 1/142 Northsea Fishing Trawler

A pretty old kit as I mentioned in the video, not anything else to say really...
My rates:
Kit: 6/10 (I decided to be lenient, since it is a kit over twenty years old. However, I couldn't forget but other companies, such as Tamiya, produced small gems twenty years ago, so I judged this Revell kit, with the old Tamiya ones asTops for this era. There were problems both in fitting the parts, as well as the detail as you can see in the video)
Instructions: 7/10 (The typical Revell isntructions, which would have got a higher score if the painting guide was less misleading)

Stellar build....resurrecting an old kit to today's standards....The additions(ladder rungs, funnel bars, stowage, etc.) add much needed fidelity of detail. The weathering is a "Tour de Force"....the filters, sponge technique, rust streaks, etc. all coalesce to make a terrific looking ship. Congratulations!!! Bill.

I just picked up this kit and found your video, all I can say is WOW. You made this kit look soo good, hope I can make mine look half as good. Will make a diorama with mine, lots of waves and stuff. Great inspiration from your build. Cheers 👍

I can remember building this kit when I was about 15 or so... I'm 60 now, and amazed that it's still around !

On hindsight, I would like to have done some upgrades and maybe create some of my own parts (perhaps railings). But for it's age I really enjoyed it and was actually quite surprised by the quality if the molds

SetoFreakingKaiba Yes, there's a lot of scope for superdetailing; if I ever tried this kit again I'd try drilling out the bridge windows, putting in some interior detail and hope that my paintwork turned out like yours. Cheers.☺

There is no need to hope, the paintwork is the easiest to do on a dark surface, literally the simplest of filtering. But I have tried the same method on light coloured ships but it doesn't work well because they turn out too dirty looking. So I have developed more advanced techniques for ships, that I will share with you in a video I have planned :)

The model shown looks like the Ross Kandahar..she was never a North Sea trawler,being built as a middle water ship,later in life rebuilt and lengthened to become deep water ship,as can be seen by the number of hatches to the fish room on deck.I am a retired marine fitter and engineer who worked on these ships.

I see, thanks for the info! Back when I built this I didn't much care for historical accuracy, today I would definitely have researched this much more. Though in my defense, the kit was definitely called North Sea trawler, from Revell.

at 3:04 the safety raft container is made of plastic and should thus not be "rusty" coloured. My 2 cents. Good paint job on the ship's metal (hull , deckhouse)

ODDBALL SOK You are right! I am mostly accustomed to WWII warships, one which almost all parts were made of metal and could therefore rust :)

+Dragon Pony Thank you! Can't say I have ever seen the model you are referring to, I guess some research on photos that show the sprues would answer your question :)

The sprues seem to match. This kit was reboxed on several occasions as a Soviet spy trawler back in the day. :)

It is exactly the same. The Spyship was a rebox in cold war times.

Yes I built this kit as a Soviet spy ship back in 1981. Motorised it. Trialled it on flat part of a river. The last I saw of it was as the feeble power couldn't stop it going over a weir. I waded out in the freezing water in my Y fronts but all i could find were transfers floating past...And the lifeboat, fittingly. Lesson learned...secure foam in hull in future boat builds 😏
