I have the Airfix Vosper M.T.B and German E-Boat, very old kits from the '70s. This PT-109 would go well with them, I think. Beautiful build, Alex, you really let the character of the boat shine through. Love the shell casings too, what a great detail to add!

Please note that non of these boats ever had "metal decks" From BUREAU OF SHIPS NAVY DEPARTMENT: Decking shall be single layer of mahogany plywood, approximately 9/16 inch thick, installed in general accordance with plan, BuShips No. PT486-S1106-411193, subject to development of satisfactory material. Covering board and plank sheer shall be of mahogany. Beams shall be of mahogany, sawn type, molded 6 inches and sided 1 1/8 inches throughout except at hatchways, etc., where beams are 1 3/8 inches. Short beams reduced molding except in way of torpedo tubes. Intermediate bent-beams shall be of mahogany 7/8 by 3 inches in crew's quarters, and elsewhere as required. Intercostal bridging in three courses under forward deck with mahogany stretcher below the beams; the wing courses shall pick up the deck coaming with ample lap-by, resuming at after end of engine hatch and continuing to transom.

Overall a very impressive build. I would suggest starting with a considerably darker green and then weathering it as you did. The paint that the Navy was able to use in those days in the Solomon Islands tended to chalk out very quickly due to the Tropic Sun and then when the rains came it washed the chalk paint down over the whole side so it would have been streaky and streaky with much lighter paint than the original dark green. One other nip to pick and that is this, the stippled appearance of the paint on everything on the deck is not prototypical period in a larger scale boat you could certainly do brush marks because the guys painted the boats with a brush however the stippling is not prototypical. I found it interesting that you added extra styrene Chine logs or Chine rails. Very interesting. Skool!

Alex, I don't know if you'll see this but, I just want to share with you, that I have built this model twice, once when I was very young, and once a few years ago. I like you am very disappointed that there are no colored pictures of the 109 anywhere. I can't believe that no one seems to have a picture of this boat. I painted my first model in the green color that I have read was the common color of these boats in the South Pacific. I also painted my last model in the haze gray color, which I assume was the color when they were built at the Elco plant. There's alot of controversy about what the actual color scheme was. I definitely enjoyed watching this video. I like the way you present your videos, they are very enjoyable to watch. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your content. Thank you for sharing your hobby with us.

You did a very nice job on the 109.... Very impressed with your workman ship. only issue I have ever had with most models built of the 109, is that everyone paints them Green. which PT"s that worked rivers, and narrow channels were either Green, or a camo green. how ever the boats that worked harbors, and wide channels were not Green. Like the Movie PT 109, they were painted Dark Sea Grey to blend in with Sea color of these areas..... in the book PT 109 it states when Kennedy first saw the 109. she was a dark grey boat. the other things allot of modeler's do. And I blame the modeling companies for placing it on their decal sheets. is add the big PT-109 decal at the bow. Pt's Never had PT- number painted on their bows. you only saw this on Mchale's navy on tv. the boats had a small set of numbers of the boat painted across the top of the cabin front, port/starboard on either side of boats open bridge. and on the base of the 20 caliber base mount at the stern. the gun added to the plank's at the bow. was a 35 mm anti tank gun.

Unfortunately for me, I don't have all the paints that are afforded to you, but I have enough to get by, fortunately for me, I have mansy reference books on PT boats, and a PT Boat museum with 2 live PT boats inside, the PT Boat school that Kennedy was trained was down the river from where I live but is now gone. I'm 54yrs old and I've built the original Revell kit several times, so I'm not particularly bothered about the details being correct on this new kit just happy to see the PT109 updated, I have two photoetch kits from white ensign for the old kit and I know of a company that makes the camouflage mask for the other kit offered by Revell the PT 596. I've built the 109 in 1/35 th scale and in both scales it is a green called field green, forest green is more a dark green. The 1/35th scale 109 came with color instruction booklet.

Nice job you've made there, Alex. This has been a great tutorial to watch just before I lay down the money to buy the same kit. I've had a liking for the old Elco and Higgins Boats tear arsing around the Pacific crewed by guys not long out of school. Often personal preference for a type of gun by the boats skipper and exec lead to some customising by the young captain depending on what he could take while his boat was being repaired after an exchange of lead between the Japanese and American boats and aircraft running protecting cover. No doubt an exciting, yet deadly game for a bunch of fearless youngsters. So if your build is not being representative of a PT right after launching, then some custom work like non-issue guns would also be authentic. Little craft like these were a part of the Make Do Navy that operated in my back yard up there in the Pacific, the big wide blue Pacific. Now to likely again be turning into a battle ground, where once again was the USN & INJ, now it's still the USN, but the foe this time is the Navy of China. Same shit different day. The US Navy also deployed PT's in the Mediterranean during WW2, mostly on night patrol duking it out with German Schnellboots. Now, many years latter there remains in Florida a surplus PT painted apparently some god awful colour taking people out on party cruises. I have a friend living there near Tampa who hand built for me a PT Boat from scratch using a solid piece of wood for the hull. The built was in 1/87 model Railroad scale to use in a diorama, but I've placed the boat in a display case instead. Anyway, thanks, Alex for the excellent build that's been great to watch. I've subscribed and look forward to your next build.

I’m surprised you didn’t pull up paint when you removed the masking tape. In my experience, mission models paints are very fragile and unless I apply a heavy clear coat before masking, the paint will lift every time. Like you,I love the paints, but they do not stand up to masking or handling without a seal coat.
@Neontrifle
@Neontrifle 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve had exactly the same experience, I found it impossible to mask camouflage without pulling off the paint, that’s despite the usual detacking the tape and leaving paint to dry 48 hours. MMP cost me hours of frustration on a couple of builds and I won’t go near them again.
@AlexModeling

@boblangenberg7859
@boblangenberg7859 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul, I’ve been using MMP for a little over a year now and have gotten much better with them, but they are extremely fragile. I take pretty good care in prepping for paint, that said, MMP is the only paint of any type in which I apply primer to a clean surface, overpaint with the color coat, mask some portion thereof, and have the paint and primer both lift to expose plastic. So far the only defense I’ve found is to clear coat immediately after each color application. I will pay more attention to applying heavier wet coats and see if that is more survivable. Otherwise, I love the stuff.

Wikipedia says (for whatever that's worth) that the "PT" Boats used in the movie were not PT boats but a newer USAF crash rescue boats made to look like the ELCO boats since none of the remaining ELCO boats left were in operable condition. So it is uncertain regarding how much we can depend on the movie for accurate information. It is Hollywood after all.

Hi Alex. I am writing this comment late but I am a late comer to your work. The cannon on the rear deck was a 20 mm orliccon and the added cannon on front was a 30 mm anti tank gun. Finally, these boats would have a heavy salt grime which would lighten the colour . The longer the boat was used the more salt grime would be. I enjoy your work and have learned a lot from you. Farewell from Canada. Keep modelling from me Alexander Vaalie Lupsor.

Agreed - the aft gun was a 20mm Oerlikon - standard on the early 80 ft Elmo’s, and later changed to a 40mm. The bow gun was an “extra” 37mm anti-tank gun found “abandoned” on one of the islands (Tinian, I believe), and resurrected by Kennedy and his Exec, Lester Thom. Later Elmo’s had a 20mm Oerlikon mounted closer to the deckhouse, and many had also adopted the 37mm anti-tank cannon as well, as it proved absolutely ideal for making a mess of Japanese barges and other coastal craft.

Fantastic build and video Alex! Your paint was awesome. This was well worth the wait. It make sense that different boats were painted in different shades. In WW2 in the South Pacific, paint and almost everything else was difficult to procure. And think about the environment of that area of the world. Brutal heat, rain and saltwater played havoc on those boats. I think the painting and weathering very realistic. I can see the ton of work that went into the build, and it shows. I want to thank you Alex for bringing all of us such amazing videos, I really look forward to them, that really lift my spirits and I thank you for that. Again excellent work on the kit. Wow, they really retooled that kit! The last one I built had a one-piece hull. The old one had a lot of errors on it, though. The John Wayne movie used British TBs cosmetically remodeled, not Elcos. The gun on the foredeck was a 37mm. Great job on the boat, Alex! Just a few points, not intended as criticism, as you're a much better modeler than I'll ever be. Just from the point of view of someone that has spent a great deal of time on boats. Lines (ropes) are never left coiled on the deck. Mooring lines would be tossed ashore when leaving the permanent base, extras stowed in lockers on the boat. Coiled lines like that are either going to slide off the deck while underway, and are a great way for a sailor to end up overboard from the trip hazard. The national colors are flown only while underway at the stern. If flown at all while at dock, a naval ensign (only the blue field with white stars) would be flown on a removable jackstaff at the bow. Also, you did some weathering on the deck that you called "oil spots." It wasn't overdone, and nearly disappeared in the final paint effects, but there would be no reason for there to be any oil spots on the deck of a PT boat, especially at the bow. Sailors are fanatical about cleaning up oil on the deck, because it's even more slippery when mixed with water than by itself, and there's nothing to oil on the foredeck of a PT boat. The only place there would be any "oil" on the deck of a PT would be at the fueling ports, and it would be cleaned up almost immediately after fueling. Just some fuel for thought. Keep up the great work.

@@AlexModeling The blue flag with white stars is the commissioning pennant flown from the bow in port. I know this for sure because I was on subs in the Navy the American flag was supposed to be at the stern in port and when underway on surface The American flag was flown from our conning tower. I would imagine the same would have been for PT boats oh I was a 0000 (four baller) rating or more commonly known as a Torpedoman. as for rust and dirt on the boats might be from patrol time but when in base even forward crews have to go through inspections, rust and dirt would not have been tolerated or spent casings laying loose on the deck which are a tripping of falling hazard you would end up on your butt or over board. As for John Wayne using Old British Pt boats that was because the government or some dumbass admiral did not want to have to transport them back from the Pacific theatre to the USA so they gathered all the PT boats at one sport and used flamethrowers on them and burned to the water line. Another fine waste of taxpayer money by morons. Oh go to Pinterest and type in PT 109 and there is a very good photo of the boat it shows a mast behind the helm that under way they would fly a smaller American flag along with signal flags that Revell forgot to include on the model. just saying.

"They Were Expendable" starring Robert Montgomery and John Wayne and directed by John Ford was filmed at a MTB TRAING BASE IN Florida. Representing MTBRON3 were 2 80' Elcos and 4 79 ' Huckins made boats. Any close scenes used the Elcos. The Huckins boats were used for training almost exclusively. They are easily picked out of the group shots as there .50 caliber mounts were mounted side by side as opposed to the Elcos mounted in echelon. You are probably thinking of Cliff Robertson in 1962s PT-109.

Never knew it had a field gun mounted on the bow. I done this model many, many years ago and it did not have the gun Love the Oerlikan on the stern!!

37 mm antitank gun that they "liberated" from who knows where, and rigged up an improvised mount for it using wooden timbers. Obviously added it to give the boat some extra punch, other crews were doing the same thing with whatever they could scrounge up, but in this case, the boat was destroyed just a few days after mounting that forward gun. Later in the South Pacific campaign, boats were fitted with a lot more guns, including 40 mm Bofors, in order to help in destroying heavily armed and armored Japanese supply barges.

I built the original Revell 1/72 PT-109 when I was a kid and I've built two more with Photoetch from White Ensign Models, still not happy, now I'm going to build the new up-dated kit with the interior and 37mm deck gun. I'm happy that I have plenty of reference on this boat, I have a squadron walk around book and a Squadron PT boats in action, a Revell PT models book and a hard covered PT book on the building of 80' Elcos. I have frequently visited Battleship Cove in the neighboring state of Massachusets with their own 80-Ft Elco and their own Higgins boat. And to top it off, I live in the state that JFK did his PT training and I've been by the Melville marina. Needless to say I've gotten a lot of reference material. I don't mean to Bragg, because, I'm pretty sure I will not build a better kit as you. I don't know where you live but if ever get to visit, you should stop in the city of Fall River, Massachusetts, they have two full-size PT boats the USS Massachusetts and inside the battleship on the lower decks a PT Boat room with many personal photos and gear of these sailors. They also have a Baloa submarine, a Fletcher class Destroyer, the USS Joseph Kennedy, named after the presidents older brother and finally a "Russian missile boat". In the next City of New Bedford if you are interested is New Bedford Whaling museum.

Your model looks fantasric! The only mistake is the port side depth charge wasn’t on the boat on the day the boat was cut in two by the Japanese destroyer. The depth charge on the port side was broken off of the deck by a runaway torpedo and never replaced. As for the gun that they attached on the bow, it was 37mm. Please understand that I’m not criticizing your model, as I said, it turned out terrific, just pointing out that one mistake. The colors, weathering, all that are spot on. Those boats took a beating that’s for sure. I always enjoy your videos and thank you for posting it on here.
