I remember being 7 yrs old and seeing this trailer in the theater. I couldn’t wait for the summer of ‘83 to happen! Still one of the funnest summers I ever had!

The title was changed because the Jedi creedo states that vengeance is the quick and easy path to the dark side. A Jedi never takes revenge. The story is about the return of the Jedi Order with Luke seeking to draw Vader back from the dark side..

It's awesome to see Luke's lightsaber in blue. It was still the ROTJ hilt that he builds, but the effects guys and Lucas decided to make it green because it didn't show up as well against the blue sky backdrop in some scenes and I think they wanted it to stand out more. That was REAL reason they made it green. Even in the original posters, the artists depict Luke with a blue lightsaber, especially the one with two hands, the hilt and the blue blade swinging upward. All those promotional materials had to be made beforehand, so it was too late to change them to green. Would have been cool to see their lightsaber battles with the blue blade, but the green is pretty iconic and definitely popped more on the sandy background of Tatooine.

at 0:55 the force ghost visual effects weren't done yet and Luke's saber was blue! Nowadays they'd never let that pass!

When I saw this, I thought Obi-Wan was coming back to life!

It's hilarious that even as an early pre-name-change trailer, it still had "It's a trap!" and the Wilhelm scream, as if it knew that some day the internet would be invented and these things would end up as memes. :)

These guys knew how to make trailers. Just list great characters, and say awesome things in an awesome voice. Now trailers just tell the whole story. I mean honestly, this guy just says "Darth Vader," and Vader gets a montage of everyone with dramatic looks. You know this dude's a bamf of a villain.

The narrator here sounds even more excited than in the previous two. Just look at that powerful delivery of "REVENGE OF THE JEDI!". And all those ALIEN WORLDS!

@01:08 - Luke's lightsaber blade was blue before it was changed to green. (because it was hard to see against the blue sky of Tatooine)

It was blue, but it was pretty hard to render against the blue sky of Tatooine and Endor. They originally did blue for Tatooine, which is hell already. When they get to Endor they realised they shouldn't waste much time so they switched to green, which is good imo.

I cannot tell you how exhilarating it was to see this as a 9 year old kid in 1983. We had to wait 3 years for the next instalment and suddenly we were given images of the next adventure. It was absolute bliss. To have the original trilogy a big part of my childhood was a gift from heaven ❤

Luke's lightsaber color changed because his first one was Anakin's lightsaber and the second one was the one he assembled himself. A blue lightsaber blade was traditionally associated with the Jedi Guardians, whose talents lay in martial skills. Anakin was an action Jedi, so to speak.Jedi Consulars often used green bladed lightsabers to symbolize their commitment to peace (Like Obi-Wan) that's why his second lightsaber is green.

It was smart for George Lucas to change the name to “Return” to save money on printing one less letter!

There was a Revenge of the Jedi movie, it was the working title up to about a few weeks prior to the films release. As for the lightsaber color it was changed because they felt the blue blended in too much with the Tattooine sky. The change also happened to serve as a sign Luke was his own man, not his father nor Ben. The whole Jedi Guardian thing wasn't conceptualized until the Expanded Universe long long after.

Gotta love how they still managed to get a Wilhelm Scream sound effect in.

I saw this trailer when I saw Star Wars for the first time after I saw The Empire Strikes Back when they put the new title "a new hope" in the beginning of the film. Ahhh, now THAT is a trailer. My friend Patrick was so jealous I saw the trailer before him

There was a lot of speculation that the release of the Star Wars original trilogy trailers on Star War's youtube channel indicated that it was building up to the unveiling of Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens, that was quickly proven not to be the case, now over a year later we're finally getting an official Teaser Trailer on Friday November 28th in select theatres. It'll quickly show up on iTunes.

I agree. "Revenge" was kept in the third "Star Wars" episode titled "Revenge of the Sith".

I like how Luke's lightsaber was originally supposed to be blue again, but it didn't stand out enough on the sandy background, so they went with green. I guess the green truly made it look more "new" all around, but it is cool to see the blue shots in this trailer. Still would have looked cool!

Those spotlights in the beginning should be light sabers when it´s Star Wars.

Interesting, the effects shot at 1.20 (the Falcon rolling as she navigates into the DS2) is longer here than in the actual movie, with the ship closing right into camera and filling the frame.

I know that this narrator did a lot of voice-over work for trailers, but hearing him kept making me think of Hardware Wars. He almost sounded like James Earl Jones at the very beginning.

This was WAYYY before they had any of the final effects work done so his blue lightsaber was most likely a place holder.

Great teaser ... you can also see parts of the deleted sandstorm sequence and outtakes like another view of Han Solo opening the gate .I hope we see something on the next wednesday.

The 'wilhelm' as it's called can be heard dating back to movies as long ago as 1951. The first movie was called Distant Drums and is named after the character who performed the scream, Private Wilhelm. I noticed it just the other day in an episode of Doctor Who. Classic and New I believe.

I saw one of these back then and I swear one had a shot of Luke shaking the bars on the door trying to get away from the Rancor (which is in the movie). But I have never been able to find that trailer.

I remember this at ComicCon ... now I feel really old ...

why was this movie cancelled I wonder ? Clearly it was already filmed or at least parts of it. I would like to know what else it would have added to the story. Please release it one day !!

This old title caused trouble for Star Trek, at the same time they were making "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn." They wanted to call it the Vengeance of Kahn and then it became apparent that Lucas was planning on using Revenge of the Jedi, their title seemed too similar and they changed it.

Anyone remember a short teaser trailer for 'Jedi' that played during the intermission of 1982's double-bill release of the first two films in cinemas? Haven't been able to find it on KZfaq.

yes they even made tons of merchandise with ,,revenge''. most was thrown away, but the remaining ones are extremely valuable.

I gotta believe next Wednesday they will be releasing a teaser for episode 7 or at least an announcement of the title or something like that. These past few Thursdays they have been releasing a teaser trailer for each of the original 3 movies and also next week will be Oct 30 which will be exactly 1 year since Disney bought star wars

Imagine if they had stuck with the original name. Would ep. 3 be Return of the Sith? Or would it still be Revenge of the Sith?

Obi-Wan and good Anakin's light saber color was blue and up to that point just considered the "Good Guy" color, as Red was the "Bad Guy" color of Darth Vader's. But Lucas decided he wanted to cut the lightsaber building scene in RotJ, but also wanted people to know it was a new lightsaber. So they took all the animation frames for the lightsaber that were blue and tinted them green.

Lets hope now, they revert that

All promo items relating to "Revenge" versus "Return" were pulled back from vendors after the name change but a decent number of them still remained in circulation at that time. Well stored, unused Promotional posters and MOVIE CARD POSTERS especially are selling for very high prices on EBAY. Future value is sure to increase as the fan base learns about their existence. May The Force Be With You!!!
