My first 45 was really five 45s all at the same time. I'll never forget them as long as I live. My mother was pretty much addicted to a thing in the UK we used to call 'Jumble Sales'. Kind of like a Bring and Buy sale I think. Anyway, people donated stuff they didn't want anymore and it was all jumbled up together in a Church Hall and sold off for charity or for repairing the Church roof or something. Rummaging through the stuff for little treasures floated my mother's boat in a big way. Anyway, when I was about six or seven years old she came back from a Jumble Sale with an old, blue Dansette record player. The lid was damaged but it played okay. Or at least it was presumed that it did because my parents didn't have any discs. They just listened to dance-band music on the radio. It was very pretty, was my Dansette. The bit in the middle revolved and everything. About a fortnight later, mother found a little stack of 45s at another Jumble Sale and my own addiction started. They were: 'I'm Telling You Now' by Freddie and the Dreamers, 'Help' by the Beatles, 'A World Without Love' by Peter and Gordon, 'Three Wheels on My Wagon' by the New Christie Minstrels (my favourite by far when I was seven) and 'How Do You Do What You Do To Me' by Gerry and the Pacemakers (which I didn't 'get' at all of course. I thought it was dumb). I played them all - a sides and b sides - until the grooves went flat and anytime I hear any of them it takes me back so fast it makes my eyes water. If you know what I mean.

In the early 1960’s, when I was around 3-1/2 or 4 years old, we were at our old duplex home on 12th St. in Superior WI and my dad, a huge Roger Miller fan, was playing “King of the Road” and I was absolutely FASCINATED by the spinning vinyl and the music-I could not resist the temptation to touch the arm of the record player to see what happened with the sound-and I cannot recall more than two times in my life where my father was really T’d off,, and that was one of them! I will never forget running to the bedroom I shared with my older brother, crying…But, luckily it did not stop me from a lifetime of performing music live, everywhere I have lived and traveled to.

Mystery is an ally and like an octopus a splash if ink and an escape serves them well. Some of us are a bit longer in the tooth and a first record was a ’78’ and it was a Roy Rogers recording and book with photographs. It might have been a first ‘Boxed Set’. Henri Cartier-Bresson learned all ever needed from the Leica manual that came with the camera. Equipment junkies are just that. 👍

Atlanta Rythm Section at a Toledo Port Days probably 1980. Visiting relatives and my folks let we wander - afternoon stage. Heard them playing “outside woman blues” that my Cream loving , surrogate older brother/neighbor played all the time.” Great memory. Recognized “champagne jam” from FM radio. After listening king at back album photos of Marshall’s and guitars being played, blew my mind to see in the person. Thanks for conjuring that up.

Love your videos, guests and content Otis. My first concert was amazing. I lived in Cleveland OH and WIXY 1260 AM radio station had this amazing concert line up, Bob Seger Kenny Rogers and the First Edition Tommy James and the Shondells Strawberry Alarm Clock & more! This would have been 1971 or 1972. Of course around 1973 and 74 it was the Agora to see Patti Smith and Shawn Philips. Cleveland really did rock. Haven’t lived there for many moons. I definitely learned a lot by living in a music town.

My first job (outside of the Family -where I worked hard but didn't get paid) was when I was 12. I was paid twentyfive cents an hour. First mucking out a donkey and cow shed that was nearly to my shoulder. Obviously, it had Never been cleaned before. But from there, I did every job that was offered. I was still getting paid a quarter an hour when I was babysitting at 13 years old. I spent most my money at the thrift store, buying books. But I did buy 45's by the time I was 15. They were 77 cents each. One of the first ones ,at least that comes to mind, was Mr. Tamborine Man. I still L💚VE that song. I also loved Roger Miller songs 🎼. But that was my Mother's album. 🎸

I won tickets, per my mama bugging the FLUCK outta me, to see Vern Gosdin and Mark Collie and the Dogs. Loved it and was so tickled to be there. Then myself and 3 friends from the pencil factory where we worked bought tickets to see Lynard Skynyrd and Bad Company....the best concert I ever saw. For me the only thing that could top it is Waylon coming back and me seeing him as he was during the 70s. Thanks for the answers Otis. Blessings y'all!!

I’m old as dirt so my first 45’s and my first live shows were in the 1950’s. Lucky for me my mom loved music and I got to see some legends in their prime. The amp I wish I still had was a little 10 watt Magnatone I had when I was in my teens. The guitars I regret losing are my J 45 I bought on layaway when I was 18 and a white 1961 Les Paul custom on the SG body that I was forced to sell to pay a tow truck bill after wrecking my car after a late night gig back in 1970.

Otis, this is very cool to hear you try answer questions from the subscribers. First Concert: A local band called "The Frogs" in a bar in upstate New York, I got in at age 16 because a school friend was helping out in the bar where the band was playing, Southern Rock, but they were good. How To write a song: My advice is what I learned from other song writers, pick the simpliest thing you can think of that nobody has ever done. And there's a lot of them, struggled for years, but since March of last year I've penned 18 songs, (no music, I'm leaving that to the pros) I look at myself like Bernie Taupin, Elton John's songwriter, he bangs them out and Elton puts the melody and tune to it. So keep at it and don't get frustrated. Otis is right lock yourself up, concentration is the key, and keep it simple, don't be afraid of doing what I call ("Hat, Cat, Rat) it works believe me and a great way to get started writing something that truly flows all the way through. Thanks Otis for your content, it's cool to take a romp through music history with someone who was there and covered all genre's of music, love the content, you are quite the good story teller.....😎

I think the first album I asked (begged) my folks to buy me was Gordon Lightfoot's "Summertime Dream", because we had heard "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" on the radio... turns out I loved the whole album. I don't remember my first 45... it was much easier to put albums on dad's turntable than to futz around with the 45 adapter. Thank you, Otis 🙏 Happy Saturday, and be good to you 💛🤍

First 45, Boston, "Don't Look Back." First arena concert, Rush, Signals tour. Here's a thing to ponder: Rush opened with "The Spirit of Radio." Naturally. But in the last verse Geddy sang, "One likes to believe in the spirit of BASEBALL." This was in Jacksonville, FL, and I swear it happened, and I've always wondered why. And I won't ever google this - I'd rather never know why.

Larry Brown went from failing high school English to becoming a great American novelist, i.e., high school is an indicator of nothing and there is hope beyond failure. Also "a picker" himself and a great fan of good songwriting and playing and musicians, some anyway, were fans of him. LoL, my neighborhood pals mom had gotten tickets & the older brother refused to go the morning of the actual concert because Vanilla Ice simply wasn't cool anymore. So, the mom called & extended an invite to myself free of charge and I went along. Next one was Phish a couple years later in 1995 at Great Woods MA. .... Two different sides of the musical spectrum ... That's for sure 😃.

First real concert was the band America at Hershey Arena....I think in 1975 or '76. Burton Cummings opened solo for them since he had left the Guess Who and had an album with a single on the radio. We thought Burton Cummings would be a snooze fest, but after about 3 songs from his solo album, the lights went down and we thought he was done. Suddenly the opening riff from American Woman , (Da Da Da Da Da Da Dum....Dum Dum.... Da Da Da Da Da Da Dum), and Burton Cummings screams out "AMERICAN WOMAN, stay away from meehee".....everyone went nuts and he proceeded to play every Guess Who hit and was called back for an encore. I felt sorry that America had to follow that, and they were a let down, but it was still a great experience.

BJ Thomas had a regional hit (in Texas) called “Garner State Park” (a famous Texas vacation spot for kids between Con Can and Leakey on the Frio River). Sam the Sham’s big hit at the moment was “Little Red Riding Hood”. I felt real lucky back in those days...

One of my first 45's was a red colored record that had Swing down Sweet Chariot on one side. Can't remember what was on the other side. My mom and dad had a 45 that was a. recording of Albert Schweitzer playing the organ. Dad had seen him do a concert at a church in Freudenstadt Germany in the early fifties. He might've got the record then. I remember listening to that as a kid on my grandparent's HiFi. There's a guy on Medium who shows pics of LP album covers. Looking at those reminds me of cleaning out my mom and dad's basement when they moved to the sunshine state. I'm ten years older than Otis, and I remember things like what he's saying in this video. It's funny how things didn't change that much in ten years back in the day. Now-a-days it seems change happens much quicker.

Concerts that you played in that were FABULOUS!! What do remember from your FIRST time singing in a choir or playing in a group? What do remember from your FIRST lesson(s) on ………at school or in a private lesson? I try not to think about concerts I played in where I messed up…. But I try to be thankful for the enjoyment and work that music has provided me and love playing my flutes and guitar. I have a trunkful of flutes of all sizes ~ LOL! I love listening to people talk about their lives. My father was the kind of guy who would answer a simple question about how something worked with a very long explanation of theory, development, etc. Most people found that boring, but he told me if you think you understand something, try explaining it to someone else. I don’t care if someone wants to talk about themselves, their life, anything. Love to hear it. Well, most times, lol.

I had, and still have, a ‘63 Blonde Bassman head and matching 2-12” cab. To this day, the reverb unit is the thing I get asked to sell the most. Of course, I won’t. I’m not desperate for the money, and I’d never be able to afford to replace it. Same goes for all my Fender gear. I haven’t bought anything for about 30 years, and don’t need to. Quick gear story related to your question regarding camera gear… Someone at a dinner party said to the host, “This dinner is fantastic! You must have an amazing oven.” That’s all for now. Tip your waiters. Thanks Otis!

My friend bought a 4 /12 marshal at ye' old music in Marisa I had a hundred watt plush amp with a 2/15 dual showman cabinet and a shop class made guitar and a Harmony one pickup Rocket .After learning a few chords and getting a Gibson guitar that ended the hideous howl but in the end I got the Marshal traded for a 68 spitfire. The thing had very little tolex on parts of it but the back had a very giant MONTROSE #3 an it sounded like heaven for my Kiel auditorium ears. Then I got a distortion + and my neighbors hated me less

Great advice!! Guitar Center makes it's sales number by selling the "right now" gear vs. the right gear. You end up buying everything two or three times.

First concert: Iron Butterfly. Seriously. It was at the Mississippi River Festival, July 10, 1969. It was a family outing because my brother was a fan. The only things I remember from that concert are the iconic opening organ riff of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, and then falling asleep at some point (I was 6) during that song that never ends.

That's funny, I was going to ask about your hat in the last video I watched of yours. My name is Brian too! I'm a hat collector and a hat maker so it got my attention right away. Looks great.

The guitar I wish I still had was my first one, a black & white Sears Silvertone solid-body electric I got in the summer of '65. Not because it was a great instrument but because my parents reluctantly bought it for me after I stayed on the B honor roll my entire freshman year in high school. That was the deal and I worked hard to keep my grades up. I'd probably still have it if I hadn't stupidly emulated my hero Pete Townsend and did what John Hiatt rightly condemned by "smashing a perfectly good guitar" to impress my peers a few years later. I now have two excellent guitars - a '72 Les Paul Custom and an '88 USA-made Strat - but I'd love to have that Silvertone back for sentimental reasons. Only a knuckle-headed kid would do what I did.

Good Morning Otis...That was an absolute blast! Thanks for all the chuckles...You only left one thing out on your observations prompted by the question how do I write a song...You're right when it comes to "writing" you just do it! I've been writing now for 54 years...for a couple of decades I was awful I'm finally getting pretty damn good at it if I say so myself...But guess what nobody gives a shit!!!!!!!! Especially those that know you best...LOL...If I were to ask you a question it would be something completely superficial...Like why the "whiskers"?...PLH-ELB

Hey Otis, great video as always. My first "concert" I remember as a young man was Loretta Lynn and The Stoneman Family at a forgotten Chataqua park in Franklin Ohio. I do still have 8mm movies with a very young Loretta signing autographs and kissing babies. I forever chased live music from that point on and made some of my own. Keep up the good work and much love back at ya'!

I know I am a year late, but a coincidence made me laugh. Before I was old enough to have money to buy a 45, there was an offer on the back of a cereal box to write in and get a free record (the flimsy thin plastic kind). I wrote in as myself and I was sent “purple people eater”. Disappointed that I got an obvious kid song, I wrote in as my dad in his mid thirties and was sent “king of the road”. Too funny. And yes, my dad was not happy with the forgery (the envelope came with the entry form taped to it), but he let me keep it. My first “adult” music.

Woody Guthrie said that he would take somebody else's song and put his lyrics to it, then change the melody and chords enough so that it wouldn't be recognizable. You could learn a lot about songwriting that way. Some classical composers have done worse. I just wouldn't do it with Humphrey the Camel. 😆

My first record was “Dreamin’” by Johnny Burnett. My first concert was the Chambers Brothers at Mater Christi High School in Astoria , NY. The opening band was the Hassles supposedly with Billy Joel on keys.

Maybe it takes a man of mystery to make a story more interesting by obviously knowing more than they choose to say? Thanks for answering our questions! I think it's great you learned the value of time vs cash early on, obviously not everybody does. 😊Thanks for Humphrey the Camel, that's different all right, I love it!! Going to ask my favorite dj to play it! (SJOCR are you reading this? 😉) Wish we could get your reverb back!!

when I was like 5 or 6 we started going to the summer oldies concerts at 3 rivers stadium where the Pirates and Steelers played. It was all of the old do wop and mo town groups for like $3 bucks. we'd all get in the back of the van with absolutely no seats and just ping pong around as we went to the city. I'm so glad now that I can say I saw all of those groups perform live and I guess that made an impression because I spent the whole rest of my life traveling around to see live music. it's funny my parents still don't understand why I do that when it's their fault in the first place.😂

Your remark about hard work is dead right. I am now retired, I worked as a deckhand on a towboat when I was a boy, the deckhand's job was the hardest and paid the least on the boat. I worked construction for years, laborers worked the hardest and got paid the least. Most of the hard jobs paid a lot less than the "skilled trades". I was an electrician, and we were one of the best paid trades.

I think my first concert was a 3XY ( Melbourne's former rock radio station ) under 18s concert a Melbourne's Festival hall, pretty sure it was the Divynals, Mondo rock, possibly the Sunnyboys ( who I did see a number of times later, and we're a really good live band, good records too) maybe someone else as well,I think this was maybe 1981, I think the next few were Madness, the Human league, and a cool concert at the Palais in Melbourne (St Kilda) New order, the Saints and John Cooper Clarke.
