Gestational Diabetes (GDM) is a leading cause of birth trauama to both moms and babies. GDM is responsible for many extra interventions and procedures both during and after the pregnancy. Both moms and babies can have life-long risks from the mom having GDM during pregnancy. The good news is, you can fix it!
Gestational diabetes is not caused by bad genes or bad luck, it is caused by a bad diet. You can eat in such a way that you nourish both yourself and your baby, and reverse gestational diabetes at the same time. This video will explain how you can do this.

The mother of our daughter had gestational diabetes when our daughter was born. The doc had to rush to give her glucose after birth. It was never followed up. I didn't know and at that time, I wouldn't have understood, I guess. I lost 40 kg, but my daughter is gaining. One of my motives was I just couldn't keep up with her when we were playing outside. Now this is reversed. Sad.. We live in Thailand. This country will suffer in the coming years. Obesity and diabetes are skyrocketing! Welcome 7-11.. So sad..

Dr. Berry Wouldn’t it make sense that all of these sweeteners ( xylitol, erythritol etc..) derived mostly from corn (for mass markets) cause inflammation- because of their origin?? Regardless of the low insulin effect? Would like to not poison family!! Many many thanks

You should add "having multiples" as one of the risk factors of developing gestational diabetes. I was keto up until getting pregnant, then my midwife warned me not to go "too keto," and to add some carbs back into my diet. Fast forward a few months, and I'm diagnosed with GD. My doctor explained that because I was having twins, I was at a much higher risk because I had two placentas pumping out twice the hormones to mess with my blood sugar. I went back on keto, and did just fine. Yes, I had to monitor my blood sugar four times a day, but it was much better than being put on insulin! A good friend of mine was also pregnant at the same time, and also had GD. Her doctor sent her to a nutritionist who told her to eat lots of whole grains. If I were to eat what she was told to eat, I would have had to be put on inulin!! My friend was smart enough to ignore the advice of her doctor/nutritionist, and went back on a keto diet. Neither of us had to be put on insulin, and both delivered healthy babies!!

Thank you for sharing! In my country Hungary, they put every expectant woman on 160-180 gramms of charbs + insulin. There exist no doctor that agrees with going lower than 150 grams. It's very sad, because you either do everything on your own if you wanna go low carb/keto or you just follow the usual procedure. They always check both doctor and midwife my urine for ketones, that is ridiculous, because it can not distinguish between nutritional ketosis and keto acidosis. Nobody has heard about Lily Nichol's research, and they say you endager your baby by going low carb and people look at you like you were an alcoholic pregnant women.

My wife is pregnant and this video will be very helpful! Last time she was pregnant, the dietician wanted her to eat 50 to 60g carbs at breakfast, 15-20g of carb for a snack, then another 50 to 60g of carbs for lunch, another 15-20g of carb for another snack, then finally dinner with 50 to 60g of carbs for dinner. How ridiculous is that? I'm a nurse and I see how that diabetic diet nonsense is obviously controlling diabetes.

Thank you so much for this information! I was diagnosed at 8 weeks and have been struggling to get my fasting numbers under control even though I’m following their diet but their diet consists of me eating 3 meals, 3 snacks, up to 165 grams of carbs a day, 15 of which I’m supposed to have right before bed. I knew this was wrong i just knew it and no wonder I’m struggling. Everything he said about all the complications was spot on. I was told Keto was dangerous during my last pregnancy and I listened. Ive battled diabetes while pregnant several times but this last one was terrible. I was on 400 units of insulin daily during my pregnancy. We were so sick. Labored early on my own for 4 days before she came. Had 2 super lows during the pregnancy from the massive insulin doses and ended up getting 50% dextrose pushed through to bring us out of it. Her glucose was >10 at birth, quickly declining vitals, blue spells, extended NICU stay. Pre-eclampsia, post partum trauma and bleeding leading to hysterectomy, jaudice in baby, and on and on. One of my daughters experienced a seizure at birth from the fast drop in glucose. She weighed 8.5 lbs 6 weeks early. So much more happened that we fought through. Diabetes is a beast.

Wow, wish I had seen this years ago. I had two still births before being diagnosed on my 3rd pregnancy with Gestational Diabetes. I lived in a small town at the time and did not catch it until I got pregnant the 3rd time then shipped me out to the leading womans hospital here in Vancouver, BC Grace Hospital. Yes I was monitored quite a bit and my son was taken 3 weeks early by c-section weighing in at a healthy 9 lbs 1 oz. This was in the early 90s mind you.

reneemw1 Glad you came out okay. Sorry about your first 2. 😢 My son was also 9lb 1oz (he's 17 now) and I did it without pain management. I didn't know I had it until I went to nursing school (15 years later). I was never checked even though I had enough fluid for twins and didn't even get my first ultrasound till 28weeks. My son also had shoulder dystocia (shoulders too wide to fit through the birth canal) and I hemorrhaged terribly once I was able to get him out (luckily I had an injury to my pubic bone and the cartilage was not attached allowing my pelvis to totally open in the front). We both nearly died and I didn't realize it until I figured out what happened that day once I learned the medical side of birth. I had him on a military base that was slowly closing down the hospital and it was basically a clinic at that point. There were no MDs there that day (only one worked there at that point) only a midwife who couldn't do the emergency c-section that I really needed. The MD was never called in, either. We were incredibly lucky.

At 21 birth to my first child. Had GEstDia. My son was 10 lbs, 2 oz. got stuck. Born with a fractured collarbone. Had to be cut to get him out, tools were used, uterus was stretched to the point that it wasn’t able to contract fast enough (the way the doctor explained it) so profuse bleeding. Lots of blood loss. Doctor gave me a shot and painfully messaged my uterus to get it to contract to slow blood. I had asked for another ultrasound but since it wasn’t covered by insurance I didn’t get one. I had asked to have a c-section because “I felt” like the baby was big. Doctor said no because since it was my first baby I was just scared. I had to have reconstructive surgery “down there” to get things right again. If any woman is thinking Dr. Berry is incorrect, you should deeply consider the outcome possibilities of not listening.

I have never come across anyone who understands what I went through. I am glad to have read your story! I was on pitocin for 2 days after the birth to try to get my uterus to contract. That uterus "massage" is likely the most painful thing I experienced. My son was 9lb 1oz and had shoulder dystocia, too. They were about to break his collar bone but I was able to get him out. I had an injury to my pubic bone and the cartilage is not attached on both sides so my pelvis was able to separate in the front for him to pass. I didn't realize what happened until I went to nursing school (15 years later) and learned the other side of what happened that day. My son and I were so lucky to have made it and you and yours, too! Basically everything that could have gone wrong that ends up in the death of the baby or mom happened to us. Thanks again for sharing.

I suffered GD with my son. I was pretty healthy before I got pregnant, but was told that I was "prone" to Diabetes because both my parents and brother was diagnosed with T2D. Of course I was given ALL the wrong advice, ie, eat healthy carbs etc etc.... and I got to a point when I could hardly eat anything (in the prescribed diet) without my bloodsugar spiking! My pregnancy was difficult, and my son was born via emergency c-section, and developed jaundice soon after birth. I also had several infections after the birth and (of course) gained an enormous amount of weight. If only I had known then what I know today! My son and I are happy and healthy because we follow LCHF lifestyle. This should be the NORM, NOT the exception! The SAD is absolute nonsense!

This advice is gold. I tried this diet for a few days with GD after being told that I will have to start medication for fasting levels between 95 to 110 mg. I thought I was following this diet checking what I’m eating, still high morning levels. Until I decided to write down what I eat and the fat/carbs contents. I realised I was eating 80-90 grams of fat and actually over 120 g carbs. I’ve changed that, it takes a few days to get used to it, but now my levels in the morning are in range I am so happy and I’m not even hungry

Im a 21 year old male & My mother had Gestational diabetes when she was pregnant with me. I was born 9 pounds 13 ounces & suffered a fractured skull and shoulders due to being a big baby. During early childhood I was diagnosed with pre diabetes & battled obesity although in recent years it was reversed using keto (A1c currently is 5.1; about 80 pounds lost). Any tips for the offspring?

I was on a low carb diet for about a year. Now during pregnancy I was diagnosed a gestational diabetes because of a bit high fasting sugar. Now I'm forced to increase carb intake and eat them 5-6 times a day with every meal (fruits and veggies are not counted as carbs for them). What's going on in this world?

Thank you Dr Berry.. I'm Very glad to have found this information. A good friend of mine is pregnant, has Diabetes mellitus. After being hospitalised, and administered IV Fluclox for continual infectious boils, she was released, on Metformin and another drug. These made her very ill, so she turned to liver detoxing strategies such as Dandelion root capsules and Aged garlic capsules. .The Dr's however did not advise her on diet, she enjoys bread and cereal daily, finding it hard to quit these food, subsequently finding a new boil. As her friend I am concerned for her well-being but cannot force her to eat differently. I will try encourage her to get a glucometer as her Dr doesn't SEEM to be helping her . Thankyou 🙏🏼 for your helpful, sage advice.

because of history of PCOS and miscarriages, my OB immediately treated my pregnancy as a diabetic pregnancy, so from the beginning all through my pregnancy I was monitored, I altered my diet which I still adhere to, even though my tests all came back fine they were close enough to being gestational diabetes that they conducted my care to be safe. it made all the difference in the world, the scariest part was babies low blood sugar which corrected quickly with giving him a bottle. I was told by the nutritionist to do 45 carbs per meal and then 2 snacks at 15 carbs, they also wanted to start me on insulin and absolutely refused to take that, I did not use it prior to pregnancy nor would I subject my child to that.

Have you noticed that doctors have not admitted they were wrong but they have stopped telling people who have "stomach viruses" to eat the B.R.A.T diet? Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. NOTHING but carbs and sugar. No protein. The pediatricians stopped this first but I remember many times being given the same advice. But THIS? I never knew this was a "thing". Human cloning needs to happen so that thousands of Dr. Berrys can show up.

Drs keep you healthy enough to live and sick enough to still need them. If they made us healthy, they wouldn't be needed. It's a business model, in my opinion. That is why we must all take control of our own health. I gained 8 lbs in the 20th week of my pregnancy. My Dr told me to reduce my salt intake. Through research I learned that it could be GD, so I did the glucose test on myself at home. My sugar was 280!!! My Dr missed it. I began keto immediately, (along with 100mg of B6) and 1 week later, a repeated glucose test had a result of 144. I'm not out of the woods, as far as testing goes, but my sugar after meals is perfect, so I don't have to worry about harming my baby now. I have also lost 4 of the lbs I gained in week 20, though weeks 20 -24 are often your highest gain weeks. What could have happened had I listened to my dr??? I don't even want to think about it!
@Rakealia

I had both those tests you recommended at the beginning of 2nd trimester, my A1C was 4.9, which is pretty darn good from my understanding. I choose to do blood pokes instead of the drink test and by my previous practice's numbers I was golden, by this new one... they use stricter ones and wanted to immediately throw me on insulin and crap. :/ Not even let me try a diet change or anything, though I think the numbers they want are rather insanely low compared to most practices. It just feels like an excuse to push meds and interventions while increasing my stress. And I'm not getting many carbs period at the moment, most of what I eat is protein and fats... even 75g of carbs seems huge to me and I rarely eat that much. But this entire pregnancy I've struggled to eat much at all and am down 10 lbs from where I started on weight at 34 weeks.

A1c was innacurate for me. It always said low levels until I got told at er that I was diabetic. Also it is a known fact that gestational diabetes is not the fault of our diet. It’s got to do with our placenta. All we can do is help it until birth by lowering carbs. Of course this isn’t the same for those that had preexisting diabetes. I caught my own gd at 23 weeks by taking my sugar levels at home, two hours after eating and i also had some terrible symptoms and yet my dr didn’t believe me. They sent me at 24 weeks to do my oral glucose test and sure enough I was diagnosed without having to do a three hour test.

Really wish I had seen this 37 weeks ago... I've been told twice by my midwife that I do not have gestational diabetes after reviewing my glucose logs, but this one jerk of a doctor is so bent on getting me to have a c-section because this is a big baby. I think they're choosing to ignore the fact that my husband is 6'3 and was a good 10lbs 3oz when he was born, and his younger brother was 11lbs 8oz. My blood pressure has been pristine this entire pregnancy, my weight gain has been under control (granted I was already obese when I got pregnant), and my glucose logs have been pretty good. My A1c around 12 weeks was like 4.8% and at 34 weeks it was 5.1%. My amniotic fluid looks good, and there are zero concerns other than the baby is big. I just wish I knew for sure whether the baby was big due to GD or genetics. Based on the babies on my husband's side of the family and the fact that my mom had two 8.5lbs babies and a 9lbs baby, and that my glucose is pretty consistent, I'm leaning towards genetics.

If it's so serious, why aren't we educated at all by obgyn? Especially when I informed my care facility that I have family history of diabetes. I am 35 and I have a very healthy lifestyle before and during pregnancy. I eat mostly whole natural foods. I walk 3-5 miles per day and I lift heavy weights 3-5 times per week. Yet at 29 weeks I'm still diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I am absolutely frustrated with the situation. I felt like they should have checked me way earlier.

@@sarah29880 I get ya. My educator insisted on me eating 30g carbs each meal. And 3 snacks. Macro of at least 180g carb per day. But every time I had small amount of carb my glucose goes up to 150-170. I tried 2 weeks. This week I disregarded their recommendation and I started doing low carb. No processed carbs (even keto bread spikes me). And guess what my glucose now ranges 100-120 after meals. Sometimes the best way is to be really informed and educated for yourself. You never know if what they tell you to do is doing you harm or good. Just start testing yourself one hr after meal and track your glucose level. It should be under 140. You can get all the supplies from Amazon or pharmacy. You don't want to wait too long. It takes time to observe how your body responds to different foods. It doesn't hurt to start before you get seen. 🤗

@@maybeido03 oh thank you so much! Yes I was just stewing about how much I am fed up with the diet advice. I saw one video were a girl with GD was told to eat lean proteins and only “healthy fats” which by that they mean seed oils. And she was starving her whole pregnancy and her glucose went up with only three strawberries. It’s like HELLO you might want to recommend high animal FAT to stabilize your sugar, what the heck people!! That’s amazing you went with your gut and it’s honestly the only way for you to stay health and safe. The dietitians will continue to push higher carb levels than you are comfortable with and you got better results doing what you thought would work. You just made it safer for you and baby. Today I tested for the first time after my husband and I figured out how to work the glucose monitor and pin prick. I was panicking about having too high of sugar and not knowing (it’s been 6 days since I was diagnosed and I think it’s ridiculous they told me to wait, heck no) . It ended up fine thankfully! It was 118 after 1 hour eating…I had plenty of chicken skins, bone broth, tallow, eggs, fish, avocado, a couple of prunes, small amount of oats (I know not the best but has helped me) and a small glass of milk. All those things I think worked well and I hoping my continued testing is OK. Thank you for the advice. That’s good to know about the 140 being what you want to stay under. It did relieve some stress. Sorry for the long text. I am seriously ranting because I am so fed up with the diet advice they give to people. Glad I’m not the only one trying to do what actually works lol.

Dr. Berry, I have been subscribed to you for a while. I appreciate everything you upload. My concern regarding gestational diabetes is that some of us pregnant women simply cannot eat anything else but high carb, especially those of use that suffer with Hyperemisis Gravidarum (HG)....Food is such a struggle and many of us have to be hospitalized because we can't keep much or anything in. It's truly nightmarish in most cases. I can tell you that I want to eat healthy etc. but food is always an issue in HG. So as much as I understand the importance of a healthy diet etc.(This is what I promote on my personal youtube- health and fitness) it's almost like being between a rock and a hard place when it comes to food and HG...because a pregnant woman will eat anything just to survive, really. Thoughts? Maybe you can extend this video or topic to address the ones suffering with HG.

CGM is super expensive and not necessary for most people, I think for some type 1 diabetics it may be helpful but still not cost effective! Just get a home glucose meter and check before meal and 1 or 2 hours after some meals to see how you react to different foods. Totally agree with eating real food LCHF.

Nooooo, I can and could not use the regular glucometer. I tried but no. So, I found out about and got a prescription for the Freestyle Libre device that has a sensor and a reader and it goes on my arm like Dr. Berry suggested. But it also has an app, so I really didn't need the reader just the sensor. With insurance I get 3 sensors for $89. One sensor last for 14 days, so this should carry me through my pregnancy. Plus, I have a FSA account. If you can swing it try it. Also, keep in mind the Lancets for the glucometer cost me $50 plus the $15 for the glucometer, so thats not cheap either.

I just got diagnosed with GD. My doctor just called me a few hours ago letting me know 🥺 I’ve been looking at different videos trying to gain more information and I came across this one, thank God. I’m 26 weeks pregnant and I can’t help but feel so terrible about this news 😢 I didn’t have it in my first pregnancy. My daughter is now 6, and now I’m pregnant with my second baby girl. I wasn’t pre-diabetic before this pregnancy either. I’m scared and bummed out. My doctor said this is very common and he really didn’t seem worried at all…. but after learning about all the risks, I’m pretty freaked out 🥺 I don’t want to be put on medications & I’m going to do everything I can to make sure that doesn’t happen! Would that glucose monitor you mentioned earlier be a good idea to get, even though I was already diagnosed? They want me to eat three meals a day with snacks in between. I feel like it’s a bit too much to be eating. Also, grains and bagels don’t seem to be a healthy alternative. Idk… I’m just so lost right now 😔 thank you for this info Dr. Berry! I’m so so thankful for your videos and all the information you put out there. God bless 🙏🏼❤️

At 14 weeks i was still diagnosed with GD (3rd pregnancy, didnt have it with the first 2) The only carbs I eat are low carb veg and some fruit and yet I was still diagnosed with GD. So people on carnivore diet can still get it. You dont have to be eating packaged processed foods to get GD

It may actually be so, that people who do carnivore do not get GD. The problem is that for people not following the standard diet all these tests may show something uninterpretable. Let's say you don't eat carbs at all, and your blood sugar stays more or less constant and completely normal. Then you get whopping 75g of carbs at once during the test and measure high sugar values because that's NOT the food you are used to eat. Afterwards you proceed living your life with constant sugar, actually having no diabetes. This is partly the same story with high cholesterol for keto/carnivore.

Wow. So this video is very misleading especially coming from a doctor. Eating 2 many carbs will NOT give you gestational diabetes. Smh. It is the placentas fault, not your diet. I was low carb even before pregnancy, and I still have GD. I am NOT over weight, I weighed in at 92 pounds pre-pregnancy. I did NOT have type1 or type2 before becoming pregnant. I also got my glucose test at 16 weeks. They won’t prescribe a continuous monitor just because you want it, (insurance won’t cover it) instead they’ll tell you to get a monitor and check after meals.

Exactly. This video is nonsense. I have been on a low carb diet for years. I am currently eating low carb and getting great after meal sugar levels but the diet doesn’t even touch my fasting numbers. The idea that he is basically just putting all the blame on bad diet just shows how uneducated he is on how the placenta and hormones play a huge roll in this diagnosis. There is a reason why the second you deliver the placenta the mom is no longer diabetic. I fully believe that a diet is completely necessary to ensure that your baby is healthy in spite of this issue, however stop blaming women who are eating properly and trying to fear monger your agenda.

The question is how was your GD diagnosed? Based on sugar tolerance test, which values were high? What was A1C? Did you do well at the end? There is really a problem with applying the standard reference ranges and approaches to blood tests of keto and carnivore people. We are different and interpretation of the results should be different. On paper you may be GD according to standard of care. But are you really?
