As always, your video is crystal clear and super-knowledgable, very informative. Thanks! Especially for telling me that's a "Norwegian purl" -- I've seen that in some how-to videos, and had no idea what the heck they were doing! Now I know.

It was never explained to me that the long tail cast on was just a row of knit stitches, with your thumb being used as a needle. It never occurred to me, either, I just learned the method, and that was that. It makes perfect sense, then, that doing the same thing, only purling, would produce the desired result. I learned the Norwegian purl stitch out of frustration, and it has served me well, but it's not my everyday purl (I know of at least three ways of purling, and all but one produce the same result). I agree, regular purling is insanely frustrating when casting on, but I find the Norwegian purl stitch makes sense; I strongly suggest we all at least try to learn it.

Thank you, Roxanne! I knit since 42 years but only from time to time, seldom months or so at one project like when l knitted a pullover for me (that was the first project, with a round pullover passe, knittet as top down raglan by guess andby gost. So l do until nowadays: lenever use a given pattern, l take messures of the person my fabric will be made for and begin to knit. It's so wonderful to see how well the fabric fits after finished! )I need well your in this video shown tip cause l've problems with the smoothness of the sides! I sometimes have them different(ly?)! l'll give this tip here a try and thank you for all your work for us! Be blessed!

Really cool! I figured out what you've taught me is called the alternating cast on a couple of months ago (not having a name for it), and was thinking of it as a proper ribbed form of the LTCO, but it hadn't even occurred to me that it was missing the idea of a tail vs a working yarn alternating between the front and back. Kinda obvious now, but it's one of those brilliant kinds of obvious that you don't see for a while. Really nice breakdown.

I love long tail cast on in pattern! Easier and more adaptable than tubular but just as clean IMHO. The purl is tricky in western continental , so I cast on my purls with an eastern mount and that's much easier.

Yup, that's another way to make the process work better.

I had no idea that the purl cast on method I was taught was the Norwegian purl! I love casting on in pattern anytime I am going to start a ribbing whether flat or in the round.

Thank you for your video. I'd like to know if you know some bind off technique to mach perfectly with alternating LTCO. Greetings from Brazil

The half-hitch bind off can create an edge that looks like the smooth side of the LTCO or the bumpy side, but alternating that would produce an edge that is 1/2 stitch off of the knit/purl pattern, so unfortunately, I don't know of a way to make that work.

@@RoxanneRichardson Thank you for your answer. I found an interesting technique called interlock bind off: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o997p5WC3c6rY6M.html

How many stitches does it need to be? How do you make it go all around the head? Do you connect it?

Well did the alternating cast on, but dropped several of the cast on stitches . Is there a video on how to fix?

I don't have one. On the rare occasions it happens to me, I just redo the cast on.

when you start casting on 90 st , 2 k and 1 p, do you count the first as a knit stitch??
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 4 жыл бұрын
If I'm knitting flat, yes. When knitting in the round, the answer depends on how you handle that first st when joining in the round.

Can you cast on reversibly using the cable cast on?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 5 жыл бұрын
Sure. You enter between the two sts on the left needle purlwise. You'll have to try it to see whether it's worth the effort or not. While I find the two faces of the standard cable cast on look different, the difference isn't as obvious to me as with the LTCO. I also find that while the result of casting on in pattern creates a reversible edge (one that looks the same on both sides) it doesn't particularly look like the cable cast on. That point of transition when you switch between a knit and a purl creates a different look at the edge than you get with a standard cable CO. Still, it's worth trying, so that you can determine for yourself whether or not you enjoy the process and/or the result.
