As a brand new pass that's only been taught to pass the reverse manoeuvre needed for the test this was very helpful to me. I do think that the reverse test should be at least reversing into a parking bay

As someone who has taught students reversing in motor cars to test standard I've always reckoned HGV class1 driver s to be the most talented drivers. This very informative and clear video has cemented my opinion. Great reversing skills and keeping it real in a working yard with real moving hazards to deal with! I see HGV drivers doing impossible reverses in far too small supermarket car parks, in the dark, in the wet, with parked cars every which way! Much respect to you all.

Good tutorial. The instructor is decent; knows what he's doing and explains everything well. Also the other guy did really well; top reversing. I used to be a shunter driver in a factory yard and passed on my second attempt. Difficult skill to learn and what I found is that there isn't a lot of middle ground when learning to reverse a lorry; either you are good at it or terrible! Top tip: practice shunting trailers in an area with limited forward movement because there will be times on the job when you have hardly any room to manoeuvre.

Would love to see more of this kind of content Jason. Especially with the licenses being combined soon, my main fear is going to my first job as a fresh pass having only experienced the one reversing manouver which you can just remember what to do based on the cones and being confronted with a tight bay or challenging reverse where you actually have to know how to manipulate your trailer and adjust to the surroundings. I was recommended this video 5 years later in the comments of a vlog, and as far as I've seen, it's still by far the best guide on KZfaq. There's a lot of information about passing the tests and vlogs following people on the job, but very little as detailed as this on the in depth techniques and mindsets that really help the new drivers being thrown in at the deep end.

Passed my test at 21(now 37) only ever drove lowloaders for 10 years in and out of new housing estates cars everywhere got good at blind siding, no problems. Had a bit of a career change. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I’m now back behind to wheel delivering to DCs and it’s like I’ve never drove one. I still struggle to back on a bay my angles can still go to shit I still can’t get use to reversing with an automatic gearbox. Iam a 55year old, who has had a class 1 since I was 21. In that time I have only done a handful of class 1 jobs. Mainly done class 2 tipper work. Not driven any trucks for around 15 years due to health issues. But now looking to return to some sort of driving work. I am stressing about my reversing ability after so long. So loved watching your video to pick some great pointers. I could just do with an hour or so, doing some manoeuvring around a yard like yours. To renew my confidence.👍

Very good training there. Wish i had the same training when I passed the class 1. The driving school only teaches you to drive an reverse on a certain level just to pass the test. I recently had an assessment and faild because I was unable to put the trailer on a bay. The positioning at the beginning is very important, I didn't know that. Hopefully next time I'll do it better.

Great video, like the drive it in rather than reverse it in advice that will be really helpful, just passed my class 1 and have already failed a job assessment because I can't reverse, I really feel like you are taught how to pass the reverse exercise because of time limitations rather than actually how to reverse. I could really do with an hour of practice reversing into bays like this guy had.

I smiled all the way through this video.. so good .. thanks Jason . I drove triple spits on Seddys for 10 years when I was young then did 20 years of IT sat at a desk, now about to take my medical to get my Class 1 back and go back to driving at 53. In all the years I did IT I don't think I was ever as happy as I was at the wheel of a bendy one. But I still get the shivers when I think of blindsiding it. Over confidence causes more accidents then lack of experience in my opinion. 100 shunts is better than one accident. But I'm nervous as hell of the reversing after all this time, but Ill do what i was taught by my old driving mentor, slow as fuck.. safe as fuck.. again thanks Jay.

I've not long passed mate last week and for me the reversing was the hardest part. I know it sounds obvious but just take the shunt if you have to mate. On my lessons I was fighting the trailer so hard at times if I left it go one way or the other sometimes that'd I'd just mess it up completely and lose.my head. I messed the reverse up on my test but I took the shunt, took the minor and didn't put myself into any silly situations for the sake of not getting one minor. I hope everything goes well for you mate

Bonnie glad it helped. Just take it one step at a time. Be aware of your surroundings. If you’re not sure, get out and walk around the vehicle.

Was kind of thrown in to taking my Class 1 after never in my 47 years of life getting into such a big beast, so, after only 14 hours training, I take my test tomorrow and probably like many others was shitting myself about the reversing side of things as it confused the fluff out of me. This video has give me a bit more insight so fingers crossed for tomorrow...Thanks

When doing my training I was doing fine on the reversing, getting in 1st with my head out of the window. Instructor then tells me try not to stick your head of the window and use your mirrors. I found it a lot easier with my head out and looking back. Afterwards I was doing fine, getting a bit to cocky and taking a a shunt or 2 but getting in for a pass. On the actual test you're mind just goes blank and your nerves kick in bit luckily I did fine and passed with 2 shunts, the examiner said I didn't have to take the 2nd one, I know but I wanted the trailer straight in the bay.
