Ayyyeeee 5th gen Prelude squad where you at?

If you talk to people that used to own this generation Prelude and have moved to more sophisticated or faster cars, almost all of them still reminisce positively about their time with the car. Some of them even come back to it because they like it so much! And I totally agree that there's something to be said when driving a car that's, as subaruwrxfan says, is very raw and analog. It's certainly a driver's kind of car. I have a Type SH myself (got it new 17 years ago to date), and I enjoy it now as much as I did back then. :-) I just can't find myself to part with her even with other cars in our stable.

Prelude would've been beast if it was RWD, it would've had more potential like the s2000. I still love the preludes tho. Own one myself:)

The prelude's neutral feeling can be attributed to double wishbone suspension! The prelude was never meant to be off the line fast but a balanced torquey drivers car. Also the SH model you drove has ATTS unit which is a huge feature as it helped the lude be crowned C&D driver's best handling car under $30k in 97.

Honda could build a car like the Prelude again whether it be RWD or FWD and it'd be awesome, but I guess honda would rather build Accord coupes that don't sell.

As an owner of 2 Honda Preludes, I can say these things are still as sexy 15 to 20 years later as they were day 1!!!! Honda really screwed up dropping them. I love my Preludes:) If Honda would only get off of its ass and start making some fun coupes again.

I've owned many cars and my black 98 prelude was possibly my favorite. Chassis was great and extremely stable at very high speed on the highway. 90 felt like 50. decent power, great looks, high quality, fun car.

If you have headphones on, you can hear a baby crying if you pay attention while he's talking about backseat space. Once I started hearing it, I couldn't unhear it lol. But you really gotta pay attention in order to find it the first time, I noticed around 4:00.

You didn't mention the difference between a standard prelude and the SH model?

The vtec crossover on the h22 is crazy loud. I had a 3 inch exhaust with a header plus intake, the best sound.

honda does great manual transmissions, NOT automatic transmissions. the 98-02 accord automatics were Terrible.

Daily drove a 2000 SH for two years. Totally miss that car, excellent transmission/shift feel

I sold my 5th gen prelude for a first gen G35..... and I totally regret it. The prelude was so much more fun.

Watching this brought back all the memories I had with my amazing Prelude. I love this car, and you did such a great job reviewing it. I graduated to a S2000 5 years back, but I still have moments when I wish i was driving my old Lude. I would go far as saying that it was my favourite car that i've ever owned. Not as fast as my S2k, but it was such a fun car to drive. Smiles ear to ear!! Was so confidence inspiring, coupled with that amazing H22’s sound. Well done, now i want to buy another one haha. No matter what car I have I will always keep an early 2000s honda as my dd. Their just so small, light and fun to drive and best of all that lovable door chime.

I've had a 97 and now a 00' and i love the prelude so much. Like he said such a good all around car with enough aftermarket support to make it whatever you want to be. Show car, drag car, daily etc. just get used to topping off the oil every 1000 miles hahaha

A peach of a car. Had a new one in 1998 and I still remember it as one of the best and most fun cars I ever owned. Great engine, brilliant chassis. They were very under rated.

There aren't that many out there because they all rusted out or were given the fast and furious treatment....

Preludes actually do have nice sound systems because of the 'Acoustic Feedback System" for fat jams...

my favorite KZfaqr in one of my favorite cars. I had 2000 Honda Prelude, the car that made me fall in love with cars and introduced me to car culture

I had one just like this in silver with black cloth interior. I noticed right away that this car doesn't have the stock shift knob. I was happy to see that the owner kept the stock Honda SH specific wheels. I have very fond memories of my old 2001 Prelude SH. The first week I bought it, I took it to the mountains taking curves in it. When new, the gear box is quite tight, and smooth like a bolt -action rifle. Even after I reached 170K on the odometer, the gear box in my car retained it's tight feel. Cars that have been abused, and or shifted poorly tend to lose that feel in the gear box. This car with a good set of sticky tires will pull a G off of the line. In stock form they are a brilliant daily driver for a single person without a family of their own. When properly professionally modified, they will provide astounding power for the engine size. In stock form, the handling is as good as any Porsche that isn't equipped with all wheel drive. They are quite solid, and composed at higher speeds like many of the German sports cars. .

Glad to see that you're having fun (: I myself have one of these as well, a 2000 Type SH. You should've mentioned what it is that makes the SH different from the base models and that's the Active Torque Transferring System (ATTS). The torque vectoring in this vehicle was an engineering marvel back in its day. It handles a lot more better in corners than the base model Preludes. Still, great video 👍👌 I'm glad people such as myself are still enjoying these vehicles and that they're getting the attention they deserve

Damn, I didnt know the last preludes pushed out 200 hp. Nice. Sounds great too. Can't argue the looks either. I remember my dad bought a new prelude back in 1990 and when I was around 10-11, I sat in his lap and controlled the steering wheel while we did 110 mph! Obviously he had his hands right next to the wheel, but man I remember thinking that was so cool.

best car review ever! I love that excitement, it's so spot on my own feeling when I tried the Honda Prelude 1999 with 200 hp. Funnest car I'd ever driven. I'm picking it up tomorrow. This video just made me realize even more how I've made the right decision!

My wife's first new car in college was her 98 Prelude 5spd in Glacier Ice Blue with black interior. We used to love speed shifting and if you kept it between 5500 and 7200 rpms the VTech was ALIVE with power, almost the feel of secondaries opening on my 66 Barracuda. Her Prelude could closely hang with my 92 Stang...very impressive for a stock Honda 4 banger! It also handled just like a go-cart which was so much fun to carve corners on a 2 lane windy road. We kept it stock and pristine with the only cosmetic change being Testarossa shadow vent graphics to give it character. After our first child was born in Dec 05, I bought my wife for her bday in Jan 06 a 2006 Pilot EXL which she still drives. I drove her Prelude til 08 when we sold it, and it still looked new and drove strong, but was not practical to fit a car seat into the rear. 4 cars later for me and my daily driver is a 2018 Accord 2.0T, and let me say, Honda finally knocked it out of the park with this one!

To this day after owning the SE for 21 years it still gets a lot of praise from on-lookers young and old. My baby has an enduring quality that drives like a race horse. Too much fun for such a long time makes it hard to say goodbye. So i dont say it and keep it running fast and strong.! :)

Man not just a car for kids, I'm 37 and really Desire one of these, they were so cool when they first came out, that front end design was pretty cool at the time, I think they've aged pretty well. Its a shame they've got that reputation of being driven by hoodie wearing teen morons, I think I'll get one anyways despite the moron car-teen demographic that plagues them )

I regret selling mine. Bought it brand new for $25k back in 98 which was kind of expensive for the time. Put 200k miles on it and it still drove close to new. I sold it in 2011. I bet it's still running. Fun car.

I heard "smooth"about ten times and absolutely agree. It is the one word that best describes the Prelude. Remarkable thing is the smoothness is achieved without isolating the driver from the road.

Those headlights aren't stock. Also you never talked about the ATTS which is the whole point of buying a Type SH over a base.

I really do miss cars like this, and your video squarely hit the nostalgia mark. I had a ‘93 si, a ‘97 base, and a ‘99 Type SH, so I was definitely a Prelude fan back in the day. When the VTEC kicked in just north of 5200 RPM, it always induced a grin. It wasn’t “fast” at all by current standards, but it was more direct, pure and fun than most of the overly digitized and relatively sterile high-HP platforms (BMW, cough) we’re now offered. The only criticism I had for the late Prelude - other than the Seinfeld era cloth seating surfaces - was the desperate need for a sixth gear. I remember many miles of highway cruising at 4000 or so RPM in 5th. Thanks and keep up the good work representing the north hills of the 412!

just sold mine for $2000 cad, theres so many of them around where i live, you can pick up a mint one for 3k with 150km on it, loved mine, wanted something newer

I own a 2001 prelude and I don't think the fuel mileage is all that great. Even if I drive slow I get about 400-500km a tank or 248-310 miles for you Americans. And that's from 60L of Premium gas

Preludes in my opinion are one of the most sporty little things ever built i myself own a 1988 prelude si 5 speed with 240,000 miles on it and even with it being high mileage it still runs amazing they are extremely fun to own im hoping to come across a somewhat clean 5th gen to add to my collection i just wish honda didnt discontinue making them god only knows what potential the prelude could have these days great review man it was very enjoyable and honest 👍🏻 prelude gang🤘🏻🤘🏻

For those wondering about the Type SH designation, it means Super Handling and it refers to the Active Torque Transfer System (ATTS) which was an early torque vectoring system. Torque vectoring by power not by braking like modern exotic cars. When cornering torque is taken away from the inner front wheel and added to the outer front wheel pushing the front end towards the apex and reducing understeer. Only top spec Prelude Type SH have ATTS. Type SH is not a Type R which is a more raw focused machine.

The 2.2L I4 VTEC is a legendary motor that time has sadly forgotten. I had a 1999 Prelude and miss that car so much especially that 5-speed transmission.

I absolutely love my Prelude! I have a 99 5th gen with 138k miles🔥 It drives and handles so well around curves and on straight roads, it’s so much fun bro. I’ve had all kinds of car but this one is the best I’ve had so far! The interior is immaculate for its age and the stock sound system sounds amazing for such an old car, I’m surprised. Definitely never getting rid of it 🤙🏾
