This is a review and demo for the De'Longhi EC155 15 BAR Pump Espresso and Cappuccino Maker.
Make sure you get a good espresso ground coffee (freshly ground way better), the actual grind is also very important, it needs to be one notch above Turkish grind. While this machine doesn't require tamping, the shot turns out way better. Practice the steaming with a thermometer at first, at some point you won't need it. Really the best part of this machine is that at the end, the coffee is really good. Also, anything above 18 months of use I'll be really happy. (I use it a few times a day)

If you'd like a perfect shot of espresso, there are a few things you need to monitor. - your draw should be between 25-30 seconds - weigh your ground beans, then weight your output. Your input to output ratio should be between 1:2 and 1:2.5, for this particular model, as my brother is currently using, the portafilter basket fits 14 grams of coffee. So your output should be between 28 grams to 35 grams. Not less than 28, and not more than 35. - you should always try to tamp at 30 lbs pressure. There are many ways to do it, such as putting your portafilter on top of a scale and tamp till you see 30 lbs, or another way is to get a calibrated tamper. - with the above constant set, your last step is to play with the coarseness of the ground beans. If you're drawing more than 35 grams in 25-30 seconds, you need to grind your beans finer. If less than 28 grams, then you need to make it coarser. Finally, taste your espresso shot. The best way is to make a simple Americano. A double shot Espresso, mix it with 2 oz of hot water, and that makes it an Americano. Why I choose Americano? It's not as thick and concentrated, and it's easier on your tongue pallete. If your coffee tastes sour, it means you've under-extracted. If it's too bitter, it means you've over-extracted. If it's under extracted, there are a few things you could do, such as making the grounds finer, increase tamping, increasing the temperature (should be between 91C to 95C max, not too high and not too low), and you could draw the espresso for a few seconds longer. But your final output shouldn't be more than 2.5x your input grammage. If it's over extracted, then reduce coarseness, decrease tamping, decrease temperature, reduce draw for a few seconds, and as usual, try not to go below 2.0x your input grammage. Once your espresso shot is perfect, the term I'd like to call, the GOD SHOT, your espresso will taste perfect. It shouldn't be sour, and neither should it be bitter. It should be balanced, full of flavor. With perfect espresso shot, all milk based espresso drinks will taste superior, too. If your beans are fresh, usually 1 week to 4 weeks from roast date, you should be able to get like a ratio of half crema and half dark espresso the very moment the shot is drawn. The reason why I do not suggest using volume to measure is because if the beans aren't as fresh, you wouldn't be pulling as much crema, and therefore, the volume would be less than compared to fresh beans that have lots of crema. Crema is basically a lot of gas, and if you leave them on the counter long enough, the crema would be gone, but your weigh will still maintain. That's why well trained baristas are told to use weight as benchmark instead of volume. Good luck and hope you get your perfect shot, soon, as I see so much problems from your video, and hope you could improve on it. Cheers.

Wilson you have a lot of knowledge but I want people to know that it is not so complicated and really simpler than all that to make good espresso and coffee drinks. Just follow the owner's manual that comes with the machine! Simple as that. You need to: 1) Grind your coffee to the right fineness/particle size for the brew method . 2) Warm up the machine to get maximum steam pressure. 3) Put two level TBSP of pre-ground or fresh coffee in the basket using the measuring spoon that comes with it. Steam the milk, brew the coffee, and sugar, milk, syrups and your done. My Hamilton Beach machine costs a few dollars more than this one and is probably a little easier to use. 😁

Good demo-only addition is that I always remove the frothing nozzle immediately after use and run hot soapy water through it. Then I reattach it and blast some steam through it. I also run the portafilter empty after making shots which helps release coffee grounds that were caught (I always see coffee grounds flush into the portafilter when I do this so I religiously do this) I’ve had this machine for 2 years and I love it

Some of these comments are hysterical. I love the hipster and technical jargon from the espresso masters. All that matters is whether or not he enjoys his coffee. Press away my friend, tamp as much as you want, run it twice, even three times if you like the way it comes out.

Some things I learned that helped my shots TEN fold to save some of you some time and get the best out of this machine. It is quite capable of producing high quality shots you'd normally get from a high end machine. 1) Depressurize the Portafilter. If you don't, you will get crema and the shot will look really nice, but the crema is fake and the shot will taste sour/bitter. Trust me. This is easy to do, google it. 2) Cut off the bottom of the Portafilter to make it bottomless. By doing this, you can watch the extraction and see if the shot if being pulled correctly. This helped me hugely because I wasn't pulling shots evenly and coffee was going everywhere. This is fairly easy as well. 3) Let the machine warm up for a bit, regardless of the green light to reach optimal temps. If your shots are not coming out good with a decent amount of crema after the above steps, now you can focus on your technique. At least youll have the truth and not fake shots from the pressurized filter. Once you get that down, you will be making some truly amazing and delicious shots from this little guy.

Dennis Flanagan Why would you do that if you can make some simple adjustments on this? It performs amazingly well for the money after what I suggested. And of course, if anyone knows anything about coffee, the first thing you should focus on is the grinder. Much more important than the espresso machine. I recommend the Hario Skeleton.

Hi mate, upon watching your review and reading a large number of your comments below, all I can say is bravo to you sir, i do believe your relatively new to espresso preparation, and yes there was a lot of things you did not do the right way but I'm sure with a good barista course you could fix a lot of those things. Cool review and keep chipping away. P.S once you have finished with one extraction throw it away never re-use extracted coffee.

Bought a De'Longhi EC 190 a year ago and it is brilliant. Moving from a paper filter machine to an Espresso machine was best move I could have made for a better coffee experience. It can be the pump is reducing in pressure ( still make a nice cuppa all be it slower ) but after well beyond 1000 cups what can you expect. Will buy De' Longhi again.

Hi, thanks for spending time to present EC155! Great machine for the beginner investigator of coffee appliances. Could I suggest you to try and taste sometimes what the coffee in you second shot is like, before you decide to add it to the drink. To me it is awful liquid, and for that matter - tailing half of your first shot is mostly like that. For the quality drink, don't let coffee become transparent watery substance, stop just before that coming out. You will get less, but of better coffee, which added to your milk should be more enjoyable as well. Another thing - you were tapping basket real hard, be aware that this black bottom, you hold to, becomes fragile and breaks easy as plastic ages. Better hold to the metal body. And don't hurry while it is hot, really inconvenient. I usually deal with it before preparing the next cup. Also, I would not place it on intermediate object above the hard surface, you some lining, if you care this much, but not an object, reducing stability. Hopefully you are still friends with the apparatus, years later.

The combination of tamp and grind will impact how well the shot's extracted. I can't use a grinder at home (the fam is still sleeping when I make my morning cap!) so I live with the store ground beans. I found that if I grind them one or two clicks back from the finest setting, and give it a pretty decent tamp, I can get a respectable amount of crema and good taste. Too much tamping slows it down and makes it bitter. Good luck!

Good video!! Thanks so much. I just got this other espresso machine: DeLonghi BAR32 Retro 15 BAR Pump Espresso and Cappuccino Maker It's very very similar to the machine you have. I got it second hand from my local Buy Nothing group on FB. And, I wasn't sure how to use it, because it's my very 1st espresso machine!! But I didn't wanna go read a whole freaking boring manual!! 😅😂 So, I really appreciate this well made instructional video. I gotta say though, I was thrown off by how the hot water just keeps pouring through and it doesn't stop unless I turn it off. I just made my 1st espresso. And I'm not sure what to think. BAHAHAHAHA. I mean, I liked it, but I'm not sure if I did it totally right. For example I don't have a seperate tamper and judging by regards you said, I'm pretty sure I didn't tamp hard enough. I'm also fairly new to drinking coffee regularly. I was pretty much a tea drinker my whole life. Even though I know how I like my coffee to taste (comparatively), because by now I've had drip coffee and Americanos at a bunch of places, I'm not sure if I know what really good coffee is supposed to taste like. Oh and I also take a fair bit of brown sugar and cream in my coffee. Still I can tell which coffee tastes I prefer over others. Do you recommend any preground coffee brands for espresso making? Today I made my espresso/Americano with the machine I have, with Lavazza Rossa 5/10 intensity level preground coffee. It's an Italian brand. Any tips? Did you ever end up investing in a fancier espresso maker? Thanks so much again. ✌️😀💕

I have a slightly older model (EC-140B). It was a hand-me-down from a friend who got anewer, machine that even grinds the beans and loads the basket itself(!) So mine is kind of old but still doing well. The basket is just the same as your model. Contrary to your technique tho', I prefer to let the coffee grounds dry a little bit - maybe even overnight? This means the metal will not be HOT, but even better, the ground can be popped out of the basket in a piece - like a hockey puck. This means it doesn't leave the wet traces of grounds in the basket; but comes out almost perfectly. Also, I prefer not to "tap" (ie. bang) away on the handle and basket when emptying/cleaning it out. Instead, I unscrew the black nut at the bottom of the basket, after lifting it up out of the handle. By then pressing on the black threaded part where the nut was screwed on, you can remove the stainless steel screen (filter) and black rubber washer, too, if you want to do a deeper cleaning on occasion.

Traditionally, a single shot is 1 - 1.5 ounces. He did use the double-shot basket, but I think he actually pulled four shots out of one puck. That won't taste very good by itself - it would be pretty bitter.

Thanks, I may just make a video to show how to use it without too much fluff. I think you either don't tamp it enough (are you using the built in one?) or the grounds are too course. Is the shot ok? I've noticed a big difference if it's just a little bit too coarse...

The comments mention the espresso is too watery, does anyone else believe it might be due to the grounds being slightly too coarse? My humble experience says too fine and coffee comes out one drop at a time, to coarse and the water pours out too fast. Getting the grind just right is a priority. Otherwise this appears to be a fine "budget" machine. Thanks for the informative video

I have the ecc221 which is basically the same but updated model, mine needs minimal tampering otherwise the flow of water is restricted, and the steamer is terrible.

Okay -me again (and mine is the DeL' model EC-140B). This time I've a question for you about WHY the removable water reservoir is shaped to leave so much extra room on one side of the compartment where reservoir is enclosed? A smaller recessed corner of that tank would still leave room for the TWO tubes there. One of the tubes has a very fine filter on its end; the other tube has none. I suspect the filtered one feeds the coffee filter/basket, and the open ended tube goes to the steam nozzle. Question, should I be putting that tube with NO filter, IN the water tank, or OUTSIDE of the tank and out of the water. I doubt it, but still, it looks like that space is there to make room for the un-filtered tube (and why no filter on THAT tube)?

When you first opened it, did you have to run only hot water through the whole machine five times without actually putting ground coffee in it to clean it up? Thats what the instruction booklet says. Thanks!

Thank you so much for this video. I have had my machine for a month and made dreaful esspresso. This morning...beautiful espresso with an amazing crema and no soupy grinds! Still haven't figured out how to get water from the steaming wand so I can pre warm my cup. Any pointers would be appreciated!

Turn on the steam knob and set your switch to the brew setting for hot water through the wand.

Hi ureviews! Thanks for your video. How fine is your ground coffee? Did you grind your coffee beans to espresso level? It looks like the ground coffee you use is coarser than it should be for espresso (as I know espresso requires finer ground coffee). Cos I also got the EC155, but when I use fine ground coffee, the water comes out very slowly. Whenever I switch to coarser ground coffee (as for paper filter), the problem is gone. Im kinda confused whether the EC155 has good pump or not.
