Should you use Brakenetic slotted drilled rotors? Should you use semi-metallic or ceramic brake pads. Do Brakenetic stand behind their products? Do they even test their products?
These are all issues I touch upon in this video review.
This review details the issues I ran into with noise coming from the rear Brakenetic rotors installed on my 2015 Toyoda Highlander and the complete lack of support Brakenetic provided when I contacted them concerning the problems I encountered using their product. If you are considering installing their rotors, you might want to watch this video. I was quite disappointed in how they handled things after I notified them of the issues involving the use of their rear slotted / cross drilled rotors.
The amount of noise these rotors generated when in use was just comical. It makes me wonder if Brakenetic has ever actually tested the products they are selling to people.
Their front rotors seem to work okay. But after attempting to deal with the company on the rear rotors, I doubt I'll ever do business with the company again. Perhaps my review here will help anyone upgrading or changing their rotors, especially in the back of the car where rotor thickness could be an issue when drilling or slotting is concerned.

Hi Ray! Your definitely right! I'm just now seeing this video (wish I could of seen it before purchasing these front slotted rotors) everything you mentioned in the video was the exact same thing they did to me! I'm just going to go with brembo rotors! Yes! Everyone beware! This company should not be in business what so ever! I play 120.00 for the front rotors! Never again! Your tha best Ray!💚💪🏾

I put Duralo slotted and drilled rotors with Ceramic brake pads on my car a few months ago and right off the bat started noticing a humming/ buzzing sound every time I applied my brakes. It seems to be getting worse and worse. I’m very happy that you put this video up here. This is the only video that I’ve been able to find that’s talking about this issue with slotted and drilled rotors. I’m gonna try replacing the rear rotors first to see if that makes the noise go away but I have a feeling it’s also coming from my front ones as well.

I switched back to solid rear rotors and the noise went away. I tried using ceramic vs. metallic pads in the rear also (with the dross drilled rotors), but the pads didn't make much difference either way. I think basically the rear rotor hats are too much like a bell and something about the slots and holes allows for some sort of resonation or something. It was horribly loud from the back. The front rotors (same company, also drilled and slotted) make no noise, however. The company refused to do anything. I think I ended up just eating the costs. I am not sure if amazon eventually refunded me or not, but I was disappointed that Brakenetic not only didn't do enough R&D on their product, but also didn't stand behind their product.

ive installed many slotted and drilled or both over the years and what I find is when u have a solid non vented disc its best to not do either but if u need it for some reason say track use the holes are usually where the noises come from on a solid disc. the slots DO also make noise but the holes seem to make a lot more as I've used all three types on various cars i.e. slotted only, drilled only, or both. both seems to be the worst.
@mrvang8077

That's a solid brake rotor. You should opt for the vented brake rotor type. They just do a lot better in venting hot air out. Solid brake rotors tend to get super hot, and there's literally no way to dissipate high heat. Ultimately, you will have a warp rotor that'll cause all kinds of vibration and steering wheel shake. I personally don't like solid brake rotors. I just ordered a whole new set of front slotted and vented brake rotor for my crossover suv. The cross drill is more of just a cosmetic look hence why I just opted for the slotted only with ventilated disk rotor. Can't wait to test those new rotor out and see how well they perform versus the stock one that it came with the car. The stock is just not up to the task in an emergency brake. My crossover suv is about 4000 lbs heavy so it's gonna need a lot of distance to come to a complete stop. Hopefully by upgrading to the slotted type brake rotor. My vehicle will stop instantly on a dime or at least half the distance in an emergency brake situation. In extreme hot weather my stock just coast down to a full stop. A couple of times I had to swerve out to the side on the highway. Scares the shit out of me a couple times.

Hi Ray, I just came across your video. After running PowerStop's ceramic pads and cross drilled and slotted rotors on the front of my Jeep Grand Cherokee and jeep Commander I decided to do the rears. First I replaced the rears on my Grand Cherokee and I quickly noticed a 'buzzing" noise when braking. I thought I did something wrong so I took them off and reassesmbled them but I couldnt get rid of the noise. I just did the rears on my Commander and wouldnt you know it, Im getting a buzzing noise when braking. Never happened when running them just in the fronts. Its not as loud as you described but its very annoying. It must be something with the cross drilled/slotted rotors in the rear of the vehicle for some reason. I emailed PowerStop and awaiting to hear what they have to say.

Mark Snowdon yeah, it's a design flaw in their rotors as far as I can tell. It was crazy bad on mine; then the company dicked me around so much I ended up just throwing their rotors into the trash. I can't remember if Amazon eventually refunded me or not. Their front rotors work fine, but the customer service from the company was so awful I'd never do business with them again.

Hey Mark, I just installed Rockauto's Power Stop Z36 heavy duty cross drilled rotors and carbon ceramic pads on my 04' Jeep GC Overland. I must say yeah I have a weird noise that I can't explain when applying the brakes. I installed just the front rotors on my old 01' Jeep GC Laredo & never heard this strange noise. I can best describe the noise as a kid attaching a playing card on his bicycle so that it hits the spokes. It is definitely a weird noise! I've been doing brakes a long time.. but this is the 1st time installing rear slotted/drilled rotors. I can deal with the noise as long as they never warp on me. My 01' Jeep warped brakes almost always. I don't stand on my brakes or ride my brakes so I don't know why? So when I was shopping for brakes for my Overland I went all out with cross drilled rotors all around. Plus cheaper than Advance Auto!! They stop great! I did the whole break in process. But this noise?! So today I Googled does cross drilled rotors make noises and here we are. I still have my old rotors which are still in great shape. When it gets warmer out I'll install just the rears to see if noise goes away. Sorry for the long comment. Have a Happy New Year and great day!

Ugh yes I ha e the exact power stop rotors and that noise is not to bad but It’s noticeable. I’ve noticed that at around 10-20 mph they still have sound even without pressing the brake but when I press the brake they get a little louder. But the second I make a turn it stops then when the tires are straight again.... the noise continues! So is this a defect in the rotor?

Rob Tosoni I also had chronic brake problems with my 2000 Grand Cherokee. I went through several aftermarket rotors thinking it would help. Then I found out that they came out with a different caliper design because so many people were complaining. You want the Akebono calipers. Of course Jeep never did a recall even though I saw so many posts about people having to replace their brakes every year. So for the late reply. I never got a notification about your post.

@brently300
@brently300 3 жыл бұрын
I think you're right about the sound being caused by the rotors being drilled and slotted, but I dont think it has anytbing to do with the material, or how it's made, or "not having enough meat" but I do think the fact that they are thin is related to what I believe the problem is. Those discs are not vented. So the hot brake gasses generated under braking, have nowhere to go until the drilled hole exits the pads. This drastic, rapid change in air pressure causes a sound, happening once per hole, 45 holes per rotor, so 45 times per rotation of each wheel. I could imagine the sound would be loud... Just my theory...
@ray5961
@ray5961 3 жыл бұрын
Brentacus_300 Yeah I think it's related to the rotors being thinner also. The front rotors (by the same company) are much thicker and work fine and do not exhibit any noise issue.

Hey man thanks for this I am having the same headache with my TSX. I bought front and rear slotted rotors and pads from buyautoparts. Man it sounds like a jet when am braking at around 70 or 80 mph. I only installed the front just to see how they work. The rear is still sitting in a box. My mechanic told me yes it is the rotors but he couldn't pin point exactly why it has that loud sound braking at speeds over 50. I went to NTB to service the car and s guy there said it's the holes that's causing the noise. When the air is flowing through the grooves and holes cooling the pads it sends off a howling sound.
@ray5961
@ray5961 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a hassle for sure. I think it has more to do with some sort of resonance, but it's really hard to say. My front rotors are by this same company - also slotted and drilled - and they are perfectly quiet and stop really well (I'm using semi-metallic pads). On the rear, I had to switch back to solid rotors to get the sound to go away; even using ceramic pads didn't help. Only when I went back to solid rotors did the noise in back stop. Like you say, it's a real headache.

thanks this encouraged me not to buy grooved/drilled/slotted discs, as they are mainly sold primarily for looks at the cost of noise and potentially more issues down the road (literally), despite potential helping cleaning break pads if you drive regularly enough with often changing from speeding to breaking to speeding from what I understand. Not worth it, better stick to OEM or equivalent with OE at lower prices but similar performance.

ET53 You're welcome. Hey, just out of curiosity, what is the thickness of your rear rotors? I am starting to think the issue relates to drilled / slotted rotors which are on the thinner side, since the problem doesn't seems to manifest itself with thicker rotors; it's only those which are more like 1/2 inch thick (such as the rear rotors).

Don’t just buy rationally, you got to really look at the design to know if it’s a good rotor or not. Look for all the weak point of the design structural. The major flaws of this type of rotor is the drill holes all so compact weakening the structural integrity and to add insult, it is a one solid rotor with zero surface for the brake pads to bite on. It’s like a hot piece of steel wobbling all over the place and when the brake pad do bite. That rotor will break.

Appreciate it. Not enough ppl on here want to talk about noisiness. So many say it's pads. But there is squealing and noises you're talking about caused by design. Idk if brakenetics has design flaws as more of a noise caused by any drilled or slotted. I don't know alot of ppl with supercars, but I want to know if Porsches, lambos have a noise.. who could hear it with the loud drone. Lol. Anyway, thx again for going into detail. Solid supposed to be in back, I think other companies make vented in back? Probably be worse. There is not enough data. Sometime you have to learn for yourself. Some ppl don't mind the noises for aesthetics. Again, font think design flaw, how much can you do with steel? This company wouldn't get away with charging premium prices if they were shit. Who knows. Oh, and those supercars do you use carbon ceramic, so one rotor is worth more than my life. Later.

Most of their rotors are very nice yeah. I ran their front rotors on my Toyota and they worked great; as you say very good and long lasting. However, the rear ones for this application totally suck and make noise like you've never known. The company clearly didn't test the rear rotors before they started selling them - and worse, when I brought the design defect to their attention, they were pretty much like "whatever, we don't really care". With my case, it was immediate from when I installed then. I traced it to the rotors themselves (their design; being thin). The front ones were fine, but they are thicker of course. I ended up switching over to solid rotors in the back and that cured the issue as soon as I installed them.

No idea. All I can tell you is this particular brand's rear / thin rotors are loud due to their design, which I think creates some sort of resonance or harmonics. Their larger / thicker front rotors do not do this. I think it's a function of how thin these particular rotors are in the rear. When I swapped back to solid rotors off amazon, the sound vanished. I had previously swapped pad types/compounds which didn't resolve the noise issue.

It’s not even vented which is a tell tale sign of a no-good rotor. And those slotted and drill on a 1 piece solid rotor is a weak design that is more than likely prone to warp and crack. Something I would never buy. The overall design is a mediocre at best, not worth looking a. Just seeing gazzilion drill holes on there is enough to convince me that the structural integrity is compromised. There’s just no surface left for the brake pads to bite on.

J M Brembo is good, so is Wilwood. Most Brakenetic and Powerstop stuff is good as well. Myself, I only run semi-metallic pads generally. Check the braking coefficient of the pad material also. If Brembo came factory, I would stick with them. Brembo is top of the line stuff from Italy and standard equipment on Ferrari, etc. It also has to do with the application. In my specific video, the rear brakes had a problem, but I run this same brand in front and it works great.

Don't blame the rotors. The issue is too hard pads.

No, sorry, but that's incorrect information. It's the rotors definitively. After swapping around different rotors and pads, it's definitely the rotors which are at fault. Check some of the other comments and you'll see other people have had the same issues.

theres certainly no need for cross drilled/sotted rotors on a highlander (or my corolla!)

@@ray5961 lol. Those highlanders are tough as nails vehicles. I know two ppl with over 400000km. Most 4 runner owners would be better in a highlander for fuel mileage and ride.

Yeah, if read the comments, a number of people have had this same issue. Front ones are okay, but the thin rear ones make a bunch of noise. I had to switch back to stock in the rear and was out the money on these rear ones.

I kinda think you should have talked to them instead of just playing the refund dissatisfaction card. So tired of complaining. The jet engine noise would have been a blessing to me. I'll take the excitement.

That's easy to say when you don't actually have the jet noise :) I did try to talk to them several times. They basically called me a liar and told me to get lost; that's when I told them keep an eye out on KZfaq for more information. This isn't about playing the dissatisfaction refund card, it's about a company producing a defective product and then not giving a shit.

@@ray5961 : I thought I heard you say in the video that you did not want to talk to them. Hence, my thoughts. Thanks for the clarification! I don't have any interest in the company in any way. Just looking for actual usage of the products. My decision overall: staying away 90% of the time from non-OEM or suspected substandard. Cheap rotors, been there done that. Disappointment sets in early. And never leaves.

@@horacesawyer2487 It's been a while, but as I remember I messaged them via amazon and they basically just sent me a vague reply saying sorry to hear about your problem, we can offer you 10% off another on of our products. So that didn't help me. I ended up having to call them on the phone and I explained the situation on two different occasions (as I was swapping pads and rotors to figure out exactly where the source of this crazy noise was coming from in order to confirm the horrible sound was in fact their rotors and not pad, etc). When I finally bought different rotors and confirmed it was their rotors, I spoke to them again and explained their product is definitely defective and asked them point blank "did you ever actually test this specific product on a vehicle before selling it to the public" they got all defensive; then I told them that despite the amazon window just closing a few days back, I still want to return the product for refund, because it's clearly defective. They more or less told me to get lost and "sorry, we can't help you; wish we could but we cant". The vibe was we don't care and we don't really even believe you, so just go away please. Anyway, don't let my review on their rear rotors turn you off. I have run other after market rotors off amazon with great success. I actually also ran this company's front rotors on the Toyota Highlander with great success and really loved them. I'd totally order them again. It's just what really upset me is that their rear rotors were clearly defective and never should have been sold without some form of testing at their company. Also, I called them not only to get a refund but also to let them know like "hey, you have a product that you are selling to people which is clearly defective" and basically they just didn't even care. If you read the other comments below, other people have had to deal with this same issue and I would wager a bet that the company is still selling this exact product to people. I went through a tremendous hassle swapping pads and rotors on my Toyota due to this; not like I didn't have anything else to do. So the entire situation just really got under my skin. Maybe other model rear rotors from this company work fine, but I can tell you definitively that the rotors featured in this video for the 2015 Toyota Highlander are garbage and that the company doesn't really seem to care. With all that said, I'd still buy their rotors, so long as they are the thicker design and not the thin ones that are more like 10mm thick with the cross drilled holes. Life goes on.
