REVIEW: Bass Fingers by Waves Audio

Our friends at Waves Audio have given us a first look at their latest virtual instrument. Bass Fingers is a new virtual electric bass plugin that works well for are genres but more specifically Hip-Hop, R&B, Soul and other genres alike.
The plugin is consistent with other quality virtual Bass instruments. However, there are a few features that we really enjoy and we can see ourselves using it in our future music production and sound design projects.

Agree with your review. For 29.00 (today's price), it's almost a no-brainer. The only thing I'm wondering about is the size of the midi player you need to take full advantage. I use an M-Audio Oxygen 25 and I'm wondering if that will be sufficient. Maybe 61 keys is needed.

Seeing how it's a bass, 25 keys (I assume that's what the 25 means...) is more than enough to make good use of the instrument. We used tiny keyboards sometimes to test it when we developed it. Works great :)

Thanks for watching. The only reason you might need a bigger keyboard is if you want to use the Keyswitch Function and play higher bass notes at the same time. You could record the bass in one go, then go back over with the Keyswitch keys with your 25 key controller in the meantime

Thank you for such a great review. How does this stack up against NI and Orange Tree sample bass libraries?

We haven't used Orange Tree, but it's on par with NI's Rickenbaker or Jay Bass instruments from a pure sample/sound perspective. However, Bass Fingers has a dedicated way to add action sounds or dead notes etc with the Keyswitch which is really nice. Also the effects in Bass Fingers are way more comprehensive. The ONLY thing I wish Bass Fingers had, was a way to get that short roll up sound when you hard-press a key, NI and Trillian has that feature. The Keyswitch only has the base notes for each string, but not a way to roll to a specific note. Overall BF is better that the competition as a total package.

As Tim said, it's on sale for $25 right now! Purchased it, can't wait to DL it and play with it. P&J, I agree that it's an awesome package, but you really undersold two of the most powerful features to make a realistic performance. The position on the neck DRASTICALLY alters the tone, attack, punch etc. so mastering that feature is gonna give you a more realistic performance. The one you didn't mention, is the velocity slider, which not only moves up (L>R), but down (R>L) so you can limit the range of velocity, especially great if you want a more aggressive bass track, or the opposite, you want to eliminate the gnarly end of the scale. Otherwise great review - thx

Hey Craig, We appreciate the review of the review ;-) -- We could have gone into more depth about those functions but we didn't want to take up too much of the viewers time. As we said, we aren't professional bass players, just sound designers/producers. So, we took the time to highlight the functions that stood out for us from that standpoint and we would use it sound design and/or production.

Guys, I read somewhere that it's quite a memory hog and takes years to load. Can you say anything about this?

Hi. Cool instrument. And a nice review. Will there be other bass samples in the future? A bass emulation is really missing in my setup and if one got none I wonder if you would recommend to buy this one. Would be glad to hear your opinion. I own not a single wave plugin. Does it require a dongle and can I install it on 2 computers? Thank you in advance.

So I'm not sure if there will be future updates/additions to the actual samples in Bass Fingers, but we can find out. That would be really nice if they did, but it sounds really good as-is. Right now you can use the Promo code HALF at checkout and get it for $24.50! It's great bass emulation tool and for that price it's a no-brainer! We recommend you check it out.

So this article can explain the update plan much better than we can (www.waves.com/support/waves-v10-frequently-asked-questions) But I’ve used waves plugins long after the update plan expired, I only had to pay for a new plan when I bought a new computer and had to update to the latest version (v10).

@@nichttuntun3364 the WUP..... the plugin will work after the WUP has expired. it will work, untill there are too much changes in your OS, the plugin does not work anymore. in windows it can be 5 years, for example. if you are on mac, then the story is different. but the plugin will not stop working.

You need to check out IK Multimedia MODO BASS. It has a lot more to it than this one but at a much higher price. Bass Finger is ok for the money but there is a few bass guitar plugins out that I think is better and better sounding far as realism bass. Modo Bass has 14 different basses to choose from, you also can select the playing style you want such as Finger, Slap or Pick. You can changed the type of strings, move your pick-up position. It has everything. I’m a bass player and I was very impressed. Check it out.

Definitely! This would sound pretty good in a live setting, as long as your computer can handle a smaller buffer for low latency

The load time sucks. I spoke wtth tech support today because it takes over an hour to load the damn sample library. The tech Yuri said they are considering telling people its mandatory to have 16 gigs of ram.

Yeah the samples are a beast lol, but you can hear the quality
