Michael Terrell Heh, I got an imitation Benchmade for free at a gun show... I'm not even sure what it was imitating other than the butterfly logo with the Benchmade name... there wasn't even a model number or steel type on it. Well, I had that curious convo with the dealer and went on my way... when I walked past his table later he just gave it to me for free. BUSTED! LOL. I gave it to a friend shortly after. But yeah, a $100 Benchmade is a damn cheapo. I own too many because I like Axis-Locks and every outfitter around here sells them. I don't buy anything online, otherwise I'd probably cheat on Benchmade with a Ganzo Axis-Lock.

@@kidthorazine Idk man, I got the Griptillian (customized with the highest end steel and G-10 handle scales) 2 years ago. Have carried it every day, excellent edge retention, not a spot of rust even though I rarely oil it with Ballistol, still hair cutting sharp and with 2 passes with a fine stone and strop is razor sharp. I feel it was worth the $230 I payed for it as the action, ergonomics are excellent for both SD and EDC. In Knives if you spend less than $100 your almost always going to have a bad time. The one exception being Opinel of course, but they (for obvious reasons) dont duel function for SD. Also be aware that their are a significant amount of counterfeit benchmade knives, flouting around allot from India and China, which can be found at gunshows and the like. Obviously if you pay less than 75% of the website price your not going to get what you think you are. This has hurt their reputation for obvious reasons. I am sure that some of Benchmade knives are over priced, but most of their goods are top quality. Plus the Life-sharp guarantee and blade warranty is pretty impressive. As far as Ballisongs are concerned, since the Spyderfly was taken off the market, Benchmade has the best available. TL;DR I Disagree. but do agree that their low end and highest end knives are questionably priced.

If you want a good knife it will cost you. Like most things you get what you pay for. Id recommend other Benchmade knives, which are even more expensive. Havent had good experience with CRKT. If you want a GREAT camping knife (not usable for SD) check out Opinel. Best knife on the market is the No.8 you can get it for less than $20 and it (after an initial sharpening) is the sharpest, and most usable knife out there even the stainless version. I say it is not usable for SD due to how the action works. Perhaps Skall has a review of it, if not; he oughta make one.

I have this, got it cheaper due being an employee at a registered Benchmade vendor. It feels good in the grip and fits well on the back of the hip. Also big thing to mention! The other reason for the price on any Benchmade knife is that they all come with a lifetime warranty on it, if the blade breaks through natural wear and tear then you can ship the blade to Benchmade with proof of purchase (or register and account with them online) and they will fix or replace your blade before shipping it back to you good as new.

Oddly, my son and I were discussing this type of knife a couple of days ago! I think its OK for really skilled martial artists, but very limited, much like a karambit. It’s more a last ditch defense for most people. It’s hard to cut or really use it for anything else but a situation you get in where the winner dies at the hospital/ambulance instead of on the street.Check out the Fred Perrin Street Beat from Spyderco. It has a handle that resists disarms , like this, but a much more useful blade!

... then you have mail it across the country to get your meh steel resharpened... Just kidding, I sharpen my own shit. I'll resharpen utility blades on site instead of switching them... I'll be damned if I send a knife back to a manufacturer if they can't even get the edge profiles right the first time. Anyway Benchie factory edges last about a day until I get annoyed and completely resharpen them... not that the edges aren't sharp, they're just too asymmetric and floopy for the prices... but... gives me something to do.

I have a HK Plan D, which is exactly the same knife with a HK marking by Benchmade. After it discontinued Benchmade gave it a different name and a Benchmade marking- now it's $80 instead of a $50 knife. Knife design is overall good- small but functional. N680 isn't a good edge retaining steel somewhat like AUS-8, but takes a razor sharp edge and doesn't really rust at all with the durable coating. Sheath is definitely the WORST, even worse than the Ka-bar TDI which it was trying to compete with at the time. Both have 2" belt clip for police duty belt but doesn't work well with anything else, but at least Ka-bar keeps its knife inside the sheath. It's a good knife IF you can keep it around, as most people lost it due to the POS sheath with horrible retention. I was lucky enough to "just" drop it on the concrete and bent my fine acute tip right off, so I had a kydex sheath made for it with attachment hardware customizable , and throw away the original one that can't keep the knife inside when you want to, but hinders you from drawing when you need to. PS. It's surprisingly a good box cutter with the wharncliffe blade profile and a angled handle, which delivers a lot more force when power-cutting considering how short the blade is. You have to sharpen it a bit more than VG-10 or 154CM, but it's easy enough just like AUS-8. It's marketed as a self defense, last ditch knife for sure, but it doesn't need to be. It can be a handy little neck knife or an EDC tool if you DON'T use the original sheath
@careyfarley2465
@careyfarley2465 5 жыл бұрын
I thought it was probably a rebranded Plan D. I seriously looked at this as a weapon retention blade when I was in law enforcement, but didn't like the sheath. The TDI sheath worked better. The idea was to carry on your weak side and draw with either hand. I didn't think the Plan D sheath would do that.
@AntonChou
@AntonChou 5 жыл бұрын
@@careyfarley2465 It won't indeed, again the horrible sheath retention design, pardon my french, has no retention whatsoever on one side and impossible to draw with a bolt in the jimping on the other. For a last ditch(as the name Plan D implied) this is definitely strange, as this kind of knife is usually like you said to be drawn with either hand from offside because the other hand is doing weapon retention/guarding/detaining. Actually I had the TDI first, it's more like a weapon but doesn't really do anything else- equally mediocre steel(AUS-8 in this case), better sheath, the blade is even shorter and more angled, like a punch dagger with a versatile grip, focusing on thrusting but doesn't do much cutting.

Your getting a premium lifetime warranty on it so if it breaks via tip breaking off or things like that they will either fix it or send a new one free. plus the lifesharp service. So if you want maintenance on it via loose parts or you want them to sharpen it for you. Then send it to them and they will do that for free.

Europes standards organization? They literally copy and paste from ASTM, the north american organization that started things like "standards" and "quality control" world wide... ok. The non ww2 loser who started quality standards on a global scale.. So, mabe that tag saying "made in the USA" means more then you think. I think I've made a mistake in my phrasing. By "means nothing if you're not from USA" I meant that it's not a good reason to make it more expensive, unless you're from the USA and want to pay more for local stuff (as people are, at least where I live, generally more fond of local stuff). Sorry, should've phrased it better. Btw I'm not a Eurofag as I'm not even really of europian descent.

Benchmade is now and will always be my go to brand of knives, because of how they have stood up to the use I've put mine through. The price is a bit high, but, they have excellent customer support and a lifetime edge warranty, and for free they will put a factory edge back on your blade, so when you consider all the support you get, the price tag feels worth it.

Sorry late to this video. Can you confirm/deny that the clip can be removed and the two holes in the kydex can have paracord fed through so it could then be used as a neck knife? Also I think the main purpose of this knife is for firearm weapon retention. Someone is trying to get your sidearm from the holster, while one hand is securing the firearm the other is drawing this and then attacking the offender's hand/arm/wrist so you maintain control of your firearm.

A company like Benchmade is more expensive because 100% of their knives are USA made. BM doesn’t use Taiwan and China to offset prices. Is there an actual practical use for so-called self-defence knives? Possibly outside military scenarios? Not saying there isn't, just curious as to where would this particular sort of brutality/lethality be warranted.

Picture this, you're walking down the street late and night and someone steps out in front of you with a knife demanding your money. You give them the money, but they decide they don't want you around anyway. Or they just get a kick from stabbing people. Or they don't believe that's all you have and get angry... Or a million other reasons, point is, they come at you... You have seconds to react. You can put your hands up and hope not to die. You can run for it and hope they don't catch up. Or, you can pull a knife of your own. Some would take it, some would try and run, me? I wanna be able to pull a blade quickly and start stabbing back. All comes down to choices... If you have a knife, you have another choice... Multiple choices are good, in my experience.

Fidel Cashflow In basic military training we were thought that you can expect stab-wounds If you ever take part in a knife-fight - even If you win. If there was any resonable Chance to escape that, i would take it. Of course, If you have to fight, any knife beats no knife. Would not spend 100 dollars on a something like this though.

@@antongrahn1499 exactly as you say, no-one walks clean from an active knofe fight. Most cases are severe blood loss for both parties. The primary use for these self defense knifes is counter intimidation. Unarmed mugger vs armed defense Or Armed mugger vs armed defendant In this case the holster catch seems to point me towards the 1st option
@syyskuu
@syyskuu 5 жыл бұрын
@@bengrogan9710 How likely is it to encounter an unarmed mugger in a given situation? How I'm looking at the scenario Fidel is describing above, if the mugger already has his weapon at the ready, and they are already focused, mentally and physically primed and ready to launch and attack without hesitation, while you're still getting to grips with the situation, trying to draw your weapon and get it ready, you have to first deflect the attack successfully and then also succesfully "riposte" or counter-attack pretty much immediately... a crazy amount of good fortune has to be on your side I figure. Is there a risk in having a deadly weapon with you giving you false confidence, possibly leading to increased risk of being seriously injured? If you managed to first stagger the attacker, get them seriously off their balance and then effectively disable them by landing a stab with the weapon, that might be useful so you might have a better chance at running away. This also depends very much on your relative sizes, levels of strength and other relevant factors. I'm still not exactly seeing it, but it's an interesting question.

@@syyskuu How likely is it to encounter an unarmed mugger in a given situation? In most countries mugging by an unarmed assailant is the most common type: In that situation you the concept is that you break for some distance and visibly draw the weapon to use it to intimidate the attacker into backing off In Fidel's idea: we already lost - if an armed attacker has launched an attack you have little chance of unharmed escape, assuming that is their aim. In this case: Brake for distance again, draw and make it clear that they will lose as badly as you It's value is very limited as a weapon

Hi Skall, I usually find the “is this fantasy weapon effective” conversation about as boring as you, but I watched an old video of yours recently talking about center grip vs strap shields, and while I got to wondering about the Uruk-Hai shields featured in the Lord of the Rings films. 1 are they center grip or strap? (Maybe a dumb question I’m thinking strap but not sure) and 2, how effective not only as a shield but also as a weapon would they be?

I can say without a doubt that the Ka-Bar TDI Law Enforcement knife is much better and much more affordable than this one. I'd recommend going to T5 Custom Kydex for a custom sheath for it too, it's a great value. You can get both of those for a combined total of about $60 depending on if you get it from Amazon or from Ka-Bar.

I'll just stick with my PM2 if I want a self defense small knife. Much more expensive yes, but you get much superior steel, portability and concealment, and most importantly PM2s in general have very high resale value and usually retain about 90% and sometimes even 100% so long as there's no rust and you haven't ground the blade into something clearly miss shaped (again very hard given the steel) so you could very decently regain the money.

I’ve served in the german military for 6 years and their equipment was nothing short of astounding. Anyways, that was my little tidbit, take it as you will. Cheers, -Nightshade
