After three years of heavy use of this model we have a complete review, and we also take a look at the latest upgrades to this model! Notice in the video I refer to it as the BF cpmplex hilt sidesword, but that is their naming convention for the synthetic model, whereas this is the steel generation swept hilt sidesword. Link to the product below.

Hey Nick! Thank you so much for the review. :) It's really nice to constantly have feedback re: BlackFencer from you. Living in Portugal, they're the most convenient source for HEMA/historical fencing gear and it's nice to see that I can get something close to home that works as well as the Kvetuns and all such that most people use.

Blackfencer understands their stuff very well and is worlds prettier then Kvetun ^^

Nice, I've always liked Black Fencer and I have a ton of their synthetics. I wish they made cup hilt rapiers, I'm struggling to find one that can be shipped to the UK.

They have been working on a steel cup hilt, but they are super busy, I believe it is coming soon. Otherwise you could go with Kvetun, Krieger, Bellatore, and probably a few more I am forgetting. This reseller even has the Kvetun in stock, they are an excellent seller who will get it to you within about a week faitsdarmes.com/en/rapier/269-spanish-rapier-kvetun.html

@@AcademyofHistoricalFencing Thanks for the reccomendation. I was looking at Kvetun but didn't know what their stock was like atm. I was going to go for an Armour Class rapier but I might have to reconsider.

Kvetun don't keep stock, but that reseller in France has some. Armourclass Rapiers are good but they are short compared with that is generally in use for rapier today. They were the first HEMA type rapiers we ever had, close to 20 years ago. If you are happy with the short lengths then sure, but otherwise most HEMA rapiers today have 42-45" blades, more in line with what most of the sources people pravtice from.

The new pommel might be more practical and comfortable but damn, is that faceted acorn gorgeous!

Thanks Nick - great review. I have a Kventun complex side-sword, but it's a bit heavy and weight balance strongly towards the hilt. This looks a better option.

I like that model but it is indeed rather heavy, especially for it's relatively short size. This BF model, especially the latest one, is far lighter in the hilt and also a little longer too.

*Looks at blue and slightly swollen left index finger* Yes, the crossguard can indeed act as an anvil for the index finger. Especially if you're fencing left-handed with a right-handed sidesword :-/

Hey Nick, this review had me order one of those side swords for myself! Just wondering if you ended up doing a review on the Noblis Rapier? I've a few people in my club pretty interested in getting one.

Oh, that looks like a beautiful Sidesword! Unfortunately it's a pain to get BF stuff in Canada (there's a distributor, but their rapier/sidesword stuff seems to be sold out at the moment) but I'll have to keep an eye on it if I eventually get into sidesword.

Hi there! Do any of the swords from this company (either synthetic or steel) have the ability to be taken apart? I’ve been trying to find info on if they are or are not screw-tanged and I would be able to put my own blade on them. Great review, Thanks!!!
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing Жыл бұрын
All of the steel range are peened and cannot be taken apart without undoing that, except for the katana which is pinned together as their were traditionally. The synthetics are hammer fitted at the pommel and then pinned through at the guard, and so in theory you could take these apart, though I have never tried.

How do you like the hardness on the blade? Many black fencer steel blades are quite soft in my experience and get chewed up pretty quickly
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing Жыл бұрын
I discuss this in the video, it's not so much that BF are soft, it's that the have a preference for narrow edges. Some types of blades take a lot of damage with such edges, others do not. This sidesword for example has taken nothing severe, never needing to have maintenance done and still can be safely drawn across bare skin as shown in the video.

@@AcademyofHistoricalFencing apologies, didn't have much time today so I skipped through the video a bit. Everything that I did see was well put together though!

How did you tear the muscle? Just wondering if it is something fencers should be aware of when training alone. I know I lose form when I don't have a fencing partner.
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing

As far as I could tell it was nothing that could have been done differently. During sparring with some kind of sabre or similar I stopped a fast cut short in an extended guard and heard/felt a crunching noise. Sometimes you have to stop cuts like that and there was nothing wrong with my grip. I had been hitting it very hard with a massive amount of training and sparring. The week it happened I had full day sparring events on top of usual training and was doing all sidesword and sabre. Ultimately I think we can put this just down to being unlucky when you train hard and often, eventually something will give.
