Pull the piston up slowly. In the first pull when you get a bit of air push it back down in the water to push out the air, then pull back slowly and your chamber will be filled. It is easy when you do it correctly . I like this style brush because you can draw up water to fill it from any water source such as a cup and do not need running water to refill like with other styles. The fiber tip brush is for softening edges and removing pigment from small areas. When I use these I wear a cuff on my wrist from a sock to wipe the tip off when changing colors.

That was a pretty fair assessment of these waterbrushes. My problem with them is the limited amount of water they hold in the reservoir and the fact that you may end up using half of it just to clean the brush tips. In the end I invested in a Da Vinci Maestro travel brush for just less than 2x the cost of the waterbrushes set. The old saying "If you buy right, you only buy once" applies here in my opinion.

I absolutely love this brush. Unlike the pentel it has never clogged and I feel it holds a slightly better point. Also you can clean it very quickly by pushing down the piston.

A possible application for the fiber-tip brush is for drawings with water-color pencil or other water-soluble media. Kind of like a Tombow blender.

I use the fiber tip as a scrubber. It is not as rough on the paper as a scrubber brush, but it lifts pretty well. Also it is useful when you use water soluble pencils.

I have found that once the brush has been filled to capacity, if you screw back the bristle tip, and THEN push the piston back in, some of the water will stay in the tip of the brush, so you end up with more water capacity!

These brushes are really good if using watercolor pencils. The fibers are just stiff enough to work with the paint and it is much easier to work "on the fly" than it is with a cup of water at hand. If I can manage it, I usually have a cup of water with me anyway. I have started to use a silicone cupcake cup since I can fold it up and it snaps right back.

Thank you, Teoh, for another very thorough review! These brushes have some good qualities, but that 3 step water filling process is much too involved for me. I wonder if the fibre tip brush would be good for signing paintings? Using a brush to sign can be difficult for me. Thanks again! 😊👏💐

Teoh, have you tried the Caran Dache aquarelle plastic pallete? It has one smooth side and one rough side. The rough side really helps break down pigments on watercolor pencils, watercolor sticks and Neocolor II water soluble wax sticks so you don't overwork the paper.

@@teohyc It's really worth a shot! I think it's worth the price (smooth side for markers, rough size for pencils and sticks) .. if you want a taste of the rough side you can try one of these nylon vegetable cutting planks .. they might be to rough, but will give you an idea.

I think the water control of the caran d'ache is superior to other brands. I use them for color pencils, and most of the time I just want my brush to be damp, which works great with these brushes since the water doesn't keep flowing so much from reservoir to tip. The price however 😢

I'm not sure which copic tip you are comparing with the Caran D'Ache fiber tip, but if it's the "brush" tip on the Copic Sketch markers, they are nothing alike beyond superficial looks. The Caran D'Ache is a fully rigid tip, but the Copic Brush tip has sufficient flex at the end to allow some line variation. Other than scrubbing I never wind up using this brush.

Well it seems like I will still need a water cup anyway. The marker head type looks like it may be useful for lifting_scrubbing_drawing. I can't imagine doing a large full page wash with these , even in a small sketchbook. Outside , I use a tennis sweat band/ cut-off sock on my wrist and pull out - push in clean brushes. I change them like I would if using colour pencils. You blot the brushes on the inside of your wrist while brushes are on the other side . Cleaning these brushes looks a bit cumbersome. I think I 'll give them a miss. Thanks for the informative video Teoh. Cheers

17:59 If and when you have cleaning water cup/tray, nothing can prevent you to use that with the water brush, either. I see no any benefit in this regard to use regular brushes. Regular brushes may have other benefits, but definitely not washability in a water tray. Anyway, a brutally excellent video, because you have excellently demonstrated 3:00 how to fill this brush with water; it was finicky. As for 5:04 cup removal from the back, I always grab the piston part when pulling off the cap, this way its position remains stationary during the cap removal operation.

tbh, these look just needlessly overenginnered to me. "cooler looking" than the usual, squishy LDPE bodies, but i see no practical advantage. aside from th eproblem with seating the cap, those pistons rely on an oil film to work, that will vanish with use, making it sticky and hard to move.

tbh, these look like gimicky over-engineering to me. i cant see any major advantage over a simple, squeezable barrel, that would justify 10x the price of chinese sakura clones, using the exact same pattern for the buissness end.
@dannyarbre6280
@dannyarbre6280 3 жыл бұрын
i've tried both the clones and the pentel water brushes. the clones are in inferior quality both when it comes to the bristles, and how the tip handles the water: the clones sometimes will suck back in water, meaning that pigment can come inside the water tank. this has yet to occur with the pentel brush. - as for the caran d'ache brushes it can be a bit fiddly at first to fill the tank, but actually works out nicely with some exercise. the felt pen is excitingly different, at the moment i'm experimenting with different ways on how to use it. i agree with teoh that the brushes need some extra care when cleaning, including the felt pen model. a real convenience i have found is for smaller scale work on the go when you can't afford to handle a lot of water like a cup/tank, i e on public transport. i even use the brushes as tiny water tanks along with a travel brush.
