In this video I demonstrate how a hopper will fit on the E5SD single dosing grinder. Please understand while using a hopper is mechanically possible it nullifies the purpose of single dosing operation and zero retention concept associated with Ceado single dosing grinders. Thanks, Marc

@@edelweys I've owned this grinder for a few months now. After 2 weeks of use I opened it up to measure the retained grinds. I was shocked, it was literally dust, about .2 of a gram retained. I was also skeptical but if you use the RDT method you will get next to no retention. I don't have to purge anything the following day, if the grinder really retained a substantial amount of grinds your first shot in the morning would run fast and it doesn't. I only have to make minor adjustments every few days because the coffee slowly loses freshness but even then it's very minor adjustments every 4 or 5 days. Very impressed with this grinder and I've owned many! Hahaha

@@edelweys hmm that's odd, maybe too much static? I did notice when I didn't add 3 sprays of water it would retain about .3-.4 of a gram. Are you using RDT? Because that made all the difference for me. I'm curious because I'm really enjoying this grinder and the shots I'm getting from it. My other grinders would burn through beans like crazy, either through dialing in or morning purges.
@Thrilos30

@@edelweys that is so odd, I actually just opened my grinder today for the 2nd time since I bought it. I swept out the whole grinder and it had less than .2 of a gram. 7 grams of retained grinds is really excessive, my vtitan 64 at most would retain 4 grams. I use a large variety of beans from commercial Italian style roasts to single origin. I should have documented my cleaning to show you. The largest amount retained was near the shoot and the blade but even then it was only .1 and the other .1 was around the burr carrier and some coffee dust on the walls. I just don't see how your grinder could retain that much?? You would notice massive inconsistencies between shots and your morning shot would run super fast if you didn't run beans through to purge. How is your first shot after letting the grinder sit for a few hours or days?

@@edelweys not that this will make a massive difference but using the black plastic cup ceado provided really helps if you place it in the bellow, it'll create a good seal and you'll get a stronger push of air through the grinder.

I've been using the E5SD for a few weeks now and I'm really impressed. I've pulled at least 50 shots and I'm consistently getting 18 grams in and 18 grams out. Very rarely do I even get .1 of a gram of retention. After about 20 shots I opened the grinder up to check on internal retention and I was surprised by how little was actually left behind. My Brewista Smart Scale didn't register even .1 of a gram. The grinder is quiet, beautifully constructed and the accessories Ceado provides are top notch. I had a ECM V-Titan prior to this and although I loved the grind quality the retention was frustrating. I enjoy switching beans and trying different roast levels. This grinder allows me to do that without having to purge 4-5 grams each morning and between grind adjustments. The grind consistency is amazing and all my shots have been incredible. The demonstration Marc gives is spot on! I was a little skeptical at first because it does look like the E6P but I have to say all the modifications Ceado made really make a massive difference. I've also experienced next to no popcorning towards the end of the grind, it looks like the internal design won't allow for it.The proof is in the performance and I'm amazed at how well it delivers.

One note I did want to make, my results are based on using 3 sprays of water during the RDT process. I ran a couple tests without using it and found between .4 - .6 of a gram of retention. It appears that the static produced without it does cause a bit of retention so make sure to include RDT to your workflow.

I love the niche single dose but I've learned from many reviews that the flat burrs are what I really want for those chocolate caramel notes I like. Flavours from the niche i believe are fruitier, derived from the conical burr arrangement. i realise the ceado is a level up in price but probably worth saving up for.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hey jay, Thanks for the comment. Flat burrs are preferred by most for high-end espresso grinding. The Ceado grinders are a big level up. Some other things to consider comparing the Niche to Ceado... The Niche runs the full range of grind size from espresso to drip and beyond in about a 180 degree turn of the adjustment. It's really difficult to be precise when dialing in espresso packing all that range into a half turn! With the precision of the Ceado grind adjustment it's much easier to dial in grind size and get what you want out of an extraction. The Ceado is prosumer/commercial level build quality with commercial motor, precision machining and quality fasteners used in construction. The Ceado E5SD model has burrs treated to prevent corrosion so no problem using RDT. Marc

Hi Mark. Thanks for the review, I always appreciate how thorough your videos are! I’ve been looking to upgrade up from a Mazier Mini to a single doser grinder and I’m torn between the E37SD and this new E5SD. It’s for home use for approx 4 espressos a day paired with a profitec pro 800. I’d appreciate any thoughts... wondering if the 37sd is overkill and would I see much between the two given the usage amount.

Hi Mitch, Thanks for the comment and question. The bigger burrs in the E37SD produce a slightly higher grind quality but the 64mm burrs in the E5SD do an excellent job. A big difference is the Quick Set gear on the E37SD. It allows for more precision and if you ever grind for other brew methods the release on the gear makes macro grind size changes much easier. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi Marc, I am planning on getting an espresso machine and a grinder for home coffee experimentation along with usage in a weekend farmer's market kind of setup. For the machine I was thinking about a single group machine like La Spaziale S2 or Rancilio Classe 5 USB. For the grinder, I have been thinking of preferably Ceado E5SD but I have two concerns. If it is fine for prolonged usage in a semi-commercial setting and the other major query (also the main reason this grinder interests me) is if I can also use it to grind for manual brewing methods. My setup includes, Pour over, French press, Syphon, Aeropress and a moka pot. Could you please share your thoughts? Also, would you like to say anything about the shortlisted espresso machines. Hi Marc, if you use the bellows on a standard machine, I'm assuming given the hopper compatibility that the bellows and collar would fit e6p and even 37 range (depends on depth of that collar). Would it work, not as a proper SD, given lack of water protection. But as a way to reduce retention / cleaning and for those who want a hopper and timer most of the time. Little experiment for you!

Do you guys sell replacement parts for the e5sd? I could drop that internal ring in my current E5P and improve retention issues DRAMATICALLY. I took my e5p apart to clean it and noticed how the coffee was collecting in this perfect ring shape around the grind chamber. I was even considering 3d printing a ring to fill that space myself. Funny CEADO makes an entirely new model just to fill that empty space.

Hi Mark, thanks for great video ! I have a question on you. I bought new Ceado E5SD, swithing from Barratza sette 270 (there is clutch malfunction after 3 years of using). I have to say I am quite confused if the Ceado suits me. I am used to make single shots and doubles as well, I have to say using Sette tends to be a bit easier. First with the same type of coffee, same dose and brew time - the coffee from Ceado has to be much finer grinded than from Sette (is it due to conical burrs ?) - and dealing with coarser coffee is much easies (it is more fluffy, not making clumps). Second if we are talking about Ceado from coffee to coffee it is really near zero retention - but when I make the frist coffee of the day retention tends to be bigger. Am I doing something wrong ? Or should I wait until seasoning of burrs ? These are my hints from 2 days using....Maybe for home use it is easier to have conical burrs grinder.... Thanks for your comment. Jan
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jan, You are welcome and thanks for your feedback. In general, flat burrs produce a more consistent particle size and are preferred over conical for espresso grinding. It's possible the Sette has a wider range of particle sizes in the ground coffee. To the eye it may appear coarser but in reality there are more particles of a finer size in the mix and they're slowing down the extraction. Nailing the near zero retention requires the RDT spraying of beans prior to grinding. Assume you are doing that for your first coffee of the day. RDT helps control static in the grounds and reduce retention. Perhaps things are just a little drier with that first shot. Burr seasoning results in a coating of coffee oils on burrs and internal components which help reduce retention so you may see improvements as they season. I do not think you are doing anything wrong. Perhaps you can try a little extra spraying of beans prior to first grind of the day. Hope that helps! Marc

Mark, what is your recommendation between the e5p and the Baratza 270wi for home use? Also was wondering if the rocket apartamento has automatic preinfusion. I’m thinking of ordering one. Thanks mark!
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi P, Thanks for the question. Choosing between the E5P and the 270Wi depends on how you are likely to use it. Dollar for dollar the E5P is IMO the best value in a larger burr machine grade grinder. It's prosumer level appropriate for mid to high level home use and in lower volume commercial settings. Very solid build that will serve for many years. It's totally on demand/manual so if you are the type which weighs doses that adds another step. The Sette 270Wi is what I consider a high-end appliance grade product. It has a lot of plastic used in construction. But it's almost magical in weight based grinding, It's fast and a good deal louder than the E5P. If you dose by weight you will definitely appreciate not even having to think about it. If you use other brew methods you can quickly adjust grind size for those and easily get back to your espresso setting. Be aware the Sette does produce more fines at coarser grind settings. That can be an issue for some and no big deal for others. The E5P is an espresso specialist. Not a grinder I'd recommend for multi-purpose grinding. While the Sette is appliance grade there is some peace of mind with Baratza's fixed price repair program. Hope that helps on the grinders. The Appartamento has standard E61 pre-infusion which drops some water onto the coffee prior to reaching full brew pressure. Marc

Mark, did you by chance get to measure retention inside the E5SD. Start with fully clean grinder, grind a few doses to fill any internal passages, such as space between chute and burrs. Then grind pump the bellows, dissembled and clean what is left behind, this to me is true retention. What you show in the video its dosage consistency, which might include some exchange of old grinds in the passage with new grinds. I'm particularly interested since the smaller burrs in the E5SD mean there is more space between the chute and the burrs if you compare to the larger 83 mm burrs in the E37. That gap between burr and exit chute will be 9.5 mm larger in the E5SD than in the E37SD. If the chute passage design is not any different in the E5SD than in the E5P, to me it seems like Ceado is charging $670 for a bellows, burr coating,aluminium spacer, dosing funnel, stainless cup and spray bottle. That seems like a lot of money to charge for those items, if indeed the chute design is the same as the E5P.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi MG, Thanks for the questions and comments! In the video when I opened the E5SD to show that extra ring which decreases the volume of the grinding chamber there was no evidence of any internal retention beyond the tiny amount accumulated around the heads of the burr mounting screws. I had ground in excess of 20 doses prior to opening. In past videos I have done what you mentioned - disassemble, clean out any remaining grinds and weigh. With the E5SD there was nothing. The chamber was clear. I'm not quite sure where you are coming up with a 9.5mm difference. The E5SD and E37SD grinding chambers are not the same size. I agree there is a large price difference between the P and SD models. Ceado sets pricing. Beyond the single dosing tools and grinding chamber spacer there are differences in electronics as well. The P has a very simple on/off pulse switch while the SD has timing to 30 seconds, power on indication with the illuminated logo, flash after 30 seconds with ability to extend cycle. I have no idea how Ceado arrives at pricing but can guess the SD is a lower sales volume product so new custom parts development/production cost are spread over fewer units. Marc
@SpeedNessRx7
@SpeedNessRx7 4 жыл бұрын
@@Wholelattelovepage Thanks for the detailed response as always Mark. Just to clarify the 9.5 mm comes from the difference in burr size between the two. (83-64)/2 = 9.5 mm should be the radial distance difference from burr outer diameter to chute. Makes sense about the lower volume possibly driving the price higher too. Thanks again!

Hey Mark, great comparison of the Ceado entry level range! I’m a very happy owner of the E5SD since about half a year. I have two questions though: 1. How do I take the top burr off for the E5SD? I noticed that the E6P has a little screw in the back that you can unscrew to take the adjustment ring and top burr off. For the E5SD that screw is missing. In your video it look like you were able to take the top off by just turning the dial all the way to coarse. This doesn’t work for me. Any ideas how to get to the inside in order to clean it out? 2. I saw you also have a video where you put 64mm SSP burrs into a ceado grinder. Mine is still within warranty (bought here in Germany it’s only 2 years btw so cool stuff you guys give 3 years), but I would like to put in SSP burrs once the warranty runs out. Do the red speed burrs also fit into the E5SD (because I’ve read in a forum they don’t) and is there anything that would contraindicate that you can install 64mm SSP burrs? You would be of great help with this as there are unfortunately very few videos on KZfaq on the E5SD and my retailer wasn’t of help so far. Thanks, Tim

you have to unscrew the dial off flip it and upside down put the screws back in. Sounds weird but if you do that you'll know what i mean. You'll then be able to use the dial to unscrew the brass burr adjustment thread to release the top burr. If you just use your hands on the brass thread you'll cut your hands like i did since the thread is very sharp.

Hi Mark, I'm very interested in the E5SD but a quick question regarding the back-lit screen. I have a Ceado grinder with a touch screen and I noticed specks of light shine through in certain parts, it looks like a manufacturing issue. It doesn't hinder the performance but is a bit disappointing considering the cost of the grinder. I noticed the same issue with the E5SD in the video. Have you noticed this on multiple units? Marc, I recently bought a Baratza sette 270 Wi and I have been using it for a day or so and I have noticed the retention is about 1.5 gram and isn’t it supposed to be about .5? Is this something that resolves over time or what are your thoughts?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi LK, First, congrats on your new 270 Wi. It's an excellent grinder. Retention depends on how you measure it. If your grinding all the beans out and have 1.5g left that would be very unusual. When I measure retention it's clean the grinder out. Load a known weight into the hopper and grind until nothing more comes out. Weight the output and subtract from the input. @Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank, Thanks for the request. Thing is there's essentially nothing to the maintenance. Very simple to get inside to clean if desired. Just keep turning to a coarser setting and the adjustment collar removes exposing the burr chamber. Be sure adjustment collar threads are very clean prior to putting things back together. When placing on adjustment collar spin counter clockwise first until you hear or feel threads drop into place before turning clockwise to engage. That prevents cross-threading. If you feel any resistance when turning clockwise stop, turn back out and retry. No real upgrades to the E5SD other than mounting the hopper. By the way Ceado not exactly happy with me for showing that in the video! Marc

I just bought the new E6P and I have some problems with the grindind. I read all over internet but did not answer to my problem. I found my 0 (where the blade are in contact) My grinding is too coarser and when I try to put it finer the blade is spining in the air and almost no coffee get out of the ceado. I try many times to clean and start over again. Everytime there is a lot of coffee powder stuck inside. My beans are nice little roasted not oily. The first time I open the grinder, I was surprise how greasy the mecanisum was. Not by the beans. Is that why the coffee stucks inside? I was expecting a lot with this grinder but after passing one pound of good coffee by trying to set up it, I am very desapointed. Every time and I clean it up and I start grinding there is around 7 gr retention. More over, my botomless portafiler is to thin to hold on the grinder and it fall. Any feedback please
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi ML, Let me try and help... Bottomless PF: Sounds like you need to adjust the portafilter hook. There's a screw below the PF support fork. Loosen that, adjust to your PF height and tighten. Internal lubrication: There is a lubricant applied to threads of the grind size adjustment mechanism during manufacture. If you open the grinder and it's excessive you can remove with a cloth etc. Retention: Like other similar grinders the E6P is not considered an extra low retention grinder. 7g is more than usual - see next comment. Static control flap: Think this may be the source of your issues. Remove the grind delivery chute assembly. It's held on by 4 screws. 2 up top and 2 adjacent to the delivery chute. Once off you will see a small flexible metal flap held in place by a single screw. Remove the flap to check for any compressed coffee blocking the chute. This area can get clogged with coffee if you happened to be grinding very fine in combination with the flap not being adjusted properly and not allowing coffee to flow out of the grinding chamber. Clear any compacted coffee from the are behind the flap. Re-attach the flap and give it a slight bend to allow coffee to flow more freely out of the grinding chamber. Clearing compacted coffee and giving the flap more of a bend out should take care of your problem. Marc

Not sure if this has been asked already or not, but what is the difference between the E6P and the E37J? I know they look a bit different but I was wondering if they are different in functionality? It looks like most of the parts are similar. Thanks!

Hey ZR, Thanks for the question. Not much difference in functionality. Both have 2 timed presets and manual dosing, 64mm burrs and 300 watt motors. While both are considered espresso specialist grinders the E37J is a bit more specialized to espresso. The E37J lever for grind size adjustment stays focused in a narrow range while the adjustment collar of the E6P rotates continuously so you can get out to grind sizes for other brew methods more easily. The E37J is a "beefier" build. It's heavier with no plastic used in construction. Very little plastic on the E6P but there is a bit on the display/control housing and the cover of the grind adjustment ring. Marc

Hello! Question for. you! My husband and I recently purchased a Ceado E6P to pair with our Linea Mini. The grinder came preset on grind setting 1 (the range is from 0-8). Our shots still seem to be coming out really fast and we're concerned there isn't much left on the grinder for size adjustment. Is it typical that we're always going to be between 0 and 1 on the grinder?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
I Hope thanks for the question. First, 0 on the ring might not be the finest setting. Could be but maybe not. You can test by running the grinder with no beans in and then adjusting finer until you hear the burrs touch and then quickly back off to coarser until sound stops. That’s your finest grind setting. Don’t worry about the burrs briefly touching. Non cutting outer edge touches first so no harm. If you’re grinding at 1 setting now and went to .5 your grind would likely be fine enough to choke your machine - no flow from PF spouts. Burrs do age but not even close to the point where you’d run out of adjustment to finer. Everything will be “fine”! Marc

Why is the E5SD almost 650 bucks more in price than the E5Pro? In my understanding the difference is the rubber with the extra ring on top and the collector ring for the portafilter to catch the grind because the internal flap has been removed. I also tried to find the price for the rubber and stuff in the net, but could not find it. That makes me sad.

Hi Dirk, Thanks for the question. It does seem like quite the jump! So one really big reason is the unit volumes for each model. Ceado had to create a number of unique parts with lower sales volume so per unit development and production costs are higher. Beyond the parts you mention there are specialized burrs to better deal with moisture used in RDT to get the most out of the SD model. Marc

I assume the single dose E5SP can do course grinds for regular brews? I have family members that love their "simple" coffee - direct pour or a French press. Its just their style and they love it. For those kinds of coffee, I would prefer to stick the hopper on and grind away, then switch back. The main reason I prefer single dose, is the ability to use certain beans for Espresso and something darker for Cappuccino or milk-based while ensuring the beans stay fresh in proper storage. Hoppers just shouldn't be used to store beans IMHO. If your not grinding a hopper full for immediate use, why use a hopper? Anyway, I see a use for the hopper on the single dose machine and having the single dose with the hopper as an option would be my preference.

Hi TW, Thanks for sharing your opinion. The E5 can grind coarse for other brew methods. Do understand that it's an espresso specialist and flat burr grinders tend to produce more fines at coarser grind settings. For most that's not an issue but can lead to muddier cups of press coffee. But that depends on what one is comparing against. I have spoken with Ceado and they are dead set against putting a hopper on the E5SD. In their mind the SD is a single doser and as you say hoppers should not be used to store beans. Marc

@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi YL, Thanks for the question. If in your budget the Ceado E5SD is a good choice for multi-purpose grinding. As a single dosing grinder a number of benefits: 1. Extremely low retention so switching beans types is easy with no cross contamination. 2. Easy to make large grind size changes as no beans left between the burrs and very large adjustment collar for good precision. 3. Excellent Ceado build quality. It's a step up from Eureka grinders. Some do find it easier to use 2 dedicated grinders. Especially if you'll be leaving beans in the hopper. For a brew grinder at prosumer grade the Eureka Brew Pro (55mm) burr is very nice: www.wholelattelove.com/products/eureka-mignon-brew-pro-coffee-grinder-in-white You could pair that with a Eureka Mignon Magnifico that's an espresso specialist: www.wholelattelove.com/products/eureka-mignon-magnifico-coffee-grinder-in-ferrari-red Both Eureka grinders area available in a variety of colors and have a nearly identical form so would look nice nxt to each other. Another option for a multi-purpose grinder is the Eureka Mignon Perfetto: www.wholelattelove.com/products/eureka-mignon-perfetto-16cr-grinder-in-matte-black the Perfetto shrinks the entire range of grind size adjustment to one 360 degree turn of a knob. With that it's more difficult to be extremely precise dialing in espresso grind size but it's doable. While I consider the Eureka grinders to be prosumer grade the Ceado grinders are a step above in build quality. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi Marc, first things first: outstandig fast reply time on such a big Channel. Thank u! I was asking because my Mignon has a pretty Messed Up dial and you cant Tell how often you turned it... so on these boys everything seems nicely calibrated. Then i guess its a pretty good catch for those who Love drinking both and want to rely on a established Brand whith local dealers, rather than e.g. On a Niche Zero. All the best from Germany and excuse my Englisch ;)

how do you calibrate these grinders?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi CM, Sorry for the delayed response - I've been offline for a week. Calibrating is straightforward. With all beans out and motor running continue adjusting to a finer setting until you hear the burrs just touch. You'll know it when that happens. No worries about the burrs touching the outer flat edges of the burrs are higher than the cutting edges so cutting edges do not touch. When you hear the noise back off until that sound stops and that's the "zero" grind setting. Marc

Hello Marc! One last question for you. I know it varies substantially depending on the roast of your beans....however, on average what is your typical grind setting range for these grinders? We have had our E6P for 3 weeks now. The first bag of espresso was a light roast and we were just under zero - just off of burs touching. We picked up a different brand medium roast espresso and we are at .25. We expected more of a range on the machine. Does this sound typical?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Hope, Thanks for your question. Much depends on the beans, dose weight and other variables. I use the E6P quite often with a bunch of different roast levels and bean ages. Most all grinding is within a .75 range. Do keep in mind the numbers on the scale are reference. It's rare that zero on the scale of a grinder represents burrs touching. Compared to other grinders Ceado adjustment precision is fairly high. The threads of the adjustment collar are very fine. It's typical for lighter (especially fresh from) roast coffees initially grind finer and as they age dial in coarser. To directly answer your question yes your experience is typical. Marc

I would be able to prepare my caffe by bluetooth and just go to the machine to pick it up .. but without the cup feeder I need to wait 1-2 min in front of the machine until it finished .. which means the bluetooth doesn't add a real value to the machine if I should be in front of it since I put the cup until it finish . How do we take off the top burr on a e5sd?
@Wholelattelovepage

Hi BBA, Thanks for the question. It's very easy! Just continue turning the grind size adjustment collar to a coarser setting and it comes off. You may need to loosen a Phillips head set screw on the side of the grinding collar to allow for continuous rotation. Marc

Is this really the best Ceado can do? For the average home user, compared to the Niche Zero the Ceado E5SD just doesn't seem worth it. Noticed how it says "affordable" on your website, that was a nice laugh.

Hi d, Thanks for the comment. The E5SD affordability is in comparison to Ceado's full commercial E37SD w/83mm flat titanium burrs. I've searched in vain for duty cycle rating and motor wattage for the Niche and have been unable to find any information. For average home user worth/value IMO depends on perspective. Warranty on Ceado grinders is 3 years compared to 1 year for Niche. The E5SD is perfectly capable and reliable in light to medium commercial use. Granted that may not be a concern for light home use but it says a lot about build quality and long term expectations. While the Niche is stepless I'm always a bit suspect of precision in espresso grind ranges in grinders which go from espresso fine setting to medium drip grind with such a short turn of the grind adjustment. Marc

@@Wholelattelovepage Still the $1300+ price tag makes no sense what so ever considering the E5SD is an E5P with a bellows instead of a hopper. I not its not yous guys at WLL over pricing it cause I checked Ceado's web site and they are doing the same rip off in Europe. Please relate the message to Ceado and tell them that this is not cool.

Hi Marc, looking forward to Hobby review. Could you pair that review with the bundle BB005 grinder. It looks to be one of the cheaper non Asian models adding the Italian glamour. Both machines aesthetically look good together. But of course if the grinder is not worthy of the Hobby Ceado 5 or 6 might be the way to go. On those are they only all black now or SS version available also. Thanks as always.

The E5SD is a leap in quality above the Niche grinder which borders on appliance grade construction. The E5SD is a true machine with much better sound. No real limit in amount of beans ground in the E5SD. It continuously grinds so you can continuously feed with beans. Marc
