Is this a good telescope for $139? What do I need to get if I live in suburbia (ambient light from the city) and want to see infrared signatures in space through a telescope?

Hi dave! i know you might not be able to answer this in time, but i have to make a decision on whether to buy this telescope or not before midnight because its on clearance. Would you recommend it as a beginner telescope? i really like it and what ive heard of it
@simonhardwick1168
@simonhardwick1168 3 жыл бұрын
I own one of these . It's okay for getting into astronomy or for one of those presents for the kids where no one knows any better and after a few viewings it will be put at the back of a closet somewhere and forgotten. Tripod stand is flimsy, joints become loose after a few times use and become wobbly, mirror is spherical and not parabolic so viewing more distant planets than the moon appears blurry and not crisp. It can be improved a little through collimation but still not perfect. I have had mine less than a year and already looking to upgrade. Save the pennies and get something else and do better research than I did. Thank me later.

@@antagonistalion sorry did not see your reply. I went for a skywatcher skyliner 200p flextube on a Dobson goto mount. It can be purchased without goto as well and for a little more than the celestron is far superior.

Have you upgraded since writing this comment? I'm looking to get my first telescope but a lot of people are saying not to get this one. Would love any suggestions. Don't want to be disappointed
@simonhardwick1168
@simonhardwick1168 Жыл бұрын
@@kimberlyallan1671 hi . Yes I did upgrade. For beginners and ease of use a Dobsonian telescope is highly recommended. The size is up to your budget. I purchased a skywatcher 250p flex tube in the end and also a 2x Barlow and 6mm and 9mm goldline eyepiece for planetary viewing. The 250p is a 10" scope so quite large so very recently I bought a skywatcher heritage 150p virtuoso (goto) flex tube which is highly portable and also offers excellent views of planets and nebula. The 150p heritage is also available on a non goto mount which makes it very affordable. The 150p is a 6" so still offers excellent views.

Dave…omg you are a lifesaver 🙌🏾 thank you so much. Was my sons 6th birthday yesterday and my little boy is really into his planets. Since the age of 1 or under he’s been obsessed with the moon and would say goodnight to it every night before bed. He just turned 6 and over the years he’s self taught himself about the solar system and knows so much about it that I don’t even know lol. For this reason I decided to gift him this exact telescope for his 6th birthday. And thanks to you I’ve been able to assemble it. Your the only person that went in depth and explained, so thank you for that. My only issue is I don’t know how to use it at all lol do I just look into the sky and play around with it. I have no clue and although my boy know his planets and everything about them he’s never used a telescope to know. I hope you would upload more on this so I can learn from you and help my son. He really wants to be an astronaut when he grows up.

This is a descent beginners scope I have one, and Like it a Lot. It can be upgraded substantially from out of the box stock, as the eyepieces that come with it in the box are cheap Low quality. This is where they kept the price down. Getting a couple High quality eye pieces will Greatly increase the optical quality. One of the Celestron X-Cel LX Series Eyepieces in a - 1.25-Inch eyepiece will greatly enhance this scope. They are about $100.00 each.

Just bought one and yes it’s not covered. Release the two thumb screws on the front of the motor unit and the entire plastic front comes off. Battery slots into a gap beneath the cover. Connect up, make sure the wires don’t get trapped and screw the cover back on. :)

I like this on much better then the 127eq. The tripod and mount are much nicer. A true Newtonian?

I can't really get used to mine,just like something isn't set quite right, dunno what it is? If I got burgled n they took my scopes n I could only replace one,I'd choose my old one the Astromaster 70,that one I can point it and it's on it straightaway, but I think I've seen too many vids slating this 130 scope,back of my mind I've been put off kinda 🥺Did see the moon though the other night n it looked wicked 😁

Hello friend, What Barlow lenses do you recommend for this telescope to be able to observe the planets if I have 20mm, 15mm, 10mm and 9mm eyepieces? Excellent video 👍
@reviewsbydave8417
@reviewsbydave8417 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Antony, Barlow lenses are clever and convenient however quality is key here and with quality comes cost. I'd say don't go too high with magnification as 3x is really around the limit of this telescope size, also ensure the Barlow has good reviews and is a high quality one otherwise it will be difficult to focus well.

I've had a fascination with the universe ever since I was in the 3rd grade when I was given a book on the planets. I bought a Celestron C4.5 on my 13th birthday back in 1989 for $600 which I saved up for years. With it I was able to see the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter and the craters of the moon. I've used it throughout the years and just last night viewed the great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. I am now saving again as it is my dream to own a telescope like this!

The telescope you have is worlds better than the astromaster 130. You have a Japanese made vixen scope and mount. And the jump from 114 to 130 isn't much. If you want to upgrade get at least a 6"

@@k.h.1587 thanks for that info!... had no idea it was Japanese made and very surprising it would be better than the 130.

@@Chrisaaad 130mm is definitely more aperture than 114, but not really the best upgrade path from a 114. Generally 2 size jumps or more are recomended. If your scope says made in Japan with a v in a circle, and the mount has wood legs, then it is what I am talking about. If it actually cost as much as you said it did it probably is. As far as the astromaster goes, when they first came out they were using synta (Chinese supplier and now owners of celestron) 130mm f5 parabolic optics which are pretty decent. Same as Orion spaceprobe 130ST and celestron nexstar 130GT and 130SLT, and even the higher priced vixen r130SF which was not actually made by vixen like your celestron likely was (circle V is vixens Japanese trademark), Synta makes telescopes for many brands even Meade and most of Orions line, which in the same era as your scope, they were vixen as well. Someone told me that more recent astromasters now use spherical mirrors would be horrible at f5, though they do work in the long f8 114 s. But this person thinks he knows ALOT more than he actually does so I have not confirmed that to actually be the case. Now if your 114 has a short tube and a little lens built into the focuser tube, then that is a different animal and any parabolic 130f5 would blow it out of the water. I am pretty sure the c4.5 came on a vixen Polaris mount which is much more stable than an astromaster eq2 which is a whole size smaller and much less quality than a vixen Polaris, which is actually more like the omni CG4 mount but with wood legs. The super Polaris is cg5 size with the later great Polaris version being what the cg5 mounts are a Chinese copy of. You might even just consider getting a 6" tube and mount it to your existing mount. For $199 you can get a GSO 6" f5 or f6 that comes with rings, dovetail and finder scope, and usually an extension tube for visual use. It also has a 2" focuser. Opt has them branded as TPO and other dealers sell them under different names as well. If you have the mount I am thinking of, it would be the equivalent of having an omni 150xlt setup if you went with the f5 version. The f6 is a little easier to deal with optically, less critical in collimation and easier on eyepiece edge performance as well, but the longer tube is a little less stable on smaller mounts. At the most you will need to get new bolts at the hardware store if the threading is incompatible between your mount and the GSO rings, but if memory serves, GSO uses the same 6mm that yours probably uses rather than the 1/4-20 that synta uses. I always had to go to the hardware store whenever I got a GSO tube for that reason. You may need additional counterweight as well. And your mount should be compatible with Orion astroview/skyview pro weights. The dovetail that comes with the tube you won't need but will want to hold onto in case you get another mount, or decide to add a dovetail saddle to yours.
