Being skeptical of wireless lapel mics (they are noisy and don't sound good), this #Comica wireless system has changed my mind, so much so that I might be ditching my shotgun mic for my KZfaq videos. Links and more in the description. ▼

I'm on 5 years (?) now? 60,000, so, we'll see - patience seems to be the watchword. If I can post process this Comica wireless system (easily) and get it sounding the way I want it, I'm done with the NTG-3 shotgun for my KZfaq videos. :)

Good review as always. Back in the middle of December Tom Antos compared the Saramonic UwMIC9 ($400) with the Comica CVM-WM300 ($480). The two systems are almost identical in most regards. The main difference is the Saramonic uses AA batteries while the Comica has built-in rechargeable batteries. Below is the comment I left on Tom's review, which outlines how I feel about these two excellent systems. *THE XLR CABLE IS MONO* The fact is that the 3-pin XLR cable is a mono connection. That means that both channels will be mixed into one audio channel which is not what would be required by a production using a professional camera. They would need to split the output from the receiver to two separate 3-pin XLR connections, letting each mic be recorded on a separate audio channel in the camera or the mixing board. (Such a cable is available.) This is also true if you are connecting using phone plugs, if you are plugging into a recorder that has separate connectors for each mono channel. *CARRYING CASES* It seems like nobody supplies a useful carrying case with their products. I bought a Zoom H6 which came with such a case. The fit is so tight I can't even fit the additional Zoom attachments I bought at the same time. In my opinion, same goes for the Comica case. When you pack the two body packs and the receiver up, as soon as you get home, you're going to have to pull them back out and plug them in to recharge. Wouldn't it have been nice if they had left room at least for the charging cables to be plugged in while they where still in the case? Better that than that would have been to leave room in the case for a single 3-port charger that could be plugged into the three devices and a single mains cord to plug into the wall? Well, in my experience, nobody does that. But I wouldn't pay extra for a case that isn't all that useful to me. *AA BATTERIES OVER BUILT-IN RECHARGEABLE* Built-in rechargeable batteries just don't have a long enough life for me. I don't just mean how long they last between charges but how long the batteries continue to take a charge before the whole device becomes worthless. It might be different if the rechargeable battery is a customer replaceable item. As far as operating time with one charge, my Sennheiser wirelesses all use AAs as does my Zoom H6. What I like about this is, at the end of the day, I pack up and go home. I put my gear away and don't have to pull it all back out again and plug it in for recharging. That is, except for the camera batteries. Much easier, at least for me. Oh and I can always use rechargeable AAs if I every one to go the rechargeable route. The micro-B USB connectors are also difficult to plug in and are prone to getting bent and can easily became unusable. If the socket gets ruined, the whole device is now useless. *CONCLUSION* So I guess I'd be more favorably disposed to the Saramonic system. Thanks for the review.

An excellent review, thank you for sharing. I'll stick with the Zoom H1, however, with my cobbled-together dirt-cheap Lavalier stereo mics, achieving similar quality sound at a saving of $300. I thought the reception of your off-camera narration (12mins) was memorable. Gave me the best laugh of 2018 so far. Marred only by the fear you might take a leak whilst off-camera. Bathrooms are seldom acoustically awesome :-)

I think everything up to 9:19 is recorded on the phone's internal mic. It's not using those radios at all. There would be much more difference when your mouth is closer to / facing the mics. Also, there's no handling noise at 8:34. Notice 8:56 when you lean toward the iPhone, mouth facing the phone, suddenly the levels increase, because it's recording using the iPhone's built in mic.
@BasicFilmmaker
@BasicFilmmaker 4 жыл бұрын
Well, not really. You'll notice I was waving the phone around prior to the phone tests. Was recorded to a Zoom H6 except for the phone parts, and you can hear the difference at 9:24. Thanks.

Are you sure the smartphone thing works (8th minute)? Doesn't make any noise when you touch the mic (8:33) and it seem to be clearer when you get closer to the phone at 8:57...
@BasicFilmmaker
@BasicFilmmaker 4 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure. That's when my mouth moves towards the mic, not closer to the phone. If it wasn't working, when I moved to the left mic, it would get softer if it were recording on the phone. As far as mic handling, it could have been that I cut that out to save ears. 2 years ago, don't remember. In 2020, although it costs more, I would go with new tech, the Deity Connect here: amzn.to/2NupgOv Thanks!

Hi there, I recently purchased a CCVM-WM300 and I'm having trouble with the group B transmitter. The transmitter seem to work, when I say something to the mic the audio bar shows that it's receiving sound. But for some reason the sound isn't transmitted to my camera. My group A transmitter seem to work OK. But I don't know why the other one isn't working. I have to film an interview on Tuesday so I'm hoping to figure it out before then.. thank you in advance!

I didn't hear any handling noise on the lapel mics when connected to the iPhone. When you leaned closer to the iPhone I could hear the audio increase. I would agree the iPhone was using it's internal speaker. You could tap on the lapel mics to see if they are picking it up. I've had this issue with other external mics connected to the iPhone. The iPhone audio recorder is sometimes finicky on which mic it wants to use.

We bougt a set but encountered almost instantly a problem with the input bus of the receiver (bad contact). We also would like to make you aware of the fact the connection cable (minijack - XLR) is way to fragile. Comica is not willing to deliver a professional after sale service concerning the bad contact problem. We would strongly advice not to buy the comica set.

@HeadBangerExtreme
@HeadBangerExtreme Жыл бұрын
@@BasicFilmmaker It’s less Comica’s fault and more I don’t know the most optimal way to balance two people on a dual lav system besides using the settings on their receiver. What I ended up doing was record in Stereo so I could kind of have two seperate tracks for each person so I can adjust in post. HOWEVER, the biggest culprit was the fact that the mics they give you are entirely different. You can test them (maybe it was just mine). One sounds way different than the other, I ended up having to spend money on buying extra lavs.

I can dig it. Two questions please. Is there anyway to disable control buttons on transmitter? 1.My "actor" put the transmitter in his pocket and there is a better than average chance buttons will be pushed when the hands go in and out etc. 2. Is the output of the receiver split into two separate channels left and right or are they combined into a single stereo output with both microphone on both channels? Thanks for your review.

1. The buttons won't get pressed in a pocket. You really have to PRESS them. 2. Only one channel, not two, though I am looking into possible using a stereo to mono plitter and seeing if that works.

@BasicFilmmaker
@BasicFilmmaker 5 жыл бұрын
Tough call. The biggest thing to watch out for is that these wireless systems can pick up interference and drop, depending on the quality of the system. If I was recording like that I'd do both to be sure. If I only had one option, I would use hard-wired mic, but you ned to test, test, test. If you are trying to record it all into the camera, that's one thing. If you don't mid syncing sound in post, the cheapest is something like two Zoom H1ns and lapel mics on each person. I'd really have to know the details like how far the you and the person will be sitting away from each other, etc.
@RealJustinZiegler
@RealJustinZiegler 5 жыл бұрын
Basic Filmmaker thanks. I don’t want to have to sync audio in post. I already procrastinate making and editing as it is. I don’t want another reason. I’ll be sitting a few feet away from the interviewee on a 3 seater couch. We use my iPhonex (which I shoot with) a few feet away so that both of us are captured in the frame.

Sounds like something changed here, and if they aren't willing to support you, I agree, they are totally off my list not only for this product, but any for that matter. Thanks for the report.

Hi; I just bought the set CVM-WM300. I have a problem with the WM300-TX - I charged the battery and when I went to use it for the first time, I turn it on, the screen shows the "Comica" logo for a couple of seconds and then it turns off (this has jeopardised a film shooting which cause me some problems). When I got home I put it to charge again, but it does not work - even when connected to the plug, it does not turn on, it shows the logo and goes back off. I googled the problem but I cannot find any answer to this, This was a quite expensive piece of equipment and I wonder if you offer any solution to what I have described. I tried to google any solution or people with a similar problem but I haven't had any success.

I would absolutely contact Comica like right now, using their website, social media, wherever you can. The unit should not work like this ever.

Basic Filmmaker I sent them an email and a Facebook message. I hope the rumors I read about customer support aren’t true and they can help :) thank you for your time. By the way, it was thanks to your video that I went Comica’s way. I am happy with the other working transmitter :)

Have they updated the problem with the battery indicator? Would you happen to know or have you had the same problem like WM200A shows half battery life with fresh and rechargeable batteries so I ended up returning the item back? Please reply if possible thx! :)

If you replaced your Rode NTG-3 with this would you still go through your sound recorder or connect it directly to your camera?
@BasicFilmmaker

Hey Kelly. I just hate the noisy camera electronics. Unless I was using a camcorder with proper audio electronics, I still go through a separate audio recorder as DSLR electronics suck. I have a zoom H6 (any of the zoom recorders will do), andalways record to that.

Yeah, I heard that most cameras are pretty bad, especially Canon, which is what I use.

I had an interesting conversation with one if my clients today. We're getting ready to shoot an interview video next week and I told him about the Sony lavalier mic setup that I was going to use. He said he definitely doesn't want to be connected to wires, which means I need a wireless option. Having spent some time with these mics, do you still recommend this model or is there something else I should look at? Thanks!
@BasicFilmmaker
@BasicFilmmaker 6 жыл бұрын
I like these. I might go with the Rode wireless as it's cheaper if you don't need two. In fact, you could simply get a Zoom H1 (cheap but good) and a lapel and just stick the Zoom on the talent, almost same as the transmitter.
@idealynx
@idealynx 6 жыл бұрын
The Zoom H1 is a great suggestion. Which mic would you pair that with? Regarding Comica, when I researched that mic a little further something just bothered me about it. The amazon reviews are too good to be true and www.fakespot.com/ seems to confirms that. Plus, there is no US based support. One wireless setup I really like is from Saramonic. Plus, they have really good U.S. support from Movo, which I'm assuming is its U.S. distributor.

Do you ever think about selling all the equipment you’re sent or doing giveaways?
@BasicFilmmaker
@BasicFilmmaker 6 жыл бұрын
I have, but, that involves shipping, pricing, promoting, what about non-US - major, major hassle I do not have the time for. If someone has a couple Gs to spare (and another couple hundred for the shipping), I might just out it all in one big box, but most unlikely.

Perhaps donating to a local charity or high school AV department(do they still have these?) of your choice. A nice tax break maybe depending on how the new law shakes out :grin:.

From a ham radio operator and experienced electronics guy. The product may be good but the testing was questionable. Really, placing a phone near it to test RF interference? If the phone was not in a call or downloading/uploading over mobile data. It's not going to transmit very often, if ever during that time. WOW! Also if the "antenna was shielded" the dang thing would not work! That's the point of an antenna. To radiate or receive radiation. The receiver has to reject unwanted radiation. Felt like a promotion and not a review, IMHO.
