I went into a Guitar Center many many years ago with the intent of buying any classical guitar that I wanted. I tried them all without looking at the price tags and this is the one that I ultimately ended up with. It was $280 used. I still play it all the time and would highly recommend it to anybody wanting a bare-bones and really nice sounding classical.

I've owned this guitar for a few months now and I've used the D'addario normal tension strings on it and they were like playing rubber bands. I'd like to recommend Savarez high tension classics. They really bring the sound out on this guitar. They are pricey but just give them a shot if you're a seasoned player. Cheers.

I owned a Cordoba C5 as well as my Jose Ramirez A1 and I still played my Cordoba just as much as my Ramirez. These are amazing guitars for the price range. Paid around $380 from Guitar Center in Portland, Or. I used it at Recitals, Concerts and coffee shops. It actually produced more volume than my Ramirez surprisingly... All in all, this is a beautiful piece and definitely would recommend it to start with.

Thanks for the helpful review! I considered buying online but decided to go to a local Guitar Center to try this and other models in person. I'm glad I did. I tried the Cordoba C5 and C7 as well as the Kremona F65C and the Alhambra 1-OP. (Unfortunately they didn't have a comparable Yamaha to try.) To me, the Cordobas sounded much fuller and richer. The Kremona and the Alhambra sounded dull in comparison. I ended up getting the C7 as the C5 was a pretty hard-used floor model, but the sound between the C5 and C7 was very close. The C7 looks prettier, but the C5 sounded very nice to me. As far as bridge issues, they have a three year warranty, so I'll go with the best sound. Surprisingly, Guitar Center was able to beat Amazon's price by 15%. Very happy with my guitar so far.

I agree that is good. I would go as far to say look no further. I started finger style playing a few years back, with years of self teaching behind me I didn't know witch guitar I would use. I already had a steel string. So I got the c 5. I'm a big guy with big hands, the nylon makes things easier, I cheet and use the ball end strings. I'm also play with the flesh with the fingers, and yes it can be done. And the Cordoba sounds great this way. But it takes doing practice almost every day and time. Oh your teaching on planting and positioning made it work. The sweet sound of the classical has me hooked and im going through the free book now.

I purchased a C5. Unfortunately I did not thoroughly test it in the store and when I got home I was shocked to see the frets were not properly seated and the fret edges were appallingly sharp - enough to cut fingers. I had to spend hours filing them down. Very poor quality control. But it sounds ok. Nothing special and there are better instruments for a similar or cheaper price.

That might go away naturally. I got my C10 on discount because of the frets but once it got to a normal humidity the problem solved itself.
@Ulysses4990
@Ulysses4990 3 жыл бұрын
fingerhorn4 a video I watched recently mentioned that when analyzing a guitar for possible purchase, if the fret ends stick out the way you described, it means that the fret board has lost humidity and shrunk. The frets being metal remain the same length of course, and therefore end up sticking out. The video recommended staying away from such a guitar, as the body will have possibly shrunk as well, causing parts to separate, as well as compromised sound quality.. Just thought I'd share that info

I just bought a Cadete. Which is this guitar. But, 3/4 size. I wanted a guitar that would be more focused, brighter and easier to play. The Cadete has 48mm nut width. I really like that. Thanks for the review. I picked up the guitar again after learning in my yoof after 35 years of not playing. Went to the store thinking to get a C5 but ended up with the C7 for $500. I have to be honest, all these guitars sound pretty good to me, Yamaha, Cordoba, La Patrie etc. The C7 just edged it for me. Cordoba seem to offer great bang for the buck. I have to add that the guitar played much better after changing my strings to the Savarez strings that everybody likes, with the strings that it came with my C7 had quite a bit of buzz, something that other reviewers have noted. Great site, playing your Asturias sheet music at the moment 😁

Hi Bradford and all- I got the c5 after hearing repeatedly it would be the best starter guitar. I think it sounds great and I’m a complete noob, just starting andI’ve been using your pdf btw, thanks very much, you’re an excellent teacher. I found this video actually because I was having trouble fitting the c5 in my grasp. I’m 5’8” average build, but some how this thing feels bigger to me that it looks on you- it appears your sitting on a regular chair with your left thigh parallel to the ground and your right leg down a bit, is that correct? I find I have trouble holding it, my right leg has to be spread way out, and the lower body of the guitar sits at least a half, maybe 3/4 of the way down my right thigh- To say it simply, the guitar feels huge to me and I find it hard to sit with proper posture. Idk if you can comment on this but I’d be curious to hear and know how it seems to fit you so well, or if a smaller guitar body might be a better choice. Regarding comfortable posture it feels like I want the guitar closer to my low belly, otherwise it has to tilt towards me. Anyway thanks for the review and all the knowledge you share

I've been playing steel-stringed acoustic guitars for years but recently I've have wanted to start trying to play classical guitar. So, this past Christmas my wife bought a Yamaha CG142S for me. I believe it's in the same price range as the Cordoba C5. For such an inexpensive instrument, the Yamaha CG142s has great tonal quality. I play it every day. If I buy another classical I will probably move up to the Cordoba C9 because it is an all-solid cedar & mahogany guitar. Enjoy your videos & I appreciate your channel very much!

Thank you for these reviews! Cordoba is definately going to be my pick for a first classical guitar. But I am curious. What's the general opinion on classical guitars with a cutout? The Cordoba C5-CE is a little more expensive but i'm wondering if it would still be a great first classical to learn on, or if i should just go with one without the cutout. What do classical guitar teachers think about them? Would it be worth it as a beginner to be able to reach those lower frets? Does the cutout actually affect the sound?
@Thisisclassicalguitar
@Thisisclassicalguitar 2 күн бұрын
The classical guitar world generally does not use cutaways. So I'd recommend getting one without. That is slowly changing...very slowly but to be honest you don't really need it, especially at lower levels. I would say the reasons are mainly for tradition and some weird snobbery thing but some will say the sound is affected. Upper level instruments now use raised fingerboards which allows access to the upper frets and thus eliminating the need for a cutaway, or at least partially.

Pretty much the only classical guitars my local guitar store carries are Cordobas. The main salesman there only wants to buy from the company that consistently makes a quality he feels comfortable selling, especially for the small market of classical players here. @Thisisclassicalguitar
@Thisisclassicalguitar 4 ай бұрын
I would say that Cordoba's pricing pretty accurately reflects the quality. The C7 is that much better in terms of dollar to value. That said, as guitars get more expensive you are getting 'a little bit better' on a scale that is not dollar to dollar value. Getting that little bit more will cost quite a bit more. But as any trades person would say, you want the best tool for the job.

Hi. Thank you for the review. Now I’m convinced to buy a Cordoba C5 but I’m still unsure if I should buy a C5 Cedar or C5 Spruce. Sadly I don’t have the chance to play on those guitar before buying. When I read other reviews I get mixed feelings. Spruce version look for me much better (I like the contrast between that light top and darker sides) but I often read opinions like “cedar is better for nylon and spruce for steel string”. On other hand spruce is also used for more expensive guitars so I don’t think that it’s not suitable for nylon strings. As an experienced guitar, what do you think? Are the sound differences really so big?

The cedar is my strong recommendation for the Cordobas. They are a bit over-built so I feel the cedar is more responsive to the touch for these entry models. Both sound good though.

@@Thisisclassicalguitar Thank you for the fast answer :) I contacted the seller and they said that they also have C5 Limited Edition (Flamed Mahogany). Did you had the chance to play on it? I understand that the top is important so I will take the cedar. But what about the rest? Also I saw on Cordoba site that C5 Limited has a thinner soundboard (2.4mm and in the regular C5 it's 2.8 - 3.0mm). Is that bad?

I've had tons of my students buy Cordobas and I have a C10 for teaching as well and I've never seen a bridge issue of any kind. In fact no issue at all really. The only thing I've noticed is some humidity issues regarding the frets when they first arrive but that seems to get resolved once the instrument is cared for a bit.

@@Thisisclassicalguitar Thanks again for your response. The problem is mainly with the lower end versions like C3, C5 & C7. Haven’t had a classical guitar for decades. But I plan on moving to Spain for a year or so, and don’t plan to move much. So I’d like to start lessons to improve and maybe try flamenco. Could I buy this in Spain? Maybe I should see if it’s available at Guitar Center in Hollywood which is next to my grocery store.

Good idea, however, it's difficult to compare them as sometimes the luthier's design makes as much difference as the wood. I would like to do that with two guitars that are from identical luthiers/companies so only the wood is different. Tough for me to get two at one time though.

Is there enough of a difference in tone from the C5 to the C10 S to warrant spending an additional 700 dollars?
@Thisisclassicalguitar
@Thisisclassicalguitar 6 жыл бұрын
Well, it depends on your goals and and priorities. I own a $7000 guitar and it certainly isn't $6500 better but I play a lot and it's my profession so I want every little bit I can get from a guitar. The C10 does indeed have a better tone and sustain than the C5 but I can't say whether it is $700 better. I'd be happy with my students on either guitar depending on their budget.

Well thats a good question there is a little more projection of the bass strings on the C10 and of course its solid back and sides so it will last longer Guitars work on the pricipal of deminishing returns a $1000 guitar is Not twice as good as a $500 guitar its anout 15% better and a $20,000 guitar is about 5% better than A $5,000 guitar .i can use my cordoba C5 to play gigs with a mic a d only classical guitarist can tell the differance .C10 is not a rip off . C5 IS A ONE OF A KIND BARGIN AND C7 ABSOLUTELY SUCKS DONT BUY IT

I'm getting back into playing and am considering either the C5 or C9/C10 myself. I can afford the C9/C10 but from Bradford's comments in this video it sounds like he can't really detect much of a difference in sound quality between the C5 and the higher end models up to the C10. The only difference in each model is the material used for the sides and back (laminate vs solid wood) which may not affect sound in a noticeable way. The C5 really seems like a great bargain because it has the features that matter (solid sound board, truss rod).

@@stefano78 for me, the issue is I want a “crossover” with a slightly narrower nut width and a radius to the neck. Will probably get the c9 crossover.
