I was watching your first impressions, when I was waiting for my first tin of it (as I'm German it's quite a hassle to get ahold of US-Blends), and now that you've posted this Review, I am a quarter through my tin as well. The comparison with oats and "Müsli" (very popular breakfast beverage in Germany btw) is very apt. Nuts, raisins and fruits, but in a more spicy manner than Müsli would be. I totally agree, that Burley isn't = Cigarettes! I used to smoke Cigarettes too, and imho Cigarettes taste like absolutely nothing...Haunted Bookshop is a not overly complex, but very delicate blend, that I'll get in bulk as soon as I can, and for sure it's most suitable for autumn and winter times, it just "feels right" to smoke it whilst relaxing in your chair, reading some good lectures and just livin' life. One of the very few Pipe related channels I frequently watch, thanks for your efforts to make a great collection of pipe tobacco reviews. Kind regards from Germany, Deniz

I really love this blend. I bought a tin for my wife because she loves vapers and burley blends. She hated it so I decided to give it a shot. After smoking the whole tin I bought a pound in bulk it’s become my all day smoke. It’s very good and I’m more of an English guy, but I find myself reaching for this blend more and more.

The Bob Runowski recipes Ive tried so far I love; Riverboat Gambler is one you've gotta try. Although some have that "edge" to work through, a fee puffs later it's heaven. I also agree with your bit about Burley; not cigarette-y, it's just..good! Since we seem to have similar tastes, H.B. is another Runowski recipe I'm eager to try. Plus I'm a huge C&D fanboy, including the Pease recipes. More than 90% of their blends I have (out of 27) make me smile.

I purchased an ounce of this to try from my local shop. I wanted to like it so much because I loved the name and tin art but I really didn't like it. Maybe one day I'll jave to give it another try.

I got this in bulk[8oz] and I can say that what you have tinned has a tremendous ammount of virginia compared to what I received[mine looks like carter hall with a few ribbons in it from time to time]. It's a flavor game in bulk to find anything other then burley. Tbh I haven't been too impressed with it, but I may have to order again in a tin and see if it's more to my liking.

Another great video on a tobacco I’d spend time with. Recently been trying to figure out if I even liked burley or not…turns out I am a Virginia man, having an affair with burley…this was the blend that brought me around . I think the mention of “mushroom” was spot on, and it’s a taste I’ve run across in others but never had a word for it…best I had was miss, but that’s more a smell. But great video

Haunted Bookshop tastes amazing and the smoking mechanics are the best of maybe any blend I've ever tried, but my SO really thinks the secondhand aroma smells like cigs so I don't smoke it very often. I fully agree with you that it tastes nothing like cigarettes though, which makes the room note issue a bummer to me. I LOVE the sort of mushroomy, nutty, leaf mould/forest floor taste, and the stewed plummy note from the perique is fantastic. Totally awesome blend when you don't need to be around non-smokers.

I am going to give this a try. I am a night cap smoker on a daily basis. ........ not much can scare me. Thanx, looking forward to this.

Great review Bradley, if this was cigarette it probaby be Camel unfiltered, (been with cigs more than 30year)Yes its true Burleys can be sometime a bit harsh and dry-but nonetheless I find this minor issue with burleys so can be the virginias harsh ,if smoked too quickly, burleys are way more forgiving in this regard,AND wont bite as virginias tend, I like all burleys ,but as well I need my Virg/Kent and Vapers for the variety, otherwise things may get boring, Thank You, Paul

I just tried this blend and the nicotine is strong! Like most I do not inhale my pipe tobacco but I also never smoke burley or Virginia’s. The flavor was good but I had to stop halfway through the bowl because my head was spinning. I usually smoke English blends. Whew! I’m sitting down to let this one run it’s course haha! I’m a wimp.

Interesting that this blend is medium in nicotine to you, Burley often is very high in nicotine and it usually hits me like a truck. I generally avoid blends with Burley, but your flavor description has me intrigued, may give this a try. Thanks for the review!

This is my go to at work blend. Largely because of how it smokes, not to hot but burns well. At first I thought it was good but bland but as I smoked it the subtle changes won me over.

Pipe tobacco is all user preference but I will tell you this. This blend is for me. I've been through orientals, cavandishes, latakias, english, etc of all kinds, but this blend, being burley stong, dry, with a touch of of perique helped me understand what I want in a mix. I always go back to this, even though I have like 10+ blends on hand and any time. It comes slightly dry. Best from can if you dont want a hot, dry smoke. Focus on draw. Try not to over smoke or overheat. Breathe method works best. Try to heat indirectly with flame. Nice sweetness and grassy, hay flavor if that's what you're into. Be advised that the nicotine draw comes quick. Tamper with care. Love it.

I really enjoy it I’m on a quest to match the 1000 series Padron cigars with a pipe tobacco and so far this is the closest I’ve found to that musty black pepper taste, the name is fitting too the musty taste is a bit like an old book smell For me it’s a blend I hope doesn’t go to backorder land

I agree with most of your taste notes on this except it is hot and peppery for me every time. I am sure if I matched bowl size, cake and cadence I could have a similar experience as you. For now this blend is still difficult for me to enjoy and I am half though a tin in about a two year time. I'm gonna try a bigger bowl on the next one

I know you a vaper person but I think this could have been a contender for an all day smoke for you. It is for a lot of people and I have grown to love it also.

cigs if they're namebrand have potassium nitrate infused which keeps them burning all the way without puffing. this is the foul odor even pipe, or cigar smokers don't like the stench. i got some oriental blending stuff to make my own balkan, it makes my tobacco taste like camels if i put too much in it. i finally got a really good blend recipe now. 2 pts latakia, 1/2 pt oriental, 1 pt light virg, 1 pt red virg, 1 pt acadian perique, 1/2 pt chopped cigar leaf. i don't typically use either burley, or cavendish.

I tasted something that reminded me of Marboro red and mix of a Madura wrapper cigar.

This is the blend that taught me I do not like burley. Scents of manure and must, strong harsh flavor to my palate. Kept a tin or two in case my palate changes in the future, but not a fan at present.

Really do love this blend. I think its a medium, to medium plus. I have found that really puffing hard towards the end of the bowl it can become really ashy and taste like cigarettes. (For me personally) Key is to puff slow take your time and really taste that nutty flavour.

I'm ordering some orlik Golden sliced and considered ordering some of this as well. Would you recommend this for someone starting pipe smoking?

I learned an important lesson the first time I loaded my pipe with this stuff - the nicotine knocked me on my butt. Kind of scared me off, but I did like it. Maybe I’ll try a half bowl or so.

A more accurate name for that earthy, mushroom flavor is 'Umami'.

I think the real cigarette-esque quality about burley tobaccos is that they tend to make me smell like I was smoking a cigarette. It doesn’t taste like it to me though, nor does it smell like a Camel when I’m smoking it.

Burley for cigarettes which is a very very low grade white burley is definitely not on the same level of taste or smell as quality burley pipe tobacco. It’s not even close. Haunted bookshop is one of my favorites with my morning Haitian single origin coffee. So good together

You should really try c&d Exclusive if you're a fan of Elizabethan. Similar flavor but more perique and way stronger.

I just received a sample and had a bowl last night. Tin note: apricots. I actually prefer this to Elizabethan (I call it “Bess’s”) which I do also love. It is milder on the nicotine, making it easier for nicotine lighweights. The burley adds some complexity to the taste and compliments the virginian sweetness superbly. The perique is a little more pronounced than Elizabethan, with that trademark nasal “irritation”. I don’t get mushrooms but after a few more bowls I hope to capture all of the different nuances. And I like that it’s American.

Why are my hobbies so expensive. Pipes and whiskey, both of which are absurdly priced where I live. Tried to order early morning pipe, the tin was $24 for 200g. Shipping was 45 bucks.

Canadian cigs are all Virginia tobacco, so when I smell a burly I am reminded of American cigs. I still love a burly. Hmmmm, I also like Virginia. So my question Bradly is on average how many different blends would you smoke in a day, say like a Saturday? And how varied would they be in their constituents?

Haunted Bookshop is horrible. The burley is just raunchy and acrid.I don't understand how some folks dig this.
