In this video, Rob from A Life That Travels reviews United Airlines' long-haul economy class on a flight from Sydney to the USA.
United Airlines has really upped its game in the past 5 years. The introduction of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner has definitely added a tonne of extra comfort to their previous long-haul offering.
At the end of 14 hours in the air, Rob was feeling noticeably less dehydrated and fatigued.
So how does the rest of the journey stack up?
This detailed review of United Airlines' economy takes you from check in through to boarding, takeoff through to landing.
The final opinion?
United is definitely now a live option for flying across the Pacific.

Welcome to A Life That Travels, a channel dedicated to providing independent, unbiased advice and stories from around the world.
Why does A Life That Travels exist?
Because SOCIETY shouldn't set the LIMITS on WHO YOU CAN BE.
But it tries to.
Making decisions about what to do with your life is hard and there's way too much pressure on people to "work it all out" and to "find your passion"... like you're some kind of failure if you don't.
So here's the truth.
You've got plenty of time and "working it out" is hard.
You can study (uni or technical/vocation ed).
You can go travelling.
You can get a job and dive straight into your career.
And you know what?
ALL of these are PERFECTLY acceptable options.
And that's where A Life That Travels comes in.
* Interviews with REAL PEOPLE who've done INTERESTING things with their lives, through study, work and travel, so that maybe you can find your own ideas in their stories
* Travel stories, destinations and advice... so if you want to see the world you'll see it's not so scary stepping out of your comfort zone.
* Unbiased reviews of universities and other study options so you can cut through the noise and make clearer decisions.

I've flown both United and Qantas to Australia in economy. Both are equally so so. In fact I thought the food was better on United. Maybe the seats on Qantas were a little better but not much.
@ChoosingYourUni
@ChoosingYourUni 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I probably lean a similar way. I found Qantas crew to be much more friendly, efficient and engaged than United. With the new Dreamliner that United flies the comfort of economy was similar (as you point out). Still, if faced with the choice, I’d probably take QF over UA if the route were the same.

I have done this trip dozens of time in all 3 classes for work & holidays. You need to plan your trip as far as bring a few extras such as snacks. Any flight is what you make of it.. I have flown QANTAS, Air NZ, United & Continental in the day. You need to ALWAYS bring eye shades & ear plugs as people love to stand & gas bag when you are trying to sleep. I love the USA & America but Americans are hard to travel with as they are so loud & demanding of people.

@@matthewbrown6163 @davewreslt --> gents, appreciate your respective comments on flying on these airlines. I'll keep those on the thread as they're useful but will delete the personal stereotypes, which you're by all means welcome to have (they're based on your own experiences, so who's to judge?) but I'm keen to keep comments useful for anyone who reads them.

Flying United from Sydney to San Fran and then on to Toronto in a couple of weeks. Chose United because I'm 6'4" and the seat pitch on United was 81cm's whereas on Qantas and others it's 79cm's.

Good call. Those couple of extra cms count for a lot at the end of a long flight. The Dreamliner plane on that route is really nice.

On the subject of legroom, I’m flying to London from Denver in may, in economy on the 787-8, I am 6’ tall, not sure what that is in meters, around 1.80-1.85?? However I am pretty much all that torso, with only a 29” inseam, so short legroom doesn’t bother me as much. Headroom on the other hand, how is that on a 787??
@ChoosingYourUni
@ChoosingYourUni 5 жыл бұрын
Should be fine. I"m just a pinch under 6' and had no issues. The 787 really is a great plane. In economy there aren't really great head rests though, so if you're hoping to sleep a good neck pillow would probably be a good investment. There are tonnes of different types of those on the market now, so you'd still have plenty of time to try out a few before doing the trip.

2200-2300 meters is “at altitude”?? I guess not everyone lives at 9300 feet (2800?? meters).
@ChoosingYourUni

Do you live up high? I live at 300ft of altitude and Australia’s highest mountain is only 2200m or so - so it’s still pretty high for us coastal dwellers! 😂

This winter has been pretty interesting with how much snow we’ve had, and avalanche danger, but it’s made for great skiing, but now it’s headed towards hiking, biking, and golf season. But, yeh, whenever I fly, the flight is like a stepping stone down to whatever altitude. I usually fly out of Denver, so they barely have to adjust the pressure once they close the door.

I feel like United have improved in recent years, but it really depends which plane and route you are on. Improving but still hit and miss. Sorry you scored a miss.

@@ChoosingYourUniairline competition between Australia and the US has skyrocketed over the past 5/6 years so everyone had to up their game on those routes. It used to be Qantas, Delta, United, bit of Virgin, now you can add Air New Zealand, American Airline (game changer), even Fiji air.... Cathay and Ethiad are also trying to drag some customers to the US East Coast via Asia/UAE. Lots to choose from:-)
@ChoosingYourUni
@ChoosingYourUni 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is very true @@anned9696. I've never done the trip to the US via Asia or the Middle East, but airfares are surprisingly affordable using those options, even if the route isn't an intuitive one.
