Hello and welcome back to the SquashBagel
Today I will be going over my thoughts and opinions of the Head Radical 135X, which is available, as always, at squashateers.co.za/
1. Specs
Shape: Traditional
Head Size: 490 sqcm
: Head tried to take a new spin on the hybrid model of rackets
: The normal radical 135 has a 460 sqcm head size, and the 120 SB has a 470 sqcm head size (Similar to the TF Suprem)
: Their teardrops normally have a 500 sqcm head size, so the 135X is somewhere in between those, without the 'hybrid shape'
Balance: Head heavy, which helps with straight line hitting, but can take away the volley option.
Weight: 135 grams for the frame weight, but around 165g overall, depending on the grip and strings used.
2. Some Tweaks
Strings:
- Stock standard Head Reflex 1.20 mm (Which is rather good on this racket)
- TF 305 1.10mm strungs at 24lbs, which is great, but I heard a theory surrounding what strings to use per string pattern density.
: In a nutshell, if there are larger gaps between your strings, you'll do better with thicker strings, whereas with smaller heads, where strings aren't too far apart, you'll find a better response with thinner strings. I'll have to explore that theory and can comment more when I have tested it out, but if you've heard something similar, let me know in the comments below.
: I do think the Head Reflex 1.20 mm strings were a lot better than the TF 1.10mm on this particular racket.
- Ashaway PowerNick 18s, but made a rookie error. I strung it at 24lbs, but if you are familiar with Ashaway strings, you need to string 10-15% lower than what you normally would, before the PowerNicks contain a material called ZYEX. So in essence, the racket felt like I strung it at 26 pounds, which would take away from the power you normally get at 24lbs.
- Ashaway Multinick 18s, 1.15mm at 24lbs was the best combination for me as it ticked a lot of the boxes. I found it delivered great feel and power compared to all the others.
3. Pros
Large head size
- Very forgiving
- Good entry into the traditional frames
Power
- Generates a lot of power, at the right tension
Durability
- Seems rather durable. It's a solid racket
Balance
- The head-heavy balance is great for line hitting.
4. Cons
Control
- I don't believe it's one of the best touch/control rackets out there, maybe due to the tension/strings I tried.
- Drops were good, but I believe the 120 SB and the 135 radical with the smaller head sizes would deliver more
Manoeuvrability
- At an overall weight of 165 g, this isn't the most manoeuvrable racket out there.
- Racket prep is key, but if you've got that sorted out, you will be rewarded.
Feel
- Depending on the strings used, but it isn't a soft frame.
5. Who is this racket for?
- Are thinking of switching to a traditional frame racket.
It has helped me so much, to the point that I'm now using the TF Suprem again. To have jumped from the Sonic Core to the Suprem would have been a lot harder for me if it was for the 135X.
- I think it would also suit players who play with a traditional head shape but are looking to get more power, and the volley isn't a critical part of their game.
- I think it would also be a great racket for talented juniors who are up-and-coming, and still need to develop their overall court play and ability.
Let me know below if you've tried it and if you prefer control or power?
