Defunct Games reviews Hyper-5 and Laserpitium, available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Switch and PC.
Lately, I’ve been so busy reviewing great games like Killer Frequency, Bat Boy and Soundodger 2, that I somehow completely missed a pair of good-looking shoot ‘em ups published by EastAsiaSoft. I’m talking about two games in particular, Hyper-5 from Hyper Productions and Laserpitium from The Reeteam, two first-time developers trying to make their mark in the competitive shoot ‘em up space. Are either of these games worth buying? That’s what we’re going to find out right now when I review Hyper-5 and Laserpitium.

Hyper-5
While a bit on the short side, Hyper-5 offers hours of gameplay and the type of production value that you rarely see in this style of shoot ‘em up. It’s even more impressive when you know that it comes from a first-time developer, giving me hope for the future of action games. With its cinematic look, incredible graphics and addictive upgrade system, Hyper-5 is the type of shooter that just about anybody can get into.
Laserpitium
Laserpitium is the kind of throwback shooter that doesn’t care if it’s ripping off the classics, just as long as it looks good doing it. Still, as a debut release from a new company, you could do a lot worse. The levels are fun to play through and the graphics and boss fights will keep you invested. Now that The Reeteam has proven that they can make a good game, it’s time for them to show us their original and innovative side.
