Defunct Games reviews Hyper-5 and Laserpitium, available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Switch and PC.
Lately, I’ve been so busy reviewing great games like Killer Frequency, Bat Boy and Soundodger 2, that I somehow completely missed a pair of good-looking shoot ‘em ups published by EastAsiaSoft. I’m talking about two games in particular, Hyper-5 from Hyper Productions and Laserpitium from The Reeteam, two first-time developers trying to make their mark in the competitive shoot ‘em up space. Are either of these games worth buying? That’s what we’re going to find out right now when I review Hyper-5 and Laserpitium.

Hyper-5
While a bit on the short side, Hyper-5 offers hours of gameplay and the type of production value that you rarely see in this style of shoot ‘em up. It’s even more impressive when you know that it comes from a first-time developer, giving me hope for the future of action games. With its cinematic look, incredible graphics and addictive upgrade system, Hyper-5 is the type of shooter that just about anybody can get into.
Laserpitium
Laserpitium is the kind of throwback shooter that doesn’t care if it’s ripping off the classics, just as long as it looks good doing it. Still, as a debut release from a new company, you could do a lot worse. The levels are fun to play through and the graphics and boss fights will keep you invested. Now that The Reeteam has proven that they can make a good game, it’s time for them to show us their original and innovative side.

Not a pure scrolling shmup, but I love Nova Drift. It's a rogue-lite Asteroids-on-steroids with a TON of upgrade options and interesting enemies.

Hyper-5 and Laserpitium are just wonderfully shmup-y names, I will give them full credit for that. Also, your mention of it made me want to look up prices for Einhander and hooooo boy was that a mistake. Rerelease the darn game Square!

Looks like a Sine Mora sequel, but grindy with upgrades.

First game really has a thunderforce vibe to it. How's the music? I find that a good soundtrack can up a decent shmup a couple points. QOTD, Favorite recent shooter Cotton Reboot!

Hyper 5 waa great. Only 5 stages but it takes about 20 minutes to finish one with the boss fight. So takes a hour to finish the 5 levels. Levels also have different paths for replayability. 3D graphics are great. Hopefully the devs make some money and make a sequel with more levels. The games retailed for $15 on release. So they only charged $3 a level. At this rate a 10 level game would be $30, or $60 for 20 levels.

ZeroRanger isn't really a "recent" shmup, is it? It's still an all-time great for me though. I believe it's still receiving updates, with a third mode incoming at some point down the line.

Governments must be too busy complaining about games rather than playing them, or they would know giving a computer too much power over everything never ends good. 😉😂🤣 But seriously, both of these look interesting. As for the question, shoot, don't think I've even played a shooter since Cuphead, is that recent enough? If not, then I don't think I've even got an answer.

Once again, in order to know how to play these two games (should it ever come to that), how do these games save?

In the case of Hyper-5, you will be able to start at the level you died at. You'll be able to start at whatever stage you want when you beat the game, but if you only get to level 2 in your playthrough, then you can only start at level 2. There's no saving mid-game when it comes to Laserpitium, but you can play the levels in any order you want. This is designed to be an arcade-style shooter, where you go through six levels and beat the game. The gimmick here is that you can choose the first five levels you want to play before jumping in or you can choose an A or B route after each level. However, once you die, you will need to start over at the beginning. Neither of these games are very long, so beating them in a single sitting (once you've become good at the games) is easy and doable.
