Review: Jane Davenport Fabulous Figures and Whimsical Girls Books!
I just receive Jane Davenport's new book Fabulous Figures and Whimsical Girls and today I will give you an overview of both books so you can see if they would be useful to you in your art and crafting.
Below are affilate links to the books on Amazon, they offer a generous preview of the book so you can have a close look at some of the contents)
Fabulous Figures: amzn.to/2I2Il5L
Whimsical Girls: amzn.to/2jEfBpe
These are a follow up to her popular book Beautiful Faces: amzn.to/2wjxFyf
An overview of Fabulous Figures: This is a drawing instruction book that really succeeds in simplifying the female figure into a formula that even the most novice drawers can follow. Her charming illustration will sweep you into her lovely world of fashion illustration fantasy. If you are a fan of Jane Davenports iconic style and want to learn to draw like her you will enjoy this book. Even if you do not want to draw the photography and artwork make this book a pleasure. Jane also has a workshop to go with this book if you would like more guidance and it can be found on her website: janedavenport.com/ *If it is not open yet it will be soon.
Whimsical Girls (Happy Hour Art Journal): This book is like a cross between and adult coloring book and an art journal with the hard parts done, it's ready for you to add your own touch and fill in the good stuff! The book is filled with pre collaged pages and Jane's beautiful line artwork for you to color. The paper is high quality to accept a variety of mixed media supplies. This is not an art instruction book, it is an activity book, ora pre started art journal that you can finish. It's charming and fun and everything we would expect from Ms. Davenport.
Jane's books never dissapoint. If you like her style you'll love her books.
*I received these book free of charge from the publisher for review consideration. I was not required to do a video nor was a compensated to do so. As with any video you have my honest opinion and I honestly like these books.

The books look inspiring and fun. Some of the comments below give me an uneasy feeling that some people have problems with people who make a bit more money with their ideas than the average crafter. Creating such a book takes a lot of time and work. I never envy people who work for their money :)) There are far too many out there who make millions by literally stealing money from people`s pockets. Someone wrote: "I would have it for free but I wouldn`t give a dime for this book." Nowadays its easy to say that because we have all these wonderful people like Lindsay who make such great tutorials FOR FREE. I don`t take that fact for granted and am extremely thankful for every inspiration and new know-how I get FOR FREE, because it`s a great gift the younger generations don`t appreciate as much and as often as they should because they grew up with this abundance and luxury.

It’s disgusting how some people want artists to work for free. It takes a lot to create something from nothing. I once asked this influential person in my town about local or government loans for artists and she got offended. But she sure comes to me every year asking me for free donations for a charity!

Darkis Art So true. I don`t know how many times in my life people expected me to draw things for free, to design projects for free. Art is considered a hobby, no matter how many degrees you, how many art lessons you took and how many years of practice it takes to achieve all the skills and knowledge you have. Most people literally think it`s all a children`s game when it comes to art and even design.

I wish I could heart this comment. Just because your an artist doesn't mean you need to be starving. I don't get putting someone down just because they are about that grind and making that money. If you won't buy the book than don't no need to put someone down or try to bring them down when you literally have the choice to not buy it. Even if Lindsay did a video on a page out of the book you could follow along without owning 1 of the books.

Great review! I'll have to check these out 😉 I like that you mentioned the way to adapt the technique to draw younger figures, or fuller figures and how you can use these techniques to improve your work, but that you can still have work that looks like your own. And using a variety of paper in a book so people can experiment and have an art journal/mixed media experience is brilliant!

I bought this book and was not disappointed, i thought using the hearts is a masterstroke ,yes it's just using it as proportions for whimsical figures, there is many ways that can be built on ,for newbies it's a fun way to approach figures ,i loved it .

Me too! I think it really simplifies the female form. I love to attend life drawing sessions but that is not for everyone and some people would be mortified by the thought. I think she makes are approachable for beginners and that is one of the things I love. She encourages us to play and use our supplies.

Just to update you, Lindsay, I now have 3 of these and they are all wonderful. I actually needed the art journals to keep me motivated because I am so achievement-driven. I was getting very frustrated with unsuccessful pages so having Jane's journal to set me on a successful path was much more satisfying. Eventually, I hope I'll be familiar enough with my supplies and how they interact to do more on my own but I am appreciating Jane's help getting to that point.

+thefrugalcrafter, I like how you mentioned putting the book along with some colored pencils out on the coffee table. It's like you are serving something fun and delicious to guests or whoever else likes to spend time in your living room. Reminds me of a fancy crystal nail file I bought recently, engraved with a saying, "Eat more art!" Maybe put the pencils in a pretty box labeled, "Help yourself to color in this book. Eat more art!" ☺️

Thanks so much for your comprehensive review of these books. I almost didn't watch as I wasn't especially interested in either book. While I've admired Jane's work, it didn't seem to offer anything that interested me. I have done life drawing and painting and both enjoy that and can fairly easily achieve decent results. What I can't do, and what Jane teaches in her book, is how to draw without a model. Her approach looks to be fun and relaxing. Based on your review, I will now be considering purchasing.

That way I can work in one, completing the pages, while I still have a clean copy!!

I have her Faces book and was amazed at the results that I got after one lesson with the video that you can get with the same name. I did start drawing things that looked like her style but thought this to be okay at first until I am able to use the techniques to develop my own style. (This has not happened yet because I just haven't had time and have too many interests.) I am very excited about her Figures book. I definitely will have to get it and hopefully I will have enough time to practice.

thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Hi, Lindsay! Yels Yels hinted at a potential book of yours :)) So, I read your comment and find it extremely interesting. I often thought of you as an author and I just have to share this-LOL. I believe (just my opinion) that Jane D. hit a nerve with the idea of dividing the female body into hearts. I think her awesome idea has the potential to make its mark in the art community in future :)) And then I remembered how often I thought about "your book" haha. I would love to have a Weirich "Arts and Crafts Frugal Encyclopedia". You came out with the idea of "Ask A Crafter" and it was a huge success:)) When I have a question in mind, my brains always lead me to you. Easy formula: Question??? = Solution-Lindsay Weirich!!! In my mind, you are the only one who should write such a book, based on decades of knowledge! xoxo Josi

I agree with your review of Fabulous Figures. It is an amazing book that she put a lot of thought into. It is very accessible, too. Yes, her work is always similar, but anyone can take any tutorial and make it their own. In addition, she has a background in fashion drawing so her work will reflect that.

I'm going to echo this book being a great resource for developing your own style! I had the same worries, I love Jane's work but I want my work to be my own. My own weird, creepy style has been slowly developing but I've always struggled with figures. So I grabbed this book and am going through lesson by lesson and I can already see it benefiting my style outside of the lessons. Very helpful book!

Bought 1 of the books 1 was backordered and 1 was preselling but I think at least the faces and body ones are what I have been needing to help me learn how to paint figures and add faces. I am new to the art world at least the painting side f it anyway and am super happy that you don't actually have to have talent yo be able to paint and it not look like your 2 yr old did it. No more stick figures for me, I may learn to paint actual fuman looking figures. You and Cinnamon have made me get out of my shell and pick up painting and I thank y'all for that because I have always feared trying because if I couldn't do it I would beat myself up over it.

The first book w/ be a nice addition to the stamps for someone like me who cannot draw but would like to, i.e. to add the body, etc.

I just bought another figures book that I have been working with and have had problems with balance....this seems to be what I really need. I might look into this when I finish my other one. Oh heck....why wait?! I just ordered it from Amazon. LOL. I will work in both books simultaneously. I mostly work with floral projects and need to widen my horizons. I am fighting with noses and mouths!! Who knew how hard those two could be. I get my eyes in place and then the nose looks okay...but when I add the mouth, it becomes laughable...and even more so after I start to doctor up the nose to try to match the mouth. It is too funny.

I really missed the Sketchbook Sunday

It was hubby's birthday yesterday and I had to pick up the cake in the morning (when I normally sketch) and then we had company and I didn't want to be stressed about working on my husbands birthday. I will have something next week tho!

I am a long time admirer of Jane’s artwork. However, I took her class of this on her website and was very disappointed at how expensive the class was and how little you actually learned for the money. I ordered this book on Amazon and find a lot of good information in it. I am not a fan of her girl’s skinny legs and idea of hands and feet but not really there. I am one to grab bits and pieces of techniques from everywhere and then create my own style using the knowledge. It is a fun book worth a look. I just wish Jane’s classes were more affordable as they are not in my budget range.

What about doing a video on drawing with water with flower petals? You said you've done that before and I would actually be more interested in the flower petal drawings. Don't really draw people. Thanks. Marguerite

Ooooh if I can do Jane’s style of people sketching, may I then be excused from the people sketches in our drawing class?!? LOL It’s a good thing I’ve got a plethora of sketchbooks because that young man needs a resounding spanking for being such a pistol. LOL Just kidding ... sorta ... kinda ... maybe ... not. lol

The lack of diversity in Jane's work is a huge turn off for me. All her women have the same elements in the face and the body, which is not a celebration of womanhood at all. Even the most basic tutorials of the female body go into pear shape, apple shape, inverted triangle... But hers is the two hearts which essentially just hourglass. And yes, I understand it's stylized, but give me a break man. It's a shame because I really enioy her use of color, whimsical lines, mixed media... But hourglass with with twig legs? Really? It's just dissapointing.

And yes, I understand that not everyone enjoys drawing plus size women. That's fine. But even petite ladies have diversity.

You might want to have a look at the book in person, I am afraid I might not have been as though showing off all of the book because she does show adaptations of plus size girls, what she calls "juicy figures" and while they are an idealized plus size figure her art is heavily influenced by fashion illustrations and fantasy. I't's not for everyone but I think you would find a lot of diversity in the pages. There is a nice "look inside" feature on amazon if you care to see more. The heart is not to make the hourglass but more to proportionally divide the figure. I should have been more clear in my review. Thank you for your thoughtful comment.

I'll definitely check it out next time I go to Michael's, since the book seems very pretty to look at from what you've shown, I'm just afraid her version of "juicy figures" is just more busty and with bigger behinds. I understand it's based on fashion illustration, but fashion is changing to incorporate other body structures and it's very hard for me to understand not wanting to do variety. Again, not just plus size, but actual different shapes since the hourglass figure is not the only one. This is just my personal opinion and interpretation. And please don't think I'm making any suggestions as to her character, she seems like a sweet and creative woman. Thanks for taking the time, I always look forward to your videos!

Cris AD I’ve taken her I heart drawing class which is based on this technique and I’m a plus size girl, and found her lessons easy to adapt the lines to look more like me, it’s super easy to tweak and I’m certainly not stick legs and tiny waist. It’s a bare bones way of doing it with an easy way to morph into your desired body shape. Hope that helps. X

Cris AD This book is, as I understand it, a help for people who can`t draw! And so you have to begin simple in order to help people to overcome the fear of drawing figures. Drawing different shapes of figures is very difficult and another league of drawing. I`m not necessarily a fan of Jane`s work but that`s a matter of taste. At University we begin with simple skinny models and all the complicated figures come later. So, give yourself and others a break and don`t take things so dead serious. This book is meant for crafters, not for high-end artists.

More books to inspire women to copy cat her look, and they are stuck drawing just like her instead of trying to find thier own style. Teaching technique is good but also letting them know they have to venture out and go find thier own style to make it thier own. Go to Instagram you will see many JD look alike art, its repetitive and boring, as an art teacher I find her books to be nothing but money makers and bait to reel women into thinking they are artist, when in reality ur just mimicking her look.

Jane Davenport doesn’t impress me at all. I wouldn’t want my granddaughters to get ahold of this book. Too stereotypical of a Barbie doll and not what a young lady in reality looks like, and certainly not the impression I want filling a teenage mind in today’s society. Maybe I’m not seeing this in the right perspective.

I think I should have shown more of her competed artwork because I think her painting are innocent and ethereal and not intended to make anyone feel excluded or ashamed of their bodies. She is inclusive of all people regardless of their artistic ability or size. She shows proportions for child through adult and fashion (skinny), average and plus size figures and while they are idealized I find the inclusive, ethnically too. It is all pretty art and some have issue with that but I don't, we all see enough negative and ugly in the world as it is, all we need to do it turn on the TV or open the computer, so when I am enjoying art for pleasure I prefer uplifting. Not that one is better, more like to each their own.

Okay, from a man's perspective, let me say that so many are being catty. Is it a jealousy thing, or just a night for nit-picking. Relax ladies! Lindsay did a fantastic job of reviewing two books by a fellow artist. Since Jane lives on the other side of the world, even though she released her stuff in the US, I don't think she's going to steal anyone's limelight. Lindsay, I admire your work, and the fact that you take it upon yourself to not necessarily promote other artists, but you don't feel threatened by them. You ROCK. And, dear girl, I love that you missed Sketchbook Sunday and put your family first. That attests to your character and family values!!

I think adults look to far into things sometimes, and btw Jane isn't model figured either so I highly doubt she would only show skinny women. I have a 15 yr old daughter that wanted to be an artist and be able to draw like her older brother and father starting around 5 that she would practice every day. I would buy her this book never worrying about if she would think that is how women should look. I think people need to try and take some things at face value and not dive so deep.

Jim Flack it’s certainly not a “catty or jealousy thing” as you call it. I’m surprised you even weigh in on this topic. Are you just an old man with nothing better to do or a perverted dirty old man who likes to prey on the opposite sex? Enough said, I’m out. Do not respond.
