You are very correct in the details of the 844. I personally worked and am proud to have repaired the cow catcher on this very locomotive. It does indeed have a hidden coupler. My craft was a Boilermaker in the Omaha shops.

FYI, the tightest radius track available for Kato Unitrack is 6", but for long traincars I recommend no tighter than 12".

Enjoyed your review of the Bachmann DD40 and you said you would be doing some N Scale reviews in the future. KUDOS 4 months later you are reviewing probably one of the most popular N Scale Models to be offered to the N Scale Community. As always on a scale of 5 stars, your review exceeds expectations and achieves 6 stars. Retired military here and the extra star is for your comments regarding our flag. I salute you. I too have the complete set. I had THT install LokSound Micro ver 4 with optional firebox flicker, cab interior lighting, and operating MARS Light. Keep up the awesome work!

James thanks for this n scale review, as I model in that scale. Although I watch all your review videos as they are top notch and honest. I model the Canadian Pacific modern era, but definitely considering buying this set. Great review.

No doubt about Kato and Arnold being the best running and most realistic N scale out there.

Enjoyed your review on the set. On my next trip to the States, I will be collecting my set, ordered from BLW, to add to my N scale collection, which currently stands at 124 locos, about 75% from Kato. It was surprising to see a review of an N scale model.
@NicksCollectableCreations9 жыл бұрын
I am surprised James, you didn't go for the lighted interior version of the excursion set :) I think this is the first DCC equipped locomotive from them. They really did a superb job on this set, especially when you consider it is N scale. One of my OCD things is the lack of silver painted bearing caps that everyone else leaves off. That and the gloss black finish really makes this 844 look wonderful out of the box. The flags just looks amazing.

What am a little disponted about this 844 the paint on the stack and the bolier door hatch were the head light and Mars light sit they made it to much light gray tone to it on the freight version its a darker gray tone to it and also notice there's no fire hose only sticker on the side of the tender but of it all that looks very cool

in 2010 Columbine had brake problems on the Portland Rose trip because #844 had to go down Sherman Hill without a diesel. UP replaced the wheel in Portland and moved it to Pocatello where it was added to the train.

Great detail and shines the way it should in real life. Real railroads do not like dirty trains so all that destructive weathering tells me the crew is too lazy to wash the trains and the boss is not doing his job. Kato makes beautiful trains like Arnold does. Very well made too. I want that whole set but cannot afford it until I hit the super lotto prize!

I remember riding the Portland Rose train across Oregon. I remember it because I was motion sick and hung my head out the top part of the door at the end of what ever car I was on. The conductor spent a lot of time with me and my mom while I was sick. When Amtrak took over the route I always wanted to try again. Now the route is no longer used :(

Beautiful set Eric. Very nice nice review. Thanks so much for your details. Please clarify what MSRP stands for. I am retired and just getting back into model trains after many years. I am on budget and yearn to get this set eventually. I wish there were more hobby shops around my area like in older days but alas, internet buying is taking over. I'm being too cautious probably. Thanks again.

@bbrockRailFan9 жыл бұрын
I run mine on my largest 13 3/4 track and it runs around smooth and realistic looking. I also run it on the 12 3/4 curves. I personally wouldn't run it on the Kato 9 3/4 curves, I am sure it would work just not my preference on this many wheels.

Yea these Reviews : ) Make ya want these Trains like Cookies and momma says no More with authority, I'm getting my First N scale Kato set the Amtrak set.. and for it I bought a Table from Office Max a 30 x 30 x 96 so I'll have some length for my ole Amtrak to stretch his Arms.. What I wanting to know on the Kato U.P. Set what was the Radius of the Track you were using it's kind of hard to tell in Videos and I thought you was going to mention the Size but either I didn't catch it or something stopped the Video before it was Mentioned.. :( I bought some extra sets of Curve for my Amtrak set.. The 12 3/8 - 45 that comes in the Set and then I bought the (2) 4 pack of 13 3/4 -45 so I could make a Full radius on each end of my Table, instead of using the 12 3/8 -45.. what was wondering in the Video you made jiwii2000 was the curve track you were using was it the ( 12 3/8 - 45 ) or the 13 3/4 - 45 I've always like steam engines and this set.. Sets the wow factory really High but like many out there the pocket that holds the Green is slimming Down so it may be a while before I can enjoy this Set unless a Little Bird drops me a Gift.. Like your Video allot wanna see more N scale please :) Thanks for your Time AKR

Hiya, "akr'I don't have an FEF, but I've gotten two other recent steamers (Bachmann K-4 and BLI PRR M-1). They both indicated that 9.3/4 radii track should work but for myself and most of my RR friends plan on 11.5" radii to be safe. I generally won't post on a thread this aged, but it seemed you might still be looking. Unsolicited advice: Kato's website will be sure to carry that sort of info, or you can try a vendor, Brooklyn Locomotive Works. Those fellas know stuff I forgot a long long time ago.
@TheSupradude267 жыл бұрын
The radius he is using is the smallest. 9.75" radius which is why the long cars look out of place on such a tight curve. My old layout had a minimum of 13.5" radius and every car and loco, Kato included, worked perfectly.

Hey James I know I asked before and I'm basically asking again what was the Radius of the Curves I think I heard you say this is the smallest Oval that KATO puts out if so then it would be the V5 oval if so then the 844 would run on it Fine is the Radius of the Track you had the V5 or the Master 2 Please Reply.. Thanks for your Time Akr

GREAT video. Only thing I wanted to add was that these aren't prototypes. These are models of realistic locomotives and cars that were in use for a long time. In fact the 844 is still alive and run. A prototype would be a one of piece. These are recreations of things that still exist and were used by UP for a long, long time.
@TheDamnoranges2 жыл бұрын
The term prototype refers to how close the reproduction is to the real thing. I also thought it was confusing, but that's how kt's refered to.

Thank you! The direction that people place these flags has bugged me in every video I've watched but yours. It's a flag. It's supposed to look like it's waving in the breeze so don't fly it backwards. Great review.
@TheSupradude267 жыл бұрын
I've always wondered why the flag on soldiers uniforms and their shoulders were "backwards", but if it's to keep the stars to the front (to the right) I guess it makes sense. Just looks odd as you never see the flag displayed like that.
@thomashorner74746 жыл бұрын
it still bugs me because the union field [stars] belongs in the upper left not right when displayed flat against a wall, arm,or building

A baggage car/railway post office car--is often called a 'combine'. One wonders if the names of car type and the town didn't get mixed up somewhere.(sorry to post on an aged thread like this one, You get caught between wanting to pass along some information and also to not seem like a know-it all.
