IGFTW Ep. 17 is about a Ganbare Goemon/Mystical Ninja title for the Sony PlayStation that was left in Japan--Ganbare Goemon: Kuru Nara Koi! Ayashige Ikka No Kuroi Kage. Did Konami deem it too bland to localize? Or is it a hidden gem for import collectors? Watch the video to find out!

UPDATES & AMENDMENTS: -13:04 While the Japanese release of the first N64 Goemon, Neo Momoyama Bakufu no Odori, featured some scenes that were fully voiced (and some wonderful musical bits), this game has voice acting throughout each cutscene, due in large part to the CD format!

Once upon a time, a friend of mine and I rented the first N64 Goemon title, and I've been a huge fan of the series ever since. On another interesting note, the main Goemon cast have all been represented in the Yu-Gi-Oh official card game, with Sasuke's initial card being a staple of competitive decks at the time it was released.

Zach Wickwire Thanks a lot, and long time no see/talk/comment/whatever! :)I'd recommend any of the other Super Famicom games if you want to try something else from the series other than the two you've played. If you don't mind going without a box and manual, you can often find the carts for 2, 3, and 4 for ten bucks or less on ebay.

The Import Gaming FTW Master is back! And it's great to have another episode to have on a Japanese game I know nothing about and still will not know much about, but at least I know about the game thanks to you and your series :D As for the game, it is as you said, looks like a solid standard 3D platformer along with other fun elements, as most Ganbare Goemon games appear like well designed games. Also nice Goemon Defender joke, soon forces will collide... :P

2:32 RIP Working Designs... :( It's cool to see another 3D Goemon game. But I have to agree about the stages not looking nearly as creative as other titles. Most of the areas looked really empty to me in your footage. I do have to admit, I like each character getting their own robot and all of them merging for the end. ;)

RPGtourguide Thanks for watching! The relatively nice graphics (excluding art direction) and the Impact stuff are the only really good things on offer here for people who won't be able to enjoy the story bits. At this point, I'd love to see another 2D Goemon, 3D Goemon, mobile game, compilation disc, whatever. Anything is better than the pathetic state the series is in now, as it's been relegated to a pachinko franchise currently. Heart-breaking.

+Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) I'm a huge fan of the Goemon series, and I agree, this game was a huge let down.... The best Goemon game for the PS1 in my opinion is, Ganbare Goemon: Uchū Kaizoku Akogingu. Because it replicates Ganbare Goemon 3 (my favorite Goemon on the Super Famicom) and goes back to what made Goemon fantastic. It's very sad that the original team broke off and no new Goemon games are being made anymore. :(

wrena79 It's best to stick with the 2D games for sure, but if you ever need a bit of variety, Kuru Nara Koi is always a cheap find. I have Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu and Shin Sedai Shuumei (the reboot) for PS1, and they're OK, but the Super Famicom titles are really in a class of their own. The final Goemon game on PS1, Ooedo Daikaiten looks promising, however. ;)

***** It's pretty fun...just short and kind of bland. It's definitely the worst Goemon game I've played, and I've played pretty much all of the major ones (not sure about the GB games).TBH, the dialogue here is a lot easier to follow than other entries in the series, I found. I think it's because most of the games have complete weirdos for enemy characters, and everyone here is pretty tame in comparison.

Ok, I am sadly not an importer myself but I do find the idea of importing games very appealing. The only Goemon games I have had the pleasure to play is the SNES and N64 games that got worldwide releases. I do love the games I have played in the franchise so I should give the Japanese games a shot, at least the once that can be played without the Japanese vocabulary. Maybe Goemon 2 on the Super Famicom.

***** Well, if you ever have any questions about imports/importing, ask away. And of course, I always encourage people to try new things in gaming, especially importing.Ganbare Goemon 2 for the SFC is pretty accessible for non-Japanese readers, and it's one of my favorite entries in the series. If you want to know more about it, I did a video on it a few months ago, which in my humble opinion, is one of the best videos I've put together. :)

I have seen the video, and I do have to agree that it is well put together. I have heard that if you snip away some pegs in the European SNES you can make it play Super Famicom games. If that is true then maybe I already have my ticket to Goemon 2 and import gaming in general.

***** Thanks--and as far as removing the tabs on you SNES...I know for sure you can do that with a North American model with no problem, as both Japan and N.A. use the NTSC video format...but with a PAL system, I am unsure that just removing the tabs without some sort of other conversion would work. I hope that's all you need to do, since there are a ton of great Japan-only games for the system.

@ImportGamingFTW 9 жыл бұрын
RarefoilB Hey, thanks for watching all of them, and I'm really glad you've taken an interest in the Ganbare Goemon games! (Mission complete!)If you were to start off, why not try Legend of the Mystical Ninja for the SNES? You won't have to worry about the language barrier, and I think it's a perfect entry title into the series. The good thing about Ganbare Goemon is that you can play pretty much any game in any order, and you won't have to worry about being left out in the storyline, since every game is pretty much its own contained narrative. TBH, I'd just recommend you buy all of the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom games, since those are the best games in the series. Let me know if you have any more detailed question and I'd be happy to try to help.

I just beat this one a few days ago! Even though I had it for more than 2 years... And I actually agree with you on pretty much everything. Many people say it's the worst of the series, and while it's certainly one of the weaker ones, the second Game Boy game (the one that got localized) is still far worse. I don't think it's a coincidence that these were the two Goemon games developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Nagoya. Anyway, I even kinda enjoyed this game, especially the first half. Going back to the mountain for the third time was starting to get annoying, and the maze where you had to collect the 12 Impact parts was easily the worst part of the game. Many people don't like the new style of Impact battles, but to be honest, I kinda liked the freedom in them, even if they were simplified overall. By the way, I'm playing Ooedo Daikaiten now (as I could finally get it! I only need to buy New Age Shutsudou to complete my Goemon collection), and I'm really loving it so far, even though it feels kinda like a... recycled (get it?) version of Ganbare Goemon 2 (SFC). The stages are really creative once again, the soundtrack is fantastic (even if half of it is just ripped from the N64 games), and I actually like the art style. The only thing that somewhat annoys me is the kind of strict time limit on stages. And I guess the load times could be a bit shorter, especially when I'm just entering or exiting a random house.
@ImportGamingFTW

Hey, I'm glad you finally decided to tackle this game. And I've actually been playing a little bit of Ooedo Daikaiten too, recently, to record gameplay footage. And LMAO, I was planning on using a similar joke about the game's recycling theme and recycling elements from other Goemon games. It's an excellent game from what I've played so far...though I've only spent a few hours with it, and have yet to try it in coop mode.

Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) I haven't tried the 2-player mode either, but I definitely will. I've finished the game since then, and it's become one of my favorires in the series. Just the day before you posted your review of Sarawareta Ebisumaru, I posted a written review of The Legend of the Mystical Ninja in Hungarian, and I made the same joke that they could've easily renamed Goemon and Ebisumaru Ching and Chong. :D You can imagine how surprised I was when I saw pretty much the same idea the next day.

I'm not even sure I'd seen it at that time, but now I remember that it was even more unbelievable to me because I kind of used the same situation of a Konami employee thinking about what kids knew about that sounded asian. :D My idea for why they named Ebisumaru DOCTOR Yang was about how he had blue clothes with a matching blue "hat" which made him look like a surgeon or something. And Seikushii Dynamites Arawaru is also like that, yes, although it's probably the least interesting of the bunch because of the screen size and hardware limits. Plus if I remember correctly, it reuses many stages and songs from Goemon 2, so it felt a bit stale. It was still cool to see Impact battles on az 8-bit system, though.

This is one of those game Series I'd like All the games to come out Everywhere sadly it won't at least not now but games from this series do you Recommend?

I would have a mini heart attack if a Goemon compilation was announced. As far as the games I'd recommend? Depends on your tastes. But the ones I can vouch for personally are any of the Super Famicom games, especially the first two, the two proper N64 games, Sarawareta Ebisumaru on the Game Boy, Ooedo Daikaiten and Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu on PS1, and even the reboot/remake Shin Sedai Shuumei on PS1. There are only a couple of games in the series I've played that I don't really like so much, to be honest.

Love me some Ganbare Goemon(Mystical Ninja)! Goemon should have been a smash character, not that...Street Fighter guy(though he's alright, I suppose)!

+Gxyz222 Yeah, it's a shame that the fan voting thing for Smash was more of a PR stunt than anything else. I'm not the biggest fan of SB Wii U, but I'd totally be down for some Goemon action, the Amiibo, and just seeing him in any other form besides mobile games and pachislot! XP

Man, sometimes it's hard to believe it's been nearly 6 months since your last Ganbare Goemon review, you know? I mean... I know that *I'm* acutely aware of this, but I figured that I'd just mention it... For no particular reason... ;)

Super Derek Man, I really would love to just do Goemon reviews...at this point, I think I own over half of the games, so I've got more than a few left in me. I'm thinking of doing a video on the first Game Boy game or the PS1 version of the reboot next.

Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) How about Ganbare Goemon DS? maybe it's one of my favorite in the series, I enjoyed the gameplay and the graphic design Also I laugh a lot with this game specially with the evil counterparts or some cameos like Goemon from New Age

Sokaris239 One of the problems that I have, and I'm guessing Jimmy has the same hangups with DS games, is that there's no inexpensive way to capture quality footage from a DS or 3DS. We could emulate the games, but playing without a touch screen won't give us a very accurate representation of the everyday gamer's experience. Otherwise we could point a camera at the screens, but that would look pretty terrible. Eventually I'll try to invest in a 3DS with a capture card which are very expensive, but in the meantime DS and 3DS games aren't a possibility. For me, at least.

Sokaris239 I'd love to do a video on that game, and have loved what I played of it so far, but SuperDerek RPG Reviews is right, it would be a pretty big investment to get a capture card for DS/3DS games, but not only that, it's a bit...sketchy. I really wish that Nintendo would add 3DS connectivity and Game Boy Player-esque support for the Wii U...I'd probably play that system a hell of a lot more if that happened, and a lot of folks would have the chance to share their thoughts on all the great games on the DS without having to just kind of talk at the camera.

Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) Ah-hah! I think you just stumbled upon why they haven't done it. Nintendo doesn't seem too keen on receiving feedback these days. As a matter of fact, I think they'd prefer their games remain a complete secret whenever possible.

I see the platforming is as amazingly...erm...fun as Super Mario 64. At least this game doesn't have so much slipping and sliding. Boy was that a frustrating experience in Mario 64.

As much fan as I am of the PS1 I have to say this game looks pretty dull. I understand now why Konami didn't bother to localize it. Why they even made it in the first place was because milking out of the series on the biggest selling platform was a cash grab for Konami. The dream team worked on N64 and that's why those games on N64 are much better and got a release outside of Japan. My favourite game in the series is still to this day Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon on N64. It was my first Goemon game ever so it has nostalgic memories.

TheGoldenPS1 I have to say I agree with what you have to say, but despite this game being pretty mediocre gameplay and design-wise, I like it for the narrative and the fact that it's a 3D Goemon on the PS1...though the N64 games are where it's at for 3D Goemon. Kuru Nara Koi is probably the worst Goemon game out there...which shows how much of a great series it is/was.

Goemon games were all better on the snes and n64 which think where they peaked! After that didn't seem know what hell do with the series, i never played 3 main cannon ps1's and 1 spin off used completely more realstic anime style! Note not refereing to ps2 game but Goemon: Shin Sedai Shūmei! which also ported to the ds.

siekensou77 Which one are you talking about? I know of four games, and it sounds like you're talking about Shin Sedai Shuumei, the futuristic reboot. I have it and I agree, it just doesn't do it for me like the Super Famicom games...though I think it's a decent title in its own right. Hate the art direction, though.

But til' this day japanese fans associate Konami brand with Suikoden. Is someone surprised? Suikoden fits on a powerful console, Goemon doesn't (proof? Goemon on PS2 was a clusterfuck).
@ImportGamingFTW
@ImportGamingFTW 9 жыл бұрын
TheGoldenPS1 Suikoden I & II are my favorite RPGs, and they're certainly games I associate Konami with, though I think most people these days would lean toward Metal Gear or soccer games. I hope that Konami doesn't go all pachinko/slots soon... And I own that PS2 game you mention...it's pretty bad/disappointing. I think there could have been a great Goemon game on the PS2 as long as it tried to stay true to the series, which it unfortunately did not.
