Dune fans and movie fans are clashing with the hardcore Lego fans who are mad that this isnt "true brick lego set but a disguised technic set". The Dune fans are just like: "And? The wings flap like in the movie!" lol

Everyone is complaining about the use of Technic, but I love it. Technic represents mechanical stuff in the LEGO world.

Agreed. To me it felt like classic Technic sets, the ones from the mid-late 90s, they still used a lot of System techniques and studded Technic beams to create a, mostly System compatibile, skeletal frame of the model and filled the interior with various mechanisms, with the intention being that you could see them in action. I much prefer this kind of approach than the current with almost full panel/fairing coverage. I really felt like building on of these classic sets when building the ornithopter, the only part that was overly mundane was building the wing roots, 8 very similar assemblies and then later building the wing connectors, yet another series of 8 subassemblies, but in the grand scope of things, it was a really only a tiny part of the overall experience. The instructions actually do quite a good job, alternating between System and Technic-based builds, to keep you engaged and interested throughout the entire process.

No, technic represents bionycle and other sets which are not really lego as the parts are super specialized.

@@Cortesevasive Not at all. Technics is the next level of Lego to inspire future engineers and also satisfy existing engineers as a hobby. Bionics was just a random marketing strategy. I personally love the cross over as a stepping stone for young ones to build more complex mechanisms.

I watched the first movie, so when Lego revealed this set I was completely blown away. It looks like the vehicle I remembered and functions like one. Made the first ever pre-order in my life. Would definitely relish the challenge of building this "technic" set.

Having just built it yesterday, the amount of engineering and gimmicks going into this build was mind-blowing. Having built hundreds of model kits in my life, this is hands down one of the most fun builds I've ever done. The decision to focus on the gimmicks and not the internal is, imo, a right one. The fact that you can hold the whole thing by its tail and press on the trigger to flap the wings or to collapse/expand them are just amazing. And that moving landing gears - icing on the cake. I was eating good and I am happy. 10/10. Worthy of Lisan al Gaib!

TIL, the most important test for a completed Lego set is... if you can hit someone with it like a club and it doesn't break too much.

The technicity of the building techniques were really refreshing. It's actually my first lego set for years and the first as an adult. I love the mixing of technique parts with regular parts. I built a lot of techniques sets during my childhood (10+ years ago) and I don't remember having so much fun with the mechanisms !

I liked a lot to assemble mine (I'm a Technic fan) , and WoW is the right word, when we deploy the wings it's ... magnificent . I like the old and the new Dune movies (and the games) , so having the Ornithopter (with all these functions) as part of my lego colection makes me happy :D

Thanks for sharing. Mine is on the way. I got it because it is Dune and I am a huge fan Also, because it is extremely unique, has a lot of minifigs, and looks to be a fun build.

It is a complex Technic build... that doesn't use a single cog. And honestly, I really don't see them cheapening out on the looks, I think this is more of a matter of chosen aesthetic with many studs and Technic beam remaining visible. And in terms of mechanical complexity, it has nothing on the Airbus helicopter you mentioned, that one is a nightmare of gearboxes and linkages that you have no idea how they work. Took me 5 days to build that one.

Building this atm, and i have to say that the build is not overly complicated or difficult. Yes I am a seasoned AFOL both classic and technic, but its a simple enough build (bag 7/10) however the work that has gone into it is amazing! and the designers deserve an award of some kind for the ingenuity

It’s the perfect combination for me! I like technic sets, but always feel let down by their finished appearance- especially with the expensive car sets like the Sian or the Bugatti. And equally am always disappointed by system builds where they prioritise looks over the durability of a set- I’ve modded a lot on my UCS ATAT to be more secure rather have pieces that will drop off at the slightest touch. This set to me is like the Classic Land Rover Defender set- a good marriage of both technic and system construction to make something that looks good and has some function!

Definitely going to pick it up eventually. I do agree about the red and blue technic as well I would have been happy paying more for extra pieces to cover the technic pieces but still an incredible build.

Mike that was great! It was a Wow Factor - was it a Cool Factor too!? I am both an AFOL and a Dune lover and I ordered mine in October - it was shipped this morning. I saw another review of the Technic build and I will be taking my time. I think it’s great value and I can’t wait.

I really don't mind a lot of Technic in a Lego kit, it allows for so much functionality and flexibility in the design. I do agree though that a few more pieces to make it look better wouldn't have hurt. Still I'm definitely thinking of getting it.

How many red/blue connectors are in there? Could they be replaced in grey and black?

I wish Lego made sand color base plates. I suppose they do make plates in that color so I might get some of those to display this set eventually. I think it looks better with the wings closed when it's displayed, but then you open the wings and it becomes an amazing thing to play with.

I canr get mt wings to do rhat im probably half done with building it but mine wont move an inch like 2 mm . And the back part to push down dosent have the movement yours does

I'm looking forward to putting this together. I'm a huge book nerd. I love the six book Dune series. It's one of my favorite book series of all time. I'm currently having a blast putting together a Lego Sand Worm. It came with the new Collectors Blu-Ray set of the Sci-Fi mini series Dune and Children Of Dune. My Ornithopter just came in the mail. I'll start that once I've conquered the Worm. Conquered Shai-Hulud.

I don't build Lego, not since I was kid - but I love Dune (the books) this set was easy. I don't know what you are measuring difficulty against.

Not for beginners that depends this is my first LEGO build since I was a kid in the 90s and I had a blast building it and no trouble at all… I have built scale models though so that experience probably transfers somewhat but really if you’re careful it’s time consuming but perfectly doable!

For me, the functionality built into some of the Icons sets is often the best bit. The DB5 being my favourite example of this.

Don't know about Dune, but the copter appears to have a grasshopper head, and a technic exo-skeleton for sure!

I think the main problem I have is the use of so many red pieces when black is available. Having said that, I have mine shipped, I will be doing pieces swap to black pieces :)

It's always good to hear different perspectives on LEGO sets. RacingBrick does a great job highlighting the build process. BrickFanatics does a great job discussing playability and value. You did a great job diving into the complexity and size.

Agreed. Also if you are going to build it there is a Lego Builder App. It's really for kids, but you can zoom into the step and see how the pieces fit much better than the instructions sometimes.

i don't get why anyone would say that this was a complex build. The plans are well made and I only had trouble when you needed to align 3 or 4 prongs to match their holes. Other than that the build was easy enough and I don't have 30 set build behind my belt at all.

I've never done technic in my life, but this wasn't so hard.. just stay focused, and don't rush the build. I don't mind the small red and yellow pieces either, think it lookes kinda cool

I'm half way through my set, but having trouble with the wing flapping. It doesn't function like how you've pictured it, I need to push the wing button at the back forward and backwards, I get almost no movement by pressing it

Same. One trick I tried is moving the rail piece back and forth a lot and then press hard on it up and down on it hard.

Since I'm mostly interested in it for display, the functionality doesn't excite me that much. Although I absolutely respect what the designer has done - seriously impressive functionality! This will, however, give me a starting point to try and alter the aesthetics. I completely re-built the Hulk-buster to fix those issues and had a blast doing it (My own - not Ransom Fern's version). So I'm hoping it will be fun to re-work this one. Meanwhile, it's exciting to have a Dune product from Lego!

The technic is genuinely not bad, if you are not used to building technic it is a great intro into it, and no where near as complicated as it can get. The mechanisms are awesome but not hard to put together at all. Dont let the mechanisms scare you away from what is easily the best set in the past few years imo (and im not even into dune)

I like this set a lot. But no word about the tendency of all wings to bend in one direction. So from the pilot's view wings on the right bend downwards, wings on the left bend upwards. That's a quality issue.

This set appeals to a certain kind of LEGO cusomer - the one that looks for "satisfying and mesmerizing mechanical operations". 110% would not have bought the set if the mech was removed and an "accurate" interior was added. Couldnt care less. Not sure if I would have bought the set if the landing gear or the wing folding mech was removed. But having both of those together, and the flapping as cherry on top. Sold. Now I'll be waiting another 20 years for a set as impressive as this.

I remember building the 8880 black technic car when I was 11yo, how tf adults complaining about making a 18+ Lego set that is made (pretty much) for us Olds. Very weird.

Mine arrives today, and I'm not planning on the original version having even a day on the shelf before making adjustments. Personally, I would've chosen aesthetics over functionality if I'd been allowed to design it. But I'll be curious to see if a compromise can be found without resorting to building a completely separate MOC. I look forward to the challenge regardless of the outcome, however - should be a fun puzzle. And I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what more accomplished builders than me can pull off!

For most people this set is quite stunning. Definitely not a beginner’s set with the technic system. I would’ve liked Sardukar figures or Beast Raban over the Baron. Gurney Halek is definitely the best figure in this set.

It misses the airy hoverfly like elegance as described in the Dune series. The cookpit looks to massive and boxy. The technical functionality is great though 😊

Price dropped really fast. I like it! But i geus people expected more of a display piece! But you can’t have everything! I think the impressive technical side makes up for it not being a very clean model. It’s not really a display set in the sense of a Star Wars ucs set. But again! I rather have the impressive mechanism this model has! It suits the set.

I thought I didn't like it either, because I felt like it was all so confusing. But I watched it again and it made so much more sense to me. You can't deny the VFX and direction is done very well in that movie.

I'm a big Dune fan, and I've built Lego sets, but not Technics ones, I'm waiting for the shipment with this set and we'll see if I cry with joy or sadness.
