** Specifications **
Overall length: 90 cm (35.4 in)
Blade length: 73 cm (28.75 in)
Blade thickness: 5.5 mm
Weight: 820 g (1.8 lbs)
Price: $415 (at Seven Star Trading Co.)
** Pros / Cons **
+ Sturdy, functional construction
+ Nice finish, beautiful decorations
+ Very sharp edge, excellent blade geometry
+ Light weight, well balanced
+ Remarkably comfortable grip
- Loosely fitted guard (can rotate a little)
- Tang thread sticking out past the nut (maybe just on this one?)
- Blade stains easily
** Verdict **
This is a well made, aesthetically pleasing reproduction of a liuyedao that works admirably for cutting practice. It's also one of the few reproductions of Chinese swords currently on the market that offer such high quality at a comparatively low price.
The fit could use some improvement but it held up well during the testing, and overall it's very easy to recommend this saber to anyone with an interest in Chinese weapons.

For me, the main reason why I'd pick collecting Chinese swords over Japanese swords is that those crafted by the Chinese just have a special artistic beauty in that they're not simply for killing but also something to admire and beautiful to look at, not to mention many just look so stylish and graceful.

@@DivineWindSerpent I need to tell you that since posting the above comment I have rethought my stance on Japanese swords, the massive Japanese odachi that was used primarily by Samurai cavalry has won favor with me, it probably is the most original sword of that variety given how Samurai mainly preferred fighting from horseback much less on foot (that was mostly archers and musketeers, the standard katana was used to a lesser degree and was mostly a last line of defense). I would certainly be honored to own one if I could afford it so hopefully this makes you feel a lot better.

Hi! Very interesting to see this sword again! I used to be a Huanuo dealer and I sold it many many years ago to an American customer. Since then I moved out of reproduction swords and only do antique Chinese swords now. The grip wrap and scabbard color were a custom job, done by me. That grip cord is high grade hand woven, naturally dyed cotton. (The original wraps they come with aren't that good, and often slip after some practice.) You're right, it's so fine it looks much like silk. I'm happy the grip held up so long! I'm sure the nut wasn't aligned in that way when I shipped it, I don't quite know what happened there. As for the staining, it's probably due to a pretty high carbon content in the steel which is probably also why the edge holds up so well. Antiques also stain like crazy, much more so than most reproductions. Really nice to see it ended up in good hands, and is still enjoyed and used!

Use it to cut through a Katana. Afterwards unscrew the pommel. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Liu Ye dao in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it. Nice video. Remember that China has 3 main groups. Manchurians, Hans and Mongolians. Each groups have different subgroups in them, difference of tribes or Clans. The Manchurians were the ruling party who has restricted the Hans and Mongolians for several hundred years when the European and Americans arrived at China in the late Qing Dynasty. A very brief explanation in the 3 groups would go as following. The Manchurians: Excellent administrators but extremely resistant to change and most obsessed with retaining traditions. They are decent warriors but what was terrifying is how good they are at organizing things and that was reflected in organized combat, their efficiency in managing resources until Empress Dowager Cixi went to fuck the Imperial Empire over and over with her stupidity. That and the Manchurian's innate fear of the monstrosities the Hans tend to produce in their free time. Mongolians: Excellent warriors, religiously very liberal group, take Genghis Khan for example has superhuman level of tolerance to religion that he even allowed missionaries from east and west to talk about their religion. Extremely poor administrators, poor organizers which didn't do well for being rulers. Nice folks to get smashed together with alcohol if you don't mind playing rough because they are tough people who can get rowdy. Hans: Excellent merchants, scientists and sages. Decent administrators, poor warriors, highly liberal and innovative. Han, Tang, Song and Ming Dynasties were run by the Hans. These are the times China's technologies made giant leaps. I mean in their quest to discover secrets of immortality elixir, they found Gunpowder instead. By 900 A.D. The Hans used Gunpowder in warfare in the form of Fire Lance which is a cheap spear with a fucking Bamboo container filled with gunpowder and some small rocks. They have a fuse coming out of the bamboo container. Range is short (About 10 feet max) but those were first time the Chinese ever used Gunpowder as weapons in warfare. By 1000 AD they produced the most primitive forms of Grenades. Hand thrown and lighter ones that is attached on Arrows. These are good candidates to get booze together if you don't play rough.

China and Japan are better described as master and disciple. China is an old, hefty martial artist. She had many students under him, but Japan was very quick-learning and liberal. She considered Japan, her most exceptional student, but Japan often slandered her old ways being traditional and ineffective. One day, Japan challenged China over rulership. China agreed with a faint smile. She beat Japan, making Japan respect China as a master, yet she was not sincere at heart. Years later, Japan dismissed her teaching, learning new techniques from foreign masters. Japan was now confident she would beat her.Japan rechallenged China. China, upon seeing the unfamiliar techniques was puzzled. Japan managed to beat up China, tainting her name into the abyss. This is their story.

When it comes to Chinese swords, in some martial arts flicks I've seen straight bladed jians being used as a main sidearm but in reality that was more of a gentleman's weapon and it saw little to no real use daily being mainly ornamental, the dao was the more practical sword for the soldier in the field.

@@simpleviewer1334 In the Three Kingdoms period, straight bladed swords were still the main sidearm for the warrior elite since the Qin and Han dynasties respectively. As time went on, the Imperial government found that it was much cheaper to produce curved blades for the militaries rather than straight blades which tended to be more expensive. General Cao Cao, I think, probably had the luxury of two jians given how rich and powerful he was, a simplified one for use on the battlefield and another fancier sword for special occasions and ceremonies.

One of my previous comments is apparently gone, I just wanted to say, when I was taught in the use of these kind of swords, my master Gabriel Soler Cueilli, told me that every bit of detail on it was made with a particular purpose and the reason why they never sharpened the other side of the blade is the technique of using it. In fact they use their left hand to push on the not-sharpened side of the blade to increase its speed and power. The Chinese swordsmen, while using these swords also used their left shoulder as a point of leverage to increase the cutting power. Each style has its own ways of using it, what I learned comes from a Kung Fu style called the Hung Gar, Tang Fong branch. Anyway, have a wonderful day, Skallagrim and keep up your amazing work man! Cheers!

I been practicing this particular kind of sword in a Kung Fu style called the Hung Gar Tang Fong, I just wish to say that there is a very good reason for the other side of the blade not to be sharpened in Chinese tradition and it is the technique of using the sword. By occasions the Chinese swordsmen apply a push by their left hand on the other (not sharpened) side of the blade to give it an extra boost in speed and power. Of course each style and each master has their own way of using it, but when I was first shown this kind of saber, my master, Gabriel Soler Cueilli, told me that every bit of detail is made for practical purposes and the reason for it not to be sharp on both sides of the blade being exactly what I mentioned earlier. I could not name a film, less even a scene from a film where they would show the use of it, but I am sure there have to be videos on youtube here, that one could find and where the forms for this sword are shown. In fact I will be looking for those right away :) Thank you for making this video Skallagrim!

Zhang Lee the point in sword making in Japan is mainly for cultural preservation. It's very unfortunate that the communist party hate ancient Chinese cultures so much that they decided to destroy every thing remotely related to culture during the cultural revolution, churches, temples,paintings,literature,old architectures. Don't you think it's weird that as a country with at least 4000 years of written history it would look more culturally intersting? look at Japan it's barely 2000 years old it looks so cutural! It's sad and scary how much a couple of years can wipe out entire cutural lineages of 5000 years. So sad that countries like Japan and Korea preserved so much more of ancient Chinese cultures than we actually do. Also yes in Japan almost everything from sword smithing and to architecture to language is heavily influenced by ancient China, especially Han dynasty.

Greetings skall! I practiced in several of the Chinese martials arts, sword play is a key point and the dao is an excellent example of the chineses choice of weapons (I also recommend the tiger hook sword) the dao is used with wrist flicks, free hand guide cuts, thrusts, slashes and deep well placed cuts. Try giving it a little (oh what do I call it) wrist windmill flick with about five to six inches of the tip of the blade. The wide edge surface really does a number with them. Hope this helps!

I prefer the variety in Chinese swords, since there's more than one type of sword, and katanas really just come down to varying lengths. I very much appreciate a well-crafted katana, and if someone gifted me a $1000 katana I'd probably be overjoyed. But like everyone, the rabid fantardism sorta killed most of the appeal for me.

Just as a little sidenote about that nut on the pommel, unscrew it to remove the pommel and you're in for a surprise. No not by "ending him rightly" but the fact that the outside nut is actually only there to lightly hold the pommelplate itself in place - not to tighten the handle. There's another nut for that under the pommel, which you use to tighten the grip.

Neoedu You have to remember the measurements (weights) were probably not standardized back in ancient china so any records would not match our current scales. The legend of Lu Bu also came from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms - a work of historical fiction that came centuries afterwards. Lu Bu probably just used a normal halberd like everyone else. *edited fiction to historical fiction.

It is actually only about 12kg... So many ppl believe it is 50kg(not 100kg) because it is really long 3.65 meters and Lu Bu was able to use it easily. In China there is a weight unit called 斤(jin), it is half of a kg.

@ChrisRobato
@ChrisRobato 5 жыл бұрын
@@adenyang4398 Not really, as all these sabers from China to Europe came from a common ancestral saber used by the Mongols and the Turks, who both fought both Chinese and the Europeans to great effect. The lineage of the traditional Han Dynasty Dao ended with the Japanese katana, and when the Dynasties moved from the Song to the Yuan, then Ming, the swords of the period also changed from the traditional Chinese daos to the Mongolic sabers.
@adenyang4398
@adenyang4398 5 жыл бұрын
Chris Robato It's a highly debatable topic actually. Sabre culture with the Avars/Magyars and the Byzantium paramerium is likely quite a bit older than the curved swords of Turks and Mongols.

There are two ways to fix the hand guard issue. You can fill the gap with a bit of epoxy (J-B weld). Use painters tape to damn up the blade side. Clean as the epoxy is setting. The other way is a little tricky. it involves solder and using a piece of brass cut like a graver to clean up the excess. There are some good solders with low melting points available that won't ruin the temper of the blade while applying it. Blade smiths used to solder on bolsters, but the clean up is tough so they have been switching to epoxy and pins.

So? Dao is just Chinese for any single-edge sword. This particular style of curved dao was copied from the nomadic cultures. Inventing a weapon doesn't mean much, what one does with it matters more. No one denies that Japanese swordmaking draws its origins from China, you're just looking for boogeymen to argue against.

@sapherno11 8 жыл бұрын
+Brian LO too much bend is a bad thing, as I'm sure your aware, since you know so much about metalwork (Not being condescending, I swear, I actually have not studied metallurgy.) Isn't that why blades are forged of different types of metal, to create a blade that Has that hard edge for the blade, and a softer metal along the spine, to prevent that hard metal from snapping? (again, I am not trying to be condescending, I am asking honestly, I honestly want to know)
@Lancaster604
@Lancaster604 8 жыл бұрын
sapherno11 I think you're talking about differential tempering. I'm not aware of a single sword having different metals for the spine and edge. I do know that if we cover the edge with clay then quench the sword , the edge will turns into a sort of hard martensite but the spine will be softer thereby giving you a resilient edge but also overall flexibility. I'm just an amateur hobbyist but I just didn't appreciate being "mansplained" that's all lol

actually that is not a sword, at least not to Chinese. in Chinese a sword is define as a double edge weapon. which we called "剑“ which is design to fit for multi purpose, they could bend to various angel pierce like a spear, hack and slash like a blade. The truth is, the sharpness of the sword doesn't matter, at least not too much. because when using such weapon you should not attack enemy's armor, you are meant to cut through the weak point instead.. human bodies is weaker then we expected, even a simple stick could be very deadly in the right hand. that is why Chinese martial art culture are mostly base on people, not the weapon. p.s. the japanese samurai blade was origin from Chinese Tang Blade.. if thats what you are looking for.

Sharpness don't matter?? That's the problem within Chinese martial arts circle, too many of us pay so much lip service to forms and lost focus on the actual weaponry that we become ignorant of it. There are historical texts that describes the quality of swords by testing how many layers of armor they can cut thru. Sharpness totally matters. You can't expect every soldier to skillfully aim for the wrists, neck, achilles heels

Even if a blade is highly polished, if there is not a lot of buffing done the surface will stain quite easily as the grain is a bit more "open". If you take the blade to a buffer with some green compound, you should be able to get rid of most of the staining problem although non-stainless will still need cleaning/oiling.

My TFW swords do the same thing. I recently did a test cut through a 50 ounce water bottle with my Minasbad, which was just sharpened professionally. It was actually designed with a Dan Dao in mind, but with Filipino influences. Anyhow, I ended up with some discolored spots, which I tried to polish out, but to no avail. I was able to scratch them out. It was the spots, or the scratches, & you can only see them by closely examining it. I also have 1 spot on my Northern Sansibar, which I've used recently again, & I guess I dried it off quick enough this time, because there aren't any new discoloration spots.

About the rust issue- it's probably because the blade is in direct contact with bronze. When 2 dissimilar metals are in contact the more active of them (in the case- steel) corodes faster than normal and protects the less active one (bronze) from corossion.
