Interesting module, I've never used the Apparatus but I remember it well from the DMG back when it first came out. The artifacts list with their plug'n'play abilities lists always hinted at the deeper mysteries of the implicit setting buried in the original rules. I followed the affiliate link but it dropped me to the DTRPG page which doesn't have a purchase option (maybe just my setup?) If I go to the Dungeon Master's Guild page it shows the purchase option normally. "...and stay safe from Pinkertons", LOL Chances of a gamer being brutalized by WizBro's Pinkertons are low, but never zero...

Personally, I kind of enjoyed the idea that Kwalish was inspired to create his techno-magic inventions after his own exploration of the starship in the Barrier Peaks. His use of artificing is also where I have rock gnomes develop their separation from the forest gnomes; as they follow the teachings of Kwalish and become tinkerers. But, eh... personal choices.

I'm not a fifth edition d&d system but I can appreciate this video. If I were to pick it up I would definitely convert it to 1st edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.

I used this adventure to reintroduce the crashed spaceship to my campaign world and kwalish became a major patron for the group for the rest of the campaign (which was ToEE and then against the giants). Though I loved his lab to the moon instead of an extra dimensional space. Great little adventure.

Would love to see POD Greyhawk adventures from you. I think that is one way to keep Greyhawk alive is for developers like yourself to make compelling adventures for the setting.

You'll find a number of POD adventures on the BRW Games online store (store.brwgames.com). My Greyheim Adventures line will fit nicely into that setting, by sheerest coincidence.

I ran this adventure because I wanted one of my players, who plays a "living suit of armour" (aka warforged) artificer to find his origins. I had set up that Kwalish was the original artificer (I think in Greyhawk he was wizard?) As such I wanted the party to find a crashed city-sized UFO a la Expedition to the Barrier Peaks but didn't want to run that (this was mean to be a personal side quest). Overall, the adventure was okay and the lack of battle maps made me have to spend a lot of prep time getting maps for each section. The maps supplied were eh (grey scale illustrations of the city rather than a top-down view). I can't complain it was a big waste of money since it went to a charity.

I don't much care for the spaceship myself (and prefer to interpret it as some Gith-esque artifact), but if a space ship has actually crashed into some mountains, I dare say that would be a pretty defining feature of said mountains lol. Even in our technological era we would go absolutely bonkers over it.

Am I misremembering that Kwalish originated in TIm Kask's Carbondale campaign?

True. Kask says Brian Blume needed a BBEG for his campaign on the fly so he passed off the NPC. Gygax put him and Vecna in the DMG from Blume's campaign. During the Williams era, people at TSR got the notion that everything in the DMG was from the Greyhawk setting, but neither were Greyhawk characters. Of course, nobody at WotC knows that or anything else about D&D.

I'm curious why you said that the 5th Edition era is winding down? Do you say this because of WOTC's recent mishandling of D&D (licensing debacle, censorship, etc.)? Because while all that probably has driven away some customers I still think there's enough people out there who support it. Or is it that WOTC seems like they might be exploring a new edition (One D&D)? Personally I'm confused by One D&D. It's supposedly compatible with 5E so is it really a new edition? Or just a chance for WOTC to do more censorship and/or push people to their digital platform(s)? Or is there some other reason?

I'm referring to the transition from the current 5E to "D&D Forever" (or whatever it ends up being called; 5.5, 6E, etc.). I've frankly heard those claims of backwards compatibility before (remember when they said you would be able to play characters made with 1E, 2E, 3E, 4E, and 5E together at the same table?). While the changes might not be as drastic as we've seen between, say, 4E and 5E, any sort of change necessarily creates a divergence between editions, and as those changes accumulate, cross-compatibility goes down.

I've come to associate 5th Edition with painful mediocrity over time. Interesting to see something pretty decent, even though there's peak WotC races nonsense.

My group still plays first edition. We have tried others, but we have gone back to first edition.

Yeah I don't like it either. But I've never been a big fan of the spaceship either. I try to keep my D&D separate from my Star Wars campaign...but thats just my OCD. ;)
