The Finnish Defence Forces are the military of Finland. The Finnish Defence Forces consist of the Finnish Army, the Finnish Navy, and the Finnish Air Force. In wartime, the Finnish Border Guard becomes part of the Finnish Defence Forces.
Universal male conscription is in place, under which all mentally and physically capable men serve for 165, 255, or 347 days, from the year they turn 18 until the year they turn 29. Alternative non-military service for men and voluntary service for women is available.
Finland's official policy states that a wartime military strength of 280,000 personnel constitutes a sufficient deterrent. The army consists of a highly mobile field army backed up by local defence units. The army defends the national territory and its military strategy employs the use of the heavily forested terrain and numerous lakes to wear down an aggressor, instead of attempting to hold the attacking army on the frontier.
Finland's defence budget for 2022 equals approximately €5.8 billion. The voluntary overseas service is highly popular and troops serve around the world in UN, NATO, and EU missions. With an arsenal of 700 howitzers, 700 heavy mortars and 100 multiple rocket launchers, Finland has the largest artillery capability in western Europe. Homeland defence willingness against a superior enemy is at 83%, one of the highest rates in Europe.
The Finnish Defence Forces cooperate closely with the Finnish Border Guard. The Finnish Border Guard has its own yearly and long term investment budget.

Would be nice to have some explanation to every piece, especially the Russian stuff like BMP armoured vehicles, and not just the names read from a list. Also "KTM" is not the whole distinction of that motor cycle, just the Austrian brand that makes it. Also, where are small arms and personal equipment? And how about using photos of the actual Finnish equipment rather than stock pictures of museum pieces with other nations' emblems on and random shots of civil trucks on the road?

We cannot provide more details because creating such lengthy videos would increase the duration by at least 10 times, and our resources do not allow us to produce such long videos every week. However, we hope to be able to make such videos in the future. You can see an example on our channel about the US Marine Corps. Regarding KTM motorcycles, sometimes we talk about a specific company because the military uses various models from this brand. As for small arms, it's difficult to find real information about them because it's usually not disclosed in procurement reports. Additionally, KZfaq dislikes videos about firearms, posing a significant risk of being blocked. Regarding the use of photos of equipment from other countries, military technology is a sensitive topic worldwide, and it's nearly impossible to find photos of most equipment, especially engineering and support equipment that is not showcased in parades. But we do everything possible to show photos of this country to the maximum extent. If you have seen our video about the Chinese army, it is one of the most closed countries on this topic, and we spent over a month searching for and processing scarce photographs to provide the most truthful information possible.

Finland defends itself in the forest and under difficult natural conditions. It has never been easy for the Russians. And to be honest, it wasn't easy for the Americans in Vietnam either. Finland is difficult to conquer, and there is hardly anything to be gained.

Doubt that even if you were in tank company that you would have seen all Finnish Leopard tanks at once or that they would have told you if the real number was much larger than the official number of 200 tanks...im sure Finnish Defense forces are keeping many things secret from public, but it would make no sense to downplay our official numbers because we would want to have as strong/big threshold as possible for Russia not ever even consider attacking us and if we would downplay our official numbers, it honestly doesnt make any sense

Finland doesn't need an ocean-going navy. A coastal navy with small vessels is suitable for our needs. Also if you look at the map, you'll notice, that the land-based anti-ship systems reach far from the Finnish shores - and can e.g. block the Gulf of Finland. At the end of the video were the equipment on order/being built. That includes also the 4 Pohjanmaa-class multirole corvettes, which just as well could have been classified as frigates, because they are 117 m and 4,300 tons. A couple of coastal submarines would be nice though.

Your listing sounded interesting, but turned away my interest. Firstly, the entire Finnish civil boat and auto fleet will be subject to immediate military use. Your endless listing of those painted olive or navy gray is not significant. Secondly, combat vehicle counts are only relevant if presented with their Table of Organization tactical and administrative units. That would have rewarded my curiosity. Too bad.

Its still far more than what most European countries have. Plus the Finnish-Russian border terrain isnt well suited for tanks, if Russians were to ever attack Finland, they would likely try to avoid lot of the most difficult terrain (forests, lakes, swamps) and just try to come at us from the roads and so we dont really need thousands of tanks for the length of the whole border. Plus the war in Ukraine has showed that tanks have limited use in war today, and artillery is and airforce is much more important

Right now neither Russia or Ukraine can achieve that because neither has strong enough airforce against the opposite side's anti air defense. Its also why Finland spent billons to renew our F18s with F35s, strong airforce is one of strongest deterrances a nation can have

Most of it has been replaced by now. Lot of soviet era stuff was shipped to Ukraine as they can use it as is, even with modern upgrades.

Ye lot of it was acquired from former Warsaw pact countries after Cold War, some directly from Soviet Union. But much of its has been replaced already, like K9 Thunders replacing those old Soviet era tracked howitzers. Our BMP2-s just went through modernization so I think those will still be in use for quite some time

@@Balnazzardi Actually, the bulk of the existing ex-Soviet stock comes from Germany, as in former GDR Volksarmee surplus. Germany makes matters difficult for itself by imposing strict conditions on arms exports, and Finland proved very helpful in taking the stuff off their hands without causing any moral dilemmas. The same applied to Sweden, which fielded BMPs for a while. The same phenomenon worked to Finland's advantage when the Dutch foolishly sold their perfectly-serviceable Leopard 2A6s for a pittance. It's interesting that I probably trained as a Dutch 'Pantsergrenadier' alongside the very same Leopards. The next time I saw them was in Parola, where I reported for a refresher, but this time as Finnish reservist.

@@peabase well ye lot of that stuff was bought from former East Germany stockpiles, you are right. But ye basically I meant the same by saying from Warsaw Pact countries 😄 anyway we got lucky once with Leo 2A6s but next time we are buying main battle tanks, we wont be so lucky as no one in Europe will sell their tanks to us with such good deal. So better to invest for best possible versions of Leopards as entirely new, straight out from the factory order. Our old Leo 2A4s can still be useful but at some point they need to be replaced by more modern versions

Uhm, all the equipment works and is still relevant in modern warfare, artillery especially like seen in the Ukraine war, this dude also left so much out of this video, alot of the coastal guns and such is left out, because it's not public information, nobody knows how much they actually have. We also just purchased the davids sling anti missile system, over 300+ million dollars, the best in the world, produced by USA and Israel. But maybe we should ask for plasma cannon too.

L'armée finlandaise c'est 34.000 hommes dont 3.000 aviateurs et une poignée de marins sans bâtiments de haute-mer. Le gros de la force (30.000 hommes) appartient à l'armée de terre et arme 8 petites brigades qui représentent 1 division OTAN et demi. In WW2, Russia learned the hard way that Finland is poor tank country. There are just too many chokepoints that are easily mined. MBTs serve a more defensive purpose. I suppose defence in depth means nothing to you.

Yeah well, Finland has more tanks than the UK does and if we take into consideration the fact that 90 percent of Finnish terrain is impossible to move on with tanks, that is actually a fuckton. That's why we have to rely on other stuff, like artillery and soldiers. So thats why we have mandatory service and the largest artillery capability in western europe.

Uh, check out the reserve. 870,000 trained reservists. With the possible exception of Israel, no other country can rely on such a massive defence force, adjusted for population size.

Oh my fucking god. The ignorance is shining through buddy. Finland highly relies on civilians in war, which is why we have mandatory service, every man needs to serve in the finnish army. Almost 1 million reserve of trained soldiers shows this.
