I taped a small earth magnet to the inside of the lid and attach the washer to the lid top. It is very tight and hasn’t moved at all when in my pack. I still carry an extra washer as a safeguard.

Great idea! Love this idea and may give it a try.

I wear dog tags - USGI tag, light, whistle. Easy enough to add a washer.

Last year, I camped near a guy that had one of these but lost his coin so I gave a quarter so he could open it. A couple days later, he lost that coin! I'm going to get one myself but plan on using a fender washer so I can use a cord and wear it around my neck or attach it to pack or something like that.

You can use a key or your titanium spork in a pinch.

Seems like trying a washer to the box is safest bet

I keep a quarter in a pack pocket but I always carry an Esee 3 knife with me and has been my best opener. As another commenter noted, you can use your spoon/spork but I keep mine in my can so not an option for me.

Um...try turning it sideways as it is wider than it is tall...so flat part of bottom or top of can is against your back and fits in pack better. Inch less this way.

"I find it difficult to open the Bear Vault ..." Sir, are you sure that you are not a bear? Seriously though, I appreciate the review. Was looking into replacing my old BV450 but the price of the Bearikade is putting me off just buying it without doing any research first. Just out of curiosity, what backpack are you using? It looks like a ZPacks model.

In the morning if it is cold the plastic is hard and my hands are cold it is not the easiest to open the old BV. Yeah, the Bearikade is pricey for what it is. When I actually went to weigh it there isn't a lot of weight savings either. Yes, that is a Zpacks Arc blast backpack. That thing is light and carries so comfortably.

I keep a spare washer tied on my backpack and one attached to my knife.

Thank you for the video sir! If I may ask, about how many days worth of food can you hold in the one you have? We are hiking the JMT in August and we are considering this can. I just don’t want to buy an overly bulky can that will take up extra space, as well as something that isn’t able to hold the adequate amount of food we will be carrying. Thank you for your insight!

BV450 spec weight is 33 ounces. The bearikade weekender spec weight is 31 ounces. "Half the weight" isn't quite accurate though you get a little more room and a little less weight so maybe it evens out. I carry the BV500 but I'm considering getting the expedition for the added capacity.

Thanks for your comment above. I absolutely stand corrected! It isn't that much lighter. I have a BV450 and the Bearikade Scout and weighed them both. BV450 - 959g and the Bearikade 804g. As you point out the Bearikade does have more room for that weight. For weekend trips both are overkill for one person.

For a solo overnight or 2, you could go with a Bare Boxer. Its smaller and lighter @ 1.6 lbs and also the price is right @ $75.

@@dirtbagoutside I have a bare boxer, more than enough space for a weekend trip. Even for 2 people you can make it fit if you repackage your food and avoid big things like ramen noodles in a cup. Don't forget you can pack your first day of food outside your pack and eat it before you go to sleep. I don't think this carbon bear can is worth it vs. the bv450 if you only save 2oz. For $330 you can buy a new tent (xmid2) or close to a new quilt (katabatic flex 30) and save a lot more space and weight. If you make a spread sheet of grams saved / dollar for all your gear vs. best in class you will find that carbon bear cans have pretty much the lowest grams saved / dollar. Tent, sleeping bag, pad, backpack have the potential for the most grams saved / dollar.

The higher the volume of the Bearikade the better the volume to weight ratio.

Not half the weight of a BV450. It is 28 oz and the BV450 is 34 oz, so just 6 oz lighter.
@Andy-Mesa

It is not half the weight of any BearVault. You're saving 6-10 oz from a 34-40 oz container.

While I do carry a small pocket knife it is not so convenient as I have it in my first aid kit. I wanted to have something that is always right there when I need it.

It amazes me that anyone would complain about using a knife or a a spork to open these containers. There really is no manhood left in America. How did you ever manage to go out in the woods with all the scary bugs? Forget about a bear.
@lornecheese
@lornecheese Жыл бұрын
Not sure how complaining about opening these relates to manhood. I go out in the woods all the time and have done so in grizzly country as well with no weapons whatsoever. The only knife I carry is a very small pocket knife that is buried in my first aid kit. Not bragging but just saying manhood and being scared of bugs has nothing to do with it and feel that your comment is rather inflammatory.
