Excellent tarp for all seasons and multiple uses.

Putting the ridgeline loops of the tarp, perpendicular to the paracord you'll be able to pull the sides out which give even more room inside the shelter. The Free Soldier tarp isn't too shabby - I have another more costly tarp so I was very tough on the Free Soldier not too tough though - It is indeed a good tarp -

I LIKE this idea.... if it ever stops raining where I live (on the weekends), I am going to give this setup a try and do a video on it.

Well, 10'x10' square trps are pretty much the standard for their coverage & versatility. Most tarp light weight camping manufacturers makes at least one ripstop nylon version in that size. Many make them in different weight fabrics. DD Tarps for example have their superlight range to complement their more robust range & there are even ultralite or emergency one use options. So why do you think this is the best option among the many available? It does not appear to have the many tie outs that most tarps of this size have for the many & versatile setups that are appropriate to varied weather conditions. You can for example do fully enclosed pyramid setups, with or without a floor, plow point, and even a tent like setup with a minimalist entrance, but the choices are almost endless, depending on available tie out points for versatility. Of course you can add your own tie outs, even impromptu ones with cordage & a smooth stone, but it's nice to have a grid of tie outs already there. So whats so great about this particular brand? I had a look at their website & it's not even a square tarp, 126" x 118" & that limits the setups you can do with it.

Let's put it this way.... it is the best I have tried thus far. It is fairly light, easily deployed, durable and inexpensive. However, your insights are not without merit. As I have opportunity to acquire and try other tarps, I do not discount that my assessment could change.

Just because it's has loops, don't need to use them. Just throw the tarp over it and just use two prusik knots. Much faster setup.

Good point, but using the loops will "help" keep rain from running in on the line from the outside.

@@CowboySurvival On tarps without so many tie out loops, when I run the ridgeline inside I tie little "drip strings" on the ridgeline near each entry point into the tarp. This effectively stops the rain water from following the ridgeline into the tarp, which could cause dripping inside. I've tested this during very heavy rain for days, and the ridgeline stayed dry inside the tarp. Thank you for this video. I have the same tarp and like it for its durability and rain proof quality. It's only 1/2 pound heavier than the DD tarp version in a similar size (nice tarp), seems more robust and is roughly half the price. If I get more into lightweight backpacking, I may get a lighter tarp, but this one would be the workhorse sparing the other for occasional use. It's strange that it's slightly not square, but I've tried many setups and it seems to setup the same as those advertised as square, including the Plow Point.
