Howdy from Dallas, Texas. I am Ray, the owner of Hike-ALOT and also co-owner of the Texas Survival School. I am a certified hiking guide and wilderness survival instructor with up to date credentials in Leave No Trace, CPR/AED, and Wilderness First Aid.
The Hike-ALOT school itself was born as an avenue to give students from the wilderness survival school and my frequent day hiking companions, make the jump from day hiking to overnight backpacking. The name itself is a reference to where our students come from - Arkansas(A), Louisiana(L), Oklahoma(O), and Texas(T). That is why it is “ALOT” instead of “a lot”.

Thanks. Awesome review. You covered details that other reviewers didn’t mention. Especially with set up expenses. My 20 year old daughter likes to wander around the Idaho countryside & this will ease some of the worries.

I started looking for a comms/navigation (GPS) system, thanks for the review. When it comes to navigation, I'm just old school and use map and compass, but people keep telling me that I need to get electronic tools. But I don't know... Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family as well!!

I was looking for a little more flexibility in the comm options - the Garmin inReach fits the bill for me perfectly… (first a mini, now a mini 2…)

Yeah it’s all about finding the one that meets your need. The biggest thing I think is that everyone really needs to carry one regardless of which one it is. Too many people getting into too many bad situations lately. Thanks for watching.

For My version the orange cover of the SOS button immediately broke off. When I ask for a new model and showed purchase they only offered help if I bought a yearly protection plan. That orange strip is not be used much but it is made of too fragile a material. I bought a garmin that is more expensive but better made and also adds the ability to message

Great no frills review. This device seems rugged simple to use and in a very good price range. One question is there’s an activation fee and a flex plan fee. If one uses the flex plan are both fees charged if we turn the device off during non use?

It cost about $100. I think the activation is just once not every time you restart the monthly fee. Maybe I am wrong about that.

I have the INREACH MINI I STILL HAVE Activated it yet I’ve had it for like two years it sits in my drawer As many crazy trails as I go to I should probably have it on cause I go to a lot of remote places

Hi, ive read reviews of people saying reception is not good. In its ad it says that needs to be on an open space to get receptipn (?) What has been your experience regardong reception? Have you tested it? Im so curious! Thanks ❤

I can only base my opinion on my experiences and so far I’ve been quite pleased. Any satellite tool is going to be subject to reception restrictions whether it be trees or down in tight canyons. The screen prints from the video around the 6:13 mark are from a very heavily wooded area. You will notices a few gaps where the pin drops are a bit further apart and those are areas when it searched a bit more for a signal. I’ve never had instances when a message didn’t get out but it does occasionally take it a little bit to do so.

Do you have to push a button to start tracking after you have been still for five minutes or more?

5 minutes no but the device will turn off after an hour of inactivity to save battery life. You have to turn it back on then.

Can you explain this? What do you mean by inactivity? I was out riding a motorcycle and when I got back to the truck, the device had shut off. If you are dropping waypoints is that considered activity and will it stay on for longer than an hour? Thanks.

How do you select which custom message you want to send?

The message is set inside the app and from the device when you click the custom message button it sends whatever is set. You can’t toggle between multiple custom messages.

@@Hike-ALOT so I assume you would sync with it out in the field with blue tooth so you can change your preset messages.

No it does not Bluetooth to the phone. You preset what you want to sit before departure or you can change it if you have a data signal but that defeats the purpose.

I think you explain the monthly/flex plans wrongly no? With the flex you pay only the activation once and you pay the yealy amount of 34.95 regardless if you are using it or not. Then you can activate or not any month you want and you pay 14.99 for the months you activate it, you dont need to pay the activation fee everytime.

I don't like it because you have to use a tool to get to the batteries! The Spot Gen 1-3 had D-Rings on the 2 screws!

Ah see I didn’t like the D rings personally. To me they seemed to catch on things and I didn’t mine a few simple flat head screws.

I'm guessing the Spot gave you this device to review because it does not work as advertised. It will not send text to contacts and it will not send a link to them so they can track your location. What it will do is allow you to, when you get back home see where you were...sometimes. I am just glad I never ended up in a situation where I needed the SOS function because I really do not trust this device or any of the reviews. After years in the outdoors this is a device that just takes your $150 for the annual fee and does not provide anything in return. As far as contacting the company...good luck with that. An hour on hold and I had to get back to work.

No SPOT did not provide that item to me to review. I purchased it with my own money and use it without issue monthly for the last 3 years. That is not at all the experience I’ve had with mine at all. I wonder if you received a defective one. Mine has worked wonderfully.

The product listing I found for this was misleading and mentioned nothing about the subscription and activation fee. Customer service was awful and I will be returning the product and telling everyone I can about how little this company cares about customers.

Sorry to hear you had issues with them. I’ve had nothing but good luck with them but also haven’t had to contact them in two years. I’m pretty sure you’re going to find that all of these require a subscription. If you find one that doesn’t I would love to know what it is.

@@Hike-ALOT my issue isn't so much with the fact that subscriptions are part of it, but that it wasn't clearly disclosed. I am not an outdoorsy person and purchased this for my kid. Nowhere in the main description of the item did it mention a service was required, otherwise I wouldn't have purchased it. Also, turns out what I was looking for is a personal locator beacon.

@@deeh5126 I wish I have read your comment before I purchase one of this. I was shocked that I have to pay for subscription and I totally agree with you that is was clearly disclosed. There is also a rush for you to activate which means you have to purchase a plan to get it working.

This is useless it’s cover protecting the sis button failed immediately / broke in two. Made almost of wax!!!! They refused to repair replace or replace the part without a $50 fee!!!! Terrible don’t buy
