I just bought the same 6HP after a lot of searching... mostly for the same reasons as you gave. I like the transmission over the 3.5 lighter motor as well as the exhaust through the prop. I broke it in properly and it runs well on my 8.5' inflatable. I did not get any instructions or directions... so I am thrilled with your review and help. Thank you for posting!! I find it is running rough, but I think I had the air vent closed. I opened the tank gas cap and tried to turn it, but it seemed stuck. I didn't want to break it. I'll try it again and report back on the roughness. So far, I am very pleased and my dog likes it much better than the electric Torquido I test rode. The poor dog couldn't stand the noise of the electric motor. This Tohatsu lulls her to sleep in comparison. Steve... well done and again, thank you.

Thanks for watching! It is a very good and well designed motor! Keeping the fuel supply steady is very important based on my experience. Less than 1/2 gallon, or too high pressure inside on a hot day will make it unstable at near full throttle. Let me know how it goes after you fix the air vent. Mine went super good once I released the pressure inside the tank. 😎

You can still add an external tank to the internal tank version. Having the internal tank can provide extra fuel for your trip, and can provide another source of fuel (let's say your external tank stops working out on the water, the internal tank is there to get you home). Also for short boat adventures, no need to bring an external tank (saves weight and space in boat). BUT, internal tank comes with other risks - possibility of fuel spill if the tank cap fails when outboard is laying on its side.

Greetings friend, still having luck with your Tohatsu? I actually ordered one tonight for my 12 foot jon boat. I also got the 6 to replace my venerable old Johnson 6. She was starting to show her age unfortunately. I've heard these Tohatsu's are the Toyota of outboards and was the reason I picked one up. Probably wont live long enough to put 300k miles on it like my Corolla though! 😆

I have the same exact motor, I agree about the paint job, i just touch it and it flakes off. Question, Have you been having any problems with the motor just shutting off when using? I did my break in period and in the process the motor would just shut off and die like it was out of gas. Then i couldn't get it to start for 1/2 hour. Oil level is good, primer bulb at the time was a little soft. Tank was vented by opening the gas cap in my portable tank.
@SteveChenFishing
@SteveChenFishing 2 жыл бұрын
How much gas do you have in the tank? I found somewhere around 1/2 gallon makes the engine unstable. If you can’t start it, usually it’s flooded. Try no choke full throttle and ready to turn it down. It should be able to start. Usually I have unstable combustion as well when the internal pressure is very high (hot summer day). When I open the cap of the tank the pressure releases, it turns back to normal. It has to be the cap, not the little valve on the cap. (The high pressure issue only affects high throttle). Let me know if you can solve your problem by full throttle start, good luck!

Do you have any opinion on fish finders and whether theyre needed? Are you using any fish finders?
@SteveChenFishing
@SteveChenFishing Жыл бұрын
Sure you should have one if you have an outboard. First and foremost, it’s for the depth chart/map, to avoid hitting on underwater rocks that’s hard to see. Second if you know how to read it especially side imaging, it can help you locate more fish. I like the Garmin Echomap UHD 73SV or 93SV. As introduced in one of my other videos.

If you shut off the gas from the gas container and let the remaining gas burn off in the motor, why would you drain the carburetor? Doesn’t it automatically burn all out when the gas is done? Am little confused. Thx
@SteveChenFishing
@SteveChenFishing 11 ай бұрын
Even after burning at neutral gear, there’s still a bit left. It’s generally ok for the boating season. But for winterization, pls drain all the gas in carburetor. That remaining gas after burning.

My new 2023 6hp tohatsu started to sputter, or bog down, loose propulsion to 0 when running at high rpms, ton of suggestions could not fix this problem, i always run idle to dry after each use and not sure what had happened to this brand new motor, at first i thought propeller needs to be changed, but after changing propeller problem remained, it started happening after i took it to the ocean, i cleaned it with fresh water after, so not sure what could be the issue

@SteveChenFishing
@SteveChenFishing 11 ай бұрын
Suzuki is lighter. If that means a lot for you. I changed spark plugs for a few Tohatsu outboards 6 and 9.8, it’s very easily accessible. When I did the 2018 20 hp Suzuki, I was so glad that I have skinny fingers. My friend couldn’t even reach the spark plugs… I don’t think you could go wrong with either one. Take a look and check how easy/difficult it it to service it by yourself and I think you’ll have a decision. Good luck!

Came back n motor shut down and not starting, cables warped, throttle cables warped, cleaned carb, nothing helps motor is not starting, and we dont have much tohatsu dealerships in our area, one that we do have has crazy long waiting line, DO NOT BUY. Spent $1500+ from online outboards
