Defunct Games reviews the new fighting game Phantom Breaker: Omnia, available now on PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One and PC.
Coming to the West for the first time in more than a decade, Phantom Breaker: Omnia proves to be worth the wait. With gorgeous graphics and wonderfully detailed character designs, this one-on-one fighting game hasn't missed a beat in the last ten years. The simple yet effective gameplay makes the game more accessible for casual fight fans, all while giving the hardcore enough depth to keep them coming back for more. Best of all, the lengthy story mode has been completely translated and features a choice between Japanese and English voice acting. Unfortunately, the game has a bad habit of hiding a lot of useful information and the online netcode can be a little iffy, but gamers who have been waiting all this time for Phantom Breaker to finally come West won't be disappointed by Omnia.

... the only 2d fighting game I was ever good at was killer instinct on the SNES. I could finish it with the boxer without losing :)

This one does look like a bunch a fun, would have to check it out. As for the question, I'm going to go with Terrordrome Rise of the Boogeymen. First heard of it from a Let's Play from Doctor Wolfula, but it is fun. Granted probably would always be a free to play, due to all the copyrights they would have to get to sell it, mainly because it is horror movie icons fighting head to head, but if you wanted to see who would win in a battle of chainsaws between Leatherface and Ash Williams, or Freddy VS Pinhead, or Jason VS Michael Myers, this game got you covered. I've not played the sequel they got in development yet, Terrordrome Reign of Legends, but curious about it. That sounds like much of the same, only cheaper copyrights involved, like Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster, so they are selling it on Steam.

For favorite 2D fighter... I guess I need to say Smash Bros. Yes, I know, it's also simple to learn, but I had more fun with that than any other fighter I ever sampled. I'm also one of those who has a really hard time remembering and pulling off combos, so I never got into most fighting games to begin with.

QOTD: I honestly have too many to pick, there’s the robust library from SNK, the flashy anime air-dashers from ArcSys, the oft forgotten games in capcom’s back catalogue that I cannot stress enough for your viewers to buy the capcom fighting collection for Darkstalkers to gain a second chance at (re)life… but if I were to pick just one that’s my favorite of all time, that’ll have to go to capcom vs snk 2

Every time Capcom re-releases DarkStalkers on a new system, I always get my hopes up that they'll give us a proper sequel. Yet, they never do. They are so committed to Street Fighter (and, for a while, Marvel vs. Capcom) that they completely ignore one of their best fighting franchises. You would think they would make a new DarkStalkers just to try out new mechanics and sell more DLC. They could even tie it into some of their more serious horror games, like Resident Evil. It seems like a no-brainer to at least test the waters. Maybe one day they will.

You said this comes with most modes you'd find in a modern fighter. This game has more modes than any modern fighting game lol. Tekken 7 doesn't even have time attack and endless mode here is basically treasure battle. As for arcade mode here its long and an actual arcade while Tekken 7 is 4 or 5 fights and then a black screen with credits, literally zero story of any kind. The laziest arcades in the history of arcades and that includes older bad ones from indie fighters so that's saying alot on how a AAA fighting game went to complete trash in recent times. They even had the gull to sell people a game mode and sell frame data ontop of a $60 price tag. So honestly this game has more content than Tekken 7 on release and after 5 to 6 years of Tekken 7 being out they just now have enough content to consider it a complete game but you still have to spend $120 for the complete version...I hate modern fighters. Might look into getting this one and supporting it than trash like Tekken 7 until they go back to any Tekken before that which were great entries or just keep playing better fighters like Skullgirls.

I will admit that I have not played Tekken 7, so I'll take your word on it. I was just saying that it has a lot of the usual suspects when it comes to modes -- like time attack, survival, arcade, etc. With the addition of the story modes, you might be right that Phantom Breaker: Omnia has more modes than most.
