This is my review of the new 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S (991.2) with its new turbocharged 3 liter boxer engine. I know you might think I am hating a lot on the turbocharged motor, but in all fairness, I talked about that it's faster and that this is probably the best turbocharged engine I've tested so far. I believe only a Ferrari 488 GTB can top that in terms of emotions.
I just love the noise naturally aspirated motors make and always would go N/A over forced induction. I don't care about power and numbers. I care about having fun, feeling emotions and getting goosebumps when accelerating because of the incredible sound.
Nevertheless, the new 991.2 is a fantastic car. Probably the most perfect car the Carrera has ever been. If that's a good thing, I'm not sure.
Please enjoy this review and let me know what you think about the new Carrera in the comments below!

Porsche is “Turbo” and embraced the tech from the beginning. The turbo sound with the sports exhaust sounds amazing and more refined. This opinion from 34 years of 911/930 ownership so I would say I am not influenced at all by social media and a genuine owner that puts his $$$ where I believe. The low end torque of the 991.2/992 is A LOT stronger than my earlier 997 and 991.1. After owning a 992, I sold it and went back to the 991.2 which I believe is by far the best modern 911 in build quality, materials and design.

I don’t disagree. However the Carreras were always N/A. I just want to have the option so the customer can chose. I definitely understand why Porsche had to go this route and again for turbo-charged cars they’re doing a great job. I’d love to hear from you why you decided the 991.2 was nicer than the 992? I would agree with you but I haven’t driven the 992. I’m just not a big fan of the big butt and the digital cockpit.

At last an "objective" comment, not an opinion but a comment. On open roads nowadays you are left with only two enjoyments when driving a sports car : the sound of the exhaust/engine and taking curves at high speed. And there is no doubt that the "music" delivered by the 991.1 GTS exhaust system overwhelms the new 991.2 turbo charged. I did the experiment myself. Thank you Groschi for making that point in all fairness.

Thank you for your very accurate comment! I feel as if this current generation of sports car owners and "enthusiasts" don't care about the driving experience anymore as much as your generation did/does. Now they just want faster and faster cars that have to be comfortable for the everyday commute without any sacrifice. So a 911 must be as comfortable as a BMW 5 series and be as fast as possible without having to downshift since this is an inconvinience. The mental transition towards the electric car has begun! Thanks again for sharing your opinion.

Your video assessment is right on the money. My 2015 991.1 4 GTS , for me at least, is close to perfection. It howls at you any time you ask, has the traction to get you through a swamp, and with 430bhp accelerates as rapidly as you could possibly ever need. No turbo lite with false exhaust crackles for me - my GTS is a keeper!

barack obama There's more to compare than just sound, albeit the sound of the 981 is generally considered nicer than the 718. But let's see a video of the the 718 vs the 981 off the line, 0-60, and then around the track. We'll call it "The Tortoise (981), and the Hare (718)". Better sound = 981. Better performance = 718.

Thank you for your comparison on the 991.1 and 991.2 But for me.. NATURALLY ASPIRATED, PERIOD!! :) Porsche added about 80lbs of extra exhaust tubing to try to match the N.A. engine sound in the cabin. Also they replaced the metal oil pan for a plastic one to save on weight.

Finally an honest review between the 991.1 and 991.2. No doubt the 991.2 is quicker and improved, but that's not the point. Porsche especially the 911 has always been a driver car, not just mash the pedal and go. Plenty of cars for half the price will give you more HP and 0-60 speed. After making the mistake of selling my M3 E92 and being let down by the new gen M3 I had to find scratch the itch I was missing. About a month ago I bought a gently used 2015 911 S and couldn't be happier. IMO it's one of the best examples of a NA.
@GroschiAutomotive
@GroschiAutomotive 7 жыл бұрын
Glad you agree with me Alonso. I think you having owned an E92 M3, you really understand what a performance oriented naturally aspirated engine feels like to drive , and how dull a turbo-charged engine sounds in comparison. I am glad you were able to switch from a new M3 to a 991 911S. Very good choice! Have fun with it!
@ARC480
@ARC480 7 жыл бұрын
Absolutely 100% agree! The new M3 is a great car, but so dull to drive. Even when I owed the M5 F10 despite all the power I was still left wanting to hear that engine rev and dance with the car. Before buying the 991 I was close to getting a Tesla, but again the lack of engine and noise was the deciding factor. If you got the NA bug there is no replacement for displacement, no matter how nice they make the cars. I’m hoping to get out to the Autobahn next year and really push these cars, at least legally  Keep up the good vids Groschi.

Totally agree with you, but I went the Tesla route haha. I drive a 90D currently for my daily commute and I am quite happy with it. Because the sound of these turbo charged cars just doesn't do it for me. So I rather get something full electric with unbelievable power for the week. I don't have money for a nice fun weekend car though :/ Thank you very much and enjoy visiting Germany!

i've never driven a 991.1 and the only experience i had with the n/a engine was in a cayman gts with the 3.4 unit. i just drove the new 991.2 4s and it feels much more powerful (to be expected), especially on the street using only the midrange, however it still rips all the way to the red line which is great. i agree on the sound, the old engine felt more exciting but in a carrera -- not a gt3 -- i think the 3.0 is ok, it makes it more of an eveyday street car. and with all that torque and 4wd it feels very fast on the road, and i suspect on track too. 4ws felt incredible too, it makes the car feel smaller that it is... loved it
@GroschiAutomotive

Ya I can see your point. But I loved the Carrera as a N/A car and the Turbo just doesn't excite me at all.

I had a hard time deciding between a new 991.2 C2, and a used 991.1 C2S. I drove them back to back a couple of times. The newer car was an improvement over the older one in every way, but it didn't give me goosebumps. The 991.1 does. It even has a nice growl between 2-3k rpm, and makes me smile every time I hear it. So I went with the 3.8 engine. Your video also helped me decide :)

your video is well shot, but i do disagree with regards to your opinion, while the sound is very different, the volume is still there, it's a matter of personal taste if someone prefers a NA sound over a turbo sound, but I think this car doesn't sound bad at all. however, in every other aspect the car is better than the 991.1, the reason for buying a Carrera is to get a nice enjoyable daily driver sports car, it is not a dedicated special weekend car in the same way a GT3 is, so from that respect, the turbo engine with the extra torque is way more usable and enjoyable on normal roads where taking it to redline for 3 gears would land us in jail. and with regards to appreciation on 991.1, i highly doubt it, the GT cars would, but not the regular carreras
@GroschiAutomotive
@GroschiAutomotive 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I am glad you liked the review! However, I couldn't disagree more with you. "The volume is still there"!? The new turbo car is probably 10db quieter, which is a lot! As I said, over 100 kph, you can't hear the engine anymore, which wasn't the case with the old car. In terms of sound quality, the car doesn't sound bad for a turbo car. Yes the Carrera is supposed to be enjoyable every day, but it's supposed to be an engaging sports car as well. At least that's what they advertised it to be the last 60 years. They didn't even want to go with forced induction but the strict emission regulations just tie their hands. You bring up a good point, with being in 3rd gear would land you in jail. This is exactly why I hate people say "but it's faster". Faster doesn't make a car better or more enjoyable. In countries with speed limit (99.9% of the world) especially. In that regards I also found the .1 more rewarding and more enjoyable to drive, because you can rev it out without going 100+ mph. But anyways, everybody has their own taste of course, and is entitled to their own opinion. I can just speak for myself and a few Porsche owners that are in my circles. We do believe that the 991.1 GTS will appreciate, since there won't be more N/A Carrera models in the future. They will go hybrid/turbo and then full electric. That's the point people will pay a very good amount of cash in order to get a N/A musical instrument, that sounds good while cruising, good on the low rev band, unlike any GT car. ;) Thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts!! :)

@GroschiAutomotive
@GroschiAutomotive 6 жыл бұрын

Groschi Automotive in another one of your videos you compared the exhaust. When the 991 took off and was all the way around the corner it still sounded as if it was 10 yards away. The new one drive like two feet and sounded like it was a mile down the road.. another thing. when I was 19 I got to drive a drive a turbo. And when your 19 or haven't driven a truly fast car you don't understand what fast really is. You know how kids are" oh I'd take a 700hp car".The turbo scared the crap out of me and made me respect cars even more. It humbled me I had a understanding what 530hp really meant. That's why I love the GTS. Wasn't to much but enough to have ALOT of fun and actually learned how to drive the car and fell the rear weight bias. Started with a 914, moved to a 964 that I loved, then to a 997.2 that grew on me after time. Great car, but missed the sounds and smells of the old air cooled boxers. Looking to replace the 997 and test drove a new F-type and a 991.2. The new 911's are incredible machines but do not elicit the same visceral emotions that driving an F-type R or SVR with it's supercharged V8. Decisions, decisions, but I think there is a bad kitty in my future. I feel the 911's have become just too refined.

GTS includes the X51 power kit as standard (430hp v 400hp) which has different intake and exhaust manifolds plus includes the sports exhaust as well. X51 equipped cars are louder than N/A Carrera S models without the power kit; hardly a fair comparison...

Add an aftermarket exhaust system if it matters that much. My 991.2 GTS is loud enough for me, I don't like cars that drown out the audio system. I only care about beating the car next to me. Younger guys like noise, I like quick and fast.

So more power and more torque that drives really well. So except for the sound its a great car. Speaking as one of the many people who own a 911S and live in a major city we did suffer from a lack of low end torque. City driving means you don't have as much space to open up the car meaning the low end torque upgrade lets you get a bit more fun out of this new 911.
@GroschiAutomotive
@GroschiAutomotive 7 жыл бұрын
Yes and yes. The car was never designed to be the perfect city car, more so a enthusiasts car for the open roads. But times have changed unfortunately. Of course the torque will make driving easier, especially in the city.

Groschi Automotive Agreed as Porsche is not opening many dealerships in those parts of the country that one could actually enjoy a Porsche. In cases where it has expanded its dealerships that is due to what the Porsche brand has become. Like it or not Porsche is now a maker of SUV's which also makes sports cars. I'm not bothered by this unlike some who feel it takes away from the Porsche brand. A Macan is not a 911 but what Porsche makes from selling SUV's it can take and put into its sports cars in terms of R&D. If a soccer mom owning a Porsche makes the sports car a better product then lets hear it for soccer moms and their Porsche SUV's. Those who can afford the 911 models are the same people who live in exactly the worst places to drive any sports car. There are a dozen Porsche dealerships in what are the worst cites for daily traffic. For those who have never lived in a major city they can't understand that we who love sports cars have to get our daily thrills in miliseconds. That or take our cars to the track. I love my Porsche track time but as a daily driver I look for any chance to enjoy the my 991S one second at a time.

I have no problems with Porsche building SUVs. I have problems with the government regulations that forced Porsche to put turbocharges in the Carrera. It's not like they wanted that. Of course now they defend it by saying "it's more torque bla bla". I was there. I was at the presentation in Tenerife. You can talk to these people face to face and can see that it breaks their heart to go this way, especially with their 4 cylinder turbos in the Cayman and Boxster.

Groschi Automotive I agree but what choice did they have? Either they go Turbo or Porsche power output grinds to a halt. Hey if this means my 991S from 2013 is worth more to purists I can live with it.

Steve Jovan They could have squeezed out a bit more of the naturally aspirated motor. They also could have gone up with the size of it. But of course turbo is a lot easier and better in a testing scenario. Haha yeah the 991.1 (especially the GTS's) will definitely be in very high demand soon. I have to get one before then!

You're shifting way too early in the 991.1, which understates the difference in sound. The power in the 991.1 comes in at higher RPM up to red line, and it sounds incredible at that point.

There isn't such a huge difference in sound between the S and the GTS. The S also sounds miles better than the 991.2 S. However, at the time of the filming, we had to work with what we had. We took the best sounding Carrera .1 and .2 to compare them. I think that's fair. ;)

Waste of time... I have seen only one Camaro in the past 10 years - literally. Maybe not more than 5 Vettes and no Challenger. Those are toys for Americans. So what you are asking for is for the European distributors to contact every last small KZfaq channel and have them drive one of those cars, which is not going to happen. E.g. in Germany, they only sold like 10 Cadillac CTV last year...

Turbo's were used by Porsche AG in the past as well, I don't see any problems with it. The sound fits the car and I like that turbo whistle or wooosh sound that you describe. And it sounds better and not maybe louder than the 991 if I make a comparison from your video, I'm sorry but I have to disagree. Anyways, it's my opinion. Subjective. As for the rest, I like the steering-wheel of the 991.2 more. Before this came out, ironically I was thinking about it that the steering-wheel was a big turn-off for buying the car if that moment ever came. I'm glad engineers took notice that this part of the interior was outdated.

Some people don't care for the booming sounds the old NA made at low RPMs, as well as other sounds. It gets old quick but of course only actual owners experience this, not journalists that only have the car for a few hours. You won't hear the turbos and there is more engine sound with the top up or the coupe. It sounds much better than you make it seem. I've owned the 981 boxster for 3 years. All the NA sounds get old after a while and makes you look like a moron sometimes. Today, I what personally enjoy more is the handling and how a car drives, which my 2017 c4s with all the sport options is superior at. The new car is way faster and everything about it is more alive than the previously generation, which feels sluggish and dated when driven back to back. If you want NA engine sounds, you're best off with the previous generation boxster/cayman...those cars sounded and drove much better than the previous generation 911. No longer the case with the new generation. Not all enthusiasts drive cars just to hear exhaust sounds, but this is a good sales pitch for people who never owned a sports car...and auto journalists making youtube videos.
@GroschiAutomotive
@GroschiAutomotive 6 жыл бұрын
+Nick I have the car for 2 weeks plus I have driven it now on many occasions. I have even more time in 991.1s... I didn't say that all enthusiasts drive cars just to hear the exhaust sounds - but most will agree that it is part of the experience you want in an engaging sports car. If you would know how Porsche internally thinks about Turbos, you probably wouldn't buy a .2. Through my work you meet so, so, sooo many Porsche owners both in the States and in Europe. Easily 90% consider the old car as "better" and many of them are keeping the previous generation. Many of them even think that the 997.2 was much better than the 991.1 (which I agree with in some parts). The new car is a typical GT. The 911 is turning more and more into a leasing car for doctors and lawyers who use it to drive to their office every day. It's the sad truth. Why do you think Porsche Motorsport is fighting so hard to keep the N/A engine? The 991.2 has a great chassis and turns very well, but to me it is very boring. If it isn't to you, then that's great ;)

Wow so much bias and misinformation in your world. Difference between me and you is I actually own a .2 and have been daily driving Porsche cars for many years. You just go for joy rides and post how much you do or don’t like them. Of course you meet auto journalists with similar opinions, however none of you can actually afford one. I don’t consider auto journalists enthusiasts because they never speed enough time with a car to truly understand it. Of course a 911 is a super GT car that people like me can comfortably drive every day...that’s exactly why I bought it. You got into a 911 with the wrong expectations and don’t understand the car. Perhaps you should put more thought and consideration into things before posting a review. Being 100% focused on sound (which is far better than you make it seem) got you blinded by emotion and you’re missing the point.

I've driven Porsche's most of my life. My family have owned Porsche's as well. So basically from 964 onwards we've had everything. If you say that the new 911 turbo Carrera is a true and emotional engaging 911, you have no idea what you're talking about. The lack of emotion in this car is just a result of downsizing and Volkswagen's terrible leadership.
