Teoh Yi Chie, if you're not going to use the dagger and the oval brush, would you sell those brushes to me? Count them as used or secondhand things.. so i can buy them a lot more cheaper that the brand new ones haha. I live in Jakarta, but i got friends in Singapore. Pls reply, thank you ☺

For a long time I hesitated buying these Silver Black Velvet brushes, but kept hearing and reading rave reviews. As a lifelong painter, I've a collected a handful of really good sables and squirrel mops (which I love) but was concerned about overuse and the expense of replacing them. So I tried one silver brush and was immediately hooked. They carry all the water a pure squirrel mop will and as you say, Teoh, come to a wonderful, accurate point (depending on brush style.) They don't snap back like a good sable, but do come to a fine point when loaded. The size 8 round is my most used. The Jumbo round small is equivalent to a #3 mop. They are more floppy than sable as a rule, but are useful and well-made, all for around half price of equivalent sables and possibly more savings for equivalent squirrel mops. The only thing I'm sorry about is I didn't try them sooner! Thanks for all your fine videos, Teoh!

Michele Harvey I totally agree with all your points! And from someone who works pretty tight and realistic, I found myself fall in love with the feel of these ( I bought 2 smaller rounds to try a while back) sooo much they've helped me have fun &loosen up more! I'll eventually get 1 oval - contemplating what size will work for me as they are pricy.. Teoh's review was spot on!

Thanks for this review. These are my favorite brushes! I do almost all my paintings with only the round size 12, even small paintings (smaller than A5). The point is so sharp that I often forget to switch to size 8, even when it comes to painting small details.

My fav brushes. I love the malleability of the shape of the brush without it completely breaking shape like you might get with other brushes. Makes them fun to play around with, and these brushes work with ink surprisingly well. I'm used to using weasel or sable kolinsky hair but I'm surprisingly hooked to this brush.

Have all these brushes! #8 is my work horse. The tip has curled on me but I can always reshape and get it back. I use the striper like a rigger most of the time, and the oval was is great for filling in a large wash while retaining the ability to get that sharp point for tiny areas (say like around hair in a portrait or an animal) I love them! The only one I have an issue with is my #2 round. It's just too soft and limp for such a tiny brush it's hard to paint a nice round pupil and other precise details. My #4 round is great though!

Thanks for the review Teoh, I was wondering what your take would be on these brushes. I have the oval wash 3/8" and a round size 10 and they are my favorite brushes. I started a rather detailed painting doing a big background wash with the oval brush and found without thinking I had continued the foreground details with it because it it has such a nice point it was doing everything I needed!

My first Silver Brush was a medium mop. Great brush and held a lot of paint. After a year or so I noticed a small crack developing in the brush above the ferrule. No big deal. It's still a good brush today. Recently, I bought a 1 1/2" Silver Black Velvet flat wash brush (3014S), and paid $30 bucks at one of the big online art supply stores. Before I used the brush, I cleaned it with Masters and put it up to dry. Next day I noticed several cracks in the paint handle above the ferrule. I wasn't too happy about this, since it doesn't make sense to have a watercolor brush that falls apart when it gets wet. The art store wouldn't give me my money back; said I would have to take it up with Silver Brush; who never answered my email. It is important for me to have my brushes stay in good condition with use, so no more Silver Brushes for me. I use the Escoda line (Perla, Versatil, and Aquario) of brushes and really like them, they look as good today as the day I bought them. I also use Da Vinci and Raphael. Great brushes also. But you can't go wrong with Escoda.

I've not tried their travel brushes before. But if the sizes follow these wooden brushes, size 8 will be like a size 6 from other brands so it may be a bit small for some.

I purchased the travel brushes in the 2, 4 and 8 sizes. I was so unhappy with them as my number 2 did not return to a point and the number 8 had several short hairs that frizzed out along the sides as if the squirrel had a bad hair day. A waste of money. I then purchased a number 6 Escoda 1548 Versatil and haven't looked back. It keeps its point and shape and holds enough water for me. Loved it so much I purchased a number 2 and am now trying to decide if I should purchase the number 10 or 12. Although the Black Velvet brushes work for some, they did not work out for me.

I too love the Escoda Versatil. I was introduced to Escoda by a small artist shop about an hour away from me. I had asked for something that was 'in the middle'. quality wise as I was a beginner, but I also like quality; plus feel uncomfortable using animal hair. He recommend the Perla which I found quite good. However, when later I tried the Versatil there was quite a difference. I am saving up now for more of them, and would like the travel versions too.

Azzu Paris Dick Blick.com (USA) has a great selection of Black Silver brushes in many materials...synthetic, blends etc. Best prices by comparison. Blick’s tutorial on brushes is a wonderful reference. Black Silver web site has a full listing of all their brushes. I enjoy using their flat, round, rigger & round wash brushes. Their Silver Atelier Golden Quill’s are full bodied, hold an amazing amount of water for large washes & maintain a point for work around without switching brushes. Funny that, I was watching a review on these brushes on" Mind of watercolor" on YT, and Steve recommended all of them, but really did not like the rigger ( too floppy) That goes to show that everyone experiences brushes differently, and since they are not cheap, so I hesitated for a while! :) It gave me some time to save up for them, too. ;) So many people were so enthusiastic about these brushes, that I overcame my doubts, and I am so happy I did get them in the end.A lovely birthday present. Acrylic, India ink should have their own brushes because those medium dry hard, cause the hair to stick together and will damage the brush. Gouache is fine as it's just like watercolour which is easy to wash off.

Hi Teoh... I just purchased three of these in a set - just the round. It does go to a nice point and handles well, BUT I have stray hairs here and there that stick out from the brush. When it is wet, it isn't bad, but still not used to having a few hairs not fall back into place. Is that normal with these brushes or do I just have a bad set?
@teohyc
@teohyc 4 жыл бұрын
Those hairs may be accidentally bent. If it doesn't affect your work, you can just keep using them. The hair doesn't look nice but unfortunately there's no easy way to make the hair group together. Or try washing with brush soap and use the soap to shape it each time after painting.

I bought a round size 8 and don’t like it at all. To me it didn’t hold as much paint as sable. I really don’t like that don’t spring back either. Glad I only bought the one.

Just a humble suggestion: Try pure synthetic brushes. We love & pamper our pets; it'll cost us so little to throw their wild or 'farmed' cousins a few crumbs of empathy. You'll never see a brush company show videos of them harvesting animal hair. Few do it themselves; most shop internationally for the cheapest stocks of raw hair. Most of it comes from poorer countries, where there is virtually no consideration for the suffering of the animals, nor any enforced anti-cruelty laws or regulations. The less we see, the worse the conditions & the slaughtering. Good synthetic brushes may not hold quite as much liquid, but they're _far_ better than they ever used to be been - very useable, and quite satisfying. Using them, we know we're not supporting something we'd never dream of subjecting a dog or cat to.

I agree, as nice as some of the animal hair brushes look, I have made a decision to buy only pure synthetics. Raphael have lovely synthetic squirrel brushes, and Escoda make some good synthetics (I have the Prado).

Cool Tulla! Let's try to spread the word that modern synthetics are no hardship or deprivation. :^> Other good bets are Princeton - Elite or Neptune series, or Rosemary&Co (not sure of the models) - in NAmerica, check at windriverart(dot)com. Just read carefully, both Co's also do animal hair. Cheers!

Not too many meat companies show videos of harvesting beef or the hides that go on to make the leather in our shoes, belts, and handbags either. What happens to the squirrel meat I wonder? That's considered good eating in many parts of the USA.
