Great review and one of the only ones that clearly mentions the pros/cons of the Roam when you already are part of the Sonos ecosystem (which I’m not!). Nice 👍🏻

I don’t think it’s overpriced. May be the only speaker this size actually worth the cost given all the features you get. Can charge via Chi. Google Assistant or Alexa. Bluetooth and WiFi. Instantly switch music back to speakers in the home. No other speaker has all these features

the main shortcomings in my mind are 1) stereo is only Wifi and not Bluetooth 2) cannot do double duty as rear speakers with my Beam in the bedroom. But it was a toss up between two One SLs vs two Roams. I ended up ordering one Roam. Something I can take out to the BBQ on the deck, or into the shower, or into another room by my computer desk where I expect it to be constantly plugged in most of the time

I have a bunch of Sonos S1 devices. I have not invested into a newer device that plays off of the S2 app. Can you combine S1 & S2 devices?

I want music by the pool. Do I get a Move speaker or a pair of Roam speakers? Which would kick out richer sound? I know Move is water resistant while Roam is waterproof.

I expect that you could AirPlay to 2x Sonos Roams when you want more volume and for the same money as the Move. Don’t always need the larger speaker.

Can I use this as a "permanent" speaker on the wireless pad - and occasionally move it around? Or do I have to turn it on and off every time I use it?

@@louiscarole9091 I asked that question on the Sonos forums. 1) Just like with the Move they can be left on the charger all the time and 2) they can play while charging.

Same At Costco they have the charge 4 for $99 I might get that instead but I’m in the Sonos ecosystem

Jbl charge 4 doesnt have wifi so the quality of music you can stream on it is way worst at home. It’s not the same category : the charge is a portable speaker while the roam is a portable as well as a home speaker.

@@808dms he meant the roam sounds better, but I don’t think there’s a big gap. however it’s not the same category, the homepod mini is stuck in its place, plugged in. the roam can be moved around and outside the house

Only Apple's speakers support Siri directly. You can connect the HomePod mini to a battery though! And there are little portable stations you can add the HomePod mini too for that purpose!

Bose Revolve perhaps? They do stereo while on Bluetooth, which the Roam does not (yet at least).

Should I replace my sonos One with this one or buy like a ultimate ears bluetooth speaker ? (the second option being more expensive because I can sell my sonos one at the cost of the roam) thank you

From all the reviews I have seen the Sonos One has better bass and more overall output than the Roam. So if sound is what you are after then the Sonos One is the better choice. But if portability is a must have then the Roam.

@@richardkirchknopf2215 what do you think of : homepod mini + sonos roam VS sonos one + random bluetooth speaker (jbl, ultimate ears,…) ? In the first one, I would use both speakers in my bedroom via airplay at the same time, and use my roam in the shower, on my balcony and outside with friends. In the second one, I would have the sonos one for bedroom and the bluetooth speaker for everything outside my room. I feel like homepod mini + roam is the better option because I’m pretty hyped by the homepod and because I think homepod mini + roam could sound better than sonos one (Also, I never use my sonos one at its full potential, I’m always at 20% volume). Moreover, I feel like the roam will be better for listening to podcasts in the shower : I’m afraid voices wont be intelligible with a bluetooth speaker.

@@louiscarole9091 I never owned a homepod mini and I am waiting for my single Sonos Roam to arrive. So I am basing everything on reviewers that have all done pretty good reviews IMHO. I have a random bluetooth speaker from a few years ago and I find it boomy and muddy sounding either in the shower or on the deck. So looking forward to the Roam for those scenarios. All the reviews have been quite positive for those scenarios. I don't play my Play:1s or my Sonos Ones at very high volume levels either. But all the reviews comparing the Sonos Ones with the Roams that I have watched all show that bigger speakers can put out more volume and more base. Everybody qualifies the Roam sound quality with "for this size speaker". Simple physics means the bigger Sonos Ones are capable of driving louder and more bass. So the Sonos Ones can fill a larger space with better sound. And the reviews have said that. The Roams are good if you sit near them and/or in a small space. Of course you can't take the Sonos Ones into a shower. And the wifi should have better sound than the bluetooth in the house.

@@richardkirchknopf2215 Yes I really agree with you, bluetooth speakers (even the newest ones) seem pretty muddy and not made for podcasts or radio (which I would love to listen to in the shower), simply because a bluetooth signal isn’t clear enough. Also, I think the Sonos One is a bit overkill for my room since I only listen to it at 20% volume max. I definitely think I’m gonna buy a homepod mini and a sonos roam. Thanks for your help.

check out JBL Link Portable and the Bose Portable Home, I’m torn between those 2 and the roam, but i think i’m gonna go with the roam for sound quality (compared to the jbl) and for the price (compared to the bose)

they don't pair with a soundbar, TV or even a PC as far as I know. So the question may be moot.

I was wrong. The Roam Bluetooth did actually pair with my PC and my phone. But as the stereo pairing is not supported I would not really use it for the computer.

Will this speaker work with Sonos app even outside home? That’s ground breaking for me. Sonos is kind of consolidating of all services I use so will be very handy.

sonos app is for the home wifi network. Away from home you need Bluetooth pairing directly with your phone.

It's just using Wi-Fi, similar to streaming through any of the Sonos sources

AppleInsider I meant a battery suck on the speaker. Wifi vs bluetooth. Does the 10 hr battery life of normal usage use wifi?

As did I. AirPlay 2 and native streaming both operate on Wi-Fi and use comparable battery life. Bluetooth doesn't give any big gains in battery life. You should still get close to 10 hours on Wi-Fi depending on your volume and how much interaction.

Battery life is not an issue if you think about it. You won't be using it constantly plus it has a sleep mode for when its not in use.

Might be great sounding if you can connect the darn thing. Overpriced and overrated with a really crappy absolutely required app S2, is way too frustrating. Get a Marshall Emberton instead. Superior in every way. Sonos? Lol. No.

Nah. There would be less ideas transmitted to the audience. Which is the purpose of a tech review, convey opinion. Not the same for cat videos though, I concur.
