Top review, thanks. It's bewildering how many cameras are appearing so quickly these days. I'm happy with my 5d mkiii and EM-1 though, they compliment each other well (macro work with the 5d and travel camera for the EM-1). Keep up the good work.

Just watched your review before I bought my a7RII and it was most helpful in answering many of my questions about finding a suitable mirrorless partner for my now aging and well worn D800. I did not wish to move to a crop sensor but wanted a light, everyday travel camera - to save me carrying my D800 and lenses everywhere I go each day. While I would not dream of putting down my D800 which is my third arm and eye - the Sony fitted the bill. While my existing stock of high-quality lenses will not transfer easily (I believe the adapters do not offer full AF functionality) I have thought much about how I am to use this camera and I do not require the same lens stock - a kit and a prime will probably meet all I need. I have read the many comments on this page and question if the "one size fits all' approach appearing to be needed by some contributors is really an interest in photography - it's the person behind the equipment and what they see that is important - the camera is the tool to transform your mental image into a photo - like any job there are right and wrong tools - Gret review I will subscribe

Top job Toby: thanks a lot. I am considering an A7II as a dedicated macro body so this was a really beneficial review for me. I currently own an A7III but hate having to change lenses - hence the requirement for a second body. Though I have owned two camera bodies for years I thought I might get away with just one body. Well, we all make mistakes - as the Dalek said climbing off the dustbin. So, it's back to two camera bodies for me.

Excellent review! You really touched on all the points I was considering. I went in to the camera shop thinking I was going to buy a mirror less more like the Olympus OM-D but after explaining my needs they showed me the a7. The price point is what has me stalling from buying it. Since I thought the mirror less systems were more like $800-$1000. Moving from an out dated non-full frame Nikon and prime lenses, now I'm looking for something great to travel and pack around but still have excellent image quality and prime options. This seems like the winner but any advice on whether the a7 is a better choice over the OM-D? Do they even compare? Thank you!

Thanks for a nice review... I'm REALLY having a hard time deciding on which camera I should upgrade to. I currently have the Sony A58, and was actually thinking about buying the Sony A77ii... But now I really don't know...? The more I look in to the different A7 cameras, the more unsure of the A77ii I become... My budget could probably handle the A7ii I think. I've also seen a A7R that's within the budget... Besides taking a lot of personal family pictures, I sometimes do weddings (usually just a couple of times a year) and a few portraits. Other than that I just like taking pictures... One thing I would like to get out of an upgrade is better ISO performance. There is too much noice with the A58... I also have a couple of lenses that I like using, plus the Nissin Air commander with a couple of speedlights... Would I be able to use this gear as usual with the A7 series - or do I for instance suddenly need an adapter for the lenses..? So.... A77ii - A7ii - A7R.... my head is spinning...! :-) If any of you have any thoughts then please share :-)

How do you think about an idea of using an A6000 kit zoom lens onto an A7II as an everyday carrying snap shooter? It will be on a cropping mode, but this makes a whole package really compact so that it fits in a pocket of a wind breaker.

Trying to get many opinions for a better decision: I have two Nikons in the bag, a D3s & D800 and all nikkor lenses. Just recently retired from sports so the D3s is now more or less a brick in terms of weight. I find I take out the D800 more because its far lighter and the resolution/video is far better. I know the a7II won't technically replace the D3s but in your opinion, would you see any drawbacks from dropping the D3s (keeping the 800 and all the glass) and swapping to the a7II? It sure would be nice to have that walk around feature. Great video and thanks!

Really enjoyed this video. You do a great job explaining features, benefits, and disadvantages. I realize this is now dated so I wanted to get your thoughts currently. I use a Nikon D610 and have a handful of primes and expensive telephotos. I also have manual lenses from my film days (Fujica) and assorted slow lenses from consumer Nikon days. At any rate, the wife and I are heading to Germany and Italy in a little over a month. I know it's time to upgrade my camera and I've long had my sights set on the D850, which I'll likely do. However, we'll be at Oktoberfest on its busiest day (opening ceremonies). I think I'd rather not lug around the D850 or D810 at the crowded festival, but I do want to capture the Burgenmeister tap the first keg. I certainly don't want to lug the 70-200mm 2.8 VR all day long (and not sure it's permissable anyway). I was thinking 50mm 1.4 prime but still think this may be too much to worry about with beer flowing and spilling in elbow-to-elbow crowds. All this said, not sure I'm ready to fork over for a new D850 and a good full-frame travel camera, though possibly I could be persuaded. Do you have any recommendations? Would you still consider the Sony A7 Mark II for my needs? Of course, I'd love to jump all the way up to Zeiss M and be done with it but that's totally out of the question at the moment. Thanks again for the video. Really nicely done.

Thanks for the great review, Toby. There's such a wide array of camera choices now. I wish they'd all share their technologies and then we'd have one heck of a camera. Merging Samsung focus, a7S low-light, Nikon dynamic range, Canon battery life, and GH4 in-camera 4K would be pretty sweet.

Hi Toby, when you talk about the ISO you say it goes up to 25600 and you can also "artificially" go below 100 as well. I've always wondered why an ISO of 60 or 80 is considered less legit than 25,600 or even 400 or 800 for that matter. How is lowering it a little any different than raising it a little? If 100 is the standard and raising it introduces noise and lowers dynamic range while allowing you to shoot in lower light then what are the costs and benefits of lowering it to 80, 60, or 50? thanks, John

Hi, great review!, probably the best online for this camera. Im currently considering buying either the original a7 or the a7ii and selling my Nikon D610. My main concern if AF speed. I plan to buy the Zeiss Batis 85mm which has stabilization (albeit not as good as a7ii). I understand that there will be a drop in AF speed in both sonys. I just don't want to be disappointed with autofocus. Will the a7 hunt that much?. On the other side i prefer the smaller body and style of the original mark 1. Any advice? Thanks a mill

+Barry Duggan Hi Barry - with the a7 focus will be decent but not as fast as the a7ii. Basically a7 will be faster than your live view of D610, noticeably faster but not nearly as fast as viewfinder focusing. What will you be shooting? landscapes and general travel> will be fine. People, people on the move - you might be disappointed unless you go with the a7ii

nice video as always - thanks - I find my A7 a bit sluggish - and focus not so responsive and no IBIS - IQ about the same if not same - dilemma is lenses - yes there is quite a few lenses now available - but they are mostly Zeiss or G or GM labeled Sony lenses for a premium price - putting ownership of one with some lenses a lot higher then say M43 or Sony E APS-C mount - but then Sony does not have many E APS-C lenses - of course there are the nice affordable 35mm F1.8 with IS and the 50mm F1.8 with IS and the 18-200 for example - but not many affordable Sony branded - but some Zeiss for premium price - Yes one is attempted with the nice 24MP Sony sensor - but IBIS no match to the Olympus OMD one - but of course with the say the 55mm F1.8 - Interesting to hear that the RAW files are compressed - I wonder if that is the case with the A6300 - for me a big thing is no Touch LCD - and menu system not that friendly - I have had issues with apps - some apps do not run on the A7 - some do not run on the A6000 and some do not run on the A6300 :( I think Sony has done poorly in regards to Apps -- not that the concept is not good - but the implementation and installing - with Sony making millions of smart Phones with Touch LCD etc - can not do better on their cameras :( I totally agree on the cost of the apps - and for price should be in - camera - A big shout to Panasonic for loading their cameras with options and Touch LCD etc etc - no more NX1 :(

As good as the upgrade of the A7 is, I still wouldn't go for it over the A7R. However, I am a landscape photographer. I like those AA filters being removed and having a lot of megapixels so I can crop and still have a lot of megapixels left. The IBIS is nice though. I do wish the A7R had the new video codec.

Which one should I buy for all-around type of photography? I shoot everything! Street, landscape, sports.. etc. Sony A7/ A7ii Nikon D610 Nikon D7200 Canon 70D I shoot videos lot too, but, touch screen doesn't matter so much, I just want the best quality and speed. If you want, you can recommend me another camera under $1500.

Hilarious "Mirrorless look more digital then DSLRs" Like a monty Python sketch DSLRs have no relevance anymore except for a larger native lens range. If you can use a set of Sony lenses, never look back at the noisy mechanism shaking bulky and heavy mirror box. Oh, and Sony's files look much more an love and beautiful then the digital DSLRs

Either are fine - Nikon offers some wide angle lenses that are excellent and probably would be the safest pick unless you want smaller/lighter body - but likely end up using adapters and canon or nikon glass

For it's price, yes ... I agree it's the "best" FF mirrorless. However, now the A7r II wins that title ... unfortunately, for almost double the price.

The sony a7mark ii satisfies me completely, no need to update just to get existing features updated, excellent added features, i like.......i will wait for the a7 mark ii to get an update to a mk iii so i can get a much better price......If i choose to remain with sony.....i associate weight with quality, not size......This is only the beginning of closing the weight gap between the A and E mounts....Quality lenses will have weight to them to satisfy the software and build durability period!

PhotoRec Toby , do you have any thought regarding the a& Mark II's stabilization vs. the well-received stabilization on the OM-D E-M5 Mark II? Thanks, much.

***** Its not even close to be honest. Olympus 5 axis is so much more mature. Maybe in a couple more years Sony will catch up.

Thanks, Neverland. Now if only someone would just make a body with the EM-5 MkII's stabilization, the A7s' low light capabilities, and the GH4's versatility.

Neverland Traders well but it's a huge difference of what Sony has to stabilise compared the tiny sensor of the Olympus. Apples and oranges.

Neverland Traders I'm getting 0.4 sec clean handheld shots both wide and tele with kit zoom lens. Not 1-2 secs E-M5II, but then that sensor is 4 times bigger, and ISO slightly better

+Reynaldo Jurado Biolley ISO 50 is an 'extended' ISO and won't give you cleaner images. It's so you can get a shot right in camera

Question does A7II shoots a better video than A6000 ? I want to upgrade from a6000 but i kind a wondering which to choose A7II or A6300 ? A6300 is it better under low light than A7II for stills ?
@photorectoby
@photorectoby 5 жыл бұрын
The two cameras are quite similar in low light for video but the a7ii is a little better - especially at the higher ISOs. Do you have good crop lenses? Keep them and go a6300 otherwise you will need to budget for lenses with the move to full frame.

I do mostly street photography and landscape/scenery. Debating really between canon 80D, Sony a7II, and Sony A7R- any advice?
@photorectoby
@photorectoby 7 жыл бұрын
This is tricky - the A7r for landscape is awesome BUT slow for everything else. The a7ii is a good all around camera and with a little prime lens quite good for street photography and the nice sony sensor still shines for landscape and editing. The 80D is a solid all around camera, cheap lens selection, easy to use but that sensor is not nearly as good as the Sony. helpful?

Can you do review about sony A7R vs A7ii? I have a Canon 6D and a bunch of Canon L Glasses, I want to have a great landscape camera, should I go for A7R or A7ii ?, either with metabones IV. You should do a review for A7R or something about Canon Lenses and Sony camera with adapter because a lot of Canon people want to jump or have a Sony camera but they stuck with a bunch of L Glasses. Thanks for all your great works and efforts!
