I take a look at some DIY test leads that I have put together vs. sets you can purchase with various connectors. Pros and cons...caution on the gauge and type of wire....
A big thanks to Franky for the leads and connectors he sent me: mjlorton.com/forum/index.php?t... or www.99centHobbies.com

You are 100% correct Sir, not to turn this into an ad for Frankey, but he really is awesome! I find myself reaching for the leads I got from him more than any of my Pomona or Fluke leads, simply because the ones I ordered were shorter. Great for the bench. Thanks for sharing Martin! And for everyone else, contact Franky from Martins forum because he has loads more stuff and great prices for forum members. Excelent review Martin, you rock man!!!

With heatshrink I would suggest getting the adhesive lined sleeving in assorted sizes. Shrinks and the hot glue lining sticks well to the inside and makes a waterproof and much stronger joint.

can you suggest a mid grade solderable plug for diy cables since you seem to have made some in the past. I notice there are some differences, nickel plated, copper beryllium etc., also splayed lantern vs rod construction vs slit Source for the gold splayed solderable ones ?

I use alligator clips to mock up speakers. Is there an appreciable difference when using solid copper clips vs stainless or nickel plate? Why would one use copper wire and then terminate with a comparatively lower conductive metal in the clip?

The 2 prong grippers are designed as SMT grabbers. That's why the are so small and fine. Oh course you can re-purpose them as you see fit as we do with so much of the stuff we have. :D

There's also a safety hazard with those screwed in ones if the head of the screw is visible and you're able to touch it. You should never use those screwed in types if you're working with higher voltages than say 60VDC

+Frank E Davidson Ironically, I blew the fuse of my new PSU while probing around with Fluke probes with the GS38 shroud missing. I'm struggling finding GS 38 tip shrouds in red and black.

I use a set of modular leads similar to those on a daily basis. They have a probe style handle on one end, and are some form of silicone rubber insulation. The sort of dull looking type, not the shinier type you tend to see these days. They're entirely unrated, I would consider them perfectly good for domestic stuff (CAT II, III on lower voltage circuits). They can usually be found on ebay by searching for 'Cage 5R542' or 6625-01-121-0510. Highly recommended.

Is there a difference between test leads and power supply leads? I am just a low use hobbyist and it would be nice to buy a test lead kit that I could also use on the power supply. Thanks a million for sharing.

Ran out of space for cup hooks, went out and bought a few door hooks in place of them. Same number of hooks but hold more. Cup hooks are still on a short wooden bar as storage though, currently a lot of assorted USB cables and other things like cellphone chargers are there. If you want lies on cable look at cheap battery jumper leads, often less than 1mm of wire but a 10mm plastic insulation and a 200A rating....

Good quality speaker cable is oxygen free and low resistance ideally for a clear signal should be ideal for test leadss

was watching an electrician who made a fun video about tools from Wish, and he bought a multimeter that read ok but then smashed it due to it not having 'real' safety ratings, ok i can live with that it maybe didnt have any real hv protection, but he also went off on a little rant about the probe leads not being double insulated??? what was he expecting 2 different colors of pvc or something i have never in 40 yrs of the hobby seen double insulated probe leads on any meter i have bought, just a single red or black insulation.. Do double insulated leads exist?

I melted all my Agilent (E3600A-100 - kit) test leads when building my constant current load. I also have a couple of homemade test leads whit those screw type but i dont like it that the terminals are open. The safety banana plugs from Hirschmann or Multi Contact are 2.50 € EACH ! There must be a reasonable priced source out there ...

Could tell me somone where on ebay I can buy good quality banana plugs to be screwed? Best to be soldered are from hobbyking.com they are gold plated and HQ. I also buy flexible silicon wires from hobbyking(dont melt under 450*C), and I made wires/leads myself.

Buy from Frankie and either make your own to spec or use the heavier ones he has premade. At least take the good bare plugs he has and use a 4mm cable with them if needs be.

Silicone wire is nice but all the dust and dirt is attracted by it like to a magnet! So PVC is better.
