SHOOTING VIDEO: • Shooting the Plainfiel...
DOWNLOAD THE MANUAL: www.matebafan.c...
The Plainfield Model 71 has an interesting history, depending on whom you believe. It was either a government contract spy pistol used to dispatch dirty Communists, or it was a well-built production gun from some company in New Jersey that never took off.
Either way, its ability to switch between 25acp and 22lr makes it interesting in my eyes, and the build quality is high for a gun shooting such wimpy cartridges. My Blue Book has them priced quite low, but don't let that lead you to believe it's a Lorcin-tier gun. Their listed value is off, from what I've seen at real auctions.
I'll put up a shooting video in the future, so be sure to subscribe.

Perhaps the sights are raised to accommodate a suppressor like one of the earlier comments suggested. Maybe there were threaded barrels for the government contract.

I found a model 71 at a small gun shop in St. Augustine, FL. It's #1063 and unfortunatly did not come with the .25 kit or the box. Tried it at my outdoor range with both CCI and Thunderbolt ammo, both work well. SMOOTH trigger! Tends to shoot a bit left and high at least at 7.5 yards, which I would consider longer-than-real-world range. All in all, great little gun, can't wait to shoot it more!

Found one, in the box with both calibers. Very well made. I think for the time period the size would have compared well to the "James Bond" crowd. Sweet item. Thanks for the video.

Neat gun! Thanks for sharing. Now I want to pick one up! Would make a batter conversation piece than my 357 Mountain Gun (a tapered barrel on a L-Frame is a little odd lol). The way this gun is built fascinates me.

My guess is that these were meant to be concealed carry guns back in the 70's and 80's. Revolvers were king back then, so a small, heavy automatic that fires a small caliber would have been effective back then when there weren't many small, reliable auto's at that time. Really just a collector's gun now or for those who are really enthusiastic with guns that can shoot different calibers.

From what I heard about spying, often they are on ops that either don't require a gun or else a gun might be inconvenient to carry. Often spies might carry a gun that is small and concealable. Guns in .25 caliber were common and Ian Fleming carried one during WWII and his creation James Bond originally carried a .25. These guns would be more for self-protection then assassination. Assassination guns might be fitted with a silencer and be more combat friendly then a pocket guns which this is.

I got this package for around $450, if I remember right. Not sure of current values but unless something drastic has happened I'd think they'd sell for less than $6-700.

It seemed that the problem with mine was that the aluminum breech impacted the steel barrel after firing, when going back into battery. This caused the distortion and battering. I noticed this quite early on. Although I had originally bought it used, it appeared to have been fired very seldom.

Have one absolutely new in the box with the conversion kits in it's little separate box, warranty card, and original diagram/paperwork says model 71 & 72. Been sitting in one of my safes for 20+ years back then couldn't find out anything about it so it went into the piles.. Looks identical but the original conversion case box has a thin clear plastic cover and piece of paper with typed instructions on it. As I said absolutely brand new...

Owned one years ago. Although most of the pistol is made of steel, the face of the breech block was made of aluminum. Shooting Mini-Mags caused battering and distortion of the aluminum. Since it had been out of production for many years and no spare parts were available, I quit shooting it because of this. Aluminum breech block impacting on steel barrel would definitely limit service life of pistol, IMHO.

Hi. I'm just guessing that a"clandestine" pistol would have no maker's mark, no country of origin and certainly no serial number. However, that is not to say there weren't models made without the above mentioned markings. Intriguing mystery though. Excellent review----glad I found your channel.

Just saw video on model 71/72. Let me start with some facts on the plainfield machine co. sight. The name of the person Jim Mc Nulty is incorrect. Walter A.McNulty is the name of the guy that made that place click.he was responsible for many designs.from gun barrel lathes to electric systems for anything they needed. He designed the paratrooper model carbine. The story of CIA coming in to ask PMC to produce the model 71/72 is bull. The Model 71/72 was supposed as a 2ed or backup for nj state troopers.at the time there wasn't to many .25 cal that were reliable. How do I know this. Walter is my dad.I sometime would go on weekends. And shoot m1 and m2 carbines into the test pit. Yea a 10 year old burning powder with a M2! Now I own a model 72. Shoot it couple of times a year all the u tube I see only show the short version. I have short and long in both 22/25 my dad gave it to me in the late 80s. My dad worked closely with Gary Wilhelm (high standard)1st American designer to win gold in Olympics. To make prototype of 71/72. So when it came time to get one he got the 1st one off the line my serial # is WAM 001. Also we used to shoot the prototype of model 72 receiver made into a small rifle 12 inch barrel remove able stock looks like a mini m16.

Its a cool gun, but I would think, if the government was looking for a tiny pistol for covert operations, they'd just use Baby Browning's. They're some of the tiniest guns ever made and shoot the same caliber as this gun does.

ould see how someone could think it is a CIA gun, think about it. Vietnam used to be owned by the french, and the french used the 25 ACP in their Ruby pistols. So if they were out of .22 ammo, they could switch it to the 6.35mm.

Forgive me for sating the obvious truth but, if it were a cia assassin's gun then why would it have plainfield model 71 on the slide? A good example of a real assassin gun is the Russian pss silent pistol. It is completely devoid of maker marks or country of origin.

xXxBlackwaterXxX the Welrod was actually nicknamed the Assassin's Pistol. Yes it was used to take out sentries on stealth incursions into enemy territory, but it was also used for assassinations. If you think about it, it's the perfect weapon to assassinate someone with. It's extremely quiet

I like it - big for caliber , well machined, looks good - Nicer and more effective than Grandma's (rip) Colt Junior..I have doubts about the spy story though and I might be wrong , but if I were making spy guns they would have deniability no makers name , no serial number no country of origin, perhaps a copy of a foreign or enemy design...but maybe that's just the despicable me talking...Radoms --strangely enough , were used as spy guns - by everyone - hard to trace , Poland had them them Nazi's had them, Red Poles had them White Poles had them Russians had them and Americans had them from German captures.
