Great new studio, MTH and Broadway Limited Big Boy's have a lot more features for half the price. I always appreciate your reviews, a great guide before I decide to buy or not.

Great review James, you’ve set a standard I’m sure you’ll maintain. I’m really happy with my MTH Big Boy though. For about half the price, I got 4 passenger cars, smoke and wake your neighbors sound.

Dropped at 9:10. While I really want the Trix Big Boy and all the quality and functional accuracy that implies, I am scratching my head as to why, at a grand, this does not come with smoke generators installed at a time where most of the Big Boy manufacturers include them. And I don't mean the smoke generators that ooz out like other Marklin/Trix locomotives and most notably on an otherwise perfect BLI example, but with synchronized chuffing that the soon to be defunct MTH has on their Big Boy. Despite the crappy smoke generators, BLI is still the best (I have BLI and MTH), but a Trix with MTH's chuffing smoke would blow it away. No smoke generators (even the oozing ones), no sale.

It's really important to see the smoke generation to determine if Marklin/Trix have addressed the synchronized chuffing, They seem to have made a lot of cosmetic changes this time around, but nothing mentioned about any smoke improvements. I consider MTH the bar for other manufacturers to beat since their synchronization is the best IMHO. Smoke billowing from a smoke generator in an unrealistic steady stream is what has prevented me from buying this beautiful Big Boy up until now. It looks like, as of this comment, you have the only review on the 2020 big-boy. Smoke demo would be greatly appreciated, make it a full review, even if you have to "drop in" a couple of smoke generators.

Exhaust ports? She sure does look beautiful. Does the front of the smoke box smoke? It was on it's first run to Ogden back in May 2019.

Really digging the new studio James👍! As for the Trix Big Boy, it's a nice looking engine but the sounds seem to be off a bit, in fact it really doesn't sound like an articulated locomotive at all! It sounds more like a 4-8-4 more than anything! Great review though!

Good video James! The model shell is absolutely beautiful, love the cab interior floor is very good. For sounds, not so good in general. In my opionion the recent MTH HO bigboy has much better sounds, the loco has a big presence. I think the MTH wistle is spot on, big and powerful. The Trix one is pretty standard, thin and too clean and no depth. The MTH bigboy and the real bigboy wistles are raoucus and powerful. The absence of smoke is for me a minus.

Awsome modle but I think the brodway limited big boys are the best HO ones although expensive but the best I think is the lionel one they came out with in O scale it will have all the details as this one and a gloss paint scene and much more.

The sound are not really realistic but again this model came from a German manufacturer so their sound decoder must be very different. Have you heard that Athearn is bring the P42 to the Genesis line! I am so hyped for it after I get some questions answered I will likely pre-order one.

Thanks for the video. My 2 cents worth and my opinion. I have the 4014 Rivarossi pre excursion with a coal tender. This Trix is almost double the cost and IMHO not much difference to warrant the price.The Rivarossi came with ESU LokSOund V4. It couldn't have been more in-accurate. Terrible sound and terrible throttle response. Replaced it with a Tsunami and now it runs and sounds like the real thing.

The forward/reverse thingummy in the valve gear is not set right for the selected motion.

To everyone complaining about the sound, just drop the new UP 4014 sound file from ESU's library into it, problem solved. This is a brand new locomotive, it's going to take some run time to wear the driving wheels in properly before it will pull like it should. My Trix Big Boy from 2002 absolutely destroys my BLI and MTH Big Boys in the pulling department. BLI's sound is VHS-quality garbage, too!

It is Cool James then popped up the "Add" for the Feng Shui Buddha Bracelet Yup I could use 3 of those maybe change my Buddya mind it's all Good just kidding ya James Glad your in your New place cant wait to see your Layout and I will say the sound from that Engine is Pretty Darn Accurate.! James I'm Dabbing into HO for my Dad I still have a 100 loving for my N scale But my Pop wanted something Bigger he Thinks HO looks more Prototypical but N scale to me is no slouch.. But I decided to get him his first Layout I got a Athearn Genesis GP 50 with Tsunami Sound 2 it's the Burlington Northern 3106 it has a Rotary Beacon and the Gyro light in the Nose do you think that is a Good start off Engine for a Small Layout I do have a Powercab and I just picked up a ProCab-r and I got a RB02 to Run it Wirelessly this Engine with all its features was Around 220:00 I'm asking Guys that have HO layouts to help understand for me to Help my Dad I know a Good share of stuff on my N Scale but with HO it's a new learning Experience.. Sounds like only four chuffs per rev? And even then like someone walking through potato chips. The whistle is off. Nowhere as husky, resonant or throaty as it ought to be. The deck plate looks tiny. Is the paint on the gray side? Not as impressed as was expecting or hoping to be. Thanks for the review.

If I decide to buy a UP4014 excursion model, it‘ll be this one. Why? First of all, I don‘t use the smoke option because it messes up both layout and models with a shiny, oily film that makes the models look weird and the track lose conductivity. Second, neither BLI nor MTH EVER replied when I asked for advice or spare parts. Like, they don‘t care. You bought the model, now it‘s your problem. Trix has all the available parts listed on their website, and if I break a ladder or the motor turns to dust, I can order a new one no problem at all. The performance is silky smooth, I like that. As for the sounds, I would want to listen to that in person at my dealer, since a video played back via my laptop speakers can (!) be misleading. Who knows, maybe the sound really does suck, maybe it‘s pretty good, I‘ll find that out soon.

I thought the sounds were great. I watched videos of the real excursion train the sounds do justice. The herald on the cab floor is amazing.

Is there any ho scale big boy that made just like the real big boy? I mean, big boy rear bogie is fixed/rigid, right? It's a mallet type steam loco. I've never seen ho scale big boy with fixed rear bogie.

I agree as the accuracy of the details of the engine. Movement of the wheels is probably one of the best. Better than BLI. The chuff sound is not great. The bell sound is spot-on. The whistle, oh man, you think Trix could have done a better job.

I have the exact same model from the same brand.

Mine came new from the factory with broken parts and poor paint job. The speed at spped step 1 is too fast, and it goes from standstill to that speed too sudden. No gradual acceleration.

I think it is awesome, true the sounds are bad, they probably should have used simulations versus real sounds that were recorded improperly. A good sound engineer could probably improve them.

I suggest you use a stabilized camera. When you hand hold, the camera is too shaky and it deters from the video as a whole. Keep up the good work.

I really think the programmers need to understand that at SLOW speed the chuff is not anything but a slight puff. The only decoder I know of that really provides prototypical sound is the TCS. I have a TRIX 4015 and intend to install the TCS decoder in it. As for detail, I must say the Broadway Limited is my all around favorite, but I love the TRIX. Athearn? Thumbs down!

Looks great, but the sounds are TERRIBLE. To each there own I guess. I'll stick with my MTH from 2010 I believe? And soon the Promontory Version from Athearn in October with sounds recorded from 4014 during Southwest Tour! James, will you be reviewing Athearn Promontory version when it comes out in October?

Broadway Limited Imports still makes a better sounding big boy imo

It's a nice looking model, but I'll stick to my BLI. I must admit I'm not a big fan of Märklin/Trix locomotives. First off, they use metal gears, which is on a plus side really solid, but also super noisy. Second, the decoders used by Märklin/Trix is usually weirdly programmed and not of the best sound quality. I bought the Trix TGV speed record model a few years ago, and I was so disappointed by it after having tested it that I just put it back in it's box and left it there.

This loco is kinda a disappointment for $1,000. Yes, cosmetically it is accurate to the prototype, however, the sounds are HORRIBLY inaccurate. Why would a company put sounds of a non-articulated locomotive on a 4000 class?

Looks good, Sounds bad, but the Draw pull makes me speechless. Absolutely worse for such a heavy loco.

Sounds are completely wrong. If you are going to produce a locomotive with high quality details, make sure everything is correct. Plus $1,000 for a locomotive is just insanity. Stay with Athearn or BLI and save money.

How can manufacturer downgrade this loco with a such inaccurate toy whistle? The whistle of this loco is an icon like the loco herself!!! Shame on Märklin. Overpriced inaccurate model downgrading the beautiful real loco.
