That is a great experiment with the two anvils. It is good info for those who are looking for a basic, low price anvil. Also, blessings on you for sharing you shop and skills with teenagers.

If you take a flap wheel on a HF grinder, and round off the edges on the long corner of the anvil, you will stop getting chips knocked off the edges. It's, also called dressing the anvil. Doing the edges of the holes is good too. If you do the same to the hammers and smooth the faces, that's really nice too.. Fewer marks on the metal. This is called dressing the face of the hammer. Both are worth a Google, a cheap angle grinder from HF, and the pack of assorted wheels, including grinding, cutting and flap wheels. So worth it! You should also

Interesting, thanks. In the UK those would be known as ASOs - Anvil Shaped Objects. Very useful for DIY jobs or students but not made from the same type of hardened tool steel that a "real" anvil uses.

I am not claiming that Harbor Freight is the best money can buy, but it certainly has a place.
