THANK YOU for bringing attention to how this show animates battle damage. So many modern TV is scared to make the Transformers actually seem damaged. They get blasted with a fusion cannon and just have a black smudge on their model.
@PerspectiveEnd
@PerspectiveEnd Жыл бұрын
Well the thing is, it's actual work. The problem with Modern CGI is it's made to be Cheap, it's a lot easier to draw damage in Traditional animation, then it is to break the models you made in CGI. So when Damage happens in CGI it costs a lot more money than the company might be willing to spend.
@DiggitySlice
@DiggitySlice Жыл бұрын
It's a cool detail for sure, but the thing is there's more to animation than just that. What's the point of a character getting their arm cut off if all the animation leading up to it is stiff and unconvincing? I love Beast Wars but I object to battle damage being the only consideration

Rattrap's character evolution is probably the thing that surprised and pleased me the most, as he, even though plainly good guy, was a real bastard. Sure, he kept his antics and attitude, but gained sense of responsibility and camaraderie. This season has that wonderful mist of mystery sorrounding it, as you described it. The monuments are wonderful plot device when we don't know who VOK are and the finale itself is just wonderful. I can't imagine being a kid back then reacting to Unicron's face emerging and all. Can't wait for you to review season 2 which has probably my favourite arc right at the start - coming of the fuzors.
@PerspectiveEnd

Absolutely. Rattrap does mature a lot during the show. It's true what they say about the less you know the better. Nothing will ever be as compelling as trying to figure out stuff you don't understand. Unfortunately you will have to wait a while, this isn't like the "Week of Reviewing Beast Wars" or anything.

All of the 3 original beast wars seasons are masterpieces imo, great characters with a lot of personality, interesting plot, one of the best villains ever, and it doesn't overstay its welcome. I also like how they weren't afraid to make the show good because modern cartoons drop quality for entertainment (doesn't work) but beast wars show you can have both. The animation holds up surprisingly well imo, the backgrounds kind of suck but the characters are great, also I'm pretty sure this was the 2nd completed 3d cartoon ever. The designs are also amazing, wide range of colors and looks, glad they redesigned the animation models to not look exactly like the toys. The story is great and everything that happens was clearly planned from the get go. Beast wars is one of the only cartoons I can comfortably say is a 9(or even 9.5)/10, only bad element is like 2 characters aren't very good but they get rid of them early on.

It was not all plotted, from the start. There's commentary & online sources about it. First off, the writers knew nothing, NOTHING about Transformers. They went to old online bulletinboards & early TF websites (back when dial-up was the only way to get online - the early internet), & talked to fans, to get brought up to speed on G1. I think this went on upto the very end. 2nd, some of the artifacts/ landmarks you see early on, like The Standing Stones, were put there solely to get you thinking, & later were cleverly recycled into disguised alien tech. They did things that let it look planned, without the planning, & have admitted as much themselves. Transmetals & Fuzors were a mandate from Hasbro, because new toys, & Waspinator was planned to die in the lava, during the Quantum Surge, but fans loved the universe's chew toy too much, so Terrorsaus & Scorponok took his place. Some of the fans they talked to online made it into the show as references (sector names) & Easter eggs (translatable alien text spelling their name, as examples). One or 2 made it into the credits, listed as consultants, even. The whole thing leading up to the discovery of The Ark was kinda happy accidents that can fit together to do that, as the writers learned more about Transformers, & sprinkling references in. Now, from the discovery of the Ark onward could've been planned. But at least season one & much of season 2 was basically adlibbed by the writers, as they learned on the fly & adapted to corporate mandates. It makes it more amazing non-Transformers writers crafted such a fluid story, while learning about the topic, as they went. And that some of this stuff became canon, like the entire concept of Sparks. Important SPOILERS BELOW - deleted episode info below Even the oddity of Dinobot II regaining the original's honor had an explanation (it wasn't meant to be out of nowhere), but that episode was scrapped, probably due to budget, sadly. (Short version, Dinobot made a copy of his memories, a few episodes before Code of Hero -he knew stopping Megatron would be a suicide mission, days or weeks, before- & in the deleted ep., Rattrap goes on a mission to upload it into Dinobot II. He thought it had failed, until Rampage's half of the spark was destroyed).

Absolutely, Beast Wars was the full package. I can say that I wish we had just a bit more, but nothing of consequence. The plot we had was almost perfect.

IMO, Beast Wars was the PERFECT sequel show to the original The Transformers, keeping what worked about that series, replacing the choppy outsourced animation with timeless and smooth CG animation, and also adding in a focus on a select cast of characters, meaning everyone gets equal amounts of attention and everyone has a role to play! I mean, sure, other TF shows have come and left their mark of quality (namely Animated and Prime, though Armada and Cybertron have their cult followings), but Beast Wars was the first truly great Transformers show. And it deserves to also be recognised for that.

As any of you who choose to give this awesome show a chance, just remember to take a moment to appreciate the talent of the voice actors. Coincidentally, McNeil also voiced several characters in ANOTHER popular robot-based franchise, of the Japan-originated variety: Mobile Suit Gundam. Specifically, he voiced Duo from New Mobile Report Gundam Wing and Teniente Reed in the original show, the former easily being the more recognisable of the two characters. I'm a Gundam fan (the main Mobile Suit Gundam franchise all the way, though I have blacklisted one show and considering blacklisting another, newer one) so I think it was worth mentioning considering that both properties share a noteworthy voice actor.

@@PaleoAnalysis Nice to see you remember the Ocean dub of DBZ! That dub had a unique history, in that it was funded by no less a company than FUNimation (now Crunchyroll), who picked Z after a first attempt at a dub of Dragon Ball didn't do well. Needless to say, once Z began airing on Cartoon Network's Toonami block, FUNimation realised they had a surprise sleeper hit on their hands and proceeded to dub not just the remaining episodes of Z with in-house actors, but also make a second, far more successful dub of Dragon Ball.

I honestly forgot that the show had “bad” animation is the first five mins of the first episode, not even the third. Plus I’m a retro sucker. I love bad, old, charming stuff, like 80s movies where every sound effect was off and recycled throughout every movie in that era. We all remember that classic gunshot that’s just an explosion for a sound effect or whenever someone gets punched it sounds like someone punched a large piece of meat or a pile of fruit. I’m grateful that you and Jobby convinced me to watch the show. I grew up with Prime, so I have a nostalgia for it and I still consider BW better.
@PerspectiveEnd
@PerspectiveEnd Жыл бұрын
Hey! 80s Movies weren't bad! Also explosions do sound more like Gunshots then they do a big Raging fire. The reason movie ones tend to sound like fire, is because they do Explosions with large piles of gas and not actual explosives. Anyways I'm proud to have been even part of the reason you picked up Beast Wars. Glad you were able to enjoy the animation.

Beast wars season 1 was basically two seasons, and it was awesome. But I’d say season 2 was a masterpiece. Three wasn’t as good overall but I think by the time of the finale it was a proper ending and pretty epic. If it wasn’t for Hasbro executive meddling Beast Wars (and Beast Machines) would have been absolutely legendary, not just in transformers but in pop culture as a whole. The cast and crew that worked on this labor of love were certainly talented enough.

As a writer myself, beast wars is one of the most well written, acted, and everything in betweened show. It has and always will be a golden standard for television. You know I hate when people say that animation can’t be as good/complex as live action because I’ve seen quite a few and my favorite shows, (Ignoring Community, The Good Place, Brooklyn 99 and FRIENDS) have been animated. Animation just gives so mush creative freedom and character, yet most adults just brush it off as for kids. Everything from ONE (KZfaq by cheesyHFJ), Rick and morty, infinity train, she-ra and potp (the newer one is better) gravity falls, hell most of Pixar evokes an emotional response far greater than most. Also if you read this rant?, and didn’t recognize any of the shows go and watch them, they are amazing. Beast wars is the show that made me appreciate hard work in tv, and if you look at the writing teams process they had no clue what the story would be and still made the best peice of media hasbro has ever made.

Beast Wars was one of the most formative and influence shows to my pre-adolescent self. Optimus Primal full-on shaped the kind of leader I have strived to be throughout my adult life. I regularly state that my "Code for Management" is Primal's "I will not give an order I would not be willing to do myself," and have even told my staff as such. Dinobot and Silverbolt shaped and modeled the type of person I'd eventually become (confusing-to-define-yet-rigid honor code, bit of a hero complex, prone to silly if poignant statements, and more than willing to aggressively cut someone that offends). Rampage and Depth Charge modeled and taught me how unchecked rage and obsession harm you. It's just such a damn good show. I constantly force it on people, to their begrudging benefit.

Beast Wars is probably my favourite transformers show, it has a special place in my heart because it’s the first TF show i discovered on my own, my mum is a child of the 80’s and I had DVDs and VHS of G1 and I loved G1 and transformers so I went on the internet to get more Transformers, then I discovered BW and it fascinated by the animal designs, the CG animation, the standout voice acting, likeable / iconic characters, and the cool plot. I'm mainly (but not only) a fan of the G1 characters. Here's why I don't get why some G1 fans still hate Beast Wars to this day: 1) Beast Wars didn't take anything away from G1. It ties in with it, adding things to it. You don't like those things? Ignore them. 2) All the CHUG and Masterpiece toys of G1 characters you're getting? They wouldn't have been there without Beast Wars. Beast Wars was the incarnation of the franchise that proved once and for all that Transformers was a franchise that was viable beyond its original run. Without it no generations, no studio series, no Dreamwave Comics, no IDW, no Transformers: Devastation. G1 survives today BECAUSE Beast Wars managed to revive the franchise in the 90s and carried it through the decade. 3) Don't compare it to G1, watch it as a self-contained show. It's brilliant. It has some of the best and most consistent writing of any Transformers cartoon. I'd love a G1 cartoon that was written by the team behind Beast Wars as they obviously respect the G1 mythos - which is evidenced by how they included it in Beast Wars. Give me that, with some cell-shaded animations instead of the textured CGI of the Netflix series to capture the almost anime-like quality that G1 had, and I'd be super happy.
@PerspectiveEnd
@PerspectiveEnd 3 күн бұрын
1 Yes Absolutely, and what it adds isn't even offensive. Like it Added Sparks, which I've never seen a word against. It added an Escape shuttle to the arc that never gets brought up. And it explains what happened to the Nemesis, and why we never saw it again. Outside of that G1 is basically unchanged. 2 Again you are on point, G2 is Fake, it's not a thing, it's just G1 again with new commercial breaks, and that's it. Beast Wars kicked the Franchise back into overdrive, and it wouldn't be as popular again for like a decade. 3 I too would love to see that. Though half of it is I'd just love to see the old animation style back with modern consistency and skill. Like a "What If" of the universe where the 86 movie was the way the show actually looked.

I totally relate to your opinion of Episode 1's intro. When my older cousin first introduced me to beast wars, I immediately fell in love with that first five minutes of the show. It's one of my all time favorite intros. Also, funny story about my Transformers family dynamic, my dad was an 80's kid and grew up with G1. So naturally, he introduced me to Transformers through the 86 movie which both blew my mind and scared me for life as a 4 year old. A bit later, my cousin who was a 90's kid grew up with Beast Wars and introduced me to the series. I loved it but my dad was one of those old timers who thinks Beast Wars was stupid and G1 was better. So there's been this continual argument between my dad and cousin any time we talk about Transformers where they hash out which series is the best, and meanwhile, I'm just like "I love them both."

Yeah WFC, Energon and Cybertron definitely are inferior but I will argue on the behalf of Prime. There were dozens of times characters got torn apart by one another in a fight. Though that was mainly the vehicons getting the brunt of it but named characters had it too Hardshell- a hole was blasted into his chest after being shot by Miko unsung Wheeljacks ship Dreadwing- Megatron put a hole in his chest , which the camera zooms down to show, for attempting to murder Starscream Skyquake- Bumblebee tore his circuits out whilst he was flying and he lost his arm when he became a zombie Cliffjumper- Starscream stabbed him in the chest which left a visible hole in it before getting sliced in half by Megatron when he became a zombie Bumblebee- shot in the chest three times by Megatron and it killed him (before being revived by the plot). Had his T-cog stolen by M.E.C.H. with the process being similar to someone forcefully ripping out your liver. Starscream- literally had the shit kicked outta him so bad by Megatron that he was on life support for a bit. He lost his arm and his T-cog Megatron- his space bridge literally blew up pint blank in his face and was stuck on life support for like half of season 1. Prime sliced off his arm and he was finally killed when Bumblebee stabbed him in the chest Ultra Magnus- got out on life supports thanks to the predacons Prime- dude loved liked a week before dying after being hit by the giant ass gun on the Nemesis when it shot the base which is the equivalent of having you house set on fire with you still inside it only to be barely alive with third degree burns. Breakdown- oh Christ poor Breakdown. Dude was literally torn to shreds by Black Arachnia in season two only to be used as a life support unit by Silas. Then he was turned into a zombie and torn apart by Black Arachnia AGAIN Predaking- after being wounded by Megatron, he has a visible scar on his chest and was bleeding for some time after Cybertron was revived Vehicons and Insecticons- oh these poor guys. Dudes have been sliced in half, exploded, incinerated, used as bats to beat one another up, had their circuits torn out of their bodies, hands crushed into paste, turned into vampire zombies. You name it, it most likely happened to them. To say there is no gore is Prime is flat out false and I will die on that hill.
@PerspectiveEnd
@PerspectiveEnd Жыл бұрын
Here's the thing, I wasn't trying to argue that there is no gore in that, but look at all your examples. Prime treats each and every one of those like a BIG deal right, they will either have episodes built around those injuries, they are send offs for characters who die, or like Magnus they change the character for the rest of the series. So for Prime Damage is a Treat that you get on a special occasion. Beast wars treated injuries like what you should expect from a fight scene.

Love them or hate them, this is actually what the japanese G1 continuity does with Beastwars II and Beasts Neo, and Car robots, who are all part the same continuity. The earth in beastwars 2 is called Gaia and takes place hundreds of thousands of years in the future when humans have abandoned it. @@PerspectiveEnd fr! My thoughts exactly. I actually have yet to play Infinite. I’ve spared myself of any spoilers. I really hope it’s similar to that of all the good stuff from the Bungie days. With ofc 343’s creative ideas mixed in. :)) just keep the Elites from looking like they should be called Brutes for Christ’s sake lol

The limb blowing off thing is cool, but I think the reason that doesn’t happen much in prime is because limbs are hareder to just replace

It's what got me back into Transformers in my 20s when it aired on Fox Kids. I think I've said it before, but hearing about it, I did go, "Truck Not Monkey." A friend sent me "Optimal Situation" in 99 and it impressed me. I was home on break when BW hit Fox Kids and, when I went back to classes, I got every VHS cassette I could to record the episodes.

People keep comparing Beast Wars to WFC because of the animation, but they don't notice that the characters have so much emotion and are very expressive, they specifically gave everyone a mouth (even the toys who didn't have a mouth) to make them so expressive, while in the WFC they all look like 😐 90% of the time

Yeah, people are easily Tricked by the Razzle Dazzle of moody dynamic raytraced lighting, so they think it's better than Nuts and bolts animated performance.

I won't argue about anything other than animation, as I'm yet to watch the show, probably the plot is great, as many people love it, so there should be a good reason for that, and I do like a few designs, but you can't be serious when saying its animation is better than Prime's or even WfC Trilogy. About not noticing it in a few episodes, sure, I can believe that, and it probably was revolutionary for the time, but when you put them side by side it's not even close, it's noticeable without any equipment. Also, battle damage isn't a thing that animation is judged on, that's just what happens to the characters, not how it looks, but even if that's the case, Prime and other modern Tf shows have many examples of good BD, such as the dismantling of terrorcons, Megatron blowing up after space bridge contact, Breakdown's eye surgery, Skyquake's state after Bumblebee rips out his organs in jet mode, Airachnid disassembling Breakdown, Megatron vs Insecticon, Cliffjumper's death by Starscream's claws, Dreadwing's hole in the chest moment, Optimus' look after the base got destroyed, Megatron losing an arm, Predaking's wound after his fight with Megatron, Starscream losing an arm, and last but not least, a billion Steves getting killed in most gruesome way possible, maybe slightly rarer than in BW, but still on point. And, as I mentioned earlier, this applies to Animated and Cyberverse as well, just took Prime as an example, because this is the only series that I remember everything about without rewatching.

Ok, so I wasn't fully making the Argument that it is Better than primes, simply that it was of Higher effort. Prime cuts a TON of corners you don't really notice if you aren't an animator, and really does prime look better on a modeling front. Ask your self that, how, in what way are the models of prime better, and the answer is for the most part they aren't, what really is an improvement in Prime is the lighting, Raytracing didn't exist back when Beast Wars was made, and just lighting was really in general pretty primitive back then. And good lighting is a big deal. And about the injuries, The hole in dread wings chest is the send off for the entire character, something they could justify spending a higher budget on working on. Its telling that starscreams arm coming off was considered a BIG EFFORT deal considering they built an entire episodes plot around it. Breakdown was also a send off, but it also wasn't done live, you only see the after math of it which is easy to do. And sure Cliffjumper dies and all that, but that's actually what the character was built around. That was his WHOLE point. And he was designed during the initially modeling faze which means that they made him at the time it would be cheapest to do alterations like that.

One of my favorite things about this show is that it is not a "real" war. It's a ragtag group of blue collars pulled into stopping a madman and his group of misfits from changing everything they know and love. Now it's always just "Robo-WW2" and I'm so tired of Autobots vs Decepticons and everyone being a battle-hardened grim fest. I'd like to see another series in the future with an uneasy peace between the two being threatened by an OUTSIDE enemy for once, but stuff like that requires good writing.
@PerspectiveEnd

Yeah, despite the title, it's really just a rag tag group of people who were forcibly deputized trying to capture some criminals. As a kid, it really did feel like a war to me, but it's the furthest thing from it.

Ah yes, Beast Wars. This is the show that I think rescued Transformers from 80's obscurity. Ok, maybe not obscurity, but this brought it back. To me (also being a Star Trek fan), this was Transformers: The Next Generation. I was there watching G1 when it was airing. And what I am about to say may be sacrilege, but I think Beast Wars was a better show. I really loved how character driven this show is, and how it works with it's own continuity, respects the source material (gasp! How dare they not tear down and demean the original characters, like they do in films today), all whike giving us a good overall plot, and still be entertaining to kids, but not insult the intelligence of adults. And yes, season 3 had that questionable misinterpretation of a well known maguffin. But thus show was so good, but that just makes me loath Beast Machines that much more. Anyway, thanks for the review.

Absolutely, Transformers would be a Ghost of it self right now were it not for Beast Wars. And yes, it's nice to see a serries revival that doesn't feel like it hates it's source material. You are welcome.

My point was that Beast Wars treated physical damage as what should be expected of combat. Prime treated it like it was a treat. This battle is unique because someone took a real injury.

When you were comparing the BW animation to TFP, it’s also important to note TFP’s animators went over budget (or at least pretty close to doing so). Even then, TFP still looks pretty iffy in some scenes.
@PerspectiveEnd

Which just means that their Budget was Trash, like the Per Episode on that had to be miserable. Like the Fact that Dreadwing was just Blue Skyquake with 0 changes really shows how little the must have gotten. They must have made Skyquake on the promise that even though it was going to get killed off in one episode they were going to reuse it later in the series.
@dippy_1999
@dippy_1999 Жыл бұрын
Or they had no idea how to spend their money and thus blew it quickly. Afterwards, they realized that killing Skyquake off was a stupid idea that wasted a whole bunch of money and tried to cover it up by saying he had a twin brother completely identical to him that was conveniently never talked about before. Just another one of TFPs many blunders.
