In 1987 we all thought THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS was a breadth of fresh air. Audiences really appreciated how seriously Dalton took the role. He grounded the films. I saw it the first day of release on the big screen

Timothy Dalton is a great Bond, and The Living Daylights is one of my personal Top 5 James Bond movies!

He's my favorite James Bond. My admiration only grew after reading the Fleming novels. All the other actors had their version of Bond... Dalton did Fleming's version of James Bond!

I love both of Dalton's Bond films. And Carey Lowell is my favourite ever Bond girl.

'The Living Daylights' is essentially a re-working of 'From Russia With Love' in terms of the core plot. A senior KGB official defects to a criminal organisation, which plays the British & Russian intelligence services against each other for their own purposes. The Bond girl is loyal to the KGB officer without knowing their true agenda. Bond both manipulates and falls in love with the Bond girl, while suspecting he is being drawn into a trap. The stakes in both films boil down to Bond and the girl having to keep one step ahead of the plot of the villains. The decoding machine and the various money laundering/weapons buying/drug smuggling aren't really what is at stake. We even get specifics like a drink being drugged. The script for 'T.L.D.' doesn't mechanically re-cycle 'F.R.W.L'. It does put new spins on various plot elements and invert others, so Maibaum & Michael Wilson still put a lot of thought into the various elements and genuinely tried to come up with a worthwhile new adventure.

Have commented every time Timothy Daltons name is brought up in relation to Bond… He’s up there as the best.. second only to Connery.

When I was a kid, Timothy Dalton was a punchline. As the son of a Moore Fan, I for a while I only saw him as 007. Yet as a teenager - my opinion began to change. I wondered "what's everyone's problem with Dalton?" Especially after I read a couple of Fleming's novels his portrayal grew on me. Then came Daniel Craig (I loved Casino Royale) and I realized that - while they're not exactly the same - Dalton was ahead of his time! He did dark edgy before it was cool. Luckily, more people seem to have come to appreciate his portrayal. When he showed up and stole the show in Hot Fuzz I began to point out to people, " Hey this guy was Bond, check his films out!" Many people I recommended his films to thanked me! Sad we did not get longer with him.

Dalton has been my favorite Bond for 20 years now (when I was a teenager). I loved how lethal and lived-in he felt, as find John Glen’s direction to be my most rewatchable in the series. There’s a lot of nuance that Dalton brought to the role which is why TLD has been my favorite Bond movie for a long time. Thankfully he’s getting his re-appraisal after the (failure?) of the Craig Era

Honestly I think Kara throws bond off balance which is why she’s great. Daltons hardness is ultimately shaken by her softness and innocence. I think she absolutely works in this movie. Great video! Dalton should have had one more movie!

I’m around David’s age and I can recall how much I loved Dalton and “Daylights” because I remember how unconnected I had become with last few Moore films. To me, Dalton brought back my enthusiasm for Bond after I saw it at the movie. It’s a little uneven but come on, the first half of the movie is top notch.

Dalton was far and away better than Brosnan and Craig, He had he dangerous edge of Connery, natural swagger and charisma. Lazenby was also his own man, Moore just oozed charm, The other guys Brosnan and Craig had to act it, TD just has it like Connery. Men can't fake that stuff. Its' like th way Craig deliberately stands with legs wide apart in every scene, he looks like he's putting it in. Compare that to Dalton in the tram in TLD, he just has it. I think that TLD up to the afghan airbase is superb but the last 30 min are slow. LTK Is great and very under appreciated and Dalton is fantastic. For the record, Dalton is my book Bond. That is my benchmark. Great video David!

In 86 I was glad Dalton landed the role , I thought Pierce was just a TV actor at the time not movie material. I was proved wrong.

Timothy Dalton is really cool. From reading alot of the novels so far I personally really picture Dalton or Craig as the most flemming bond.

The Living Daylights is a classic espionage movie with a wholesome love arc. Maybe Kara Milovy seemed a bit dispensable asset to Bond, but imo she's suppoused to be out of place, fragile and a bit naive. She's not a part of this world, she's a normal girl, and maybe that's what attracting, she reminded Bond of simple life. About Koskov and Whitaker - they're okay, I guess, but the roles could have been done better. License to Kill on the other hand is a heavy movie, even for Bond standards - people die in gruesome ways, Bond behaves like a merciless killer. Great movie, although it seems like a spinoff to the main series. If you look at Dalton, he was brilliant in both, he simply remade the role. He felt like a guy who can infiltrate the area, do the mission and come back to the casino for bakarat. He would charm, but he was a gritty, serious man, he would kill you if you stood in the way, and even lucklusting sense of humor was on parr with the overall peformance (Bond is not a crystal clear guy). Third movie would be great.

Two thoroughly likeable people. Love the chat! These two films - and Dalton in the role - have grown on me, massively, over recent years. And you both eloquently touch on the reasons why. 👏🏼

First of all - Marissa is a GREAT guest - very natural on camera with fresh and insightful opinions - you really should have her on more often! My daughters are both around her age and her opinions are pretty close to theirs. (Craig is their Bond as well!) Timothy Dalton really was ahead of his time. And coming after the light comedy of Roger, audiences were just not ready for him. But you can completely see what a huge influence he was on both Brosnan and Craig. They are both clearly taking that serious baton from him and running with it into their respective eras - both with more success than Dalton because he had basically paved the way for them both! But I do see her point - he is definitely not as warm and likable as the other actors who play James Bond. Even surrounded by the over the top nature of The Living Daylights, he is so intense that it does not quite completely match the larger than life elements in the film. However - I still love that movie! And I still like it better than Licence to kill, simply because it feels much more like a Bond film than Licence does. Terrific analysis - with lots of fresh takes!

The reason I don't like License to Kill is that it feels like it was just trying to ride the Miami Vice wave. Living Daylights has always been a favourite for me! And that tune... WHeeeeeEEEEEREE HAS EVERYBODY GOOOONNNEEEE??!

Ill stand up for Kara. First, why does every bond girl need to be this bond-equal, love of his life person. I think its interesting she is koskov’s girl at the beginning. She is holding the rifle at the start of the film, betrays bond at the hotel when she finds out, gets the taliban to help bond and even attacks the airport base. I also think its cool she plays an instrument. Underrated character

Loved this deep dive into the Dalton films. I think Dalton's performances were outstanding, and Living Daylights is virtually the opposite of License to Kill in tone and substance. I can only imagine what he would have done with a movie like On Her Majesty's Secret Service (or something with those emotional stakes). I can't wait to see you both dig into Brosnan.

I was 9 years old when TLD premiered in theaters back in summer of 1987. I loved the film! Timothy Dalton had such a commanding presence as Bond, and he never seemed inauthentic. Both of his films are in my Top 10 Bond film list. And speaking of a 3rd film, I would have been thrilled to see Dalton's take on Casino Royale, if the rights were available then?

I was a bit disappointed that Calvin wasn't here in this discussion but then I got excited that it was Marissa instead 😂 It's been long overdue to have her back on the channel! Dalton may not have been my ultimate favorite Bond (Brosnan is my fav), but both of his movies are definitely in my top 10

Part of why I consider both of these films to be very good, even putting Dalton aside, are the villians. As they said, Koskov is not the sort of guy who is going to fight a last stand action. Necros is one of the best henchmen. Apart from being super competant, he has his own agenda, almost unheard of. Where the Goldeneye trio are working together for the same goal, just with slightly differing reasons. Koskov, Brad and Necros have very seperate end goals, they are just getting towards them in a joint effort. Then Krest, is another non 'brave' guy. Zerbe is great at showing that Krest is REALLY uncomfortable around Sanchez, he's afraid of him, and he knows this guy can and will turn on a dime. Again we get disunity with Heller, and Sanchez giving up on showing loyalty to others with Lodge, but we also get fanatic devotion from Dario and some of the others. And Davi, really can't be praised enough. Personally, he and Frobe are in a neverending grapple for best main Bond villian. What helps both him and Krabbe, but specially him, is he gets a lot of screen time, during which he gets to breathe as a character. They are both also sane villians, making them more relatable and human. Close by (chronologically) we get some very off their meds and over the top villains (Looking at you Zorin and Carver), so Dalton's enemies are a nice dip into a world where bad guys don't have to be frothing (overacting) lunatics, nothing against how enjoyable and charasmatic Walken is. The biggest single ding is Dalton's hair in the second film, and if that's the big sin, then obviously I'm in the bag for Timmy D, yes, I'll give you that one David! (Also, I know many would reserve their big ding for 'Ninjas', and yes, corny and a bit silly. But, it serves what I think is a really nice purpose. And that is to show that Bond REALLY screws up, he costs the lives of half a dozen odd allied agents. In the entire series, this could well be Bond's biggest screwup. Bond is falable. Revenge has a cost, and not just on the soul of the one seeking it).

It's wonderful that Marissa is back and to hear her points so clearly, charmingly & cogently argued. How boring it would be, if we all thought the same. She's damn right about Robert Davi and Carey Lowell. I prefer The Living Daylights because the early Bratislava scenes, as well as the defection, have more 'Cold War espionage' atmosphere about them. I feel Bond, as a character, often seems to be an SOE agent, where Britain is already at war & the mission is to destroy an enemy installation - hence the many villains' lairs. I've always enjoyed Bond but in 1984, aged 12, I watched 'The Spy who came in from the Cold' and that resonated with my fears & felt more real. Also, I grew up with Russia having invaded Afghanistan and the Mujahideen fighters (Tajik & Uzbek) resisting the invasion. N. B. They are NOT the Taliban, who emerged later and were drawn from the Pashtun. I always felt Cameron Shah's inspiration may be Ahmed Shah Masoud 'the lion of the Panshir', whom the Taliban killed just before the Al-Quaida attack on America. So I've never had a problem with The Living Daylight's plot. Kara's character - the pure soul as pawn, is a character type in 'Ashenden', Le Carre and John Buchan. Anyway, hope you keep doing what you're doing & thank you for the enthusiasm & optimism you bring to Bond.

I’ve always liked the Living Daylights & Licence to Kill. I was surprised to find that the Dalton era wasn’t looked upon very favourably although that does seem to be changing nowadays.

Great points from Marissa and David. I think future Bond girls (both good and bad) who tend to be more physical in regards to fighting/action would add spice to future installments, beautiful and elegant yet ferocious and deadly. Koskov came across as a bit of a campy villain who would have been fitting for Roger Moore similar to Le Chiffre being perfect as the main antagonist for Craig's Bond. Enjoyed Key West's scenic beauty in License To Kill, spent a few days there with two herniated discs in my back and still had the time of my life!

License to Kill was the first Bond film that came out when I was old enough to watch Bond films, I had just started watching some of the old ones on TV at the time and me and my buddy were very excited to see this new one. It was perhaps a bit serious for us at that age (around 9-10) but we loved it.

The Living Daylights is in my top Four. Love the film. Incredible pre-title sequence. Love Daltons Bond in this. Bond in Pushkins hotel room, is for me the best Flemmingesque Bond on screen. The way Bond easily dispatches Pushkins guard, without making noise, smashing the hotel room apart, is Flemming Bond. A true assasin. Necros is a great Henchman, the Sony Walkman use , made him genuinely scary, tough. My only gripe with it is, Whittaker had far to little screen time. He was developed through dialogue. Whittaker is the opposite of Rennard. Rennard was built up as this scary villian, yet his showdown with Bond was weak. Whittakers war room, was brilliant. The strobes, the weaponry, body armor, it made for one of my favorite Bond- Villian showdowns. Bond was at a disadvantage in there. He had to use his wits, gadget to escape. Whittakers quips at Bond we’re so cool, in that scene. Like” should have known you’d take refuge behind that British vulture Wellington”, “ you had your eight, now have my eighty”. I really love this showdown. But he needed more screen time. The idea of Arms dealer, using raw opium to profit, was brilliant for the time. I loved Kamran Shaw. One of my favorite Bond Allie’s. The Mujahideen were newsworthy then. Kira was a good Bond girl. Different in she was tagging along, but that made her real. She fit the time then. This film was written when The AIDS epidemic was huge. They wrote Kara this way because of that. Had Bond use her to get to Koskov, and not sleep with women throughout. So it worked for me, she is a different Bond girl. And Bonds quip to Kara - Kara “ we’re free”, Bond “ Kara we’re stuck in a Russian airbase in the middle of Afghanistan”. Great line. Whittaker is an Arms dealer. He uses Pushkins Russian money for arms, to get diamonds. Then smuggle them into Afghanistan, to trade for Raw Opium, which he would make millions in NYC streets. Then give Pushkin his arms, while making a huge profit from the Opium. For the eighties, this is a brilliant Villian. Yeah Living Daylights is very down to earth for Bond film. Liscense was way to Miami Vice for me. It just felt like the show. Sanchez is a Vice type villian.

Roger was my Bond. And I loved him. Spy was the first Bond film I saw on TV. Octopussy was the first I saw at the cinema. For some reason that I don't recall I did not see AVTAK at the cinema. So my 2nd Bond film at the cinema was Daylights. And I was sold immediately on Dalton. This was a Bond that meant business. I have to agree with Marisa. When Dalton's Bond says he's going to kill I BELIEVE it. He also comes across as the most "spy" of all the actors. He's so believable. Daylights is a good later day Cold War thriller. As for LTK being an "80s action film" (meaning it involves coke), for the previous decade the Bond films were copying what was big at the time. L&LD had blaxploitation. Golden Gun had martial arts. Moonraker was Star Wars. The early 80s films were influenced by Reagan/Thatcher Cold War. And yes, LTK followed the 80s action films dealing with drugs. So LTK's drug story didn't bother me. Dalton was ahead of his time.

My first Bond film was Diamonds that my pop took me to as a pre-teen. I was hooked! I couldn’t initially understand why my dad was kind of “meh” about the film until later on when I saw the earlier films. But Connery was and remains my favorite Bond. I like them all, but Sir Sean rocks.

Great analysis of TLD by Marissa. I'm 53, so Dalton was the first Bond I'd call mine, but TLD suffers from weak bad guys, an uneven complex plot, and a weak Bond "girl"

I'm closer to David's age, so when I saw Dalton, it was a colder, darker Bond interpretation, but closer to Ian Fleming. Coming off of the campiness of Roger Moore, it's not a surprise Dalton's Bond got panned. But he's a great classically trained actor, he was physical in the Bond films, and I'm glad history is coming round to his Bond more now.

License to kill is a good film. It's the first Bond film that can be watched since Sean Connery (although many Bond films with Connery are really bad).

First and foremost, thank you for doing this! Full disclosure: TD’s movies are my 3rd and 2nd ranked Bond movies after Casino Royale. I must disagree regarding the chemistry between TD and MD. I’ve always believed that they had the most genuine chemistry of all of the Bond pairings. MD’s character is simply a damsel in distress, but she does eventually figure out what is going on. She falls for her hero and he melts to eventually care for her. However, I did hate the “flying the airplane into a mountain” bit. Please. TLD is unnecessarily complicated and TD does not do well with Roger Moore moments. I love the grittiness of LTK and TD is smoking hot in it!! I so wish it had a higher production value. I dream of it with a budget similar to Casino Royale. TD was better in LTK because the script wasn’t originally written for Roger Moore. Loving Marissa!

Wow, some of this was really rough to listen to. I think this does show a huge difference in how generations watch movies. At 16 I understood the plot of The Living Daylights just fine. I saw the connection of the villains clearly. I understood the Russian presence. But I grew up watching complicated movies, even reruns of old black and white movies. Alfred Hitchcock, big epics that took hours to unfold. I learned to watch and wait and all would be explained. The younger generation wants to know what's going on right away, no patience to let something unfold. And if they don't know right away their minds wander, and they start thinking things such as, hey, they look like this other actor. You see it in reviews of movies by this younger generation as well. They don't want a movie over 1.5 hours, it's too long , they could have cut things out. When I show an older movie to my kids, now in their twenties, I still have to keep saying, just wait, watch they will explain. They are of a generation that needs instant gratification and instant explanations. And too often I see the younger generation just tune out if they don't get that and they blame the script or plot, when really it seems like it's their own lack of patience and actually not knowing how to watch an older movie.

I've always really liked both Dalton films, too. The Living Daylights is actually the first Bond film I saw in the theater at the time of its original release. I was still only in middle school at the time.

LTK is my fourth favorite. My only regrets are the ninjas and that Bond didn't clean break Sanchez to immobility, verbally rebuke him, slow smoke a cigarette, show him the lighter, and then torch him.

I'm 23 and i had the license to kill DVD in my childhood. I did not like at all at the time because i was into Roger Moore, but rewatching it now, i absolutely love this movie and i think it's one of their bests. Yes, it looks like miami vice but guess what? Who cares. Nobody does it better than Bond

I enjoyed both Dalton films. I believe he pulled the range arc of serious, camp in TLD better than Craig in Spectre. I also loved LTK and is #3 in my top 10. LTK keeps you engaged and moves along at a good pace, and Sanchez is the best villain and most real villain. Zorin will always be my fav, but Sanchez is my second fav. It's a shame Dalton didn't get a chance to do more as he was better as Bond than Craig was.

I actually think Dalton in TLD is peak bond, he is 90% serious/ruthless but that 10% of camp just works so well for me. It probably also explains why I love FYEO as that is 'his campness' Roger Moore at his most serious ending up in a similar take on the character. Another through-line of these two films are the weaker villains, I just don't think a weaker villain necessarily invalidates a good bond film. As for Kara, I think she is perfect for the role she is in, she is the ying to bond's yang...which basically means she is a naive girl. The payoff is how they rub off on each other and are better for it at the end.

He’s my favourite and so underrated! Maybe I’m biased as they were the first Bonds I got to see in the cinema, until Craig I think he was the closest to Flemmings books.

i would have thought David would have better information. He claims Licence to Kill was made by the same people who made Miami Vice, including the music. The music of Miami Vice was done by Jan Hammer and Tim Truman. Michael Kamen did the music for LTK, and it's nothing like Miami Vice. Alec Mills was the cinematographer, and he'd shot previous Bond films. I dont know of anyone from Miami Vice who worked on LTK, Miami Vice was in production at the time so i don't know how that would have been possible. Although the two properties have been compared because of the drug smuggling plot, Miami Vice wasn't your run of the mill tv production, as it had very cinematic qualities. Also as far as The Living Daylights, it's been reported many times that they wrote the script 'middle of the road' because they didn't know who the actor would be as Moore left the role in the fall of 85'

A good episode and Marissa is welcome back. Dalton is my favourite Bond and so wish he had made a third.

As a Dalton fan, this was a very enjoyable discussion about the movies and Dalton as Bond. Only thing missing would have been get both your opinions on the theme songs for both. Especially The Living Daylights Theme by Aha.

A villain can be nefarious with very little screentime. Just ask Dr No and Blofeld in FRWL, Thunderball, and YOLT.

12:00 and 22:40 the Puskhin interrogation scene is by far the best scene for Dalton in the Living Daylights. He acts just like a professional assasin.

Dalton should have started his bond run in 1981 with for your eye's only,his my favourite bond and should have been the 80s bond

I'm a fan of Timothy Dalton. He was the first Bond that wanted to get away from the more light hatred Moore Bond and get back to the original Fleming character. At the time, unfortunately Dalton's portrayal did not go down well with the public, in terms of box office sales. In my opinion, Dalton made the way for a more aggressive Bond, such as Craig.

In my opinion, both movies have theirs trenghts and weaknesses: TLD is more Bond classic spy story, it had better love story, LTK had better villains, more suspence..i love both of them for different reasons..and the whole realisitc Bond, no Bond movie is realistic, more serious is not nesseseraly more realistic

I remember in the tie in 25th anniversary show ['Happy birthday 007'] Dalton is described as a 'London stage actor' [Patrick Stewart said in his recent autobiography the cast joked at him being referred as an 'unknown stage actor' in the press when Star Trek TNG started]. I do think his lower film profile didn't help Dalton, espically in the USA [compared to Brosnan being the lead in a big American TV show] as probably his most mainstream role was a supporting part in Flash Gordon a few years prior. For whatever reason, Dalton hasn't appeared in a live action film since 'The Tourist' in 2010.

TLD(1987) & LTK(1989): a great Bond & a good Bond. TLD(1987) is like a great old Single (Barley)Malt Scotch Whisky. LTK(1989) is like a young cheap American Bourbon Whiskey. But I love them both! LTK(1989) is a good revenge movie! DAF(1971) should have been like LTK(1989)! ***** Timothy Dalton was great as James Bond, especially in TLD(1987) which is a classic gorgeous looking luxurious big budget James Bond film! 0.22: Probably the best movie poster ever!

Always been a fan of the Dalton films mainly because Dalton is my favourite Bond, but I remember back when "Casino Royale" came out is where the critical reappraisal for the Dalton films started to come forward and nowadays they have went through such reappraisal that I just don't think they can be labelled as underrated anymore as I know a few people who place one or both in their Top 5 with even some calling it their favourite. If only "Octopussy" could such critical reappraisal anytime soon....

Been a fan for a while, love the content. I have a challenge for you. This may have already been answered, but in Live and let die, M says the line “in future commander allow me to suggest a perfectly adequate watchmaker, just down the street”. Do we know what M was referring to?

There's a noticeable 'awkwardness' in trying to incorporate Dalton into the established film format. I'm a Dalton fan, but he wasn't prepared to adapt to all the demands of the film Bond. He wanted to play Bond without the humour and without the traditional 'charisma' established by Connery, including the body language. Dalton's body language is more tense and his demeanor is more strictly professional. I don't know if a third film would have seen the film makers and Dalton achieve a better blending of their styles. Maybe his two films were as far as his interpretation could go in the series.

Just the movie cover alone on "The Living Daylights" got me hooked! It's just a great James Bond movie with cool gadgets, ESPECIALLY that car on the frozen lake. I felt "License to Kill" didn't give me enough of the world hopping adventure feeling that "The Living Daylights" certainly did. Pierce Brosnan is my James Bond but I feel Timothy Dalton could honestly be a close 2nd. He was on of the last Bonds I visited and he definitely did not get the same level of respect as other actors in this universe. Great job on the video! Cheers from New England!

Was 'The Living Daylights' really written for Roger? Surely they didn't expect him to do another. He would have been 60 in 1987. Wasn't it a generic script while they re-cast or maybe even tailored towards Pierce who was first choice to take on the role?

I didn’t see TLD until the mid 2000s when I was a teen and it’s still one of my favorites. The villains are ok, the tone differs here and there, and Kara was Kara, but it’s one of those I can always go back to watch. LTK wasn’t for me. I’m not a fan of drug cartel movies or Miami Vice. I’m sure others mentioned it but Bond did explain that they were in a Russian controlled airbase in Afghanistan after taking out the jailer. Why they went there, specifically I’m not sure. It might have just been a case of Koskov(?) being friends with the head of the base.

Dalton is the best actor to tackle the role and he did two of the greatest movies in the series. Funny that what would have been Daltons third movie became Brosnans first amd best Bondmovie. And I dont agree on the thing about "The Bond you grow up with", because I grew up with Brosnan and he is not among my two favourote actors. The living daylights and Licence to kill have some of the greatest action scenes. Daltons has darkness in his face, and thats just about right for the character as written in the novels. Bond is NOT a hero. Kara is among the best Bondgirls in the series - much better than the girls in Skyfall and No time to die for sure. Severine in Skyfall doesn't move the plot anywhere. Kara had great chemistry with Dalton and the love story develops very naturally. Why is Koskov "over the top"? He is just very human and down to earth. Besides The Living Daylights has one of the best scores ever written for a movie.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again Dalton was a brilliant bond. The Living Daylights is an uneven film but it has its merits and was a good palette cleanser after Roger Moore. Licence to Kill was a solid film where Dalton really came into his own and put his stamp on bond. Also, about that 3rd Dalton bond film, I have read the script for the one written by Michael G Wilson and Alphonse Ruggerio (BOND 17 (1990) and I am thrilled to say it was awesome but at the same time I am sad that it was never made. There are robots in the story but they aren’t that fantastical. They are more like robots designed for specific work tasks and security operations and play a small role in the film. The only element that was a bit far fetched was a henchwoman named Nan (who turns out to be a cyborg) but if you can get past that the script is surprisingly tight. There’s even a subplot involving the dismantling of MI6 and the 00 section , which we see later on in Craig’s films. The tone of the script feels very similar to Goldeneye. There are one liners and they are pretty good actually, I don’t know how Dalton would’ve handled them though.

Some of your criticisms are somewhat understandable, but some are just downright easily dismantled. The film CLEARLY tells you that they end up in Afghanistan, as can by heard by Dalton's (to Bond fans) classic line: "Kara, we're on a Russian airbase in the middle of Afghanistan..." I also won't let the "tonal inconsistency" claim stand here. Sooo many Bond movies do that, quite successfully I might add. Yes, a couple of Dalton's attempted one liners fall flat, but I actually think him being this grouchy, serious Bond persona works really well in terms of comedy, since it contrasts to the more goofy situations he's being put in. In terms of Kara, I understand the criticism of her not having a lot of agency throughout 90% of the film. However, that makes it possible for her to have significant character development (which as much as I love Pam Bouvier, can not be found in that character), going from wide eyed and naive to an active part in climax. Not perfectly of course, she's still just a civilian and naturally doesn't know how to fly a plane, etc.

Dalton’s two portrayals are both top 5 James Bond actor performances. While LTK is not my favorite Bond film or even in my top 5, TD’s performance in LTK is the single performance that most resembles Ian Fleming’s Bond of the page.

I've also hoped EON will continue Daltons Bond somehow. Threw a comic book series...Or video game....Or an animated series like Star Wars does. Dalton has done voice acting. My dream is Dalton does an animated series which takes place between the 6 years betweeen Licence to Kill and Goldeneye. Itll never happen...but that's my dream.

And for example, the one thing that i don't lke abotu LTK, is Lupe(and she is certinly not the same as Kara, they both just are not strong girls, although, i would argue that they actually both are in their own ways), Pam os great, i do like her, she is also, like Kara in my top 10, but the romance did worked better in my mind in TLD..i also hate that forced love triangle..

I say this all the time: I used to like Licence To Kill more, now i like The Living Daylights.

License to Kill is one of my favs too.

Its forgotten now but Licence To Kill was such a cool movie when it was released in 89. It only disappointed at the US Box Office, it was a big hit in the UK & Europe & got many positive reviews.

When I was getting into Bond in the late 90's/early 2000's [i.e during the Brosnan era] Dalton wasn't viewed very highly and almost seemed to rival Lazenby as a 'forgotten Bond' [ITV in the UK did a 'top 10 Bond moments' [Best Ever Bond] and no Dalton clips were shown]. Maybe it's because the Craig films were successful with it's serious tone and home media meaning Dalton's films were rediscovered but he certainly has a following now. I don't think the more lighter tone of the planed 'third Dalton film' would have suited him and maybe it's best left as a 'what might have been', especially given how successful Brosnan's Goldeneye was.

David - though I’m closer to your age and general Bond film opinions, LTK is the better film and at least top half of the franchise if not top 10. Great video as always!
