Sir Roger Moore wrote a book about his experience in making the move and it makes a great read.

What was strange at the time seeing this brand new 007 was that Roger looked younger than Connery even though he was actually older! No question that each film after this was very much influenced by the other popular films of their eras-this one blaxploitation as well as featuring the dumb southern sheriff that was also popular at the time. (Very different from the 60s when it was Bond that was copied and influenced) Still there are lots of great things here-the music,the villains-the very style and energy of all the voodoo stuff. And of course,Moore was a terrific 007. I remember the audience in the theatre erupting in applause when Moore leaped across the crocodiles backs-one of the coolest moments in the series!

I love LALD. From the soundtrack, locations and the exploitation. The French Quarter is one of my favorite places to visit. You just can't ignore the "feel" in the air when you're there. IMO this is one of Sir Roger Moore's best Bond films. All of the henchmen where interesting. But I would have preferred that Pepper had been used a little less and Samedi would have been used more with more focus on the voodoo theme. What an underused character. However, I do love this film. The thing I enjoy the most about LALD is that Bond is on the defensive for pretty much the entire movie (and the novel). Often times he is very comfortable and seems to be undermining the villains a bit too easily in the movies but here, from the very moment he gets off the airplane, he is in a different world and people are after him constantly. One thing I really like that I never see mentioned is the trap doors in the Fillet of Soul bar like he can't take it easy for a second in this movie! It has it's flaws but having watched all the movies for the first time in sequence without reading any reviews ahead of time, this one was definitely my favorite. Roger Moore entering an underworld of crime and voodoo is as fun of an adventure as any Bond story ever for my money

“The persuaders (amicalement votre)” was very popular when growing up in Quebec. I rewatched the série years ago and is still very good!

I grew up during the Brosnan era but for some reason as a kid I constantly watched Live and Let Die. It’s one of my favorites of the series. Great review guys!!!

That made for a good watch. But 6/10 is a bit harsh. LALD is definitely my favourite Moore Bond. It's fast paced with some terrific set pieces. Jane seymour is gorgeous, and I think Kananga's death is really cool. For villain deaths it's second only to Goldfinger's for me.

Am a Connery/Craig fan myself but always liked Roger Moore ... how could someone NOT like him? I am not a fan of most of his Bond films, but LALD and FYEO are my favourites of the Moore era. There were some memorable moments including the crocodile sequence. Remains the best stunt I have seen.

In the uk this film still is the most watched film on terrestrial tv when it made its tv debut. I think it was 28 million, late 70s, early 80s I think.

I remember those days very well. I was 20 when this film was released and the feeling among those of us who grew up in the Connery era was that the series - starting with Diamonds Are Forever - had degenerated into the style of camp best exemplified by the TV series Batman. While we all liked Roger as The Saint by the time of The Man With The Golden Gun the general public was just about to give up on Bond. It was The Spy Who Loved Me that saved the franchise and while it was still cartoonish it at least had charm and terrific production values. In short a good night out at the movies/

Roger Moore was definitely a Bond for the 70's..he was a good actor that was smart enough to know his strengths and never tried to copy Connery, he made Bond his own..and had some classic Bond moments..For 12 years he did something that until that moment no one thought possible, Replace Connery....

Q was left out intentionally. Strangely, Cubby and Saltzman felt too much was being made of the gadgets and excluded him from the film. A decision they reversed with the next film TMWTGG.

First Bond movie I saw a very young lad (and not ready) for this kind of movie...Had to be taken to lobby twice...Didn't see another Bond movie until a teenager (Moonraker) later in 70's as a result...Big JB fan now, but it was an unsettling start...Commentators are right--Jane Seymour was/still is rather stunning...

Seymour takes it to a 7 for me. Probably my favorite Moore Bond. It felt like it went on for a bit too long and had multiple low energy endings but still good stuff.

You guys always do a great job with these reviews. I like Live and Let Die the most of the Roger Moore movies....the least campy. This movie did a good job of getting Bond "back on track" after the horrible Diamonds are forever.

I felt the same as a kid about Moore. Loved his adventures so OTT and couldnt believe it was the same character Connery was meant to have played.lol. But If not for this era of fantastical OUTRAGEOUS Bond adventures 007 wouldn't have survived.Sir Roger fit the bill and audiences loved him.

Thought I'd commented on this already...obviously not. Basically...like OHMSS they tried to take Bond in a new direction with a different actor...but unlike OHMSS this actually works for me...it's completely insane...but it kept a smile on my face throughout the whole film. The Moore era is very inconsistent but it couldn't have had a better start. 10/10.

I actually prefer if the pre-title sequence has something to do with the main story. And if you look at the preceding films, only Goldfinger and Thunderball had sequences without a link to the main story (and in Thunderball the antagonist was still a Spectre agent). The two next films' sequences also had links to the main story. The next without a link is Moonraker (and even there you have Jaws).

Q is absent because they wanted too keep away from the Connery era for Moore,s first film. Also no M,s office scene.

Wow, Joe’s my age and he says the first Bond film he saw was in 1981? I first saw Bond on ABC’s Sunday Night at the Movies in ‘73. I was 3. I think DAF may have been the first one I saw. YOLT was most likely the second one. First 007 film I saw in a theater was Moonraker in ‘79. But I got to give it to Joe, he has superseded my 007 fandom by millions of miles.

I think you make a good point about Roger Moores time as Bond. He is one of the reasons we have the movie's today. Bond could have ended up being a series of movies from the 60s starring Sean connery and one by Lazenby and that's it. Even though they are more of a comedy than spy Thriller. Moores films kept the franchise going well into the next decade. If they had kept changing actors the movie's may have tanked and they may have stopped making them altogether. RIP Yaphet kotto.

James bond has had many actors portray the iconic super spy. Although I think I like how Sean Connery portrays the character the best, I think the better movies are the ones with Moore. Specifically speaking I think that "The Spy Who Loved Me," "Moonraker", "For Your Eyes Only," and "Octopussy" are some of the best the series has to offer.

Live and let die is one of the classic Bonds. The best score of all of them. Hands down. And Moore made the role his own.

Ever heard of a movie called Black Belt Jones with Jim Kelly? That’s another blaxploitation film mixed with kung fu 😂 it’s corny as hell but such a fun movie to watch! But yes Live and Let Die is my second favourite Bond movie in the whole franchise, and Goldeneye is first! In 1999 when I was only 9 years old, those two Bond movies were the first two I ever saw.. and that introduced me to the world of 007. They will always be my two favourite Bond films and was a massive part of my late childhood.. not to mention they are both excellent movies, regardless.

Thanks for a great discussion! Live and Let Die was the first Bond film I saw. Even though it was on television I was hooked and, so, I will always have a soft spot for this entry. That said, I think that perhaps the only thing that has aged well is the title song. Let and Let Die, I think, suffers from an issue that many films from the 70s suffer from and that is that 70s clothes -wardrobe- simply has not aged well. You could look at the suits and clothing that Sean Connery and supporting cast (Jack Lord and Rick Van Nutter come to mind) wore up through You Only Live Twice and they are perfectly fine, even today. Heck, you could go to Cary Grant in North By Northwest (1959) and wear his suits today and you'd be fine. In Live and Let Die the wide lapels, wide ties, wide collars, etc.., to me, all are a visual distraction whereas I'm not sure the same can be said about, for instance, the wardrobe in Thunderball or From Russia With Love for instance.

I always thought Fleming was influenced by Errol Flynn for James Bond. They both lived in Jamaica. Don't know if the same time but that might not matter.

This is an odd film and very much a product of its time. I used to rate it lower on my list, but after more recent viewings, I've raised it in the ranks. It's a solid debut for Sir Roger and despite the change in approach there's still some edgy moments (Kananga's death aside). The cast is excellent. Yaphet Kotto has a strong presence. His henchmen are fantastic. The stunts are decent and the boat Chase is great. It's a good story and has a pretty good Felix Leiter. JW Pepper doesn't bother me as much here. His character makes sense in this film. What surprised me most on a recent viewing is that (again Kananga's death aside) the campiness is kept in check. It was an improvement over Diamonds.

This was the last Moore Bond film I saw. Pre AVTAK. A strange one. Totally different to Spy & Moonraker. Not as spectacular as FYEO & Octopussy. Was in the middle of the early 70's trilogy. I've grown to love it & it is entertaining.

l love the Shaft films and have all of them. Plus the TV mini series and the 2000 S.L. Jackson one.. The third film (In Africa) is ironically like a Bond film. Just got to see the new film that is being released about now, but this looks more like a goofy comedy, again another parallel, the Shaft films like Bond started serious, but like Bond in the early 70's they're stating to take a comedic light hearted approach.

Shorter review this time ! The movie is not among my favorites, not my Roger moore go to . I'm not too interested by the vaudou stuff to be honnest , there are some good sequences of course like the boat chase, the scene where Bond introduces himself to solitaire et the gang, the score is great. I would say they could have explained more the health consequences to have a lot of drugs addicts in american streets, it would make the stakes a bit bigger maybe. And I know we tlked about the manly connery but I think tricking Solitaire like he did to sleep with her is to me maybe the worst part of the movie and worse than any Connery bond moment with women. Especialy because it was her first time so you just take advantage of the someone's innocence.

Live And Let Die is a very overrated film. I took it personal when James Bond was in New York City for only 15 minutes and some secs. That pissed me off big time. Then that bus scene was OK but that boat scene was too long and I didn't care for J.W. Pepper. After that boat scene was over, then I started enjoying LALD. Love the 3rd act of this film but that is about it. A bottom 3 Bond film for me.

The best of Moore's outings as Bond. LALD doesn't suffer as much as Moore's later outings do from the fashion of the time and the humour is less ridiculous. I do like Moore's innuendo and humour when delivered in the right doses (particularly when delivered from Moore himself) but am not a fan of the emergence of characters such as Sheriff JW Pepper which reduce the franchise to slapstick first meted out in DAF which will get progressively worse through the rest of the decade until FYEO. You guys comment on the absence of a grand finale in the YOLT mould but I like the fact there is no overlong shootout at the end which is only ever going to go one way. LALD happens to be my favourite of all the Fleming novels and if I had to choose one of the Fleming stories to be revisited for a more serious treatment in the Casino Royale mould it might be this one. All said though, a great supporting cast. A great villain. And a great Bond girl in Solitaire. Baron Samedi and the voodoo scenes always made me uneasy when watching this as a child especially Samedi's reappearance at the very end. The movie gets an 8 from me though I wouldn't place this above any of the previous efforts from Connery or Lazenby except DAF.

Connery was bald by the early 70's. It was no secret as he was appearing in other films without a toupee. Surely Cubby & Harry would not have wanted the public knowing their Bond was wearing a rug. Even if he kept in good physical shape.

In hearing about when Joe became a Bond fan I now understand why he says the things he says. His commentary is now a lot more tolerable, lol... I mean when your first Bond is Roger Moore (despite him being in the most movies he wasn't great as Bond) AND your first movies are his WORST ones... of course you say crazy and contradictory things, hahaha... I was gonna stop listening to these but now that I know this info his opinion is way less frustrating... Scott seems to understand Bond and the Bond Universe A LOT better

Joe and Scott: I love your series "Countdown to Bond 25." But you are both WAY too kind to LALD. I'm old enough to have seen this movie in the theater when it came out in 1973. Having grown up on the Sean Connery/Bond and Lazenby/Bond films, I was disgusted by this movie. I remember walking out of the theater comparing LALD to the Dean Martin/Matt Helm films. There are so many elements in LALD that do not belong in a James Bond movie: For example, (1) M would never go to one of his 00 agent's homes. M would summon his agents to go to his office. (2) As good as the actor, Clifton James is, a character such as J.W. Pepper does not belong in a Bond film. (3) I disagree with you on the music score. It's loud when it should be building tension within the film. I will say that, on its own, the music is interesting to listen to. But it's clunky in its interpretation of Bond music. (4) A 00 agent would never explain to M what Q's gadgets are for. M would already know what the gadgets do - He's the head of the 00 section for goodness sake! Every gadget would have to have his approval before Q gave it to an agent in the field. (5) Roger Moors is stiff in LALD and MWTGG. He doesn't begin to relax into the role until TSWLM. (6) Even as a teenager, I realized that Tom Mankiewicz was a third rate writer. Director Guy Hamilton had a propensity to go for the humor anyway (pace: Goldfinger, DAF). But with Mr. Mankiewicz either writing or co-writing the scripts, the humor became out of place. With Connery and Lazenby, the humor was subtle and fit the mood of the scene - usually to relieve the movie-goer of the violence. In my opinion, Mr. Mankiewicz ruined the series for a long time, as the film makers adopted to his style of writing. (7) Tarot cards and voodoo do not belong in a James Bond movie either. Though I do agree with you that the scene of Solitaire predicting Bond's arrival - cut to the beat of the music - and juxtaposed with the airplane flying to the U.S.A. is well done. Jane Seymour's voice really sells the scene too. Needless to say, I hated this movie for a long time. I have since softened my attitude toward it over the past 46 years - it does have a certain goofy charm to it. But, my goodness, compared to it's predecessors, this movie started a very bad trend in the Bond movies that, sadly, continued on for many years. Using your scale of 1 - 10, I would give this movie a 1.

CGI is horrible when used too much, no reality in today's films

It is not a bad movie if you see it independently. But when i watch FRWL or Thunderball or Goldfinger or OHMSS or even the low budget Dr No. and then I try to watch this, I just feel a great disappointment... That's my opinion and taste of course. I don't know why but as , Roger Moore seemed to me more believable as Bond than when he actually played Bond. I really don't know why... Lazenby was better by far than Moore as James Bond. It's a pity he made only one (exceptional) movie. He was grittier, more athletic, more believable at action scenes and with the experience he gained from his first movie he would become better and better evetytime. Roger Moore just looks to oriole and sweetener in the role when he is compared to Connery or Lazenby. Pitty.
