Mike Grier's first draft class looks to have solid pieces for the San Jose Sharks. Start with Filip Bystedt and how his short time with the San Jose Barracuda displayed what type of player he could be going forward. Also, revisit the trade with the (then) Arizona Coyotes and how Conor Geekie compares to Bystedt. Then, how did Cam Lund, Mattias Havelid, and Michael Fisher perform this season, and what are the expectations for each player going forward? Finally, check in on some of the late-round picks, including Jake Furlong, why he could earn a big role with the Barracuda, and if any of the college players in Joey Muldowney, Eli Barnett, or Reese Laubach can pop.

I appreciate these reviews of previous drafts and agree with your takes on the prospects. You should have included more about the SHL when discussing Havelid. The SHL focuses less on development; it focuses on winning. A team in the league can be relegated to the lower league if they are one of the two worst teams in the league at the end of the season. This is why their emphasis is more on winning than developing. If they want to develop a player, they send that player to their team's lower-league affiliate. Havelid was not getting playing time. As you pointed out, it was because he was not as effective during the season, but let's remember he is playing against men in one of the three top leagues in the world. What is the best for Havelid to develop? I am not worried about him being moved down as the season went on or his lower point totals by the end of the season for two reasons: 1) Eklund had the same issue in his second season, and 2) he is playing against men and not prospects. I hope they will play him one more season in the SHL. Much like Bystedt and Eklund, both those prospects needed the extra season in the SHL to mature physically and in their game. Still, after that, the SHL did not provide them the development they needed to become NHL players: smaller ice rink, more skilled competition, and a league centered more on development than winning.

Hopefully a few of these guys turn into decent NHLers because while it’s exciting to have Smith turn pro and draft Celebrini this year, SJ still needs a few more years where they get consistent injection on skill and youth, especially when they are on ELCs. I don’t even want to think about the goaltending….

Agreed. They need two more years of high draft picks.

This is my last note. To everyone who thinks the Barracuda has to win for the prospects to develop, I suggest you go to Sheng's podcast, where he discussed this with an excellent source. The reason is that the Sharks organization is not focused as much on winning in the AHL as they are on player development. A case in point is last year. Besides the derailment that the injuries caused to their top-line players moving up to the Sharks for almost the entire season, important young players who were relatively healthy ALL made strides in their development. Like Shakir and Cardwell, for example. Instead, they should focus on developmental growth rather than winning because of the stage of rebuilding that the Sharks are in. If you go to the games, you will almost always see GMMG in his seat, intensely watching the kids, so I trust when he sends them up and down. Winning is important, but what is more important is that the prospects the Sharks believe are critical are correctly developed for their future, which should be their focus, and winning will eventually come with it.

I hope that we get three to four NHLers out of this draft. But I do view the prospects with rose colored glasses.

I’d rather have geekie easily over the 3 we have at this point. Pretty hard to have a preference either way at this point with none on both sides in the nhl
