j 50, I just love the service hole in the tanks. good design far easier to lubricate the valve gear compared to going underneath with a pit. not only safer and quicker, but able to be done any time, anywhere, it also appeals in the sameway the bullied designs do . gee I wonder why i am attracted to the oddball. always fun to see your layout and more great reviews thanks Sam.

Enjoyed the running session, nice LNER colour schemes. The Lima locos are interesting, perhaps because they are slightly different. The motors have their own sound too. : ) John chambs123 is right, the coupling rods on the J83 have been swapped, so appear upside down. Not a problem for you of course. : ) Cliff.
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
+janiceandcliff Thanks Cliff - I'm a big fan of LNER green! I know what you mean about the Lima motors - their intercity 125 has a particularly excellent sound to it! And not at all - I've swapped those over now so that they're correct! Thanks again for the comment, Cheers, Sam
@Dallas-Nyberg4 жыл бұрын
I have 2 of the Lima J50's.... the LNER green and a BR black. Thankfully, both of mine have cleanly applied striping. You can easily improve that connecting rod's appearance by simply super gluing the head of a hex bolt to the rod. If you wanted to take it one step further, you can actually connect that rod to the center wheels, using a hex head bolt. Cheers

Hello Sam, it's got to be the J83 for me as I have two of them. Now I have ask Barrie davis this question and as yet I have not had an answer. (Maybe he has not seen it.) My J83's are Hornby's 8473 was made at Margate and 8474 was made in China. They both have a traction tyre on the middle axle and the rear axle is sprung. Barrie said, in one of his video''s that had sold all of his J83, but did not go on to explain why. Is it because they have a problem over points? I have searched the internet, with no results. Do you have a later J83? if so does it cause you any problems? Thanks Sam. Martin (Thailand)

+Sam'sTrains Hi Bulstrode and Sam, yes the green or black transcons can be nice runners, they have the heavier Johnson open can motor. I find them more controllable than the newer Hornby jobs with the silver Mabuchi motors. PS I did add a little extra weight in the rear of the cabs to redress the centre of gravity. Regards, Cliff.

What really catches my eyes on the J50 is the poor spacing of the loco number on the tank sides as they should be central directly underneath the N and E, and yes this is a 30 year old Lima model, but there is no excuse for that in my opinion !! ....

The J-50. Another engine that I'd describe as 'pleasingly ugly'. When does this model date from? I'd guess late 1980's - early 1990's. I do like it, but much prefer the BR black livery. My young brother had a J-83 in 1982 sort of time, and it was a lovely little engine.

J50, ugly as the annoying P2. J83, cute as the Terrier Whitechapel. The J50 has unnecessarily long heavy side tanks, which completely ruin her appearance 100%. The J83 is 100% cuter, because she's just the right size for a small 0-6-0 tank engine. The tanks are exactly the right size, as is everything else about her. If I had a favourite LNER Tank Engine, the J83 wins rods down. The LNER Teak carriages suit her in elegance and charm. She definitely has what we call the cute factor.
