As Wings' third album celebrates its 50th anniversary, I look back on this well-loved classic and the torrid story of its making - as well as discussing the music of course...

I loved your analogy of Picassos' Last Words as like a ' Chinese Puzzle Box' ..I've never thought of it that way, but thats' a great way of looking at it. As you say, imagine being there watching a magician weave his magic like that in such a spontaneous way. I love the album for its' eccentricity and eclecticism, and you're absolutely right when you say it was McCartney freeing himself and having fun at last after all the trials of The Beatles split and then his own group. I agree about No Words, thats' probably my second favourite track, .it has a lovely atmosphere and some wonderful chord changes. I read somewhere the title ' Jet' referred to the name of one of the McCartneys' pet dogs? ..I remember loving that song when I was a kid, because it just rocks and is so upbeat . Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five is quite simply one of the best songs he ever wrote and my favourite track on the album..the sheer relentless energy with that driving piano and the massive soundstage is breathtaking. A fitting and inciteful tribute to a classic album James, well done.

Hi Rob, thanks for the reminder about Jet - I should have mentioned that it was named after the McCartney's puppy. Later on they had a pony which they also named Jet, so it's clearly a name that meant a lot! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the album.

Hi James - Another classic from my childhood memories that's a mainstay of my collection. I don't remember my parents ever having a copy so never got to explore the poster at the time (like I did with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road's sleeve). I do remember one of the guys who ran the youth cricket team I played in would give us a lift to matches in his Mark One Ford Capri and play the cassette, which I thought was super cool at the time. Cheers Dale

Great record. I have an old copy of this from back in the day with the poster and all. Paul’s best outside The Beatles. Nice video.

Nice to hear some love for “Mamunia”. The lyrical theme reminds me of the old pop standard “Pennies From Heaven”, first recorded by Bing Crosby in the 1930’s. It’s the kind of song that one assumes Paul is very familiar with.. Very enjoyable video James, as always..

Lovely revisiting and tribute to the album here, James. Also rip to Denny. I barely knew who he was until you did those great Wings videos some time back. Wow, what they went through to make the album! It would have been something if Ginger had just played on a cut or two, of course. Imagining being in the room with Paul and Dustin...what a memory that would be! -Carm

Hi Carm! Great to hear from you, thanks for dropping by for this one. Ah yes very sad indeed about Denny. It is amazing how many stories accrue around the making of this particular album. Hoping all is well with you, I can see now that you uploaded a Halloween video a few weeks ago - sorry I missed that, I will catch up with you soon.

Yeah, I feel like it’s no coincidence that many people have considered the “Let Me Roll It” almost as a tribute to John. Not only the way he sings with the echoey production but the guitar riff is pretty much ripped from “Cold Turkey”… funnily enough, a song that Paul vetoed as a potential Beatles track
@jamesgriffithsmusic

Thanks Marcus...I guess it was the lyrical angle that Paul didn't like about Cold Turkey.

I wonder if the loss of those demo tapes in Nigeria actually contributed to the quality of the finished album. Sometimes, out of adversity comes a fortunate end result. Cheers.

Happy new year Martin. The Wings catalogue is peppered with good tracks though only Band on the Run and London Town seem to achieve real consistency.

Hey James, watching this after your lovely tribute to Denny Laine. I totally agree that this is Paul's finest work outside The Beatles. No fat or filler on this whatsoever. I'm glad they did not recruit Baker as drummer as he would be a terrible fit for what Wings were doing at the time. I seen Baker in a close up night club gig and regardless of his impressive style as a drummer, he regularly lost time and had to use odd arm gestures to get himself back on time ( a bit akin to losing step when marching and having to skip to get back in step - I was in the military in the 80s in case you are wondering how I'd know this 😂 ). Orrabest James ❤

Thanks Scott...interesting story about Ginger's drumming. I'm not the biggest fan of Cream to be honest and I don't know too much about Baker, though I know he was supposed to be very accomplished.

My earliest memory of this album was listening to my dad playing it, then didn't think of it again until Squeeze played Let Me Roll It at Liverpool, and it was incredible! So then picked up a copy on CD so I could try and relive the Squeeze moment! Not a bad album of course! 😂

Hi James. I didn't know there was so much troubles making the record nor that 3 of the songs were recorded in London. I've never really cared for the album, not among my fave McCartney albums. To me there's only the two famous tracks; title track and Jet which are really good. I try and give it a listen today to see if i can manage a higher appreciation for it now. Pasi

@@jamesgriffithsmusic Let's start by saying i did find this a bit better than i remembered however it didn't really climb the ladder with me. Bluebird was okay some instrumental bits i liked, the thing i disliked the most was the harmonies. They didn't sing them badly, i just didn't like how their voices sounded together. Mrs.Vanderbilt good bass line, song was okay, Let Me Roll It, i guess it was okay, didn't really care for it. Mamunia, this was the best one, i would call it's rhythm "lilting" (hopefully got it right) Very endearing, liked it a lot. No Words, as you said it was too short, but it really did have incredients for a good song. Picasso's, didn't care for it. The guitar riff on it reminded me a lot of I'm So Tired. 1985 yes it was a good one, liked it, the second best. Just seconds before i came to write this reply, i saw a headline saying Denny Laine's dead. I didn't read it. It seemed to come from a reliable source, however the picture on it was about Jimmy McCullough. However, if it turns out to be true, RIP Denny Laine.

my dad had this record in his collection and I used to listen to it and look through it a lot too. I think it's McCartney's most solid album. The only weak song, for me, is Jet. Never a fan of that but love everything else. This was around the time he did Live and Let Die too... I think

It's probably Tony Visconti's sweetening touches with the strings that put you off it it a bit. A stripped down version would be interesting to hear.
