Hi I live in Scotland a very wet area. I'm recently retired AFCL remedial farrier. Towards the end of my career I specialised in treating flat footed horses. I was once told by the renowned. Farrier Mark Coldwell at seminar to take the foot forward on the stand and rasp the dorsal wall till you have the shape you want.note before you take anything off the base of the hoof. He told me this is where most farriers go wrong. Dealing with flat footed horses and end up pinching the sole when they're trying to bring the shoe under the toe and think more on bringing the toe as close to the point of the frog as possible. To stop the leverage on the heels. There is point in long heeled shoes or bars if the toe is far out in front of the frog creating that huge leverage over pressurising the heels.In some cases I would almost completely square the toe and roller ground toe edge , for the first few showings, very ugly. I rarely use pads as most British farriers, as I find it is easier to get abrasive dirt or sand between heels and wear them more. also tried to keep the shoe weight down, to stop hyperextension which the horse land more on its heels I also found the use of Vulcan drop forged shoes really lended themselves for use on flat feet as their quarter clips are not to big, but strong seated soles and easy to square the toes up without mutilation. They have lots of nail holes behind the quarter clips as I would not be able to use any of the holes in toe area as they are crossing the sole . It worked for me. I only wish I had known 30yrs before

I live in the high desert in Wyoming, I struggle even trimming the frog with a knife because the sole is so hard. I like when you tell why you are doing what you are doing. Your information just keeps getting better. I hope to get to your level in a few years.

Here in Wisconsin we’ve had a pretty wet spring. Probably nothing compared to your area but definitely dealing with some soft soppy feet. Even after shoeing horses all day I love your videos man! You really put out some awesome work!

I really like your channel. I’m having to do all the trimming and shoeing of my horse. There are no farriers in the area I live at.

I’m from northeastern New Mexico. So it is very dry. I really like the videos. The closest other farrier to me is about three hours away so it’s hard to get together and practice very often. These videos are super helpful. The one thing I’d like to see more of is some forging. There are a lot of forging videos but not very many videos of fitting a handmade to an actual foot rather than just a specimen shoe.

Hello from Western Australia. The closest i have been to you is Seattle. Its a beautiful part of the world there. Its very dry east of Perth where I’m from. Under 14 inches of rain each year and only about 3 weeks of winter. No snow. Rarely goes below zero. Mostly Tee shirt weather. Our horses were all barefoot and Dad would just get his rasp out now and again. I’m fascinated to see the modern stuff you guys do now. Very clever.

Not a farrier/trimmer, but I live in the Toutle area of Washington State. So, wet, but our soil drains fast thanks to the volcanic ash and sand in the soil. Summers we get a couple months long drought where the horses raise dust and their feet are rock hard. Winter, Spring, and Fall we get all the rain you'd expect and ridiculous amounts of mud on the top layer of soil, especially where teh horses have enriched it enough that it's not sand. When it rains hard and long we get standing water, but within hours of a dry spell it soaks in. And in the last half decade or so we've actually gotten some pretty decent snow and freezing weather that made the horses' blankets more like war horse barding and armor that rattled when they walk >.>

I don’t have tattoos but I am interested in knowing your story behind yours. The only way I am able to trim and shoe my horse is by the grace of God. He is good!

What a huge difference in the end!! Can you tell if the horses are able to feel the difference when your done? I saw one horse that hadn't had a trim in a long time so he had lots of problems and pain... When the farrier was finished and the horse was led around a bit, he began licking his lips and chewing (a limbic system thing)... I guess that meant he was feeling no pain and was a happy horse!!

Have you though about adding heels like they do for hackneys? Raising up the back of the foot may improve the circulation and hoof growth. It will definitely improve the pastern angle.

My horses were able to go barefoot, with regular trims... Since, I ride (or "road," in my earlier years) only western or bareback, I'm not familiar with all the things and gadgets people put on their horse's pasterns and hooves... It would be great to hear you explain what they're for. I'm assuming in this case, those black rubber things are just to protect the outer hoof walls... Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I live in the mountains of Peru. Weather has changed drastically. Normally we experience dry season from May - September. Rains normally start from October thru April. This year we didn’t get any rain until mid December. Not a good year to plant crops. My horse has extremely dry hooves . His frogs are undeveloped. Not sure what to change. He is on a really good diet of Alfalfa and concentrated feed. Any advice would be helpful. Let me add he is in his stall only at night. Daytime he is in corral which is gravel/ sand/ soil. No grass.

I would love to see if you shod horses or trim horses with different hoof conditions and what types of shoes, you use and why ? Also, more details about trying to attain hoof pastern axis, and how you gauge the walk of the horse to see what the issue is, or how to trim the horse. I still can't figure out what to look at when a horse is being walked or how people see details. Also, explain why you used the pad (I don't think you did). The thing I am confused about is the pad you used looks to be thicker in the front than the back. If the point is to build up the under run heels, then this pad will still leave the heels lower at the back.

When those braids come out, your hair is going to be so curly. I am from Toronto, Canada. Most of spring is winter, most of summer is very humid and disgusting, fall is fall, and winter is mostly colder fall weather and winter. So even during, spring, summer, fall and winter, not so much precipitation except when it does, from time to time... I don't own horses so can't say if how dry the horse hooves are.
