The 1992 Formula 1 world champion Nigel Mansell shocked the world by leaving F1 and joining IndyCar for the 1993 season. Nigel Mansell got off to a flying start as he set a new track record in qualifying, and became the first driver in IndyCar's 37 year history to score the pole in his first start. These are the events of his first IndyCar race.

I was a contractor for Newman Haas in 1993 and worked on the fuel data analysis / reporting software. I can tell you that I was extremely relieved when Nigel made it across the finish line with enough fuel to win (and keep my job)!

Abso-freakin-lutely. This was THE era when IndyCar truly had F1 shaking in it's booties. Looking back now you'd be hard-pressed having to pick which series was the one to watch. Cart even enticed Senna to come test their machinery hoping he'd make the switch, though I don't think he ever truly considered leaving F1 at the time.

It was so amazing the 1993 champion of Cart (Michael Andretti) switched to Formula one. 13 races; NO wins; 1 podium; 7 TOTAL points... Cart/Indy has ALWAYS BEEN "the B team" to F1 and always will be.

as good as it would be unfortunately the full length track is no longer able to be used. From the second chicane on the track down that straight that kinks gradually towards the right is now only 1 lane wide and has a light rail system built on it.

One of my favorite racing fun facts is that Nigel was reigning champion in both F1 and Indycar simultaneously for a short time. More broadly, finally getting his F1 title and having an exceptionally dominant season in the process, then fucking off to do Indycar and being rapid right away like he had a hunger to be goated in both is an amazing story.

I miss Paul Page. He brought an intensity and seriousness to the way Indycar was presented to the world and raised the overall television product imo. The role announcers play in the success of any racing product is very under appreciated imo.

i totaly aggree. Watching the official F1 Broadcast with crofty feels totaly different then watching the german one from sky, with crofty being more "loud" and emotional (lol who could have guessed that the german one is more serious ^^). Other example would be the dtm, where, at least in my opinion, the german commentator is just annoying while the international ones really make the product better

One interesting thing about Paul is that he'd raced Formula Ford and had a great sense of how to steer the narrative of the race broadcast. He knew how to lead Uncle Bobby and get the best out of him. In a 1989 race Paul talks about how Porsche had let him lap the Nurburgring in Teo Fabi's IndyCar, which I had to rewind a few times because he was talking so casually about it. Paul was an outstanding lead broadcaster and yes, he absolutely added to the big-time feel of it.

I remember following both Nigel, and Michael's progress in 93. I am a Ferrari fan, but kept supporting Nigel after he left to go back to Williams. It's too bad that Michael couldn't wrap his head around F1, and perform like he could have. For Nigel to hold both the F1 title, and the CART championship, was a pretty special thing.
@SchumiFan92
@SchumiFan92 Жыл бұрын
F1 were too snobby and wouldn’t give Michael the time he needed to adapt. Mario eluded to that fact that McLaren weren’t doing him any favors either in Beyond the Grid. That aside, Mansell Mania was truly something. Doubt we’ll see it again since no top level F1 drivers are leaving for Indycar any time soon it seems.
@Spike-sk7ql
@Spike-sk7ql Жыл бұрын
Michael was partly at fault there too though. He thought he could do like his dad did, and fly home to the states after the races, and just do engineer meetings over the phone. That, at a time when F1 was in the middle of the most technological boom they ever had up until 2014. I seriously think that if Michael had stayed in England, and worked more with the team, at the factory, they would have gelled better, and he would have been better adapted to the car. He could have ran lap after lap in those years, as there was no limit on testing. Schumacher used to do so many testing miles, that he did more than the dedicated test drivers at Ferrari. Probably the same at Benneton. Michael should have done well in F1, but he shot himself in the foot by basically just showing up for the races. It wasn't the 70s anymore. Senna started the very physically, and mentally fit driver era, and Schumacher perfected it. Michael would have done well to follow Senna's lead. Senna didn't see Brazil until the season was over (except for the race weekend, of course).
@jeffa4133

@@Spike-sk7ql There are different sides to this story as is well documented. The current 'trend' with fans that often gets repeated is the "he failed because he flew back and forth" angle. It really just depends on who you want to believe. All I know for sure is MA was one hell of a driver in CART, I think that speaks volumes and carries more credibility when considering which theory one chooses to believe.
@Spike-sk7ql
@Spike-sk7ql Жыл бұрын
@@jeffa4133 I never said that was "the reason" he failed in F1. Honestly, he started to come to terms with F1 by the time he left, and was getting better results. Had he stayed another year, a lot of the tech was stripped from the cars, and I think he would have done better. Yes, he was a very good driver in CART. No one can take that away from him. The F1 cars of the time required a different driving style with the active suspension. Mansell explained it when asked why he was so much faster than Patrase in 92. With that stuff gone, I think the cars would have suited Michael better. Let's not forget that he came back to CART in 94, and dominated the first race at SP.
@jeffa4133
@jeffa4133 Жыл бұрын
@@Spike-sk7ql I think there's mich more to it than that, but I won't go down that rabbit hole as there's been plenty of discussion over the years of the political forces at play at the time, and it's out there for anyone who cares to explore it.

This is great, thanks for making this video. Its fun to look back on those times. A couple of interesting things here: Mansell actually was both the reigning F1 World Champion and the IndyCar World Champion at the same time, since the Indy season ended before the F1 season did. Also, regarding the speed of the cars in the pits, F1 only introduced a pit speed limit in 1994, before that the cars would come down the pit lane at full speed, with mechanics standing inches away. Pretty crazy.

I was at the track that day. Amazing atmosphere! One thing the organisers did there that I've never seen elsewhere was that they painted the outside of the safety fence black on key corners. This meant that spectators could take photos through the fence and the fence would essentially disappear if you had a long lens.

Gowing up N.Ireland as a catholic we loved to see British sports people fail (silly, I know now). But I started watching F1 the EXACT race Senna died in Imola. I didn't really know about Schumacher then. But straight after the imola race, in discussion I realized my Da was a part-time watcher of F1 and it was fun to have that interest! Anyway, the topic got onto Mansell. And my Da said "That man is a Lion!!!". "But he's English!!!," I said. He responded telling to not listen to the nonsense in our republican neighbourhood! "He may just race cars, but THAT man has a heart of a lion, and I'm sure he doesn't care about your nationality, as you shouldn't, him! If you do, then you'll never be a Lion'! My love for motorsport started that day! As did my questions of blind patriotism!

The start would also be controversial at Detroit, too where Paul broke the rulebook out on air, Mansell and Newman/Haas thought the rule was interpreted one way, Penske thought it was a different way. Neither finished as it turned out due to Mansell being put in the wall by a safety truck, and the Penskes running into issues in what would be Sullivan's last win EDIT: Wasn't the rule changed after Australia as well? I remember something in a documentary or a book about the rule being changed to prevent this in the future. Also Mansell lost Indy on a restart and took that personally, burning the the field of at a restart in Milwaukee, one race later (where Raoul Bousel got a stop go at Indy) EDIT: Also 93 New Hampshire would be worth covering, best mile ovel race in CART history

Mansell was rubbish. He only won in 1992 because the car was so much better than everyone else's. The funny thing is Americans deluding themselves into thinking that doing well in IndyCar is a difficult thing for even a terrible Formula 1 driver like Mansell. Indy is even at the same level as Formula 2! There's no comparison between Formula 1 and IndyCar. Like all American sport, it is a watered down, girly version of the sports played elsewhere in the world, because Americans are soft and can't handle the sports the rest of us play...

Mansell's reputation for going on charges was legendary in F1. He really should have won more than just the 1 title. I remember watching the 1986 Australian Grand Prix as a 16 year old and my heart sinking when his tyre blew up. He was on course to win the title until that moment. Turns out that had he deliberately hit the wall, the race would have been red flagged and he'd be world champion because 2/3 of the race had been completed. That wouldn't work today. Insane what drivers could get away with back then.

Brilliant video. That story about the front wing being flown out made me laugh. It happens more than people realise in F1. My cousin works for Redbull and works in the paints department. The wings and paint costs thousands so they try to keep spare parts to a minimum for the cost cap. Also the front wings normally change through out the season. It happens a 2-3 times a year where my cousin will have to go to the factory spray a front wing and then it gets sent out on a private jet so they get it for the race. It’s crazy.

You may think that a pit lane speed limit in the pits of 100mph is crazy but at the time there was no pit lane speed limit in F1. At the European Grand Prix a combination of that and the pit lane entry cut off the last corner allowed Senna to set a lap record (despite not actually being set on a full lap). I believe there was discussion about denying the record but it was allowed to stand.

1993 was the first year CART had a pit speed limit, and yeah it was 100mph. USAC, always more willing to copy from NASCAR, had introduced one at Indy for 1992, which I believe was also the first year USAC implemented closed pits when a yellow comes out. CART didn’t start closing the pits until 1997 or so, and it kind of took a lot of the fun out of pit strategy.

I had the 1993 IndyCar Season Review on VHS. Think my parents got it for 50p in a video store in 1995.

An incredible debut. F1 and IndyCar champion in a row. Unique. So sad that He almost won Indy 500.

I went to the Indy 500 in 1993 as part of a trip from the UK that also included the F1 race in Montreal. At one stage Senna was playing hard to get at McLaren and was rumoured to be doing CART in 1993. Nelson Piqued was racing at the Indy 500 that year.

@@simonkevnorrisThen you'll really like this video on Marshall Pruett's YT channel chronicling Senna's test session at Firebird Raceway. Sadly, no footage exists, but there's interviews from people that were there and copies of the lap times from Senna and Fittipaldi. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j9p_nJqhmp7bm30.htmlsi=ViLN5KXti8Kv1tWN

Man, this was so clearly a Major League sport compared to the vintage spec series we have today. I know that motorsport as a whole is suffering, but there's simply no comparison between the modern series and this era of CART.

I'm pretty sure most IndyCar fans (including myself) favorite era is the CART era. Some of the best looking and sounding race cars ever. Not to mention the HP, with no power steering and sequential stick shift.

His voice is truly special. He's in my all time top three spots for sure, if not number one. Murray Walker is right there, and I loved Bob Jenkins. Ned Jarret and Benny Parsons were really something as well.

Mansell was a whole different level of driver. ONly other driver that could probably have done this was Senna.,..

I'll start by saying I'm a Nigel Mansell fan, and he's still my favorite F1 driver of all time, but... while I guess it's technically true that he left F1, it wasn't really what he wanted, he was also kind of pushed. The Williams F1 team had already made it quite clear they wanted Prost, or Senna, or both over Mansell. I guess Mansell would have still had a drive at Williams, since Prost was unwilling to work with Senna and the next best on the grid, by some distance in my opinion, was Nigel Mansell, but he wasn't that happy about the prospect of working with Prost and not being outright No.1 driver, so he left. If Mansell was still outright No.1 at Williams he never would have left for Indycar.
